2015–2016 SEASON THE DIVISION OF FINE ARTS AT YOUNG HARRIS COLLEGE OFFERS AN EXCITING LINEUP OF WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES, EVENTS, AND EXHIBITIONS PRESENTED BY THEATRE YOUNG HARRIS, THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC, AND THE CAMPUS GATE ART GALLERY. THE 2015-2016 SEASON SHOWCASES THE CREATIVE EFFORTS AND TALENTS OF YHC STUDENTS, YHC FACULTY, AND DISTINGUISHED GUEST ARTISTS. THEATRE YOUNG HARRIS Each season, YHC’s theatre company presents a full lineup of notable productions, including full-length musicals, innovative dramas, classic plays, children’s shows and more. The Mainstage Season features four marquee-style musicals and plays directed and designed by faculty, professional artists or advanced upperclassmen. The Second Season includes exciting and innovative events like musical revues and cabarets, staged readings, and oneact plays. The Studio Series features productions showcasing student direction and provides an invaluable educational experience that focuses on the fundamentals of the production process. CAMPUS GATE ART GALLERY MUSIC ENSEMBLES YHC Chamber Choir YHC Guitar Ensemble DIRECTOR: JEFFREY BAUMAN DIRECTOR: DR. RICHARD KNEPP This dynamic ensemble’s extensive repertoire ranges from moving works by Renaissance masters to original arrangements of current pop hits. Students perform intricate works for classical guitar during intimate and enthralling concerts that feature solos, duos, trios and quartets. YHC Community Band YHC Jazz Band DIRECTOR: ALAN DENMON DIRECTOR: DR. MIKE CAMPBELL Comprised of high school and adult musicians from the local community, the Community Band performs traditional band classics as well as entertaining “pops” music. This ensemble performs a variety of music covering many styles of the big band genre, including swing, bop, Latin jazz and fusion. YHC Percussion Ensemble YHC Concert Band DIRECTOR: MARY LAND This powerful ensemble gives woodwind, brass and percussion players ample opportunities to perform a wide repertory of wind band literature. DIRECTOR: ERIC BROWN This group performs a variety of solo and ensemble literature written for percussive instruments such as xylophone, marimba, vibes, tympani and more. YHC Piano Ensemble The gallery hosts exhibitions by nationally recognized professional artists, plus the annual Student Juried Art Exhibition and Senior Thesis Exhibition. Each show has an opening reception where guests can meet and mingle with the exhibiting artist. YHC Concert Choir DIRECTOR: JEFFREY BAUMAN The College’s largest musical ensemble hosts a variety of themed concerts throughout the year, often teaming up with fellow ensembles to present unforgettable concerts. DIRECTOR: CYNTHIA DEFOOR Talented students perform works for piano duos, duets, trios, and quartets. Contributions for all performances are accepted to benefit YHC’s student chapter of the Music Teachers National Association. 9/26 8/18-9/25 Cinderella’s Mice From Star Wars to Transformers by Livio Raymondelli Fred Register Endowment for Children’s Theatre Music and Lyrics by Ben Morss Book and Additional Lyrics by Justin Warner Based in Los Angeles, concept artist Livio Ramondelli’s impressive list of credits includes the comic books “Transformers: Autocracy and Monstrosity” and “Transformers: Chaos, Robots in Disguise,” as well as covers for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “G.I. Joe,” and “30 Days of Night.” He often provides art and designs for Google, Hasbro, and Upper Deck, and previously worked for worldrenowned artist Jim Lee at WildStorm/DC Comics. Spencer is a little mouse with big dreams, and he has exciting plans for the royal ball just like his friend Cinderella. His dreams of raiding the buffet at the ball are dashed when the fairy godmother turns Spencer and his sister into horses. How will Spencer sneak into the ball now? How will his crazy improvisations make or break Cinderella’s big night with the Prince? This frivolous take on a time-honored fairy tale shows even the smallest characters can make a big difference. 9/28-29 The Mikado Fall 2014 Sylvia By A.R. Gurney This award-winning play tells the story of a dog named Sylvia, the couple who adopts her and the resulting comedy. Based in New York City in the 1990s, audiences receive an inside look into the romantic triangle that is the result of one man’s mid-life crisis. 9/29-10/30 Suriya by Jim Neel Jim Neel’s sculpture, drawings and photography have appeared in regional and national exhibitions as well as academic galleries. Working as a freelance photojournalist covering the wars in Central America and life and death among the Serpent Handling Holiness of Appalachia, his work has appeared nationally and internationally in more than thirty newspapers, magazines and hard-cover publications. He currently serves as associate professor of art at Birmingham-Southern College and director of The Durbin Gallery. YHC Community Band 10/24 Kaleidoscope Concert Members of the talented Department of Music, anchored by the Concert Choir, celebrate the College’s Family Weekend with an entertaining program that’s sure to appeal to audiences of all ages. Student vocalists and instrumentalists shine while sharing their love of music making during this delightful concert. