Special points of interest: Spring Season 1 Intramurals Fall Season 2 Intramural Champions DodgeFest Wrap Up Lift of the Month Special Events Schedule Top 100 Workout Tunes of 2008 Director’s Corner Rec-Y of the Month Inside this issue: Group Fitness Class DEMO Week The Rec Sports Department is offering a Group Fitness Class Demo Week. Demo Week is designed to provide interested participants the opportunity to check out numerous group fitness classes. All classes during demo week are free. The regular Spring 2009 Group Fitness schedule begins January 19th. Regular Group Fitness classes are free to students and alumni. Employees may purchase Group Fitness Passes at the Mathy Center Front Desk. To view a complete schedule of the Spring Group Fitness Classes, please visit our website. Special Events There have been some events added to the Special Events program. A Snowbowl (outdoor flag football) will take place in the afternoon on February 11. There will be an indoor Ultimate Frisbee event on March 11th at the Mathy Center. Due to popular demand, there will be a Volleyball T-shirt Exchange Tournament on March 18th at the Mathy Center. Rec Pass The Rec Pass incentive pro- gram is no longer new, but with many individuals making New Year’s Resolutions to work out more and lose weight, the Rec Sports Department would like to remind all users that they offer the Rec Pass Program as an incentive for working out. Each time participants of the program visit the Mathy Center they are one step closer to receiving a reward for their hard work. The cost is $2. Stop by the Front Desk to sign up and ask for more information. Intramurals Intramurals 1 Intramural/ DodgeFest Wrap Up 2 Lift of the Month 2 Special Events Schedule 2 Top 100 Workout Tunes of 2008 3 Director’s Corner 4 “REC-Y” of the Month 4 The beginning of the spring semester marks the beginning of the Spring Intramural seasons. There are a variety of sports available this semester. Season One registration is currently underway. The deadline for Season One registration is Thursday, January 22 at 5PM. So grab friends or acquaintances and form a team! The Season One schedule is as follows: Sunday: Bowling @ Pla-Mor Lanes Monday: Competitive Volleyball @ Mathy Center Tuesday: Soccer @ Mathy Center Tuesday: Dodgeball @ Western Wednesday: Basketball @ Mathy Center Thursday: Rec Volleyball @ Mathy Center There will be a Free Agent Meeting for those participants interested in playing intramurals, but who have not yet found a team. All Free Agents should register online and attend the meeting on January 22 at 8 p.m. in the Mathy Center. A captain’s meeting will be held Thursday, January 22 at 8:30p.m. in the Mathy Center. Intramural/DodgeFest 2008 Recap Fall 2008 Season 2 Intramural Recap The second season of intramurals was a hit. There were 752 participants between 4 nights and 2 venues. Congratulations to this season’s champions!! Monday Competitive Volleyball: Starscream’s Brigade Wednesday Basketball: Nuff Said + Ted Scram Pictured: Ram Rod Thursday Recreational Volleyball: The Plungers Pictured: Nuff Said + Ted Scram DodgeFest 2008 DodgeFest 2008 was a success. There were 8 teams that participated in the event on December 6th. The day began with a pool play amongst the teams. Teams were then able to watch the celebrity teams face off. The Firefighters battled against the Z93 Radio DJ’s. Following the Celebrity Game, teams were bracketed into a double elimination tournament. Teams battled and fun was had by all! In the end, team Ram Rod was named the champion, and the Clown Punchers came in a close second. Team Strike XXX was named the Best Dressed Team, and the team with the best sportsmanship was Hand Tossed OR STUFFED. DodgeFest is an annual event and will be held again in November 2009. Lift of the Month: Swiss Ball Chest Press Do: 3-4 sets of 6-8 reps Weight to use: 5lbs10lbs Pictured: Clown Punchers A: Holding a dumbbell in each hand, lie with your shoulders centered on a stability ball so head is supported. Place feet shoulder-width apart and extend arms over chest, B: Simultaneously bend your right elbow to lower the weight next to your right shoulder as you lower left arm out to the side to shoulder level, elbow slightly bent and palm facing up. Hold for 1 count, then bring both arms over chest again and repeat, switching arm positions, to complete 1 rep. (note: be sure to keep your back and bottom straight to work your core and lower body) Start (A) End (B) Special Events Schedule Pictured: Strike XXX Pictured: Hand Tossed or STUFFED The Special Events Program has seen significant growth since the Mathy Center opened in 2005. New this semester are more weeknight special events. As mentioned in the opening article of this newsletter, the program has added three new events to the Spring 2009 calendar. Special Events are a great way to participate in a physical activity, without making the 5-week commitment of the intramural program. We kick off January with the Group Fitness Spring semester DEMO Week. Registration for intramurals is well on its way and there are plenty of special events for you to participate in.
