Chamber Event Exceeds Expectations The chamber’s recent membership event garnered 153 members in two days. “It was a very successful membership event and we couldn’t have done it without our committed member partners, business and community leaders who made it happen,” said Bill Miles, president and CEO. The voice of business in our community was strengthened in a big way, as member volunteers reached out to others in the business community to let them know what the chamber has meant to their business and how it makes a positive impact on the business community. Hegan. Business News June Business Report Features Island Tourism Investment Destination Appeals to Multi-Gen Market Tourism projects total more than $1 billion in South Carolina. The recent May Columbia Regional Business Report finds that developers have made significant investment in new tourism projects across S.C. since last July, according to the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Lowcountry projects named included the $25 million for Harbour Town Clubhouse at The Sea Pines Resort, a $100 million investment for expansion of The Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton and $30 million for amenities at the new Moreland Village at Palmetto Bluff. The Wall Street Journal’s May article on multi-generation travel featured Hilton Head Island as the ideal setting for extended families to bond. Sharing a vacation-rental home affords more casual togetherness and provides deeper-level emotional and social benefits. In addition, research shows multigenerational groups spend more than other travelers on shared, kid-friendly activities, according to D.K. Shifflet & Associates, national tourism and travel research firm. Hilton Head Island has been named one of the Top Resort Communities in the South by ConventionSouth magazine, a leading meeting planning resource. The May resort issue features the 2015 top list showcasing a select group of 17 destinations that exemplify a true resort destination for meetings. This marks the 4th consecutive year that hospital has been recognized with a Gold-Plus quality achievement award. The Town of Bluffton announced the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies awarded Bluffton Police Department Accreditation with Excellence; the highest level of recognition. Police agencies participating in the accreditation process are reassessed every three years. CALEA representatives awarded the reaccreditation during the March conference in Reno, NV. group 46 marketing firm was honored with two awards at the American Advertising Federation’s 2015 Savannah Addy awards. Ed Houston, group 46 cofounder, received a bronze ADDY for his work on Belfair 1811 Plantation’s website redesign. Jane Fielden, account executive, was noted for her work in creating the group 46 brochure which won a silver ADDY in the category of best brochure. Pyramids, a Main Street favorite, now has a second location at The Shops at Sea Pines Center. Both offer unique gifts, accessories, and decor, and in 2015, help support the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes. Sun City Hilton Head recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a week of events including a golf and croquet tournament, tennis exhibition, 5K fun run/walk, recognition ceremony with 3rd ID army band and a closing celebration at the Lakehouse. Beach Properties of Hilton Head celebrated their 20th year in business. In honor of this achievement, the company highlighted their role as a community partner by conducting 20 Days of Giving with local, not-for-profit organizations including Palmetto Animal League, Memory Matters Hilton Head Island through Adopt-ABeach cleanup, Habitat for Humanity and Hilton Head Heroes. BB&T-Carswell Insurance Services announced that Sherry Slifer, family risk manager/vice president in the personal lines department, was honored at BB&T’s President’s Club Awards dinner in the category of Top Sales, Referrals and Service. This is the second consecutive year she has won the prestigious award. S.C. LEGISLATURE HONORS USCB CHANCELLOR JANE T. UPSHAW The S.C. House of Representatives and S.C. Senate honored the contributions of University of South Carolina Beaufort Chancellor Jane Upshaw with resolutions during their respective March session. Cited for her outstanding leadership as first female chancellor in the USC system, “Under her guidance the university received the Southern Assoc. of Colleges and Schools Initial Baccalaureate Level II Accreditation, national accreditation of the USCB nursing degree, and received National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.“ She served USCB as dean and then chancellor for 15 years and as a faculty member for an additional 15 years. Her retirement date is August 15, 2015. University of South Carolina Beaufort recently conducted its Baccalaureate Nursing Pinning Ceremony for 28 graduation candidates of the 2015 baccalaureate nursing class of the university’s department of nursing and health professions. This marked the fifth pinning ceremony since the inception of the BSN program at USCB in 2011.
