Union County High School Pay
it Forward organization held its
annual fundraiser dinner on May
6 at the Hal Y. Maines Community Center to a full- house
crowd.
Pay it Forward President Robin Dukes opened the evening by
welcoming the crowd and giving
a short history of the organization and its goals. She reminded
the audience that the main goal
of the organization was to help
students be able to go to college.
To qualify for a scholarship
a student must meet income requirements (limits), show academic excellence (2.75 GPA or
higher), have an active community service resume and must
complete an essay on what they
want to do and how they will, after getting their education, pay
it forward if they should get a
scholarship.
After Dukes finished welcoming the crowd, Treasurer Tom Riherd led everyone in the pledge
of allegiance, and grace was offered by UCHS Principal Mike
Ripplinger.
Dinner was a selection of
smoked pork lion, prepared by
Joe Wilson or smoked chicken, prepared by Michael Dukes.
Sides included potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, cake,
peach cobbler and a choice of
beverage.

meeting, got some good news
as well as concluding work on a
sometimes messy issue.
At the May 9 meeting, the Lake
Butler City Commission heard
a presentation from Jennifer
Muldon of Powell and Jones,
certified public accountants, on
the result of the annual audit of

LAKE BUTLER — It’s
beginning to look like the Union
County Public Library is going
to be the most fun place to be
on Thursdays this summer since
a number of entertaining and
exciting programs have been
announced to help the county’s
young people have a good time.
This summer’s theme at the
library is “On Your Mark, Get
Set…Read!” All of the upcoming
summer event will take place at
the library at 10 a.m. except for
two (on June 23 and July 14),
which will be held at Lake Butler
Elementary School.
POP WARNER
The fun starts June 16 with
a “Go!” Program – a summer
kick-off with crafts, activities
and “Zumba with Demetrise.”
The following week, on June
23, the fun will revolve around
“Juggle!@LBES” featuring the
Jongleur Jugglers. The program
will return to the library on
June 30 with “Walk the Plank!”
featuring pirate games and
treasures.
The July schedule promises
to keep the fun coming with
“Bubble-Mania!” on July 7,
when participants will go outside
the library for a bubble-filled
blast. The next week, July 14,
the program will move to LBES
for “Magic @ LBES” with
Mike the Magician. On July 21
the program will be “Dance!”

including: a new chain saw from
Hendricks Equipment, a grandmother’s rocker/recliner from
Badcock Furniture, a handmade
heart quilt, two loads of lime
rock donated by Marvin Tucker,
five pieces of original specialty metalwork by Rodney Alldredge and a number of homemade cakes and pies.
A silent auction was also held
featuring the artwork of local
artist, 8-year-old Eva Whitehead, and the photography of
Terri Cochran.
Other treasures sold at one or
the other of the auctions included a massage, a certificate for a
dental cleaning and X-ray package and many other interesting items donated by members
of the community to help raise
funds to help a student’s college
career.
Both the Trey Tucker Band
and Hwy 238 provided entertainment, and dancing concluded the evening’-s activities.
Over $5,000 was raised for
the scholarship fund, and money is still coming in.
“We are so appreciative of every person who came through
the door and bought dinners,
bought auction items or just
gave monetary gifts from their
heart,” said Terri Cochran Wilson, Pay it Forward secretary.
“We appreciate Sheriff and Mrs.
Brad Whitehead for attending
and supporting our cause with
their many purchases and for
allowing their daughter, Eva, to
have some of her art auctioned
for the benefit. We also recognize his mother, Bobbie Morgan
for being the high bidder on the
patriotic heart quilt.”
Wilson said that the success
of the event would not have been
possible without the outpouring
of love and support of members
of the community. She wants to
thank the Emerson family for
providing the decorative plants
and greenery for the event as
well as two ninth grade students,
Karlie Wilson and Abby Davis,
who helped out and earned community service hours toward
their own college hopes and
plans. Both helped serve and accommodate the guests.

who were not recognized as you
were not overlooked, but were
so greatly appreciated,” Wilson
said. “We have a great community that supports its young people and their educational needs,
and that is the best of all of it.”

