DARE TO COMPARE!!!!
Do the machines at the top of this page look familiar? Of course they do!
That’s because some companies are still selling these old 1980s designs
as their “top of the line” models today! As you follow the evolution of
our 3-in-1 machines, you can easily see that we constantly improve the
design. Our design improvements have always been directly based
on our customers’ input. Don’t get stuck with 1980s technology!

Hi, I’m John Taylor, President of
ShopmaSter. Here it is, already 2013!
We are celebrating our 32ND year in
the business by introducing the
ShopmaSter patriot VFD machine. As
you read through our new catalog, I
am sure you will be amazed at what
we offer the home machinist, the small business and the
educational institution. Things have certainly changed a lot
since we first introduced our 3-in-1 concept machine to the
marketplace so many years ago. What was once unheard
of, except at our company, has become the standard in the
worldwide industrial marketplace. While researching, you
may have seen other companies that sell various models and
several different sizes of virtually the same machine - one
question you should ask is: “If their machine is so versatile,
why do they need to sell 6 different models?” Only Shopmaster
has maintained the original concept of ONE multi-function
machine that can be used for countless applications that
would normally require 5 or 6 different pieces of machinery.
The Shopmaster still maintains the versatility that allows anyone from novice to professional to have a fully functional,
yet compact machine shop.
WHERE ARE
SHOPMASTERS MADE?
You may be surprised to find out that all 3-in-1 machines are made overseas, particularly in Asia. Our Shopmaster machines are and always have been designed by us, and assembled in a factory we established in mainland China in 1986.
Our factory is Shopmaster exclusive, and builds only our machines and accessories to our stringent specifications. In 2006 we increased our factory size and CNC production capabilities to further enhance our machines. Shopmaster has the exclusive small to midsize CNC machine export designation from China. What that means is that Shopmaster
is the only company to sell a small to midsize 3-in-1 machine which comes CNC ready from the factory. Prior to 1986, our
machines were produced in the more common Chinese state-run factories. This type of factory has no product exclusivity and manufactures products for many companies. As our designs evolved with the industry, we needed to play a more
active part in every aspect of the production of our machines. A few of the items we were concerned with improving upon
were: quality control and inspection, raw materials quality and cost, and design integrity. Overall, we needed the factory
to meet our precise specifications instead of altering our product to correspond to pre-set factory specifications meant
for cheap mass production. The only way that this was possible was to establish our own factory. Being able to actively
control production decisions, we are able to continuously improve our designs,
allowing us to keep up with today’s technology and our customers’ demands. You may see different versions of our
older style machines for sale on the market, even today. Take a look at page 2, and see how many you recognize! You will
never see a Shopmaster product anywhere but here.

WHAT IF I’M NOT SURE, DO YOU OFFER ANY TRIAL PERIOD?
Shopmaster has always been the only company to “screen” its potential buyers. Our focus is not to sell a new
machine to every customer who dials our toll free number. We take time to discuss your projects. If we feel that
our machine is too large or too small or just not the right style, we will actually offer advice on some of the other
products on the market that may better suit your needs. If, however, we both decide that a Shopmaster Patriot is
the machine for you, we’d like you to have plenty of time to really get in there and try out some of your work. We
have always offered our ONE YEAR TRIAL PERIOD, a full 12 months from the time you receive your machine,
not from the day you place your order (like some other companies). Why so long? We have been in business for
30 years and have learned that some of our customers have only a few hours each week to use their machines.
Other customers may be beginners and need some time to develop their skills. Every customer will experience at
least a slight learning-curve, as it goes with any new piece of equipment. Those “30 Day” trial offers are just not
long enough. Even a machinist who has plenty of experience on different machinery knows that it takes some time
to learn the different functions of a new machine, and some more time to work with applying those functions to his
projects. For a novice, 30 Days is just far too little time to learn machine work, even if that person devoted all their
time to learning! We invite you to buy with confidence and take your time to really get to know your new Shopmaster
Patriot and experiment with all of its numerous applications.

WHAT IS BETTER -
A PATRIOT VFD
or a separate lathe and mill?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions. Some people feel that
separate machines are better because of reduced set-up times. In some cases,
such as commercial shops with several operators earning $30 - $40 per hour,
separate machines may indeed be more practical. However, for most small
shops, home shops, schools, and hobbyists, the Patriot VFD combination
machine offers real advantages in space-saving and a lower total purchase
price. A common oversight of the “separates is better” guys is the long term:
Upgrading each individual piece of equipment with digital read-out, ball screw

spending thousands on machine the time to install, not to mention multiple coolant systems, benches, and sevwork for their carbon fiber brakes eral sets of duplicate tools. With the Shopmaster Patriot, all of our advanced

