T
he Shelby County Farmers Federation is a membership organization,
built by farmers, as an advocate for agriculture, family values and good government to improve life for all the residents
of Shelby County.
The Federation supports Shelby
County’s $1.1 billion agriculture and
forestry industries through youth
programs, education and promotion of
commodities grown in the county.
The efforts of the Shelby County
Farmers Federation help to strengthen
the county’s farm community and
provide healthy, locally grown food for
Shelby County families.
Members enjoy access to great
benefits including savings at many
major retail stores and excellent rates on
home, auto and life insurance.
The Shelby County Young Farmers
program promotes the development of
agriculture’s next generation through
educational programs and competitive
events hosted at the state and national
level.
Anyone between the ages of 17-35
who is interested in agriculture can
become involved with the Young Farmers program.
The Young Farmers program offers
many exciting statewide events and
opportunities to travel and network
with other young agriculturists all across
Alabama.
The Shelby County Young Farmers support local FFA chapters through
activities that include local farm days
and a field trip to the Sunbelt Ag Expo in
Moultrie, Georgia.

the Shelby County FFA construction
The Shelby County Farmers Federation and Alabama Farmers Federation awarded three $1750
scholarships to local students seeking agriculture-related degrees from Auburn University. They
are, from left, Noel Welch, Trey Colley and Zachary Smith. These scholarship are given to high
school seniors and college students seeking agriculture-related degrees at Auburn University or
Alabama A&M University.

Enrichment.

The Shelby County Women’s
Leadership Committee helps stimulate
the interest and enthusiasm of Farmers
Federation women in the organization
and its programs assist with developing
and carrying out policies.
The committee works with family
and consumer science teachers at local
high schools to encourage cooking
competitions among students. In addition to financial support, the committee
helps organize and judge the events.
Nathaniel Ruiz, a student at Hope Christian
School in Shelby County, won first place in the
Alabama Farm-City Multimedia Contest for
ninth through 12th grades. Ruiz and his school
each received $300 from the Alabama Farmers
Cooperative (AFC) at the Farm-City Awards
Luncheon April 2 in Birmingham.

County Officers and Directors
Participation in the governing process is an important part of the
Shelby County Farmers Federation. County leaders and members help
improve life for all county residents through political involvement. The
organization helps to elect candidates who share its values. Above,

Agriculture Impacts Shelby County
A
griculture is a major contributor to the economy of
Shelby County. A recent study conducted by Auburn
University reveals agriculture and forestry generate $1.1
billion for the county’s economy and are responsible for
14,262 jobs.
Greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production is the
largest agricultural commodity in the county, contributing
17.1 percent of the county’s total agricultural and forestry
production. The green industry has a $12.2 million annual
economic impact on the county and provides 186 jobs.
Timber covers 62.8 percent of the surface land area
in Shelby County.