GAINESVILLE — Mary
Shea has always been fascinated
by native wildflowers. So when
she noticed a lack of variety on
her 40 acres of slash pine stand
four miles southwest of Newberry, she decided to do something
about it. She went to her local
USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service field office in
Gainesville, where she applied
for financial assistance through
the Environmental Quality Incentive Program to plant habitat
for pollinators.
It took some patience. Starting
three years ago, she prepared the
ground by removing weeds and
grass down to bare soil. Then
she broadcast seeds with a hand
spreader in 8-foot strips running
along the perimeter fence line
of the forest, about 1.6 acres to-

tal. She couldn’t fertilize because that would
only feed the weeds
and she had to mow
frequently above the
seedlings to control
weeds.
“It was worth it. My
reward was a beautiful show of color the
next spring,” Shea said.
Now she maintains her
plots. Every day she
patrols the wildflower strips in a golf cart
accompanied by her
two-and-a-half-year-old
grandson and a wildflower
identification
book in hand.
Although from the same perennial seed mix was used
throughout, the flowers that have
germinated vary according to
location and changing soil types.
Shea most frequently observes
bright orange Indian blanket,
golden black-eyed Susan, small
clusters of light-yellow daisy-like tickseed and showy pale
violet dotted horsemint. And the
habitat has done the job, as Shea
has seen an increase in a wide
array of butterflies and bees.
Among all the flowers, she said
the Horsemint attracts the highest number and biggest variety
of insects throughout the season.

parasites and pollutants have
contributed to the decline of
many species. Natural Resources
Conservation Service helps producers with technical and financial assistance for practices such
as planting cover crops, planting
wildflowers and native grasses in
buffers and areas not in production, and improving management
of grazing lands. Contact your

Have you ever been looking
for a perfect gift item and didn’t
have a clue what you wanted to
buy. Or maybe you have been
seeking a bargain for yourself
on a small appliance or some
other small household item, or
a hard to find movie from when
you were dating that you would
love to find so you could see
how it ended. There’s a place in
Lake Butler where you can do
all of these things, finding what
you had in mind sitting next to
something you never imagined
but discover you must absolutely
have – the store is called Sassy
Sisters Treasures and it stocks
an amazing array of new and
gently used items in such variety
that they seem of be offering
something for almost everyone.

Lopez is originally from
Miami, where she was born
and raised. She went to work
for AT&T there in 1979, then
accepted a transfer to Gainesville
in 1988. She was soon offered
another transfer, this time to
Jacksonville. She said she had
a son in school on Gainesville
and did not want him to have
to transfer and was convinced
by two of her co-workers to
split the difference and move
to Lake Butler that was in the
middle. One of her friends was
from Worthington Springs and
the other from Brooker and
the three planned to carpool to
Jacksonville. Lopez said she

fell in love with the small town
ambiance and peaceful environs
of Union County and decided
to stay when she retired from
AT&T. She has been a resident
for the past 14 years.
Rather then look for another
job (she is a CNA as well as a
customer service expert) Lopez
decided it was time to try a
small business on her own. An
old friend from Miami, Toni
D’onofrio, had some money
to invest and was interesting
in antiques and used high-end
furniture so she helped with the
financing to get things started.
If the friend’s last name sounds
familiar it is because her brother
is actor Vincent D’onofrio,
known to fans as Edgar the alien
in Men in Black and recurring
roles in Law and Order Criminal
Intent, as well as the movies Full
Metal Jacket and The Cell. Lopez
has an autographed picture of
him on her desk.
Sassy Sister’s Treasures has a
wide selection of items ranging
from glassware, collectibles,
vintage and specialty items, small
furniture, lamps, dolls, and baby
items. A shopping experience in
the store is like a treasure hunt
with something new and unique
to be found around every corner.

