lessons
SpringFest
Adults and Children
These classes will contain two levels of learning. All skills
from both levels will be introduced during each 30 minute
class. Adults will learn how to support, prepare and encourage their student to participate and try each skill.
AQUATIC
Swim Lessons
On the first day of group lessons, students will receive a short evaluation to ensure proper class placement, based
on skill level, not age. Classes are designed based on the guidelines of the American Red Cross so that students
are learning with others of the same ability. There may be students older/younger than your child enrolled. It is
common for a child to repeat a class more than once. Students will receive progress reports at the end of each
session, please feel free to discuss your child’s progress with your instructor. ENJOY YOUR SWIM EXPERIENCE!
Level 1: Skills introduced are: getting wet, entering and exiting the water, water exploration, floating, bubbles, passing to
instructor, leg and arm action, and water safety.
Level 2: Skills introduced are: entering and exiting the water
with assistance, dips, underwater exploration, glides, rolling
over from front to back, alternating and combined arm and
leg action, wearing a lifejacket, water safety and assists.
Learn-to Swim Group Classes
Level 1: DUCK – The objective is to introduce and learn basic
water safety and to help the student feel more comfortable in
the water, so they are able to enjoy the water safely. Participants start to develop positive attitudes, good swimming habits and safe practices in and around water. Skills introduced
are: entering and exiting the water, blowing mouth and nose
bubbles, bobbing, object retrieval, front and back glides and
floats, recover to a vertical position from a glide on front and
back, roll from back to front to back, tread water, alternating,
simultaneous, and combined arm and leg action on front and
back, water safety, recognizing an emergency and calling for
help.
Level 2: TURTLE – Participants learn to float without support
and to recover from a horizontal to a vertical position, which
marks the true beginning of locomotion. Participants will
further develop simultaneous and alternating arm and leg
actions on the front and back. Skills introduced are: entering
by jumping and exiting the water, fully submerging, bobbing,
object retrieval, front and back glides and floats, recover to
a vertical position from a glide on front and back, roll from
back to front to back, change directions while swimming,
tread water using arm and leg actions, combined arm and
leg action on front and back, finning on back, staying safe
around aquatic environments and safety skills.
Level 3: ALLIGATOR - Class objective is stroke development,
building on previously learned skills with guided practice.
Skills introduced are: entering by jumping and headfirst entry
into water, bobbing to safety, rotary breathing, survival and
back floats, changing directions while swimming, treading
water, pushing off in streamline, flutter and dolphin kicking,
front crawl, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and safety
skills.
Level 4: MALLARD – The class objective is stroke improvement. This will be accomplished by developing the participant’s confidence and increasing endurance in the strokes
learned thus far. Skills introduced are headfirst entry into
water, underwater swimming, feet first surface dives, survival
swimming, front and back crawl turns, treading water - 2
kicks, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly, importance of knowing CPR and
safety skills.
Level 5: PLATYPUS – The main objective is stroke refinement. Students will refine and coordinate techniques in the
6 strokes, while increasing distance and endurance. Skills
introduced are shallow angle dive, surface dives, survival
swimming, front and back crawl, flip turns, treading water,
front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke,
sidestroke, butterfly, importance of knowing CPR, waterborne
illnesses and safety skills.
Do you enjoy your swim lesson?
Why not enjoy your birthday or other special gathering at
the Recreation Center at Hillside Pool? Our pool is available for rent, see page 43 for details.

Private and semi-private swim lessons are recommended for adults, teens and children
(age two and older) that would prefer to have one-on-one attention. Skills taught will be
determined by age, ability level, and personal preference. Instructors will design a class to
fit the student’s needs and abilities. Semi-private lessons are great for siblings and/or family
members (maximum of 2) to learn together during the same time with one instructor. Those
opting for the semi-private lessons, please note that participants of the same ability level
work out best.

Jazz
The most American of dance forms, it’s a close cousin of ballet
using the same language but the movements are styled in a
way that separates the two techniques. Faster tempos and
isolations of the head shoulders, hips and ribs make this a
great dance to upbeat music.

Deep End Water Walking
Leave your gym shoes in the closet and hit the Recreation
Center at Hillside pool for an energizing deep water walk.
The water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes impact, while giving
you a great workout that participants do at their own pace.
Water provides twelve times the resistance of air, so as you
walk, you’re strengthening and building muscle. Walking
will be offered in the deep water only using a flotation device
such as a noodle or barbell. A perfect water workout for
non-swimmers! Fee payable to the Aquatic Staff in the pool
office.

Northville Cooperative Preschool provides a safe and loving learning environment where children
learn and grow socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually, through their play and exploration.
Our cooperative preschool is based on parents taking an active role in their child’s educational
development. Northville Cooperative Preschool provides a low student/adult ratio by having two
parent helpers assist our teachers each day. Helping in the classroom is a great way to experience
your child’s education first hand!
