I n observance of April’s Employee Appreciation Month, the Calabasas Chamber has created a special Luncheon on Friday, April 25th from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Calabasas Country Club located at 4515 Park Entrada in Calabasas. The luncheon is entitled, the Golden Lasso Employee Appreciation Day Luncheon, and will be an inspirational afternoon featuring special guest speaker Stephanie Edwards. Stephanie is perhaps most familiar to us for her 27 years as co-host with Bob Eubanks on the International Broadcast of the Tournament of Roses Parade each January 1st. For many years, she was the corporate media spokesperson for Lucky Food Stephanie Edwards Stores in the western states but most of her work for over 30 years has been as a media commentator. She was the first broadcaster to sit in the chair now occupied by Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America.” Presently, Stephanie makes about 50 appearances a year as a speaker and M.C. here and around the country; often spends weekends leading retreats for church groups, and is an active member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in nearby West Hills. To attend the April Luncheon, please RSVP to Cheryl in the Chamber office at 818.222.5680, or send an e-mail to info@calabasaschamber.com and invest $30 as a member or $35 as a non-member (and remember, no-shows will be charged). When I sat down to write F irst this article and realized that it was April, this was a sober- Immediate Past Chair Stephanie Warren (2004) Ewing & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty, 818.657.4417 ing thought. Hopefully, you can look at the first three months of 2008 with pride and a sense of accomplishment. But if that thought fills you with a little bit of pause, it is not too late to take some significant steps forward in 2008. Take a good look at your business plan for 2008, or at least your New Year’s resolutions. Have you taken steps yet towards realizing these goals? Whatever your plan for 2008, the Chamber of Commerce is here to help you. As I promised at my installation, we will be here to help you with whatever your business needs. We want to be the first thing you think of when you face any challenge or obstacle in your business. As I look back at our Chamber’s success so far in 2008, I am very pleased. We have started sales of the Calabasas Business Directory. Our Wine Tasting & Silent Auction committee is meeting monthly, preparing for this great event in June. We have had productive meetings with the city planning your Pumpkin Festival for this year. Your board of directors is forming a fundraising committee to help support the daily operations of your Chamber of Commerce. And our Installation Dinner was a fun, formal, exciting evening and a huge success. Most importantly, we have stayed on point with our mission: to enhance and support our members’ business success. We hear time and time again how our Chamber is different: we actually focus on getting members referrals. We focus on YOU, our members, to develop programs and activities to meet your needs. How are we doing? If you have an idea on something the Chamber can be doing to help you succeed, please let us know. Are you getting the support you need? Are we enhancing your business success? As we come into second quarter of 2008, we want to make sure we are exceeding your expectations. We’ll be seeing you soon! The Supervisor has fought to ensure the District is kept separate. She also discussed the recent reports that, because of Budget considerations, various health clinics operated by the County would be closed down; Cynthia said a reevaluation is underway to see if there were some method by which the clinics could be kept open. Finally, Cynthia discussed the ballot problems that occurred in the February primary for the Democrats. She said that steps were underway to ensure there would be no similar ballot problems in the June primary. Jeff Reinhardt, for the Water District, reported that the District is supportive of legislation introduced by Assembly Member Brownley which would, if enacted, permit the pass through of cost increases over which the District has no control. If the Metropolitan Water District were to increase its rates to our local District, our local District would be able to pass through those rates without having to go through the presently-required round of extended approvals. Tom Bartlett, for the City Planning Department, reported on a number of issues – the City Council has passed a resolution to enable the City to begin annexation proceedings of the Mont Calabasas area; The Council is also beginning hearings on a Planning Commission recommendation favorable to the construction of a 70,000 square foot shopping center at Lost Hills Road and Agoura Road; The Civic Center project is on schedule, and the planned move for City hall to the Civic Center is this July; and by April, the City’s General Plan Advisory Committee will have a draft revision to the General Plan ready for circulation. The Committee also discussed the impact on Calabasas of implementing Senate Bill 1818 (requiring that developers of affordable housing receive density bonuses irrespective of the original density zoning created by the City) and of complying with the “regional housing needs assessment” requirements being imposed by the State. Under the latter regulation, Calabasas must plan for 521 new housing units by 2014, 223 of which must be “affordable” housing units (20 units/acre). Finally, Dr. Jeremy Eisenstein discussed with the Committee several pieces of legislation of concern to chiropractors in this State. The next meeting of the EGAC Committee is on April 7th at noon, Fins Creekside restaurant in Old Town Calabasas. Please join us! Save the Date! The job market today labels anyone over age forty as a senior, so many Baby Boomers, due to downsizing and early retirement, will transition from a position they might have held for more than 20 years, to a passion they may have only considered briefly as a twenty-yearold. As a job development specialist, Judith gives her clients a kick-start to get them focused on a totally new career path, or a different aspect of the same career. She motivates and inspires people from all fields of life, and has had careers in the worlds of international business, food, health, fashion, education, publishing, and nonprofits. After her clients have found their career goalposts, Judith coaches them on the latest approaches to resume writing techniques, interviewing skills, how to utilize the most effective job search engines and web sites, and where to find the hidden job market. Judith lived in Europe for over twenty years, is a writer and editor, and garnered her own transitional skills over 30 years as an entrepreneur and teacher. She also speaks on communication issues and the generation gap, and ageism in today’s work place.