all state laws and regulations.
In the presentation it was
noted that all record keeping was
adequate and correct. It was noted
that depreciation on the water
and sewer system and equipment
was included in figuring the
total operating expenses and that
the city maintained a healthy
operating fund.
Notation was made that the
city’s net capital assets were
all approximately 90-percent
depreciated and that most of
these assets were older than
the average found in most
municipalities. Eighty-percent
depreciation was shown in the
city’s enterprise fund as well.
Also of note is the report that
the water and sewer revenue
bond funds for the 1980 and 1998
bonds are both fully funded.
It was also noted that the city
had underspent its budget in the
general fund, the downtownredevelopment fund and even,
by a small amount, the streetimprovement fund.
Overall, the city was declared
to be in a healthy financial
condition, a finding that was
happily received by the board of
commissioners as well as the city
clerk and manager.
In other discussion and
action the Lake Butler City
Commission:
— Considered bids for the
provision of garbage pickup
service for the city and selected
a company to handle that service.
The WAC company was
selected as the best and lowest
bidder for the garbage contract.

provider
Bradford
Garbage was disqualified due
to the improper application
completion. The change in
service providers will take place
on June 1, and there will be
some changes in store for city
residents.
Starting June 1, curbside
garbage pickups will occur
on Tuesday and Friday (to
avoid schedule difficulties due
to Monday holidays). Each
residence will be supplied with
a single 95-gallon can, and a
second can may be requested.
The cans are called “garbage
carts” by the company and when
delivered will have a flier inside
telling the customer about the
changes they will see in their
service and setting down the
standards for such things as what
will be picked up and how far
from the road edge the carts are
to be placed.
Fees can be expected to
increase, but not by a huge
amount. An average residential
customer who now pays $10 can
expect a 15 percent-increase to
$11.50. A commercial customer
who has four cans of garbage
picked up twice a week can
expect an 18-percent increase
from their current charge of
$21.26 to a new rate of $25.
Currently, the schools are
paying $331 a week for five-day
pick-up, with that fee initially set
to increase to $435, but a WCA
representative said that rates
for the schools are still being
considered as the increase is
of some concern to the school
district administration, who only
have so much allotted in their
budget to pay for the service.
The new receptacles will be
arriving in the next few weeks
as the starting date of service
approaches. WCA stated to the
commission that they are intent
on providing the community
with excellent service and that
they will be quick to remedy any
problems that may arise during
the transition and beyond.
— Heard a report from City
Manager Dave Mecusker that, in
accordance with a request from
Commissioner Scott Cason,
the city was working quickly
and aggressively to check all
of the culverts and ditches to
assess whether or not they are
adequate to handle this year’s
storm water load. Mecusker said
that ditch clean-outs and culvert
project were being planned
and beginning to comply with
Cason’s request at the April
commission meeting.

Yellow Flies
Annoy and Pester
In Florida, the name yellow
fly is commonly used to describe
a group of about a dozen different yellow-bodied biting flies in
the Tabanidae family. However,
Florida tabanid experts recognize only one species, Diachlorus ferrugatus (Fabricius), as the
true yellow fly.
The yellow fly is a fierce biter.
Like mosquitoes, it is the female
fly that is responsible for inflicting a bite. The males are mainly
pollen and nectar feeders. Tabanids are most likely encountered
in hot summer and early fall
weather. They are active during
daylight hours.
Although it attacks throughout
the day, it is most active during
the late afternoon and on cloudy
days. It is especially common
near large bodies of water, but
tends to remain in or near forests. It is one of the few tabanids
that attacks indoors. All exposed
parts of the victim’s body may
be attacked, and since the flight
is rather quiet, a person is not
aware of the flies until the sharp
pain of the bite is felt. Domestic
animals, including dogs, are attacked readily, although the fly’s
preference for shade makes it
less of a pest to cattle and horses in open pastures. Flies are on
the wing in Florida from March
to November, although the peak

Mosquito repellents are moderately effective against the
adults except when the flies are
very abundant or very hungry.
Gloves and headnets offer the
only sure means of protection.
Deet (diethyl toluamide) is the
most effective repellent. To prevent possible development of
dangerous hypersensitivity and
systemic reactions, persons sensitive to the bites should avoid
exposure to the flies.
Currently there are no adequate means for managing populations. Traps are sometimes effective in control of small areas
such as yards, camping sites, and
swimming pools.
