WIHS Grand Hunter Championships
Washington International Horse Show Sets the
Stage !! A record number of exciting wins at
WHIS winds up a whirlwind trip to the east coast
indoors for west coast rider John French.
Lauren Fisher and Lindsay Brock for Jump Media LLC
Washington, D.C. – October 21, 2015 – The 2015 Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) continued with its second day of competition Wednesday featuring the presentation
of Championship honors in the professional hunter divisions
at Verizon Center in downtown Washington D.C.
Representing the west coast, rider and trainer John French
(CA) dominated the professional divisions.
John French, of San Jose, CA, had unprecedented success in
this year’s WIHS competition. French capped off his time in
the nation’s capital with three Championships, three Reserve
Championships, two Grand Hunter Championships, and the
2015 WIHS Leading Hunter Rider title among other honors.
French guided Laura Wasserman’s Boss to theoverall WIHS
Grand Hunter Championship, and also won the WIHS Grand
Green Working Hunter Championship riding Lee Kellogg
Sadrian’s Sochi.
GRACE TUTON’S
BURRATA.
He received a special $5,000 bonus for the Leading Hunter
Rider Award, sponsored by Dr. Betsee Parker, and was also
presented The Robert Coluccio Leading Hunter Rider Perpetual Trophy. Laura Wasserman earned the Leading Hunter
Owner Award.
“I do not think I have ever had an indoor show like this. To win
this many Championships and be Reserve this many times as
well; it means a lot,” French expressed. “This is where I grew
up. As a kid, WIHS was the biggest show you could go to.
We did not go to the Garden; it was too far away. WIHS, you
could come and watch. It is my favorite show. I love being
in the city; I love the whole atmosphere showing in the city.”

Welcome to the
Del Mar National Horse Show
We live in a rapidly changing
world; one which can be
unkind to traditions and steadfast ways of doing things. For generations,
the horse world has had a well-deserved reputation for its legendary
resistance to even the smallest change. Weaknesses began to appear
as computers, e-mail, and the Internet gained in use and popularity.
Equestrian professionals went from “I can’t open it, I have to wait until
my kid comes home from school,” to “take a look at my website and
text me with any questions”. This once-obstinate industry now readily
embraces new technologies and puts them to work effortlessly.
But even now, for most of us at one point or another, the pendulum has
swung so far that we sometimes long for the simpler days, the slower
pace; a time when we weren’t so easily accessible and on-demand for
clients, bosses, and even family – there’s no app for that! The Del Mar
National has struggled to strike a balance as well. We constantly strive
to employ the latest technologies to give exhibitors and spectators
www.delmarnational.com the best experience through “mod cons” such as online prize lists and
entries, virtually instant Facebook results and photos, and continual
advancements in optimum footing, to high-definition video boards,
improved sound and lighting, and live-streaming the finest competition
and entertainment in the industry.
We cherish our longstanding, warm traditions in the face of a
sometimes frosty digital world with all its cutting edges. Among the
few remaining shows offering a wealth of perpetual trophies which
still travel with the winners, as well as lovely individual class trophies
and keepsake ribbons, the Del Mar National proudly extends a hearty,
good old-fashioned welcome to all!

Each class must have a minimum of two (2) judges. All judges will sit
together and provide one score. One judge must be an R judge, the
other may be either an R or r judge. The judging panel will provide
one score and the scores from each round will be either averaged or
added as specified in the prize list to obtain the overall total for each
horse. No judging panel may award the same base score to any two
(2) competitors in any one round. The first round shall be judged on
performance, hunter pace, jumping style, quality and substance, and
movement. After the judges base score is given, one point will be
added for each high option fence jumped. The Option Bonus Score
of one additional point must be awarded even if there is a refusal, rail
down or loss of good jumping style at that higher height option fence,
providing that the horse-and-rider combination does jump the higher
height option fence. (Maximum of four (4) points). The second round
shall be judged on performance, hunter pace, jumping style, quality and
substance, movement, handiness and brilliance of pace. Handiness
is defined as ground saving movement without adversely affecting
performance or style. Brilliance of pace is defined as a faster pace than
ordinary, without sacrificing performance or style. Handiness is taken
into account in the judges’ base score. After the judges’ base score is
given, one point will be added for each high option fence jumped. The
Option Bonus Score of one additional point must be awarded even if
there is a refusal, rail down or loss of good jumping style at that higher
height option fence, providing that the horse-and-rider combination
does jump the higher height option fence. (Maximum of four (4)
points). Overall Score - The final score from each round will be either
averaged or added as specified in the prize list to obtain the overall total
for each horse.
Open to all riders. To be shown over an advanced equitation course,
3´6˝ in height. Emphasis will be put on riding style, technique,
accuracy and promptness in completing the course. The time allowed
will be calculated at 375 meters/minute. Riders will be rewarded for
swiftness and executing the course on the most efficient track. Only
riders competing in the class will be allowed to walk the course. A
mandatory four (4) point deduction will be given for any jumping
faults and one (1) point deduction for any second or fraction thereof
over the time allowed.
Round II will be limited to the top six (6) riders from Round I and
will be judged over a course of 8–10 jumps. Bonus points will be given
for the successful execution of inside tracks and the rider’s ability to
complete the course in a quick, efficient manner. There will be no
time allowed in the second round.

