CHORUS DIRECTOR “BRIEF”
BIO
Dr. Karen Miyamoto (Ph.D. in
Music) is the Music Director at
Makalapa Elementary School.
This is her 2nd year teaching
Music at Makalapa Elementary
School. She has been a Music
Resource Teacher with the
Hawaii Department of
Education since 1986.

• Dr. Miyamoto’s choirs have won Gold Awards at
National Music Festivals in Hawaii and in
California. Her choirs have appeared at the
American Choral Directors Association Western
Division Conference, the Governor’s Mansion for
Children and Youth Day, the prestigious
Anaheim Children’s Choir Festival, at the Crystal
Cathedral in Anaheim, California, and at the
Hawaii Youth Opera “E Mele Kakou” Choral
Festivals.

• Most recently her choir was recorded by
the U.S. State Department singing
Children’s Folk Songs on a CD distributed
around the world to teach students to
speak English. She was the recipient of
the Hawaii Music Awards “Music Educator
of the Year” Award in 2002.

• Dr. Miyamoto has served as Adjunct
Professor of Music at the University of
Hawaii at Manoa Music Department and
has hosted and been the instructor of the
Hawaii Department of Education Distance
Learning Program “The Music Factory
Live” for 15 years which broadcast on PBS
Hawaii.

• Dr. Miyamoto has also been an instructor
for the Hawaii Youth Symphony and
Clinician for the Hawaii Youth Symphony’s
Pacific Music Institute. She served as
Adjunct Professor of Music at the Pacific
Rim Bible College in Hawaii.

Why Study Music?
•
Success in School: Students with coursework in music
performance and music appreciation scored higher on
the SAT: 53 points higher on the verbal and 39 points
higher on the math for music performance, and 61
points higher on the verbal and 42 points higher on the
math for music appreciation than students with no arts
participation.
Success in Developing Intelligence: A research
team exploring the link between music and intelligence
reported that music training is far superior to computer
instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract
reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math
and science.

identifies the arts as one of the six basic
academic subject areas students should study in
order to succeed in college.
Success in Life: Music is about
communication, creativity, and cooperation, and,
by studying music in school, students have the

PROCEDURES & INFORMATION
• The Grade 3-6 chorus Meets afterschool on Thursdays from 12:30•

1:00 P.M.
A+ students should check in to A+ first and then go to the
rehearsal, and then go back to A+ after the rehearsal.
All students must sign out after the rehearsal and be picked up
within 15 minutes after the conclusion of the rehearsal.
Students who remain on campus for longer than 15 minutes 3X will
be dismissed from the program.
For accountability, Grade 3-6 students must bring in an excuse
note/email/phone call from parents/legal guardians for each
absence.
Students waiting for parents to be picked up should wait on the wall
outside of the Music Room and not at the bus shelter, or in front of
the Administration Building, where there is no adult supervision.
GRADE 1 & 2 CHORUS
STUDENTS
• Grade 1 & 2 Chorus students meet during the school day with the

entire grade level attending and practicing.
Selected students have been auditioned and qualify to participate in
the performing chorus.
The selected students purchase the uniform and pay the $25
materials fee.
The selected students will perform along with the Grade 3-6 and
Grade 2 Chorus students at various events.
Grade 1 & 2 students need not worry about signing out, being
picked up within 15 minutes after the conclusion of the rehearsal, or
going to and from A+.

Performance is not automatic.
Students must attend all rehearsals.
Poor attendance = Nonperformance.
Students must put forth the effort.
Exemplary behavior is expected at all rehearsals and
performances. Students who are not behaving in class
or on stage at the performance will not perform.
Students are ambassadors of the school.
Rehearsals are important and mandatory. (It is not
uncommon to see students miss weeks of rehearsal and
then suddenly appear at the rehearsal prior to the
performance and expect to perform. Please attend
rehearsals consistently!)
MEDIA RELEASE FORMS
• Each performance is video taped and distributed

to families for a nominal at-cost fee.
Pictures of Performances may also be used for
publicity, news articles, etc. for educational
purposes.
Students without a signed Hawaii Department of
Education Media Release Form sent out by the
school will need to be set apart from the video
taping or pictures.
Please let us know if your child cannot be video
taped or have pictures taken.
NEWSLETTERS
• Newsletters are sent home periodically.
• Check to see that your child is bringing
them home.
• Newsletters are also emailed to each
family. Please be sure the school has the
current email address on file.
THE UNIFORM
• Sizing—try sample sizes on.
• Boys wear the Red Aloha Shirt and long, black dress pants. The

shirt is worn untucked.
Ladies Muumuu—measure shoulder to floor for length. Only the top
half is available to try on.
Girls may purchase the Red Aloha Shirt or Red Aloha Muumuu. The
muumuu is highly recommended for Chorus members.
Black, long, dress pants is required to go with the Red Aloha Shirt.
No jeans. The pants must be purchased on your own.
Polyester/spandex dress pants is o.k. for girls.
Black, covered dress shoes is required. No sports shoes. The shoes
must be purchased on your own.
Black, calf-length socks is required. No White Socks or Stockings.
Turn in all uniform orders and payments by 9/28/12.

Students (Grades 1-6) during the Fall
Intersession on Thursday, October 4 from 8:0011:00 A.M. This will be an opportunity for all
students in all grades to rehearse together as a
group.

• Leeward Community College Christmas Concert—Parent Chaperones
(Help pass out and collect leis, hairpieces, line up students, assist
students going on and off the stage. Student check out.) &
Hospitality (Donate snacks and/or help make goody bags/snacks for
students.)
• Ala Moana Center Stage—Parent Chaperones (Help pass out and
collect leis, hairpieces, line up students, assist students going on
and off the stage. Student check out.) & Stage Box Helpers (Pick
up, bring, and return the next school day, one, two or a few stage
boxes to the performance site.)
• Will schedule a volunteer meeting in November.
