The grain attracted mice and rats, which in turn attracted the cats. Thus began our affair with cats. In this catalog we’ll look at some of the history and myths surrounding these intriguing creatures we have come to here to celebrate. Stroking a cat can help to relieve stress, and the feel of a purring cat on your lap conveys a strong sense of security and comfort. Sir Isaac Newton is not only credited with the laws of gravity but is also credited with inventing the cat flap. A cat has more bones than a human being; humans have 206 and the cat has 230 bones. A cat's hearing is much more sensitive than humans and dogs. The cat's tail is used to maintain balance. Cats see six times better in the dark and at night than humans. Cats eat grass to aid their digestion and to help them get rid of any fur in their stomachs. Cats have the largest eyes of any mammal. The female cat reaches sexual maturity at around 6 to 10 months and the male cat between 9 and 12 months. The average litter of kittens is between 2 - 6 kittens. Ailurophile is the word cat lovers are officially called. Purring does not always indicate that a cat is happy. Cats will also purr loudly when they are distressed or in pain. All cats need taurine in their diet to avoid blindness. Cats must also have fat in their diet as they are unable to produce it on their own. In households in the UK and USA, there are more cats kept as pets than dogs. At least 35% of households with cats have 2 or more cats. When a cats rubs up against you, the cat is marking you with it's scent thereby claiming ownership. About 37% of American homes today have at least 1 cat. Milk can give some cats diarrhea. The average lifespan of an outdoor-only cat is about 3 to 5 years while an indoor-only cat can live 16 years or much longer. On average, a cat will sleep for 16 hours a day. Ahh, the life A domestic cat can run at speeds of 30 mph. The life expectancy of cats has nearly doubled over the last fifty years. Blue-eyed, white cats are often prone to deafness. The cat's front paw has 5 toes and the back paws have 4. Cats born with 6 or 7 front toes and extra back toes are called polydactyl. An adult cat has 30 teeth, 16 on the top and 14 on the bottom. There are approximately 60,000 hairs per square inch on the back of a cat and about 120,000 per square inch on its underside. Cats and kittens should be acquired in pairs whenever possible as cat families interact best in pairs. In multi-cat households, cats of the opposite sex usually get along better. A brown tabby female Maine Coon cat named Cosey was awarded a silver collar for Best Cat at the National Capital Cat Show held in 1895 in New York City, America’s first cat show. Many historians believe cats were first domesticated in ancient Egypt Cats in everyday life in Ancient Egypt Feral cats ("wild cats") naturally preyed upon the rats and other vermin that ate from the royal granaries. They earned their place in towns and cities by killing mice, poisonous snakes, and other pests. Most authorities believe was the precursor to the domestic cat was the African Wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica) which is native to Egypt. The change in temperament is attributed to heredity and tolerance of humans. Changes due to domestication follow a pattern similar to other domesticated animals including dogs and cattle. Cats as Deities The Egyptians viewed their gods not as spirits but as intelligences that could be personified in a body. The earliest evidence of cats as deities comes from a 3100BC crystal cup decorated with an image of the lion-headed goddess Mafdet. The goddess Bast was originally depicted as a fiercely protective and warlike lion, but as her image "softened" over time she became more strongly associated with domestic cats. Bast shown as a domestic cat "Then with the Norse... Cats were associated with Freyja. The name Freyja (alternatively spelt Freija, Freiya, or Freya) means 'the Lady', and she is the mistress of magic. The day Friday is named after her. Her personal transport is a magnificent chariot, drawn by two large grey cats. Perhaps Norwegian Forest Cats? They made their way into Italy where they traveled with the Romans across Europe and into the British Isles. Most historians believe domestic cats came to the new world with the earliest colonists. This makes sense as cats were always kept on ship to take care of mice and rats. The Dark Times: In the Middle Ages cats, especially black cats, became associated with witches. They were thought to be the witch’s familiar and aided her in communicating with the devil. This caused cats in general to be persecuted and killed along with the supposed witches. Some historians believe this killing of cats may have contributed to the spread of the plague because cats weren’t around to keep down the rat population that carried the fleas that spread the plague. Many other superstitions about black cats came about during this time and many of those exist today making it difficult for rescue groups to place black cats. Some Black Cat Superstitions: In Asia and the U.K., a black cat is considered lucky. In Yorkshire, England, it may be lucky to own a black cat, but it is unlucky have one cross your path. To dream of a black cat is lucky. A funeral procession meeting up with a black cat is believed to forecast the death of another family member. In 16th century