REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT
The 2014 AGM saw James Dolahenty voted in as President, sadly due to health reasons James had to resign in
February so as Vice President I stepped into the role.
As many of you know the GDSFA appointed a Director of Referees to oversee appointments, that role was handed
to Steve Tonkiss. After much toing and froing and the involvement of FNSW we got off to a working relationship.
I would like to thank the committee for their help and understanding this season:











Joseph Rovella, our Secretary who seems to never sleep;
Mike Weekes our Treasurer who makes sure you all get paid;
Steve Prattent, chair of the TSC, some very informative presentations, always fun;
Brad Mitchell, Richard Clarke, Warren Kinney and Soheil Adabjou who helped Steve with courses;
Dale Bromfield and Jarryd McFarlane, our Senior and Junior Ordinary members respectively, always happy
to help out where they can, especially if someone has had a rough day;
Trent Kiner, our Appointments Officer often a thankless task working into the wee small hours;
Warren Kinney as the Mentoring and Assessment’s Officer, a hard role but we are getting through them
pretty quickly;
Emma Higgins our Liaison Officer who always seems to find some great things for the Raffle;
Rod McFarlane who keeps us in gear;
Richard Baker for keeping the website up to date;
Brad Mitchell and Elliott Moretti, our Judiciary Liaison officers who make sure your reports are up to
standard.
On the refereeing front mention should be made of Hugh White who FNSW saw fit to send to not 1 but 2 State Titles
in the same year, first time I am aware that has happened with one of our juniors, well done Hugh
Jarryd McFarlane who had the honour of doing the U18 NPL1 Grand Final, a great achievement for one of refs to
do the GF at the top level in the state.
As we head into 2016 we have another challenge in front of us with some GDSFA clubs looking to break away and
form a new Association based in the Hills. At this stage indications are that FNSW WILL NOT be sanctioning this
competition so the way ahead will be tricky again, the committee will keep you up to date as much as possible and I
am hoping that Kris Griffith Jones will be able to give us an update at the AGM, A League commitments
notwithstanding. Nevertheless, if Kris is unable to attend the committee will be looking to have an information
evening with Kris later in the year when hopefully the situation will be clearer, but remember that if you wish to
progress and the Hills is not sanctioned then you will need to stay with the oldest Referees Association in the
country.
I wish you all a good break and look forward to seeing you back, whistle in hand ready to tackle whatever we face in
the New Year

REPORT FROM THE SECRETARY
The start of the 2015 season was by far the most interesting in the history of the Association. This is how we
started off the 2015 season with an email to GDSFA dated 6th November 2014. Remember that our AGM was on
30th October 2014:





We have had our AGM and I am in charge of the ship for the next two years for the referees association.
We have a couple of new faces and we are looking to have a dinner on Sunday, 23 November.
I would like the football association board and staff (and the better halves as well) to join us for the night.
A large get together but a simple one, to meet and greet in readiness for 2015.
The details are below. Let me know.
st
This is how the GDSFA started off the 2015 season with an email to GDFRA dated 21 December 2014:







I would like to inform you that on the 20th December 2014, the GDSFA board voted to be the governing
body of its own referees division commencing 1st January 2015. Therefore the GDSFA gives notice to the
GDFRA they will not be providing them games from any competitions governed by the GDSFA from
January 2015 onwards.
I acknowledge that the GDFRA has a deep history within FNSW and I would hate the achievements and
legacies of past members be lost to future referees. Therefore I hope the MC will act in the best interest of
its history, its present and future members by holding a SGM to give the members an opportunity to vote
whether they would like the GDFRA name to be carried over to the new referees division. The GDSFA
would like the members decision regarding the GDFRA name finalised by 31st January 2015.
In any case the board agreed that they would recognize life meberships, years of service and perpetual
awards of referees that join the new referees division.
I also hope you will inform your members within the next 48 hours of the GDSFA boards decision as
Myfootball opens for registrations 1st January 2015.
If the Management Committee has any questions I will make myself available to meet with the MC on a
night convienient to both parties. Otherwise you can contact me on the number or email listed below.
I look forward to your support to make this an even more streamlined process for the benefit of the current
referees.
I do not have the email addresses of all members of the MC so can you please forward this email onto the
MC members whose emails do not appear.
From there the Committee’s attention was devoted towards working towards securing a competition. Members
cannot begin to calculate the hours spent in meetings which included other Football and Referee Associations.
This distracted the attention of the Committee to a point where additional pressure was placed on the few to
ensure it was business as usual.
As you read other reports such as the Appointments, and TSC, you will not notice a short fall in arranging courses,
and appointments. Such is the loyalty of the Committee.
During the year there were five general meetings, an outdoor session in April and the annual seminar in March.
This is how members attended General Meetings.

