Ms. Manzo’s distinguished philanthropy career has spanned over a decade in the Greater Houston community. Through her extensive experience working with volunteer driven, non-profit organizations such as the American Lung Association, Houston Habitat for Humanity, The Greater Houston Partnership and the University of Texas Graduate School of Bio- medical Sciences she has developed skills that will be advantageous to the Habitat NWHC mission. rapport with her colleagues. We are delighted to have Ms. Manzo as a part of our Habitat NWHC family. Soleil’s passion for our mission and her leadership strengths will bring much to Habitat NWHC. She has excelled at managing staff and volunteers, developing annual campaigns, planning large scale events and designing marketing strategies. Through her successes, she has established an outstanding reputation amongst her peers and developed a great Volunteer of the Month The driving force behind Habitat for Humanity NWHC is our volunteers—those who contribute a few hours a day, a week, a month, or more to give Habitat’s vision tangible form. Every month our Board of Directors selects one of our 2,600+ volunteers to honor as the Affiliate Volunteer of the Month in recognition of all that they do for Habitat NWHC’s partner families, staff members and other volunteers. On behalf of everyone, thanks to: September—JoAnn Stevenson, Women Build Committee October—MaryAnn McElreath, Family Selection December—Jill DeVay, Development November—Jim Gattis, Construction FE B R U A R Y 2 0 1 0 R O O FR A I S E R PAGE 3 2009’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner Thank you to everyone who participated at our October, 2009 Volunteer Appreciation dinner. We would like to extend a special thank you to Lashawn Kinnebrew (Habitat NWHC homeowner) who was the evening’s keynote speaker and to Ray Wilkinson who grilled a delicious fajita dinner for all 110 attendees. At the dinner, Habitat NWHC honored 25 volunteers for their contributions to the following areas: Deconstruction: Ron Crider Family Services Support: Andy Houser Construction Crew Leaders: For at least the past year, these individuals have given of their time every Saturday to help lead the construction of our homes year round. Fundraising: Ann Eschenfelder Gary Akin Chris Keirs Frank Apollo Fiona Maughan IT Support: Dean Marschel Barbara Bobo Rob Nixon Bill Bryant Mike Payne Bill Deerhake Fran Pontesso Ken Dinges Bob Young Carla Ehlers Ray Young Office Support: Mary Brandt ReStore: Bertha Riles Jim Gattis Sherry Howard Trader’s Village: MJ Hardison The Bent Nail Award: This is a Habitat for Humanity International tradition and is an award given to the individual who “clocked” the most volunteer hours throughout the year. Linda Neilson Volunteers enjoy dinner under the tent at our Hamill Ranch construction site. Volunteer of the Year Award: Bob Young Mr. Bob Young received Habitat NWHC’s Volunteer of the Year award for going above and beyond, helping the affiliate’s partner families, staff and other volunteers. Bob helps the affiliate in many different areas. He is a construction crew leader, giving of his time every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday to lead construction. Every Saturday morning Bob gives the affiliate’s ‘Welcome and Orientation’ to 40-120 volunteers. Bob continues to enhance the affiliate’s partnership with his church, The MET. He is the co-chair of the construction committee and is a member of our Board of Directors. In addition to all of this, when asked, Bob is always willing to take on a task. Even the tasks that no one has a desire to tackle. Habitat NWHC is grateful and honored to have Bob Young volunteering to help us serve families in need by building affordable, decent housing. Construction crew leaders stand in front to accept their framed certificate awards from LaShawn Kinnebrew. PAGE 4 R O O FR A I S E R Family Advisors FE B R U A R Y 2 0 1 0 Construction Crew Leaders Family Advisors are members of the affiliate’s Family Support Committee and are the liaisons between the office and our Habitat partner families, communicating with the partner families on a bi-weekly or sometimes only monthly basis (by e-mail, phone, or in person). Family Advisors also help us empower, encourage and educate our partner families as all are first-time home buyers. We don’t want to just build new houses; we also want to help our partner families be successful homeowners. This volunteer opportunity can be very meaningful and rewarding as you get to interact one-on-one with the families we are building for. We also need individuals to help the Family Support Committee teach education courses covering financial planning, mortgages, homeowner’s insurance, HOA’s and home maintenance. This is a unique volunteer opportunity and one with leadership responsibilities. We work on our construction site every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 8am-3pm. We schedule most groups for Saturdays and will have 30 to 120 volunteers onsite. Our construction crew leaders (or Red Hats) supervise groups of 5 to 15 volunteers working on one specific project: painting, landscaping, building a fence, roofing, framing, cabinet installation, tiling, to name a few. We do everything except plumbing, HV/AC, electrical and drywall. To become a Red Hat we have individuals come out to the build site to work a few times with our construction manager and other Red Hats to determine what you are interested in leading (even if you don’t know specifically how to do it, we will train you), the number of volunteers you feel comfortable working with, etc. We will start out by pairing you with a Red Hat Mentor (a crew leader who will be onsite each time you are out) who you will work with to lead a group of volunteers. As you feel comfortable leading groups by yourself we will stop pairing you with your Red Hat Mentor and will start giving you tasks of your own to lead. To help with any of these projects or for more information about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity NWHC, please contact our volunteer coordinator MaryGrace Borisow at the affiliate office: (281) 820-2307 or mgborisow@habitatnwhc.org Win A Dream Vacation While Supporting Habitat NWHC Support Habitat NWHC by purchasing raffle tickets to win a dream vacation! The Village of Gleannloch Farms chooses one resident each quarter to honor with this award. The community newsletter stated, ―qualified nominees are active adults who volunteer their time and talents to their community and who exemplify leadership, spirit and citizenship.‖ the look of restored hope in the parent and child’s eyes,‖ stated Bob when he received his ―Expect the Unexpected award. Bob Young accepting his award from the Village of Gleannloch Farms (Picture courtesy of the Village of Gleannloch Farms newsletter) Bob Young first started volunteering with Habitat in 1998. Today he is a member of our Board of Directors, a Co-Chair for our Construction Committee and is a Construction Crew Leader teaching others how to build houses for families in need. ―The most rewarding part about volunteering for Habitat is seeing the children who now have a home to grow up in. They are the future and my inspiration to keep on building. Words cannot explain the feeling I get when a house is completed and I see Carla receiving her award from Kim Ruth (Houston Market President of Bank of America) Mrs. Carla Ehlers Carla Ehlers received Bank of America’s ―Local Heroes‖ award as part of their 2009 Neighborhood Excellence Initiative for her volunteer contributions to Habitat NWHC. Carla has held many roles with the affiliate helping with our ReStore efforts, volunteering as a member of our Family Support Committee, starting a furniture ministry for our families and as the President of our Board of Directors.
