the Ossining Public Library
October 2016 National Hispanic Heritage Month FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR: A Great Year! This September marked my one year anniversary as Director of the Ossining Public Library, and what a year it has been! As I have gotten to know the library staff and the community, I am always struck by the genuine, warm welcome that is extended to me. Ossining is truly an amazing community, full of talent, diversity, energy, and warmth. Everywhere I go, I hear about how important the library is to the people of Ossining — and that says a lot. Communities that value their public libraries are communities that thrive. As we work on the final stages of our library’s long range planning process, a process that we began last winter, we are reminded of how rich Ossining is in culture, natural beauty, educational and recreational opportunities and how the library plays, and will continue to play, a key role in our community. We look forward to completing our long range strategic plan and working to meet the needs that you, the Ossining community, have identified. —Karen LaRocca-Fels, OPL Director Phantoms of the Hudson Valley Presentation Wednesday, October 5th at 7 p.m. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Saturday October 8th at 3 p.m. There is a world of mystery and make-believe along the Hudson Valley. Book Club Shelf Bodies in the Library Book Club The Red Mandarin Dress October 7 at 12 PM in the 2nd floor conference room. A serial killer is stalking the young women of Shanghai. The killer’s calling card is to leave the victims’ bodies in well trafficked locations, each of them redressed in a red mandarin dress. With the newspapers screaming about Shanghai’s first serial killer, Party officials are anxious for a quick resolution, and the police are under pressure from all sides. Something has to give. The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny November 4 Chaos is coming, old son. With those words the peace of Three Pines is shattered. As families prepare to head back to the city and children say goodbye to summer, a stranger is found murdered in the village bistro and antiques store. Once again, Chief Inspector Gamache and his team are called in to strip back layers of lies, exposing both treasures and rancid secrets buried in the wilderness. No one admits to knowing the murdered man, but as secrets are revealed, chaos begins to close in on the beloved bistro owner, Olivier. How did he make such a spectacular success of his business? What past did he leave behind and why has he buried himself in this tiny village? And why does every lead in the investigation find its way back to him? As Olivier grows more frantic, a trail of clues and treasures lead the Chief Inspector deep into the woods and across the continent in search of the truth, and finally back to Three Pines as the little village braces for the truth and the final, brutal telling.