Italy, people believed that if someone was sick he would die if a black cat lay on his bed. In North America, it's considered bad luck if a black cat crosses your path and good luck if a white cat crosses your path. In the U.K., switch the colors, I guess unless you live in Yorkshire. Finding a white hair on a black cat brings good luck. Don't pluck it though, or your luck may turn bad. A strange black cat on a porch brings prosperity to the owner. (Scottish Lore) If a black cat walks towards you, it brings good fortune, but if it walks away, it takes the good luck with it. The tale was written at the close of the seventeenth century by Charles Perrault (1628–1703), a retired civil servant and member of the Académie française. The tale appeared in a handwritten and illustrated manuscript two years before its 1697 publication by Barbin in a collection of eight fairy tales by Perrault called Histoires ou contes du temps passé. The book was an instant success and remains popular Warriors: A series of children's fiction novels published by HarperCollins and written by Erin Hunter, a pseudonym used by authors Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, and Tui Sutherland; the plot is developed by editor Victoria Holmes. The series follows the adventures of four Clans of wild cats in their forest homes. The four Clans are ThunderClan, WindClan, ShadowClan and RiverClan. SkyClan, the long-forgotten fifth Clan of the forest, is later introduced in the standalone novel Firestar's Quest. There are currently four series, each containing six books. Crookshanks: The pet cat of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter novels. He is described as having a "squashed face," which was inspired by a real cat Rowling, the author, once saw, which she said looked like it had run face first into a brick wall, most likely a Persian. The Cat Who...: A series of murder mystery novels by Lilian Jackson Braun. This series is called the "Cat Who..." series because each book title in this series begins with the words "The Cat Who. . .". The books feature a reporter named James Qwilleran and his Siamese cats, Kao K'o-Kung (Koko for short) and Yum-Yum. The first book in the series was written in 1966, with two more following in 1967 and 1968. Eighteen years passed until Jackson Braun published the next book in the series, and through 2007 a new "Cat Who..." title was published with some regularity. Other well known cats: Cheshire Cat Cat in the Hat Mister from The Dresden Files The cats in T. S. Eliot Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, which the play ‘Cats” is based on Figaro, Gepetto's cat from "Pinocchio" KITTENS ALTER (1) JB AB (2) DE AB (3) JR AB (4) HM SP (5) CB AB Birman Exotic Longhair (6) MW AB (7) PS AB (8) MS AB [1] [2] LEX-40 COPPER BIR-01 SEAL POINT EYED MALE WHITE KITTEN SPAY GRAND CHAMPION PURR-CUSSION VICTORIAN ROSE I-TUNE DIAMONDS AND LACE [ [301 1]] REG: LEX1110540-10-15789-FX 06/10/2011 DOB: 08/28/2008 QGCRIVERTOWN GC PURR-CUSSION SOULGUSTO PATROL S: PURR-CUSSION GC KITTY CHARM'S ENSEMBLE STARDUST OF PEIFFURR D: CAROLYN-RICHARD & KARLY PRUCHA CHNUPA&PAT HONEYCUTT B/O: JUANITACHNUPA B: ROYD & PATRICIA HONEYCUTT O: Best of Color Best of Color Best of Breed Birman LEX-38 BLUE & WHITE SPAY CHAMPION Maine Coon FACE Cat OF AN ANGEL MACPURRS MCC-02 BROWN TABBY FEMALE KITTEN LEX8110550-11-15071-FX REG: 08/02/2010 COONPALS DOB: DANCE CHA CHA S: REG: D: DOB: B: S: O: D: [9] [ 302 ] QGC MACPURRS CUDDLE BEAR FOREVER MCC2110560-11-15777-S3 GC DEWMANCATS SHOCKIN GOOD OF MACPURRS 07/12/2011 HEATHER SUSAN MACDOUGALL GRC COONPALS ENRICO CARUSO JILL GRCTHOMPSON CREE'S TAMA OF COONPALS, LE [2] MICHELE B/O: Best of Color DAWN MANIERI MCC-02 BROWN TABBY FEMALE KITTEN Best of Breed Longhair Exotic REIGNINGCATS ARABELLA 2nd Best of Breed Longhair Exotic REG: MCC2110560-11-232-S1 DOB: Maine 08/05/2011 Coon Cat QCH CREE SUNDANCE OF REIGNINGCATS S: MCC-40 COPPER EYED SPAY GRAND CHAMPION DEWISPLEAR JACKIEWHITE O OF REIGNINGCATS D: CDREAMS NAUGHTY DAUGHTY HANSBERGER B/O: KARON REG: Best ofMCC1110540-09-15074-S Color DOB: 06/18/2008 2nd Best of CDREAM Color QGH. Cats have a long and honored tradition of serving on British warships to control rats that eat the food and spread disease. The Dickin Medal was instituted in 1943 in the United Kingdom by Maria Dickin to honour the work of animals in war. It is a bronze medallion, bearing the words "For Gallantry" and "We Also Serve" within a laurel wreath. Simon was a strayblack and white tom cat brought onboard by one of the crew. http://www.purr-n-fur.org.uk/famous/simon.html Morris the Cat: Probably the most famous cat rescued from a shelter, He is the advertising mascot for 9Lives brand cat food, appearing on its packaging and in many of its television commercials. A large orange tabby tom, he is "the world's most finicky cat", and prefers only 9Lives brand, making this preference clear by means of humorously sardonic voice-over comments when offered other brands. Every can of 9Lives features Morris's "signature". Morris has appeared in other media over the years. He debuted in the Robert Altman film The Long Goodbye (film) with Elliott Gould, and starred in the movie Shamus with Burt Reynolds and Dyan Cannon in 1973. He also appears as a "spokescat" promoting responsible pet ownership, pet health and pet adoptions through animal shelters. To this end, he has "authored" three