REPORT FROM THE TREASURER
Notes to the financial statement for the year ended 30th September 2015.
This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting
requirement of the Association Incorporations Act 2009(“The Act”) and the constitution of Granville District
Football Referees Association (“the Constitution”). The management committee have previously
determined that GDFRA is not a reporting entity because in the management committee’s opinion there
are unlikely to be users who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy
specifically meet all of their information needs. The Following points have been considered to determine
non-reporting status.
Stakeholder, clubs and teams do not significantly rely on the financial capacity of the association for
members to arrive at matches, the geographic nature of the association is across four council areas of
Sydney, management is run by members who are not paid, management expenses / honorariums are
paid impact to community is limited affecting only one of many sporting organisation within the districts
covered, minimal outside funding other than through affiliated bodies or members is received, these
bodies may command reports that they require.
This report has been prepared in accordance with section 47 of the Act as a Tier 2 entity and section 30
(iv) of the constitution. No Australian Accounting Standard or other authoritative pronouncements have
mandatory applicability for a special purpose report and consequently none have been applied.
No audit of this financial report is required by the Act and the management committee have taken the view
that due to the prohibitive cost of having an audit conducted and the facts that the Act does not require an
audit, that no audit will be undertaken unless specifically directed to do so by the members. The
Constitution is noted as having been written many years ago well before the legislation with section 30(iv)
only requiring the financial statement required under the Act to be prepared.
The financial report is prepared on an accrual basis except where noted otherwise and is based on
historic costs and does not take into account the changing value of money or, except where specifically
stated, current valuations of assets. Specific accounting policies are noted following.
 Administration fees / levies are recorded as due to the association effective on the day of the
matches.
 Interest revenue is recorded when received
st
 Membership fees are recorded when due and at 1 January each year.
 Uniforms & Equipment sales are recorded upon delivery of the supplies to members
 Referees fees are not considered income of the association and are separately reconciled
 Affiliation fees are based on current year membership numbers and are recorded in the current
year FFA accreditation is provided for as an expense in the current year for new members
through courses. While FFA reaccreditation fees have been deducted from members who have
joined more than 4 years ago and are required to re-sit accreditation exams this year.
Granville District Football Referees Association – 2015 Member’s Annual Report
Page 9
 Insurance affected for both the management committee and members is via affiliated bodies.
 No further insurance are held by the association indemnifying any person.
Statement by the management committee for the year ended 30th September 2015.
In the opinion of the committee of the Granville District Football Referees Association Inc. (GDFRA) the
financial statement set out in the attached statement of income and expenditure, statement of assets &
liabilities, reconciliation of referees fees and supporting schedules & notes.
o
Present a true and fair view of the financial position of GDFRA as at 30th September 2015 and its
performance for the year ended on that date in accordance with the association. Incorporation
Act 2009 (“The Act”) and the constitution of GDFRA (“The Constitution”).
o
At the date of this statement there are reasonable grounds to believe that GDFRA will be able to
pay its debts as and when they fall due.
This report has been prepared by the treasurer, an Accountant. It is noted that the treasurer is not an
independent person in preparing this report.
Simon Ford
Joseph Rovella