(see GR 901.9 of the USEF rules)
2. FEDERATION ENTRY AGREEMENT: By entering a Federationlicensed competition and signing this entry blank as the owner, lessee,
trainer, manager, agent, coach, driver, rider, handler, vaulter or longeur
and on behalf of myself and my principals, representatives, employees and
agents, I agree that I am subject to the bylaws and rules of the United
States Equestrian Federation, Inc. (the “Federation”) and the local rules
of the competition. I agree to be bound by the bylaws and rules of the
Federation and of the competition. I will accept as final the decision of the
hearing committee on any question arising under the rules, and agree to
release and hold harmless the competition, the Federation, their officials,
directors and employees for any action taken under the rules. I represent
that I am eligible to enter and/or participate under the rules, and every
horse I am entering is eligible as entered. I also agree that as a condition
of and in consideration of acceptance of entry, the Federation and/or the
competition may use or assign photographs, videos, audios, cablecasts,
or other likenesses of me and my horse taken during the course of the
competition for the promotion, coverage or benefit of the competition,
sport, or the Federation. Those likenesses shall not be used to advertise a
product and they may not be used in such a way as to jeopardize amateur
status. I hereby expressly and irrevocably waive and release any rights in
connection with such use, including any claim to compensation, invasion
of privacy, right of publicity, or to misappropriation. The construction and
application of Federation rules are governed by the laws of the state of New
York, and any action instituted against the Federation must be filed in New
York State. (See GR908.4.)
3. ASSUMPTION OF RISK: By signing the entry blank, the owner,
lessee, trainer, manager, agent, coach, driver, rider, handler, vaulter or
loungeur acknowledges that horseback riding, particularly jumping, is a
dangerous activity and involves inherent risks which may cause serious
injury and in some cases death due to the unpredictable nature and
behavior of horses, regardless of their training and past performance and
expressly assumes all such inherent risks whether identified herein, in the
entry blank, or in the federation rules and regulations. A horse, without
warning or any apparent cause, can buck, stumble, fall, rear, bite, kick, run,
make unpredictable movements, spook, jump obstacles, step on a person’s
foot or push a person—all of which may cause the rider or observer to fall
or be jolted, resulting in serious injury or death. A horse may also get loose
and cause injury to an observer, rider, or another horse. A loose horse can
38
run at full gallop in a panic and run into objects, persons, or other horses.
The show ground facilities are bordered by highways/roads and thus noise
from traffic and other sources occurs that can and will cause a horse to
unexpectedly spook or react quickly. The show ground facilities contain
roads and driveways which are traversed by cars, golf carts, tractors, trailers,
and heavy equipment, all of which may spook a horse. The above warnings
and potential hazards are meant as an examples of some of the inherent
risks which may be encountered. It is understood this is not exhaustive
and numerous additional conditions and/or events may result in injuries
while participating in the competition and/or being present on the show
ground facility.
4. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: Every horse entered for competition will
be under the control of the Horse Show Management, but Horse Show
Management will, in no case, be responsible for any loss or damage that may
occur, and it shall be a condition of entry that each exhibitor shall hold the
Horse Show, its Directors and employees, the 22nd District Agricultural
Association, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds harmless for any loss or accident
to his or her horses or equipment which may occur from sickness, fire or
otherwise. Misrepresentation on the Entry Form shall result in forfeiture of
trophy, ribbon, prize money, and possible exclusion from subsequent shows.
Horse Show Management reserves the right to itself
to interpret all questions and conditions in regard to or arising out of an
incident to the show without claims for damages or recourse of any kind.
All questions not covered in these Rules and Regulations shall be decided
by Horse Show Management— their decision to be final. Horse Show
Management reserves the right to refuse, accept conditionally or to cancel
any entries, disqualify riders or exhibitors, prohibit exhibition of entries and
cancel award prizes, without claim for damages; to change any course, to
cancel or combine any unfilled classes, or to reschedule classes, after due
notice to exhibitors; to change rings or rotate or change judges and officials;
to change specifications in jumper classes in order to facilitate the time
schedule. There must be ten or more entries in a class. If not, Management
reserves the right to combine or cancel. Management reserves the right
to limit entries in a class. Refused entries will be returned. Management
reserves the right to combine split sections in Green Working, AmateurOwner, Pony or Junior Hunter if fewer than 10 entries are received by
closing date.
5. MANAGEMENT:
6. THE FOLLOWING ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH ENTRY: A) One
owner and one horse per Entry Form. Form may be reproduced; B) Social
Security number and signature of owner or authorized agent; C) Name,
mailing address, telephone and signature of trainer; D) Name, mailing
address, telephone and signature of all riders; E) Name and age of minor

Fairgrounds harmless for injury to such minor(s). The signature of

The management of the 22nd
