In 2012, the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba was proud to
distribute over $151,000 to 79 education award recipients!
Mark & Dorothy Danzker Scholarship
Melina Zylberman is this year’s Danzker Scholarship recipient
Melina is entering her third year at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Medicine. “Medicine
does not simply teach you the scientific facts and statistics,” says Melina. “It teaches you the
importance of family and friends, questions your priorities, and perfects your ability to multi-task
and triage not just patients, but your own life.”

Awarded to a Jewish student entering or enrolled in a post-graduate degree program
with preference given to persons studying at a Manitoba educational institution. This award
is based on academic achievement, financial need and community involvement.

JOEL A. WEINSTEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
NATAN CRAMER IS THIS YEAR’S WEINSTEIN SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Natan is a third-year medical student at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, with the
goal of becoming an emergency medicine doctor. “I want to be that person who is able to fix or
identify any variation of a clinical emergency that a layperson would not be able to,” says Natan.
“Aside from the emotional fulfillment, emergency medicine offers a wide range of variation and
complex problems that are able to quench the theoretical thirst.”

Awarded to a Jewish student who is attending a university, college or post-graduate program at an
educational institution in Israel and who has a strong commitment to the community and volunteerism.
This award is based on academic achievement and community involvement both locally and in Israel.
MONA GRAY CREATIVE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP
MICHAEL DUDECK IS THIS YEAR’S MONA GRAY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
Michael is entering the “Special Individualized Program” (Master of Arts) at Concordia University.
Michael says that he has always been fascinated with art and religion. His work“…involves the
invention of a prehistory and religious mythology, and the presentation of this invented mythos
through the use of the Natural History Museum aesthetic. This involves the creation of life-size
sculptural dioramas, artifact displays, timelines, and interactive digital technologies which present
this invented mythos as fact.”

Awarded to a Bachelors Degree graduate of a Manitoba university who is pursuing graduate studies in
one of the following areas: creative writing, film, fine arts, music, theatre, dance, or photography. This
award is based on artistic merit, financial need, community involvement and academic achievement.
SAUL & CLARIBEL SIMKIN CENTRE FAMILY EDUCATION AWARD
JILLIAN MCGAVIN IS THIS YEAR’S SIMKIN CENTRE AWARD RECIPIENT
Jillian is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the Asper School of Business. Her ultimate goal
is to earn her Chartered Accountant designation. One of Jill’s references noted: “Amazingly, Jill’s
educational skills are equalled by her many other fine qualities. Jill is a hard-working young person …
(and she) possesses so many wonderful characteristics, but it is her dedication to friends and family
and her kind personality that make her truly exceptional.”

Founder of the award
Friends of the Saul & Claribel Simkin Centre established this award to help
children/dependents of long-service employees pursue post-secondary education.
The award is based on financial need, academic achievement and community involvement.

GROSBERG FAMILY JUDAIC STUDIES/HEBREW EDUCATORS’ AWARD
This award is given annually to a Judaic Studies/Hebrew educator for study that leads to enhancing the
Judaic Studies/Hebrew curriculum of the educational institution or the instructional/administrative practice
of the applicant for the benefit of the Jewish community of Winnipeg. (Not awarded in 2012.)

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Former JFM EDUCATION AWARD winner stars on air, at pulpit
Winnipeg rolls out the welcome “Matt” for rising radio star
Torah trope or traffic reports, brachas or Blue Bombers – chances are you’ve heard the vocal stylings of
Matthew/Matt Leibl, 2007 winner of the JFM’s Ruth & Joe Freed and Stephen Freed and Family Academic
Excellence Award.
As “Matthew,” the 27-year-old son of Ellen and Stewart Leibl is a popular Torah reader and bar/bat mitzvah
instructor at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. As “Matt,” the journalism graduate of King’s College in Halifax
produces “The Big Show” on TSN 1290 Radio. Whether Matthew or Matt, you can always call him a proud
Winnipegger thrilled to work in his chosen field while contributing to Jewish life in Winnipeg.
“I pinch myself sometimes,” says Leibl. “I feel very fortunate.”
Leibl started working at Shaarey Zedek in 2004 after graduating from Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate in 2003.
While studying at the University of Manitoba, he taught dozens of young Winnipeggers how to read Torah.
After U of M, Leibl took a year off as he prepared for his journalism studies. During that year, he hosted the
Winnipeg Jewish Radio Hour, performed regular concerts at the Sharon Home, and continued to work at
Shaarey Zedek.
One day, while reading a JFM newsletter, he learned about the Freed Award. He applied and won. The
prize helped take some of the financial pressure off of going to school in Halifax. More important for Leibl,
it was a positive message that this community is prepared to celebrate its young people.

“I’m grateful that the Foundation invested in me,” he says.
Leibl started working at SportsRadio 1290 in 2010 even before it became part of TSN. Today, “The Big Show” airs weekdays 6:00–10:00 a.m.
As producer, Leibl’s workday begins at 4:00 a.m. He goes on air with updates, and, increasingly, for banter with the co-hosts. When the show’s over,
he goes home to sleep, catches a game on TV, teaches maftir, watches more sports, sleeps more, and then does it all over again.
“It’s a crazy schedule,” he says. “But for now, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
