One interesting thing about this is that students made the whole play by themselves: decorations, stage, costumes, lightsstudents designed all of it and made it real. “I liked the play a lot, but I didn’t like the stage setting,” said Haley Whetstine. Most of the actors and staff were juniors and seniors, but there were some talented freshmen too. “It was very interesting, but the costumes were a little weird. It was not what I expected about Shakespeare’s work,” said junior Hanna King. After the play the students went to Oak Park Mall where they were able to eat and shop a little. by Baileigh Jenkins Left: The drama club watches the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Goppert Theatre at Avila University. They came home with a total of two out of a possible five games, beating Doniphan West and Horton and losing to Members of the team are Shane Miller, Russell Ostertag, William Boeh, Elizabeth Hale, Dillon Simpson, Skyler Sherman, Derek Holman, Trae Shelton, Braden Hansen, Ashley Stock, and sponsor Mrs. Stephanie Affield. Scholars Bowl is a pro- gram for students who wish to compete against other schools, quizzing about multiple high school subjects.. It is a question-and-answer contest between two teams, each of which has no more than five players. Each round consists of two 5-minute halves and a 1-minute halftime. Substitutions may be made only at halftime. A team’s roster may be changed between rounds. Competition is by single elimination. Multimedia class wins camera by Baileigh Jenkins and Jessica Guffy THS multimedia classes recently won a Sony Handicam for the classroom for their video submissions to Rainbowtel channel 68. Rainbowtel communications staff brought the camera by and pre- 2 sented it to Mrs. Jenet Brown and multimedia students Kendra Lysaght, Tyler Teague, Millie King, and Jesse Adkins. “It was just basically a contest for submitting videos. We send our video to the local TV station and won the drawing part,” said Mrs. Brown. Juniors take ASVAB test The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test was taken by all the juniors Wednesday, November 30. The testing was given at no cost to the school. This test helps students learn about themselves and what they want to do after high school, according to their interests. The ASVAB is over general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematics, electronics information, auto and shop information, and mechanical comprehension. This test does not affect a student’s grades in school; no one can pass or fail. After they receive results, a representative comes and talks to them about their results. When the testing is over they can explore over 400 occupations at www.asvabprogram. Left: Mrs. Brown and her multemidia students show their prize. Photo by Rainbowtell staff. News Trojan Trumpet December 2011 THS/TMS Band to go to Alamo Bowl by Courtney Klaus December 26 the Troy High / Middle School Band under the direction of Mr. Matt Allison will be participating in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. The trip will last five days. The band will be departing for San Antonio at 1:30 a.m. That is an estimated drive time of 17 hours including 4 hours for any stops along the way. They should arrive at the hotel at approximately 7:30 p.m. There are 37 band mem- bers and 5 chaperones going on the trip. Each individual had to come up with about $680 each, plus food money. Food money includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When they arrive in San Antonio, they will have to rest up for the week ahead of them. They will be playing in the “Battle of the Bands” and the bowl game. For the halftime show of the Alamo Bowl, the band will be playing two songs, “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough” by Dianna Ross & the Supremes and “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The band had to do multiple fundraisers to make this possible. These included Celebrating Home, Feast of Carols, volleyball tournaments, biscuits and gravy feed/silent auction, Red Wheel, etc. With all of these fundraisers they were able to make the money they needed. Photo by Courtney Klaus Groups have activities for the holidays by Jessica Guffy, Courtney Klaus, Baileigh Jenkins During the month of December, many groups have activities underway. Kayettes This year’s Kayettes participated in many Christmas-related activities. They decorated the gazebo by putting up the Christmas tree and decorating it for when Santa Claus comes to visit, then they help take it down. They participated in Secret Santa, where each member draws names for whom they will purchase a gift and they Adopt-A-Family, which helps families who are in crisis enjoy a special holiday. This is a hands-on project to select a family to help. Courtney Klaus, Baileigh Jenkins, Jessica Guffy, Jessica Burton, Claire Marriott and Kallie Koehler all helped the communitity present gifts for the ones in need. Kayettes also designed Christmas ornaments to place on the trophy case in the high school by the office. “I think Kayettes is good this year because we’re getting more involved in the community,” said senior Haley Whetstine. Student