Report to the Community - United Way of Thunder Bay
2015 Report to the Community W W W . U W A Y T B A Y. C A Message from the President In my new position as President of the United Way of Thunder Bay, I am pleased to work with a committed Board of Directors. Thank you to the 29 Board Members who volunteer their time and their talents to lead the organization. In 2015 United Way of Canada, and the respective members, joined the United Way Worldwide. This allows each local United Way to have greater opportunities for professional development, resource management, sharing of best practices, and stronger alignment with international donors. As well, United Ways across Canada are transitioning to expand our efforts to create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities. Our fundraising arm continues to support registered local charitable organizations and our expanding investments in community projects and community collaborations. We continue to leverage grants to support our community projects. The 2015 Campaign proved to be very challenging. Thanks to the Campaign Chair, Jim Madder, and the dedicated Campaign Team volunteers. Together, they achieved a remarkable result of $2,654,870. We would also like to thank the media for their ongoing support in getting our message heard. Most importantly, we applaud all donors for your compassion and concern for those in need in our community, demonstrated by your generous support. Thank you. “ United Ways across Canada are transitioning to expand our efforts to create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our communities Under the leadership of Tom Boyle, Chair of our United Way Allocations Committee, thirty-six volunteers conducted the annual review of applications from local service agencies for funding through our Community Fund, and brought forward recommendations to be approved by the United Way Board of Directors. I thank them for all their time given to ensure these proceeds of our fundraising campaign are distributed effectively. In 2015, the United Way of Thunder Bay continued to work as the lead organization for Thunder Bay Counts, one of our current community projects. Over 50 community partners have worked to develop a framework to track progress in addressing pressing social issues. They have also developed indicators that will help measure these changes over time. United Way of Thunder Bay is an early adopter of this work and will be able to provide best practices for other United Ways. Grants over two years were received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the development phase of this initiative, and I thank them for the financial support that has made this project feasible. This work has included extensive research and community consultation. PROGRAMS NUMBER OF PEOPLE HELPED Some of these collaborations have included the RFDA, Action for Neighbourhood Change - Evergreen: A United Neighbourhood, and 211. “ The core purpose of the Shared Agenda is to enable collaborative planning by developing a shared understanding of issues and making information about these issues widely available. When different groups working on specific aspects of a complex social issue come to see their efforts as connected to a single, shared agenda for change, the potential exists for collective impact. To learn more about Thunder Bay Counts and the Shared Agenda go to www.thunderbaycounts.com Thunder Bay Counts is led by a Round Table which includes more than 50 members, representing government, funders, business, health, social services, First Nations, and other key sectors. The day-to-day work of the initiative is managed by United Way of Thunder Bay, along with their collaborative partner, the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre, and a small steering committee. Taylor Newberry Consulting has been the research lead for the initiative. Thunder Bay Counts has convened a number of working groups, including a table of local strategy leads, a network of local funders, and a data sharing table. This development phase has been funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. I am so impressed with how our community came together during this year’s campaign to raise $2,654,870 in support of United Way and its efforts to create a better life for everyone in our community. One of the ways to make our community better is by supporting 30 funded agencies which provide 64 diverse human service programs. Our collective efforts will make it possible for thousands of our friends and neighbours to access critical help in times of need. Whether providing food, creating safer neighbourhoods, offering companionship, or building skills and delivering counselling, guidance and support, United Way is in the forefront providing solutions, making the impossible possible. In 2015, the Leaders of the Way entry level was increased, nationally, to $1200. The “Step Up” program, offered in Thunder Bay, was an incentive to encourage and support Leaders donors with this transition. One of our Corporate Leaders, Bombardier Transportation, with support from the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation, proudly sponsored this program with a commitment of $20,000. Engaging our younger demographic is both a challenge and an opportunity for the United Way campaign. Our GenNext Cabinet continues to make this a priority. I believe we will be able to reach new heights with the campaign if we can encourage more participation from our youth. “ Jim Madder Campaign Chair Emilio Rigato Corporate Leaders Co-Chair Shirley Rigato Leaders Of The Way Division Mary McLellan Campaign Vice-Chair & Special Events Division Kelly Gallagher Federal Government Co-Chair Carol Pollard Municipal Division Heidi Strobl Federal Government Co-Chair Frank Jollimore Not-For-Profit Division Of course, all of this could not have been accomplished without the help of many, very dedicated people. We thank them for their compassion towards others in our community during their own time of sorrow. The United Way’s GenNext Cabinet is Thunder Bay’s leading organization for Millennials who are dedicated to making our community stronger in awesome ways. We are all about engaging the 18-40 year old demographic, and inspiring the next generation of donors, volunteers, and community supporters. Our GenNext Cabinet aims to provide opportunity to GenNexters to get involved and made a difference in our community! www.uwaytbay.ca “ We’re providing them with the opportunity to actively make a difference in the community they live, work and play in. GenNext is involved with meaningful volunteer and networking opportunities. Cabinet and committee members are provided with ample opportunity to develop new skills, make valuable community connections, and positively impact the annual United Way Campaign. In 2015 they made a big impact in our community through events such as 8th Annual GenNext Dodgeball Tournament presented by Sun Life Financial in March; the 4th Annual Day of Caring presented by Bombardier in June; and the 12th Annual Ischkinakker Shaker in December. Through all of this, they were able to provide over $50,000 in funding to the community, as well as engage over 400 volunteers with not only United Way of Thunder Bay, but many other local causes and initiatives! “GenNext, as a group, has such a multi-faceted role in our community. Ultimately we’re here to provide other Millennials with opportunity to realize the benefits of being involved in community organizations. Intrinsically, we help by building skill sets and networking opportunities through volunteering, as well as introducing new donors to tax benefits of donating. On a more extrinsic level, we’re providing them with the opportunity to actively make a difference in the community they live, work and play in.” IN MEMORY OF: Dale Anderson Georgette Baxter Jeanette Heroux George “Ted” Pollock Louis Gallagher Fraser Dougall Elizabeth Stokaluk Luke Sobolta - Keith Anderson, GenNext Cabinet Chair 2015 GenNext Cabinet Members Keith Anderson – Chair Dane Hatton Brittany Banks Jennifer McKeown Brittany Chrusz Nick Purich Colleen Peters Tyson Neill The Tomorrow Fund ™ United Way of Thunder Bay's Endowment Fund The Tomorrow Fund is the United Way of Thunder Bay’s endowment fund.
