Exciting times ahead not only for me but also Dunhurst and I know that I will thoroughly enjoy my final year; watching our current Block 2 pupils settle into their new lives at Bedales and having the pleasure of finishing my time in education with a fantastic team of teachers and your remarkable children (and many new pupils too). The Well was abuzz with lively conversation as we settled into our first assembly. I was delighted with the large number of pupils receiving their music certificates and we also congratulated Arthur L for gaining the Academic Scholarship to Bedales; a great achievement. A date for your diaries: Block 1 parents are invited to the Private View of the pupils’ work at the Flora Twort Gallery on Friday April 29th from 18.30 – 20.30. The pupils have produced the most amazing prints and clay work of key buildings around Petersfield and the local area, so don’t miss a chance to celebrate this fabulous exhibition and my thanks to Susan and the Dunhurst Art team for organising the event. The address is Flora Twort Gallery, Church Path Studio, 21 The Square, Petersfield GU32 3HS. Also next Friday, 29 April is LAMDA JAW and parents are very welcome to join us from 4.20 – 5.30pm (Groups) and 6.00-7.30pm (Blocks) - details on page 5. The Block 2 pupils had an amazing trip to London enjoying a Street Art tour and with photography and street art workshops. Block 1 spent Thursday off timetable as they produced a Play in a Day as part of their Modern Foreign Languages programme. Group 1 enjoyed a lambing trip to a local farm whilst our own flock of Jacob’s Sheep have their first new arrivals. Week 1 has certainly got off to a flying start! Pupils in Groups 1-3 now have the ‘Be There Bee’ trophy to support children arriving at school on time and ensuring they register with their class teacher or, if late, at Reception. Blocks 1 and 2 have ‘The Golden Thumb’ to inspire them to remember to thumb in each morning and we have seen a great improvement in registration and the time it takes for Julie to complete the checks and fire lists in morning. Your support would be greatly appreciated so that the school day can get off to a smooth start. Please may I remind all dog owners that they must keep their dogs on leads at all times when on the school grounds. Next weekend is leave weekend but please remember that it starts on Saturday at 1.00 p.m. with Boarders returning on Monday 2nd May at 19.00 and day pupils at 08.20 on Tuesday 3rd May. Have a great weekend. BACK Notices Dear Parents and Friends of Dunhurst As some of you may be aware I am running the London Marathon TOMORROW! It will be even more exciting if his story is shortlisted for the Final 50! Pandora and Jack (from Group 1) also got through to the 1st round of the Story Competition, but sadly, they didn't make it to the final top 50. However, their stories were still in the top 4%. BACK What’s Been Happening... BLOCK 2 FRENCH TRIP TO SEE ‘LES MISERABLES’ Mercredi, 23 mars, nous sommes allés à Londres pour regarder ‘Les Misérables’. By the Block 2 pupils BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U10 Rounders v Prebendal Summer had started on Wednesday with the first rounders match of the season being played in glorious sunshine. Dunhurst batted first, with some strong hitting from Sage and Sophie. We scored 2 ½ in the first innings and knew that we had to be on point with our fielding. Rosie made a great debut as bowler for the team, and Rebekah was superb on 2nd base-limiting Prebendal chances to score. Izzy was strong as a deep fielder and showed good accuracy with her throwing. Imogen did well at back stop, where she showed a great awareness of where to throw the ball. On 3rd base, Mia showed some great short barrier fielding. In the second innings, the girls knew they would have to try and improve on their previous batting score. Rebekah scored a great ½ rounder, where she sprinted to second base to beat the fielder. Rosie hit the ball hard in to the deep fielders, where Prebendal showed how accurate their passing was to limit Rosie to ½ rounder. The girls scored 2 rounders in the 2nd innings. A change of positions saw Sage go to bowler, Izzy to 1st base, Nell to a deep fielder , Rosie to 4th base and Georgie to back stop. Pandora and Sophie fielded well as deep fielder, where they moved towards the ball and showed a range of passes. Unfortunately the game ended 11 ½ to 5 ½ to Prebendal but this gives Dunhurst the momentum for future matches. Well done to Izzy for being named the bees knees. Shelley BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U11 Cricket v Meoncross A cracking start to the cricket season saw the U11 team overcome Meoncross by 30 runs. Dunhurst won the toss and elected to bat. Although the boys were a little rusty with communicating with each other and running between the stumps, a few wayward deliveries coupled with some neat