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream. 11/12 New Music Festival Join YHC’s Concert Band for an exciting evening of contemporary classical music featuring works by award-winning composers Samuel Hazo and Daniel Perttu, including the premiere of Perttu’s “Callanish,” a work for clarinet and wind band commissioned by YHC Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Leigh Miller. 11/20 Guest Artist Concert: Brandon Hood, ’05 Blairsville native and YHC alumnus Brandon Hood, ’05, is a popular Nashville songwriter who has worked with some of country music’s most successful artists. Hood will perform his own compositions in addition to crowd favorites during the College’s annual Homecoming. The enchanting evening of seasonal selections will feature the traditional “Hallelujah Chorus,” an uplifting rendition of “O Holy Night” and a magical holiday surprise that’s not to be missed. 12/1 -11 48: The Christmas Cards of Dale Cochran In 1964, Cochran began to create Christmas cards silk-screened with a homemade screen. In 1969, he brought the new technique of cut-paper designs to his cards, with the first featuring a bird motif which would become the subject for all of his future cards. The former YHC adjunct professor of of art’s inspiration comes from many sources including photographs, the printed word, observation and original concepts. His paintings of native wildflowers and bird hang in collections across the United States and Europe. 12/4 & 6 The Sounds of Christmas YHC’s Community Band and the Mountain Community Chorus join forces in this special Christmas program. Celebrate the season with this concert showcasing the collaborative spirit among local musicians, the College and the community. Plan for an Undoing by Douglas Miller Join senior theatre major Melissa Tillery, of Blue Ridge, as she presents a special staged reading of her original play, How Are We Today? Acclaimed Kentucky mixed media artist Douglas Miller produces breathtaking masterworks that explore the inner personality of his beautifully rendered subjects. His works appear in numerous public and private exhibits and collections across the United States. Talented students will perform a variety of short musical and dramatic bits related to the themes of love and heartbreak. 2/24-27 9 to 5: The Musical Music and Lyrics by Dolly Parton Book by Patricia Resnick Based on the hit movie from 1980, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is an outrageous story of three unlikely friends who take control of their office and learn there is nothing they cannot do—even in a man’s world. Nicole Drake, ’15, 2014 “Best of Show” Recipient 3/18 Guest Artist Concert: The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet This Grammy-award winning guitar ensemble known for using nylon string guitars to imitate a variety of instruments is one of the most multifaceted groups in any music genre. Comprised of four uniquely accomplished musicians bringing new energy to the concert stage with programs ranging from Bluegrass to Bach, the quartet’s critically acclaimed transcriptions of concert masterworks provide a fresh look at the music of the past, while their interpretations of works from the contemporary and world-music realms continually break new ground. 3/31 Guest Artist Concert: 9 String Theory Domra virtuoso Angelina Galashenkova-Reed and awardwinning classical guitarist John Huston join forces to create the unique musical collaboration known as 9 String Theory. This gifted group will showcase a diverse body of work, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and many other mediums. 4/8-9 Acapalooza Back by popular demand, this audience favorite features a cappella pop song arrangements by YHC faculty and students. The all-male ensemble Compulsive Lyres and all-female group Southern Harmony join forces as the Chamber Choir for a show that’s not to be missed. 4/9-10 4/19-23 By Annie Baker By Agatha Christie This comedic drama with music about friendship, art, love and death features two angry young men behind a Vermont coffee shop. While discussing music and Bukowski, a lonely high-school student arrives on the scene, and they decide to teach him everything they know. The world’s longest running play by the foremost mystery writer of her time, this classic thriller celebrating its 60th anniversary, follows a group of strangers stranded in a boarding house during a snow storm—one of whom is a murderer. One by one, the suspicious characters reveal their sordid pasts until the last, nerveshredding moment when the killer’s identity and motive are finally revealed in an exciting plot twist.