Recommendation:
 The Assessors & Mentor Development reimbursement fees for 2016 be increase
1. Full written assessment on a senior referee of $ 40.00
2. Full written assessment on a junior referee of $ 30.00
3. Mentors of senior / junior referee of $ 15.00
The impact of the $10.00 increase in assessment fees is that in 2015 this would have been
increase in expenditure of $ 520.00 while in 2014 the increase in assessment would have resulted
in an increase in expenditure of $ 1,070.00 for that year. I believe it is well over due to increase
the reimbursement for these evaluations of our referees and encourage more assessment to be
carried out in 2016 within the association. Also that the 7.5 % levy applies to the senior and junior
assessment payments:
 That the 7.5 % levy remains at its current rate for 2016.
 Within the accounts I have provided for the honorarium of $3,700.00. I recommend that this be
distributed between the president, secretary, appointment officer, the appointment committee
members (2) and the treasurer. On the following bases $750.00 to president (JD / SF),
secretary(JR), appointment officer (TK), treasurer (MW) and $350.00 each to two members of the
appointment committee.(JR, SA)
 That the association looks to introduce a rebate and rewards members for doing extra games
through the season so as to increase the coverage of games. My recommendation is that this
rebate is paid at the end of the season and the following number of games must be reach for the
reward to be trigged to members. - (i. e at 40 games and less than 65 the rebate is $5, at 65
Granville District Football Referees Association – 2015 Member’s Annual Report
Page 10
games and less than 90 the rebate is $10, at 90 games and less than 110 the rebate is $15, at
110 games and at less than 130 the rebate is $20, at 130 games the rebate is $25. Therefore if a
member does 67 games for the season the rebate payable to him/her would be $10, while a
member completing 89 games would also for paid a rebate of $10. These rebates are free of the
7.5% levy on games.
The cost to the association if this rebate had been payable in 2015 would have been $445, while in 2014
the cost to the association would have been $535. The association can well afford this payment. I would
exclude myself from this rebate if it is adopted by the members.
 That the association look to scan all its old records and store them in the clouds or on an external
hard drive and bite the bullet and dumps its old records that are costing the association $1542 a
year.
 That the current membership fees be maintain at their current levels of $ 95 and $ 75 respectfully
for senior and junior members.
 That the association looks to reduce the cost to new members joining the association by reducing
the cost of uniforms and the course fee to a level of $220 for juniors and $240 for seniors. (This
recommendation is for the management committee to look at).
Base on this year numbers the cost to the association of this $20 reduction would have reduced income
by $1,300.
Given these reduce income and increase in cost recommendation are under $3,000 based on this year
numbers the association can well afford to increment these recommendation and still return a profit for the
year.
 That the association looks to have its books reviewed. I have asked Warren Kinny to carry out a
review of our accounts for the last 12 months. I did inquire with the auditor who previously did the
audit for the association back in 2010 and he wanted a minimum of $4000 for 20 hours work. The
association is not required to have our books audited. The association could put the cost of an
audit to better use in the association.
 That the association endeavors to make closer tied with the clubs in the association and gain their
support for our referee courses thus increasing coverage of games throughout the association.
 That the association aim for a coverage rate of 85% or higher in 2016.
 All of these recommendations might not be practical to increment in 2016 given the formation and
startup of the plan Sydney Hills Football Association in 2016. With GDFRA being an affiliated
member of FNSW we will be unable to participate in an unsanctioned competition.
 That the association looks to make more investing in assets to stream line the delivery of
information to members by investing in technology. Given that our assets in the accounts are
almost totally written-off and the funds the association has up its sleeves.