books: The Morris Approach, The Morris Method and The Morris Prescription. He was quoted at the 1993 "end of year" edition of People Magazine which noted 1993 deaths, to which he quoted a simple "Meow" in honor of the death of his friend Spuds MacKenzie. There have been three different cats who have played the famed "Morris the Cat." The original Morris was discovered at the Hinsdale Humane Society, a Chicago-area animal shelter, in 1968 by professional animal handler Bob Martwick. The first Morris died in 1978 and was subsequently replaced by more cats who played "Morris." All cats to play Morris have been rescues, either coming from an animal shelter or a cat rescue. Many common beliefs surrounding cats relate to fortune, with cats being cast as portents of either good or bad luck. Other superstitions hold that cats control or predict the weather and that they embody the souls of dead ancestors or supernatural beings. Cats as Bringers of Good Luck There are a number of traditional beliefs regarding luck and cats. In Scotland, some believed that a black kitten on the porch meant future happiness and riches. Other indicators of good luck have included: A cat at a wedding A sneezing cat Dreaming of a white cat A black cat crossing one’s path (UK, Japan) A black cat walking toward a person Beliefs Regarding the Ability of Cats to Predict the Weather In the past, many believed that cat behaviors could predict the weather. For example: A cat licking its tail or washing behind its ears meant that rain was on its way. A restless cat indicated that a storm was brewing. When a cat pointed its tail toward the fireplace, bad weather would follow shortly thereafter. Pouring or sprinkling water on a cat would make it rain. Positive Feline Spiritual Associations Cats have also been linked with positive spiritual beliefs, the best known of which is the Egyptian reverence for felines. Other examples include Latvia, where a black cat in a grain silo is a good thing because these cats are the manifestation of the harvest god Rungis, and Japan, where a cat with a black spot on its fur embodies the soul of a dead ancestor. Deities that could assume the form of a cat have included the goddess Diana in Rome, the god Ai Apaec in Peru, and the deity Li Shou in China, which had the power to ward off evil spirits. In Burma and Siam, when a holy man died, it was believed that his spirit would enter a cat. Then, when the cat died, his spirit was transported to paradise. In Scandinavia, the goddess Freyja rode a cat-drawn chariot, and farmers would leave offerings for Freyja’s cats so that their harvests would be bountiful. Similar ideas regarding cats and fertility led some Europeans to decorate cats with ribbons and send them into fields after the harvest to appease the gods. American Cat Fanciers Association, Inc. It’s Inception, Aims and Progress ....... THE BEGINNING: The American Cat Fanciers Association was formed in 1955 by a group of Cat Fanciers seeking greater flexibility in the development of cats, the activities of cat lovers and greater freedom for growth and harmony with contemporary needs of the individual breeders and the broadening horizons of the Cat Fancy at large. It was a group of Cat Fanciers in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area, comprised of individuals highly qualified in business management, organizations, legal expertise and knowledge of the Cat Fancy and Show procedures, who provided the prime force for this endeavor. The founders of this Association, along with many others, believed that a more democratic organization would be able to move forward more rapidly than the organizations or associations current at that time, due to antiquated legislative rules, had been able to do. Their dreams were not unfounded. Once the policies of this democratic Association were made known to the public, many of the leading breeders and fanciers, who long had resented the autocratic policies of the then existing organizations, joined ACFA. They believed that within the parameters, as set forth, there was room for advancement of the Cat Fancy as an organization. The members set up a Board of Directors who were to represent the various regions in developing the Association policies. Such policies could not be written into the Bylaws, Show Rules or Registration Rules without the approving vote of the membership at large. Separate Breed Sections proposed Standards of Perfection for each breed, and they, the breeders of the specific breeds, accepted or rejected the standard. Once these standards had been set they were to be changed only by the approval of the members of the Breed Section concerned, comprised of the breeder/exhibitor members. THE INITIATIVE: Many exemplary changes, advanced ideas and policies were first introduced by ACFA. Several of the modifications or policies that were popularized were: The double, triple and quadruple championship and grand championship were innovations first developed by ACFA. For the first time in Cat Fancy History, altered cats were accepted for championship competition. These alters did not compete with the whole cats, but were given their own championship classification. Still today, the alters compete in the Championship Shows under the same rules as any other championship cat. ACFA was the first to introduce the ‘multiple’ ring Championship Show, a concept that is standard