Council The student council hosted a Thanksgiv- ing dinner at the high school and grade school Friday, November 18.The meal consisted of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, wheat rolls, pumpkin pie, and chocolate pudding. National Honors Society December 8 the National Honor Society members held the annual blood drive. The blood drive is for those who were victims in the Joplin tornado, those who were affected by the recent flooding, and others in need. FBLA The FBLA collected pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City. The contest started at the beginning of October and ended December 9. The juniors won, earning them a pizza party. Finally, in November the movie was released. Everybody including grade schoolers, teenagers and adults were all talking about this movie. Why was Breaking Dawn such a big success? Honestly, after reading all the Twilight Saga books, I thought the movie couldn’t surprise me anymore. I thought that it would not be so interesting if I already knew what will be going on, but I was mistaken. The movie was really great, and even those who are not Twilight fans liked it too. However, it received mostly negative reviews from critics. Part 1, rated PG-13, was released November 18, 2011, and Part 2 will be released November 16, 2012. As of November 27, the movie had grossed $488,832,009 worldwide. 4 Wyck Godfrey and Karen Rosenfelt served as executive producers for the film, along with the author of the series, Stephenie Meyer; the screenplay was written by Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter of the first three entries. Three main cast members were Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, of course. In Part 1, Bella and Edward finally get married and go on the real honeymoon on a private island in Brazil. Two weeks later, Bella discovers that she is pregnant and the baby grows too fast. Everybody but Bella wants to kill that half human, half vampire, because it destroys her from the inside. She refuses to have an abortion, so now nobody knows what their future will be like. Moreover, because of Bella’s pregnancy, the wolf pack splits into two. I liked this movie much more than the previous ones. The good thing about it is that Kristen Stewart finally showed more emotion in the movie and looked more alive, not like in the previous movies, where she looked numb most of the time. Also, I liked her outfit in this part more. Robert Pattinson didn’t change much, but Taylor Lautner looked more mature this time. What I didn’t like, is that there were a lot of nasty parts. For example, they show her body and we can see her bones, because she looks anorexic, or the part where she is having a baby, there was too much blood shown. The great thing is that they didn’t change the original story and did everything exactly like in the book. However, they split up this movie in to two parts, and now many people don’t like that they have to wait until next November to see the second part. I think it made the film more interesting and they actually finished the first part at a very logical moment. Now those who didn’t read the book have something to think about. I can also say that obviously in the cinema there were mostly girls, because boys don’t really like vampire love stories. Anyway, despite all negative criticism, Breaking Dawn is very popular, and I would recommend it. We don’t even have time to look around and notice something outside our “box.” As the first snow falls and the Christmas tree is set up, Christmas spirit comes to town. Everybody becomes unexplainably happy and nice, and the radio plays Christmas songs. This moment you understand that Christmas is near. Holiday mood, white snow, happy people and smiling faces make you feel like something fabulous is going on. Every grown-up has a little child sleeping inside of him, and during Christmas this child wakes up. Do you remember yourself watching snow- flakes falling down at least one time during the winter? Sliding from hills and playing snowballs like kids? Don’t you feel something magical while decorating the Christmas tree? We are still kids at heart, and even after realizing in grade school that not all the magic is real, a small part of us still believes that magic may exist. It sounds crazy, but let yourself have fun. Don’t worry about being “cool” and serious. You will always have time for it. Right now it is your time to enjoy Christmas with your family and friends. Do crazy and childish things; laugh and have a lot of happy moments. This is your Christmas; spend it the way you will remember it your whole life. Christmas is very important for me. It is the time when I don’t worry about anything at all. I just spend my time the way I want, when I chill out with my friends at the town square, take pictures near the huge Christmas tree, and then warm myself with tea in the cafeteria. It is my time for long talks, lots of laughs, surprises, presents, and freedom. Last winter was the best winter in my life. I wish I could make it this year too, but I cannot. I’m too far away from home and friends, from everything I’m used to. But you guys are here, at your