TREASURER’S Report
I would like to especially thank Simon, Joseph, Trent, Steve, Soheil, Rod and Emma for all their help and
guidance during the year. The result could not have been achieved without all the hard work and
dedication of these people and the other members of our committee Dale and Jarryd and all our members.
Yes the year has been full of distraction and the questionable attempt by the football association to
exclude us from the competition. The sad point being our coverage of games was down and our member
numbers were down by 28 members from last year.
This year result saw a profit of $ 9,675 mainly achieved by the reduction in expenditures for the year being
down by $ 7,420 compared to last year expenses.
1. The main areas of cost saving were the nonuse of a personnel trainer for our fitness session
which created a saving of $ 2,154.
2. The expenditure for courses run by the association were down by $992
3. Our affiliation fees payable to FNSW are down by $1,200 but the downside of this is reduction is
in membership numbers which lead to reduce coverage of games by the association.
4. Our depreciation expense is down this year by $1,737 because of the action taken in 2014 to write
off assets greater than three year in the accounts.
5. Our expenditure for assessment and mentor fees were down by $ 1,980 due to the reduce
number of assessment carried out, in the association this year. It is hoped that by increasing the
remuneration for these services, it will lead to greater number of assessment in 2016.
6. The year also saw the reduction in purchases of uniforms and equipment and cost saving to the
association of $2,405 for cost of goods sold.
7. Expenditure for Honorarium increase due to the members voting at the 2014 AGM to increase
these payment to the executive committee in 2014 and the under provision in the accounts by the
treasurer by $1,250.
8. Expenditure for Trophies and badges has increase this year because of the doubling of last year
order for pins for 10year service increase in costs of $458.
9. This season saw the increase in the referees account with an increase in expenditure to $ 845
and increase of $465. The $845 represents payment to A/R’s not pass on to clubs because of the
non-showing of a senior official for the games they were on.
10. As was mention at last year AGM I expected increase in the costs of arbiter due to the falling
Australia dollar making the cost of our appointment system more costly to us by $580. I would
expect this to also be the case for next year with the Australia falls still having a negative effect in
exchange rates to US dollars.
In regards to income for the year: ----1. Membership registrations were down with 28 less members this year, thus leading to reduce income
of $798.
2. The amount of funds raised by the levy was down by $2,015 because of reduced coverage.
3. This year the association did not receive a grant from the NSWSRI. While last year was $3,737.
4. The amount raised by the issuing of fines to members was down by $2,210 this in part was cause by
the change in the appointment officer.
Granville District Football Referees Association – 2015 Member’s Annual Report
29
5. The year also saw reduce income from referees courses with fewer new members joining our ranks
than in previous years by $1,025.
6. The year also saw the reduce level of sales of uniforms and equipment to members by $2,509 this in
part was caused by fewer people doing the referees course this year and members having purchase
uniforms last year.
The accounts included accrual for the following 1. Catering costs for AGM at Merrylands Bowling Club $860
2. Cost of Trophies for presentation at AGM $820
3. Cost of badges for presentation at AGM (i.e. 10year, 20year, 35year service to the
association) $352
4. Mobile phones costs from Optus & Telstra. $65 & $90 respectfully for the period from the 10th
of September to the 30th September.
Our statement for Asset and Liability saw our funds at the Bank increase over the last financial
year with the clubs in the association doing the right thing and paying us on a more timely bases
and the reduction in expenditure over the period help to increase our liquidity.
In regards to uniforms and equipment Rod has been able to reduce our holding in uniforms by
$1,696. Well done Rod.
Our level of debtors is on par with last year figure at $49,152 and at 15/10/15 this figure is down
to $14,745.50.
The reason for the large jump in creditors referee fees is caused by the delay in payment to
senior referee members, whose payment has been withheld until after the AGM. I would like to
thank all members for agreeing to this at our last meeting in August.
The creditors other amount are funds payable to FNSW for affiliation fees for 2015 of $10,000
and $2,904 payable FFA for accreditation fees for 2015 and 2014 reaccreditation.
The surplus of $107,537 will help carry the association through the initial months of next year
outgoings before the season begins and the payment to members for the first month of the
season.
In regards to the accounts, I close-off invoicing to the clubs on the last Sunday of the month
except for final series of games and issue invoices to the clubs by the 15th of the new month.
th
Between the last Sunday of the month and 15 of the new month all referees payment are
process into the MYO system and the arbiter system.
I would like to once again thank all the members for their support over the last year in being patient
with your payment and I hope to see you all returning in 2016 and having a healthy festive season.

At the time of going to press, the winds of change are still amongst us with the Sydney Hills
association formation and some of my recommendation might not be financially variable in 2016.
You’re faithfully,
Mike Weekes.

Below statistics is on appointment refusals by members. A no show is where a member accepted, but
did not turn up. A decline is where after being available and appointed the member declined the game.
A turn-back is similar to a decline, but actioned by the appointments officer on behalf of a member.
Not all appointment refusals are unreasonable. The appointment system, arbiter is not capable of
recording the nature (reasonableness) of a refusal.

Declines result in the loss of thousands of dollars of levies to the association. It also equates to pointless
consumption of tens of hours of Appointment Sub-Committee’s time.

If we had the numbers in our Elite Group, I could have accepted two and sometimes three Regional

Granville Rage – Hills Brumbies – Rydalmere Lions. John Levvell and I are hopeful subject to numbers,
to expand our one field allocation for 2015, to two fields in 2016.