shots allowed them to post a very defendable 147 at the half way point. Meoncross batted cautiously in the opening stages after the tea break, with some tight bowling and a wicket from Will M keeping their run rate down. The killer blow was delivered by Joe C a few overs later, taking 3 wickets in quick succession. The team continued to bowl and field well with further wickets from Sam G and two maiden overs by Theodore seeing out the remainder of the game. Well done to all involved on a great opening to the season. Man of the match went to Joe C for his 3 wicket haul and Theodore for his accurate bowling and consistently backing up whilst batting. Will U13 Rounders v Prebendal On Wednesday 20th April the U13A rounders team played Prebendal at home. Millie, the captain, did the toss and put the visitors in to bat. Miranda bowled brilliantly and didn’t give away any half rounders through no balls, which was excellent. The Prebendal innings was restricted to 5 ½ through sensible fielding, including good catches by Ann and Daisy. The first Dunhurst batting innings began well with lots of half rounders being scored at second post. The Prebendal bowler was less accurate than ours, which added to the Dunhurst score so, with everyone playing well, the half time score was 5 ½ to 8 ½ . When Prebendal batted again, the fielding was much tighter. Boo and Ann were relentless, throwing balls in from the deep, while Issy’s improved accuracy as backstop was noticeable. Ruby and Millie were consistent in catching on posts. Ella and Charlotte worked hard to stop the full rounders being scored, so Prebendal’s total was 8 ½. This left Dunhurst in an enviable position, in that the scores were level as they started batting. The girls were able to try out new shots and angles, as well as being able to really challenge the fielders at second post. Great batting rom Miranda, Ruby and Ella pushed the Dunhurst score to a total of 15 in reply to Prebendal’s 8 ½ so they were deserving winners. Issy and Ella were voted ‘players’ players’ for their batting and fielding contributions. From the coach: a very big thank you to Natasha, for volunteering at the last minute – ‘You were a star!’ Debbie BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U9 Cricket Spring finally arrived in the county of Hampshire on Wednesday delivering a perfect afternoon for the first Under 9 cricket match of the summer Term. Everyone was looking forward to the sound of non-leather (soft ball) on willow in this 10-a-side game. The rules were as follows: Each team started with 200 runs and every run off the bat added to the total with two runs included for a no-ball (e.g. a wide). Five runs, however, were deducted from the score if a wicket was taken, although the batsmen stayed in. The game was 15 overs a side – we’ll call it ‘F15’ from next week - with three overs being bowled to each pair of batsmen. Charles and Elwood joined Group 1 for the day, and Charles, as Captain, won the toss and chose to field first. All the boys took turns bowling one over each initially and everyone had a go at bowling overarm – a tricky thing to accomplish whilst maintaining a good line and length. The under-arm technique was also used by some to very good effect as it tended to ensure greater accuracy of delivery. Those who wanted to bowl an extra over to make up the 15 over innings volunteered to do so. Everyone tried really hard and wickets were taken by Ned (two), Ben, Harry and Zeb. The boys also rotated their fielding positions - wicket keeper and various positions on the legside and offside – after each over. Ned held one catch – transferring his goalkeeping talents superbly - and Zeb held a particularly spectacular catch diving forward off his feet to hold the ball millimetres off the grass. Ditcham’s final score was 272. Our boys then batted in their pairs and came up against some pretty hostile bowling – the majority of the Ditcham bowlers threw the ball down the pitch with great pace and accuracy giving little time or space for our players to connect with many of the deliveries. However, as is always the case with Dunhurst teams, heads never dropped and the boys kept trying their hardest. In the end our final score was 212. A cricket tea of sandwiches, chocolate muffins, fruit and juice was enjoyed by all and, all-in-all, this was a great start given the fact that many of the Group 1 boys had never played a game before and some had only had one lesson of cricket in their lives (delivered at 9am that same morning!). Thank you to Charles’ mum for supporting him and the rest of the team. Jonathan PS: For those who aren’t sure of the rules of cricket here is a famous tried and tested explanation from the archives that is fool-proof: You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game. All clear? (Any questions, please write to: Lord’s Cricket Ground, St John's Wood Rd, London NW8 8QN).