home. Enjoy it; make it unforgettable. You will miss this time; trust me. Christmas is the time for happiness and miracles. Don’t think that your life is too miserable and nothing good will ever happen to you. On Christmas wonders happen. I don’t mean that suddenly your life will just become perfect, but, who knows, maybe on Christmas you will fall in love with someone and live happily ever after, or your old friend whom you haven’t seen for ages calls you to wish you Merry Christmas. The point is that we can do miracles by ourselves; we don’t need Santa Claus to do them for us. Start with small things; smile more and say good things to people; maybe it can make someone’s day better. Maybe even a visit to your grandma will be a Christmas gift for her. Look around; everything is wonderful: White shining snow, which reflects sunshine; the breath of winter; the sound of the crunchy snow. Doesn’t it make you feel like holiday is near? Doesn’t it make you smile, at least for a second? It’s our Christmas, and only we can make it happy. So don’t waste it; just believe in it. He Says She Says “ A t-shirt to make him look like he belongs with me,” said senior Kendra Lysaght. “Probably some jewelry, chocolate, or roses,” said sophomore Daulton Jasper. “Looking ahead to Christmas, what gift would you recommend for a significant other?” “Definitely a bouquet of roses,” said freshman Braden Grossman. “Probably a t-shirt or hoodie of his favorite band, and some new shoes,” said junior Olivia Robinson. 5 Editorial December 2011 Trojan Trumpet Giving at Christmas feels good by Tanner Weishaar Do you like receiving gifts at Christmas time? It is always fun to get gifts at Christmas, but do we only think of ourselves? Christmas is not only a time to be thankful, but also a time to give. When your mom askes you to make your Christmas list, but you can’t really come up with anything particular you want, is that saying something? Is it maybe suggesting you have everything? These are the moments that we should stop and think about the children who don’t receive any presents during the Christmas holiday. Many churches participate in multiple activities to help get presents for children all around the world. This includes shoe box gifts, Adopt-aFamily, and Angel tags. The shoe box gifts include picking either a girl or a boy to buy a gift for. There are also different age groups that you can choose from. You buy the child a gift for Christmas and then send it to them. I’m sure the kids are thrilled to get them, because they never get anything extra to play with. You can also adopt a family during Christmas. This includes buying supplies that they may need and also buying the kids toys. Many children all over the world wake up on Christmas morning and find no presents to open. How do you think the child would feel? Did Santa not come see me? We can easily change all of this. Instead of buying so many presents for ourselves, give to the children who truly need them. The fact of giving to little kids all over the world just makes my heart melt. Next time you are out buying gifts pick up something extra and make a child’s Christmas special. The Gift of Giving Roving Reporter What is your favorite Christmas memory? “Waking up and seeing presents under the tree,” said freshman Derek Franken. “In 2008 when my brother and his wife told me they were expecting a baby boy,” said sophomore Kallie Koehler. 6 “In 1946, before bed my brother and I peeked through a hole in the floor and we saw Santa put plastic airplanes in our stockings; the next morning we got rocks from our parents for peeking,” said Mr. V. “When none of my family members were absent for Christmas,” said senior Ashley Burton. “Whenever my family and I go to my grandma’s,” said junior Jeff Weatherford. Photos by Dalton Masters Feet-suspended push up This is a great workout for getting a defined chest, and strengthening your shoulders and triceps. It is a workout anyone can do; all you need is your body and a place to stick your feet. If you want to get extreme you can change the elevation of your feet. When it gets too easy, go for the dive bomber and get almost vertical. This workout has one key flaw that everyone makes and that is they stick their feet too far back on the bench and don’t keep on their toes. Instead they put their feet flat on a bench making it easier. Make sure to keep on your toes and to stay at the edge of the bench. 8 Blue Word Search qvnpffhwznvbdxgdbewngkuhw ewabsajzmoputzqyxnhxywmfg familyandfreindsuuognvqqz rpjdnodgbgceertsamtsirhcz g r e e t i n g c a r d s n o i t arocedjl bmzpmistletoenamwonsyhlab oplvprkpewascmscpdcgfsosm uqvpgredmyedaruiyoykecnoz hxomprncarolingemdlyilpal nhvyiizspejnyhtvjfnkfnftq scbfezzixdqcsqpaesfanngqw sxqrkocexbxdxozkdbmicigsn angel candycane caroling snowman presents decorations christmastree fireplace greetingcards stockings noschool mistletoe familyandfriends shopping reindeer toys santa sleigh snow coal Feature Trojan Trumpet December 2011 You’ve Been Spotted Top Row: Reece Simpson goes for the jump ball Tuesday night against Maur Hill-Mount Acadamy as Dylan Norris and Alex Schmille are ready in position for the ball.