TECHNICAL SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT
2015 was my first year as Chair of the Technical Sub-Committee after being a member of the TSC for the
past couple of years. I can honestly say it was a turbulent year for the whole Branch and a real eyeopener for me to be involved at MC level for the first time. I will leave it to others to comment on the
direction of the Branch however, and stick to the coaching and training activities of the TSC.
COURSES
We ran 3 Level 4 Referee’s courses during 2015.
1. Course 1 at Merrylands Bowling Club:
2. Course 2 at Castle Hill Utd clubhouse:
3. Course 3 at Baulkham Hills Sporting Club:
26 attendees 9/2/15
29 attendees 10/3/15
15 attendees 19/4/15
From these courses 66 attendees joined the Branch and 4 are refereeing SSF matches at Baulkham Hills
Soccer Club. We also had members attending upgrade courses at FNSW.
 Course 1 Level 3 Theory:
7 attendees 16/6/15
 Course 2 Level 2 Theory: 9 attendees 17/6/15
All attendees passed the Level 3 Theory and all the attendees who attended the Level 2 Theory are in
various stages of passing the Level 2 Theory examinations. Congratulations to all those members who
have attempted to upgrade their qualifications through the season; I would also encourage all members
that haven’t attempt further study to do so in 2016 with the support of the Branch and FNSW.
We are working towards implementing the use of the MyFootballClub website to co-ordinate all our
training/upgrade course activities, and also to update everyone’s qualifications in QMS (Qualification
Management System). This is a work in progress and one of my main focus areas for next season. Please
be patient if your qualifications aren’t up to date online, the TSC will be working hard to rectify this
situation in 2016.
PRE-SEASON 2015
This year we implemented a pre-season program open to all members. We offered a run at Parramatta
Park and then some drills “boot camp” style for a few weeks. Whilst not hugely attended those that did
attend got some benefit from it and we are encouraged enough to plan for another pre-season program for
next year. Keep an eye on the website and social media for news of the 2016 program. It would be great
to see more members attend these activities as they are great team building sessions as well
Big thank you to Dale Bromfield for running those training sessions and to Emma Higgins for sorting out
our booking with Parramatta council.
TRAINING / FITNESS TESTING 2015
Another new innovation was the establishment of regular fortnightly training. We were offered the use of
Hazel Ryan oval and we managed a few nights there before bad weather caused the ground to be closed
every time we tried to have a session!
This was an innovation that grew in attendance from the first session which is very encouraging and
something I am sure we can improve on in 2016 and possibly add some technical education sessions for
the members.
The TSC also ran a number of fitness tests for members to pass one of the criteria’s for appointments to
semi-final and finals matches.
Big thank you to Richard Clarke, Soheil Adabjou, Emma Higgins and Joe Rovella for their invaluable help
and support in running these activities for the members.
As mentioned it has been a turbulent year for the Branch but still one that I have enjoyed immensely. It
was been a great pleasure to work with a great bunch of passionate like-minded people, so to all the
members of the MC, and the TSC and to my fellow Referees I have worked with this year, thank you all
again very much and I look forward to seeing you all next season.
Regards,
Stephen Prattent

Assessment and Mentoring Coordinator – 2015 Annual Report
Introduction
2015 has been a challenging year in many ways for our association. With the uncertainty at the start of
the year around the intentions, actions, and relationship with GDSFA, combined with a number of other
factors causing a significant drop in membership, the branch found itself working hard just to achieve
reasonable coverage figures week to week.
This shortage of available members was also felt in the area of assessment and mentoring with the loss of
availability of 9 assessors as well as 4 of our most regular mentors who were unavailable due to changed
work commitments, State League, health reasons, or simply because they were extremely busy
endeavouring to help improve game coverage.
The Year in Summary
As a result of all the above factors obviously our achievements in the area of Assessing and Mentoring
were down on 2014. Nevertheless, we still managed to achieve the following :
Mentoring Appointments
27
Assessments of Junior Members
20
Assessments of Senior Members
34
TOTALS

A big thank you also to every Senior Member who unofficially “mentors” by encouraging, supporting,
coaching and helping any junior assistants that are assigned as ARs on senior games throughout the
season.
Notwithstanding the overall lower numbers of assessments and mentoring occurrences, I am pleased to
report that we were able to continue to support members in their ongoing development as referees :