in all associations today. However, until ACFA introduced the four ring Show, the common format was simply one Allbreed Ring and one Specialty Ring. ACFA was the first to provide the exhibitor the opportunity to go to a show and have their cat judged “FOUR” times, not just twice. ACFA then forged ahead to introduce the five ring show, six ring show, and then, the now popular Back-to-Back show with 8 to 10 rings in a weekend. In addition, ACFA was the first to require prospective judges to successfully complete ‘written’ exams before being licensed. Other firsts include: a training program for ‘trainee’ Judges, official Judges’ Schools [established for new and old judges alike], as well as special Breed Seminars for interested parties as well as Judges. ACFA has been innovative in recording and encouraging owners of Household Pets to enter our show halls and win titles and compete in year-end awards. Along with this concept, ACFA has also been a leader in the Junior ACFA program, enlisting, training, educating and encouraging our young people to become involved in the Cat Fancy. You will find that some / all of these concepts are practiced by all associations in existence today. ACFA TODAY: Through the years ACFA has progressed with the times, yet never forgetting those precepts on which we were founded. Here are but a few of the reasons we feel our Association is the best, most unique, serviceoriented association of its type in the Cat Fancy today: Every cat entered, judged and scored in an ACFA Show has a Master Show Record for that show year entered into the database of our computer. For each win in the Show Ring during the Show Season, from Best of Color, through Best Cat in Show, it receives a specific number of points. These points are tabulated and the ‘average points scored’ per ring are determined. This final average is used to determine our End-ofYear Awards. Awards start for the Top 3 Cats of Color of Breed and progress upwards through Top 3 Cats of Breed and then on to the Top winning cats, regardless of breed. These awards are presented both on a Regional and Inter-American level. The unique part of this system is that every cat fancier can afford to compete for the top awards each year. Since it is not a ‘total’ point system, exhibitors need not incur the expense of campaigning a cat every weekend to be in competition, as is the case with most of the other award systems in place today. The ACFA Bulletin, published bi-monthly, is designed to provide the ACFA Member with the latest information about their Association. It includes but is not limited to: reports on new policies and actions taken by the Board of Directors; a current Show Schedule; a Judges' list; a list of Breed Section Chairs; other Committee Chairs are listed; and more. ‘ACFA Yearbook”, a yearbook depicting the End-of-Year award winners, is a publication of the finest quality, utilizing quality reproduction to best display the top winning cats. It also contains breeder advertising, and many interesting articles and special features about cats and the Cat Fancy. Both the Bulletin and the ACFA Yearbook are included with membership. ACFA is continually searching to find new ways that will make the registration of cats and litters simple and easy for our customers, and still maintain the highest degree of integrity in the Book of Registry. In addition, we continue to investigate, and introduce, new services to aid our customers in other areas. Our Central Office is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week through fax, email and voice mail. Our members receive special considerations and/or discounts from sponsoring companies; reduced member pricing on cat registrations, litters, Cattery name registrations and ACFA Yearbook advertising; and a free listing on our Website with a link to your Website so that your Cattery can achieve full exposure to those looking for a kitten. Add this to the ‘personal touch’ you receive from the Staff at ACFA’s Central Office, it is evident that ACFA is sincerely concerned with the quality of service to the Fancier - whether they are a professional breeder, a hobby breeder or a cat-lover. For concerned, friendly Service -shouldn’t ACFA be YOUR Association? American Cat Fanciers Association, Inc. Titles for Household Pets are similar to the Championship titles earned by pedigreed cats. These titles are confirmed on a system of cumulative points based on the final awards received during the cat's ACFA show career. Only the highest award presented under each judge is tabulated. For instance, if a cat receives a Best Royal class award and a 5th Best HHP Final Award, the points earned for 5th Best will be recorded for the cat. Class awards made DO NOT count toward cumulative totals unless they are the ONLY points earned in that Judge's ring. ALL HOUSEHOLD PETS OVER 8 MONTHS OF AGE MUST BE ALTERED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR EXHIBITION! [Some clubs want the awards to be made even though there are not 25 cats entered in the particular specialty ring, however, in that case, ONLY Best through 5th Best HHP points will be counted toward cumulative total regardless of the award made.] Top Ten awards are always presented in Allbreed Rings unless there are less than 10 Total HHPs entered. ** Count towards cumulative total only when 50 or more HHP’s are entered in that particular ring.
