(www.primaloft.com) is marking 2013 with its 25th anniversary, celebrating the brand’s heritage and position as the world leader in comfort solutions, providing high-performance insulations, yarn and fabrics. What originated as a request from the U.S. Army in the early 1980s to keep U.S. soldiers warm and dry in wet conditions, can now be found in leading global brands serving the outdoor, fashion, home furnishings, work wear, hunting and military markets. PrimaLoft was originally established as a business subsidiary of Albany International Corp. in 1988. Albany International’s reputation for developing high-performance insulating materials led the U.S. Army to commission the development of a synthetic insulation that would mimic the performance of down. Given the lack of commercially available microfibers at that time, Albany’s R&D team developed a unique process for extruding the microfibers in their lab. The ability to develop this fiber technology led to the innovation that today mirrors the structure of goose down that is warmer, drier, and softer than any other synthetic insulation. The brand’s first commercial shipment was to L.L.Bean for the Mountain Lite Parka in August 1989. By 1993, PrimaLoft moved into footwear, sleeping bags and gloves, as well as the home furnishings market with the introduction of PrimaLoft® filled bedding by Lands’ End. Today, PrimaLoft is The Luxury Down Alternative® in the home market. “Our 25th anniversary is an occasion for us to look back at our rich heritage and appreciate how we’ve played a central role in transforming the insulation category,” said Michael Joyce, PrimaLoft CEO. “We are especially grateful to our brand partners and consumers who have supported PrimaLoft. I think it’s fair to say we have strongly influenced how people stay warm, be it in the outdoors, or in the home. We are looking forward to a bright future and the promise of exciting things to come.” -more- th 2 PrimaLoft Celebrates 25 Anniversary PrimaLoft’s commitment to innovation has enabled the brand to expand into new market categories, to set trends, and become the leader in comfort technologies with best-in-class products such as PrimaLoft® One, Synergy, and ECO, PrimaLoft’s earth-friendly insulation option. PrimaLoft is also officially recognized by bluesign® and was the first branded insulation to earn the System Partner certification for sustainable textile production. As PrimaLoft celebrates its 25th anniversary, the company is embarking on a new adventure as a privately held entity led by Michael Joyce, who purchased PrimaLoft in June of 2012. Joyce and his team are now focused on reinvesting in the brand to drive innovation, growing brand awareness, elevating its partnerships and exceeding the expectations of its iconic global customers. “The PrimaLoft® brand has been an integral partner for the past 25 years, helping us to serve our core outdoor enthusiast customer that demands best-in-class, all-weather performance,” said Tom Armstrong, chief merchandising officer, L.L.Bean. “With 25 years of a proven track record, their team continues to innovate and evolve with today’s consumers, supporting our needs every step of the way.” A 25th anniversary celebration will be held at the PrimaLoft® booth #39403 on the first day of the 2013 Outdoor Retailer Summer Market show from 4:30-6pm. PrimaLoft® is a registered trademark of PrimaLoft, Inc., the brand’s parent company. PrimaLoft® is used as a down alternative insulation for the outdoor market in outerwear, gloves, sleeping bags, and footwear, as a luxury down alternative fill within the home furnishings and bedding markets, in pillows, comforters, blankets and mattress toppers. PrimaLoft® is also used in the form of yarn in socks, sweaters, base layer garments, fleece and accessories for the outdoor and home markets. PrimaLoft® History and Timeline In 1983, the United States Army Research Laboratory in Natick, MA approached PrimaLoft®’s former parent company Albany International Corp., a global advanced textile and material processing company to develop a water resistant synthetic alternative to down for use in military sleeping bags and clothing systems in variable environmental conditions. The US Army was interested in developing a synthetic insulation that would be comparable to goose down in weight, compressibility, and warmth, but also retain heat while in the presence of moisture. From April 1983 through April 1984, researchers at Albany International Research Company completed research and development to fulfill the requirements of Phase I of the US Army contract. The researchers created microfibers for use in synthetic down (PrimaLoft®) before they were available commercially. 