New initiatives
We worked co-operatively with the Nepean Referees Group to facilitate the out-of-area assessment that is
required as part of the practical component of the Level 2 refereeing qualification.
By means of a coordinated exchange program, we were able to complete more Level 2 practical
assessments this year than last year, and hope to continue this mutually beneficial initiative in 2016 and
beyond. We are also looking to expand the exchange program with other refereeing associations to
further facilitate the completion of level 2 qualifications for our members.
New Assessors
Congratulations to our members who completed their Level 3 or Level 2 Assessor qualifications in 2015,
and special congratulations to member Richard Baker who achieved the highest Assessor accreditation
possible in Australia, the Level 1 Assessor qualification.
Granville District Football Referees Association – 2015 Member’s Annual Report
Page 37
I hope these members will make themselves regularly available in 2016 to help continue the great trackrecord we have in GDFRA of holding the highest proportionate number of members with advanced
qualifications in the State.
The assistance of new and existing Assessors will be needed to help the many members who have
successfully completed Theory qualifications in 2014 or 2015 and need to complete the practical
component of those qualifications.

Feedback forms
The responses received via our online feedback system gdfra.org.au/feedback , and the older-style paper
feedback forms, remain overwhelmingly positive and confirms the high standard being achieved by our
members.
Please remember the aims of the online feedback system are to:






Encourage more regular feedback from coaches and managers
Secure feedback faster and be able to respond to perceived or real problems more quickly
Pass formal feedback to members more quickly after appointments
Build a database of feedback for future reference
Help identify coaches and managers who give reliable, objective feedback as well as those
who give clearly biased, subjective feedback.
Enable feedback from others – not just coaches and managers
As already mentioned above, feedback received was overwhelmingly positive, with responses at “Good”
or “Very Good” level between 80% and 94% across all categories :

Particularly noteworthy is the climb in the “Very Good” category in Impartiality (Consistency) from 48.5% in
2014 to 58.5% in 2015, in Fitness/Positioning from 45.8% to 55.7%, and in match control from 51.5% in
2014 to 65.1% in 2015.
This is another excellent result and I congratulate all members for the effort put in throughout the year,
especially in the face of significantly reduced membership numbers within the branch. Well done
everyone!
Looking ahead to next year (2016)
I am currently not planning to nominate for the role of Assessment and Mentoring Coordinator after the
end of the 2015 season having completed, and enjoyed, the agreed 2 years in the role.
With the various commitments I have at work (including overseas travel), my other association positions
as Assistant Secretary, and member of the Technical Sub-committee (involving teaching at all the courses
we run throughout the year), and the further involvement I hope to have in helping develop the branch and
our members in 2016 and beyond, I believe the time is right to allow “new blood” to take over carrying the
baton in the Assessment and Mentoring Coordinator role.
I hope the next AMC adds significantly to the overall strength of GDFRA in 2016 and beyond.

REPORT FROM THE SENIOR ORDINARY MEMBER
This year was an extremely challenging year for us all. With the internal changes that impacted heavily on
our association at Christmas time, it was always going to test the character of our members.
It was also an interesting time to serve as Senior Ordinary Member. I hope I have helped those that have
asked for my assistance through the year by listening, advising and actioning when needed.
Our numbers were down and to those who dug in and took on extra games, a big thank you. Those who
represented our Branch at State Cup, Champions of Champions and other events also need a special
mention.
I look forward to working with our members in the future. Remember that when you represent GDFRA,
you should do it proudly and professionally. Your dress, presentation, punctuality, fitness and professional
manner impact on people’s opinion of you long before you blow your whistle to start the game.
Work
hard on achieving these things 100% of the time and the decisions you make on the field will be easier to
sell.
I will sign off with a piece of advice I was given from one of our senior referees – Sometimes the hardest
decisions to make in a game are the correct ones, don’t be afraid to make them when they count.
Dale Bromfield
REPORT FROM THE JUNIOR ORDINARY MEMBER
It was my role this year to serve as the junior ordinary member for the association. This role has been a
challenging one but has come with many benefits. I have seen many juniors progress in their way through
their refereeing careers whether that are through attaining a higher level, or refereeing their first Football
NSW matches.
Personally, I have tried to serve the association in the best way I know possible and hope that I have had
an impact on the junior referees of the association, whether that be through answering emails or through
the multiple topics discussed through the junior meetings.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has made the year so enjoyable. It is without you that the
association wouldn't be what it is today.

