The Circuit Rider - Asbury United Methodist Church
JANUARY 2015 | VOLUME 22 | ISSUE 1 The Circuit Rider Asbury United Methodist Church Newsletter Serving God in the community for over 150 years OUR STAFF “This is a day of new beginnings, time to remember and move on, time to believe what love is bringing, laying to rest the pain that's gone.” Dear Friends, Happy New Year to you and your family! The New Year always brings hope for bright, new opportunities: It is a time of new beginnings. New Years means for many (45% of Americans), making resolutions. I read recently that, “People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions” (Journal of Clinical Psychology, University of Scranton: January 2014). Leave no doubt about what your plans are and you’ll have a greater chance at success. Leave no doubt as to what you will do in this New Year to grow in your relationship with God. This can be done in many different ways and how each person experiences growth in God will be different from others. Seek God’s guidance: pray, asking God to show you a way to know God this year. Some suggestions that might help you get started: *Plan for time to be with God, and if possible, be free of distraction: in a quiet corner of your home or another location. *Take time to walk or hike and listen for God guiding you. *Join a class to study the Bible or read a particular book that will explore an aspect of our faith. *Take a retreat-alone or with others. If you are ready to take a next step in your faith journey, but are unsure as to where to begin, please know that I’m here to have some conversation, as are others. We share the journey of faith and we can learn much from one another. If we can talk to one another, we are able to define our plans and achieve greater success. Let’s do it! Christ is alive, and goes before us to show and share what love can do. This is a day of new beginnings; our God is making all things new. ~Brian Wren, 1978 Pastor The Rev. Laura L. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, and the winds whipped up along with lightning, the mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her little girl walking along. At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile. More lighting followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile. When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?" The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture." The deadline for the February Circuit Rider is Sunday, January18th. Please leave all articles in the mailbox in the church office or e-mail them to: asburysecretary@sbcglobal.net.