1984 In April, Albany’s R&D team presents a report of the laboratory evaluation which showed great promise for ‘synthetic down’ as a viable down alternative. 1985 The patent for ‘synthetic down’ is filed. 1986 The patent for ‘synthetic down’ is approved in May. This original insulation would eventually be renamed PL1, and then renamed PrimaLoft® ONE. 1986 The New York Times (Sunday, November 30, 1986) runs a story titled, “The Army May Have Matched the Goose.” The article, about Albany International Corp.’s new development called ‘synthetic down’, is syndicated in newspapers around the country and is seen as the catalyst for creating widespread interest in PrimaLoft®. P.O. Box 1907 Albany, NY 12201 Phone 518-445-2238 Fax 518-447-6498 1988 PrimaLoft® is established as a business subsidiary of Albany International Corp. 1989 In August, the first commercial shipment of PrimaLoft® is sent from the production line in Albany, New York to L.L. Bean’s garment manufacturer in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. 1989 The first L.L. Bean jackets insulated with PrimaLoft® are sold to consumers in the fall. PrimaLoft® begins to reach into additional business segments, showcasing the effectiveness of the performance insulation and creating longstanding relationships with commercialized brands. 1990 A New York Times article titled “Outdoor Wear: Sorting Out the Choices,” features PrimaLoft® insulation as a high-loft synthetic alternative to down with similar performance dry, but superior performance wet. PrimaLoft® continues to grow throughout the 1990’s, with major retailers and outdoor brands utilizing the advanced fiber technology in their outerwear garments. Brands such as L.L. Bean were the first to utilize Primaloft®’s technology, leading other manufacturers, such as Ralph Lauren Polo, Land’s End and many others to follow suit. 1991 PL1 was launched as the pinnacle product of the PrimaLoft® brand, and was the initial product developed for the U.S. Army in 1986. It is an ultra-fine microfiber insulation that is warmer wet or dry than all other insulations. It would later be renamed PrimaLoft® ONE. 1992 Caribou becomes the first brand to sell PrimaLoft® insulated sleeping bags. This introduction gives PrimaLoft® an important reach into the outdoor industry and enables it to showcase its technology for the outdoor consumer market. 1992 The first PrimaLoft® insulated gloves, manufactured by Sand & Siman, become available to consumers. 1993 PrimaLoft enters the home furnishings market, with the introduction of PrimaLoft® filled bedding manufactured by Lands’ End. 1995 PrimaLoft® extends its portfolio of performance insulation technologies, by introducing PL2, which would later be renamed PrimaLoft® SPORT. P.O. Box 1907 Albany, NY 12201 Phone 518-445-2238 Fax 518-447-6498 1999 PL1 is renamed PrimaLoft® ONE, the highest performing insulation on the market for warmth, water resistance, softness and compressibility. It is regarded as the pinnacle product of the PrimaLoft® brand, and was the initial product developed for the U.S. Army in 1986. 1999 PL2 is renamed PrimaLoft® SPORT, a premium performance insulation engineered for superior warmth, water resistance, loft, softness and compressibility. 2000 L.L. Bean becomes the first outerwear manufacturer to sell footwear insulated with PrimaLoft®. 2001 PrimaLoft introduces needled insulation, renamed PrimaLoft® ECO FOOTWEAR for footwear applications. 2005 The launch of PrimaLoft® YARN. PrimaLoft® YARN is engineered with ultra-fine PrimaLoft® fibers that are half the size of typical cashmere fibers, resulting in an ultra-fine, super-soft yarn. 2006 L.L. Bean is the first company to sell socks made with PrimaLoft® YARN. 2006 Launch of PrimaLoft® PCR, later renamed PrimaLoft® ECO. 2007 PrimaLoft® PCR is renamed PrimaLoft® ECO, an insulation which uses postconsumer recycled material to create a high loft, thermally efficient, earth-friendly insulation. 2007 PrimaLoft® ONE and SPORT are reengineered and improved with enhanced performance. 2008 PrimaLoft® INFINITY is introduced. PrimaLoft® INFINITY is a fine denier, high loft, continuous filament insulation engineered for maximum warmth, compressibility and softness. 2009 adidas launches the first PrimaLoft® YARN baselayer garments. 2010 PrimaLoft is awarded compliance with the bluesign® criteria for environmental impact, establishing PrimaLoft as the first branded insulation manufacturer to obtain bluesign’s system partner status.