REPORT FROM LIAISON OFFICER
Once again I had the honour of being the GDFRA Liaison Officer for my 3rd year. It is a role I enjoy very
much and as noted in the past, I am trying to grow the role beyond just organising the raffle each month.
Last year I said the Easter Raffle was my favourite of the year. Well this year it comes in second, as my
favourite raffle is the AGM Raffle. Very early on in the year I wanted to do something completely different.
I wanted to offer a prize completely unique to our members. Everyone wants signed memorabilia of their
favourite A-league or EPL player or club so I thought as referees, why not try and organise a piece of
refereeing memorabilia. I came up with the idea of a signed A-League Referees Jersey by as many
2015/2016 A-League/W-League panel members as possible. My task then was to organise it, which I
originally thought would be impossible. At first no one knew what I was planning and I only let a handful in
on my plans later on. I emailed FFA Referees Manager Ben Williams and both he and Michael Bailey
were more than happy to assist with my idea. The A-League and W-League Referees had a pre-season
seminar in Canberra in August where a large majority of referees signed the shirt, including our own
Kristian Griffiths-Jones, Katie Patterson, Kelly Jones and Steve Lucas. A huge thanks goes out to both
Ben and Michael for the support and assistance in making this happen for me. Also a big thank you goes
out to Steve Prattent and his team at Elite Sports for donating the cost and organising the shirt to be
framed. A thank you must also go out to the following people for their donations to the raffles throughout
the year: Nick from Big-W, John Kemp and his Wife and Kent Rogers. I think there were a few more
people and I apologise for not remembering who they are but thank you to you all.
Football has become a big part of my life and is one reason why I have wanted to expand the role of
Liaison Officer. In addition to organising the raffles, I book all meeting rooms, technical equipment and
catering when needed but I wanted to continue my role as an unofficial member of the TSC. This year I
again assisted the TSC Chairman (Steve Prattent) and his team with administrative duties in running
courses, helping with the registration of members and fielding any inquires individuals had regarding
becoming a referee. I organised the flyer to advertise the course that then got sent to clubs, schools and
the GDSFA and also presented on ‘Game Day Preparation’ for all our new members at each of the
courses. I also promoted the L3 and L2 upgrades this year. It was good to see the members that did sign
up and complete the course, do well. I will come chasing for you all next year to upgrade. I am very keen
for the GDFRA to continue to grow and provide referees with opportunities to grow their knowledge. I hope
to continue my efforts in 2016.
2015 for me personally as a Referee was not the best year. I currently work in hospitality, which means
mostly weekend work. Although I enjoyed every game I was able to referee and thank Trent Kiner for
those games. I achieved my L3 Theory qualification in a course run by the Nepean Referees Group and
after a bit of convincing I gave a crack at my L2 Theory qualification. I didn’t go so well in my first attempt
but hoping to do much better when I re-sit. I also had the opportunity this year alongside Kent Rogers, to
referee the Rosehill v Holroyd Police Charity Match in mid-September. In 2016 I intend on joining State
League and plan on achieving my L3 Practical, complete the L3 Assessors course and if time permits I
want to achieve my L3 Instructor’s qualification.
On a personal note I would like to say a huge thank you to my mentor Steve Prattent. As I said I didn’t
referee a whole lot this year but when I got the chance, Steve came and supported me. I have a
confidence issue and usually don’t trust my ability as a referee as much as I should. Steve put up with my
silly questions but was always happy to listen. I also had the privilege of refereeing with him on several
occasions where I learnt a lot by just observing his player management skills. Even with my lack of
refereeing this year, I learnt a lot and thank Steve for that. He gave me the confidence boost I needed. I
urge every member but especially juniors and new members to find a mentor, someone they trust and to
help support them throughout the year.
2016 is set to be another busy year for all of us as referees so rest up, enjoy the break, Christmas and the
New Year but remember we are all athletes so look after yourselves because. “Champions aren’t made in
gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside of them – a desire, a dream, and a
vision. They have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger then the skill.” – Muhammad Ali.