THE PURPOSE OF DIGITAL READ-OUT
DRO stands for Digital Read Out. It is a system designed to eliminate machinist errors and increase effciency. On
the SHOPMASTER PATRIOT each of the three axes has a drive handle and a dial dividrd into 0.001” increments.
Therefore 1 complete turn of the handle is 0.200” in motion (1 fifth of 1 inch, or 200 thousandths). In other words, if
you turn the handle 5 complete turns, you will have a motion of 1.00” (one inch). This method of measuring allows
the operator to count turns of the handle for general postioniong, and to use the dial marks for precise measurements, or “fine tuning”. The SHOPMASTER offers an exclusive feature not found elsewhere: each dial is free floating so that the operator can move the dial to zero at any time before beginnning to count. Because all machines
have some inherent backlash, the operator will move the screw in the direction of the cut, take out the last, and
then set the dial to zero. For an experienced machinist, thesr things are second nature. For a beginner, this concept can be quite rattling and cause some mistakes. Some of the old-fashioned 1980s style machines use metric
leadscrews and dials with odd-numbered measurement sequences. For the beginning machinist, especially, the
handle turn count method makes measuring accurately a real challenge. The DRO system eliminates this type
of error and reduces the learning curve. Our backlash, the DRO display tells you the exact amount of motion to
a resoloution of 0.0004” (4 ten-thousandths of an inch). Plus, if you need to step away from the machine, for any
reason (for example, the phone rings), your exact position is on the display when you return. Often, when using
the handle turn count method, being even a little distracted or interrupted often results in forgetting exactly how
many turns you have made. Our DRO has many functions to help your machining skills, such as diameter scaling
for lathe work and multiple bolt hole programming for milling/drilling projects. The SHOPMASTER PRO-LINE DRO uses
the most advanced measuring system in the industry. Housed in heavy aluminium extrusions with neoprene seals
and shielded from chips and fluids our system is virtually error-free. Our cables are flex-metal shielded with screw
on connections. Our system is similar to those used in production shops on $500,000.00 machines. Other 3-in-1
companies sell magnetic scale systems which can fail if used with liquid coolants, or low-tech systems that use mechanical racks and gears to turn encoders leaving the system vulnerable to errors from machine vibration and they
use telephone cables which are subject to melting by hot chips and errors in the connectors. SHOPMASTER tested
both these systems extensively before rejecting them in favor or our professional DRO. Those “other companies”
sell you a low-tech “kit” and tell you to hacksaw the scales to fit, then to spend frustrating hours drilling and tapping
holes to match the kit to your machine, which usually leaves an unprofessional look. Some even have the gall to
charge you hundreds of extra dollars for a “special mounting kit”. Your SHOPMASTER machine has been designed
from ground up to accept the DRO system. All holes are drilled an tapped, the drive plates and shields are included
with your standard machine-factory made and painted to match. If your order DRO with your machine as a part of
the initial purchase, we install it before shipping. If you decided to upgrade to DRO1, 2 or 10 years from now, it will
just be a pleasurable hour or so to bolt the system to your machine. If you want professsionial results, SHOPMASTER
is your only choice.

Shopmaster 30th Anniversary
Shopmaster Advanced Machining Upgrades: Fully Integrated CNC
Shopmaster has been the leader in CNC for
home shop and education for 25 years. Our first
CNC machine, the ShopTask Compu-Drive, built
in 1986 was revolutionary for its time in form
and function. Since then we have continuously
upgraded not only the machine itself, but the
CNC hardware and software. As a result of these
efforts, we have been able to produce the first
and ONLY fully-integrated CNC system available
in our class, at the LOWEST PRICE. Other companies claim to have “integral systems”, however
these add-on boxes just sit on your bench, and
you are still required to spend more money to
buy the motors, mounting brackets, etc. Not
only does it end up costing hundreds more than
the “advertised price”, but as these units often
replace the original handwheels, it renders all
your manual functions useless. The Shopmaster fully-integrated CNC uses controls that are
truly integral. In fact, every Shopmaster comes
from the factory with our custom enclosure built
into the standard design of the machine that is
designed to allow the user to retain all manual
functions. It is even possible to add this system
on to one of our older models!
1986
1986 Compu-Drive CNC Machine
WHAT IS CNC?
CNC is the abbreviated version of “Computer Numerical
Control.” CNC allows the user to do machine work via
instructions given to an IBM compatible computer. The
user tells the computer, the computer tells the machine,
and the machine performs the task. Projects can be
designed with industry standard G and M codes, or files
may be imported from most CAD-CAM software via the
DXF translator.

to match the machine size and power of
our spindle motors. In this way, both the
machine and CNC can be utilized to their
full capacity without overworking either
component.
Depending on the material being worked,
the machine will operate under load at
20 IPM ( inches per minute) and can run
at 60 IPM for rapid traverse moves.

One of the most frequently asked questions is:
STEPPER vs SERVO?
One of the most commonly asked questions regarding CNC operations is, “What’s the difference between Stepper
and Servo systems, and which is better?”
A lot of people make the common mistake of assuming the more expensive of the options must be the best option.
The actual answer to which is the better system depends on the machinist’s skill level as well as the nature of the
project at hand. Each system has advantages over the other depending on the project and user...
Stepper systems are best for less experienced operators because of the “fool-proof” nature of stepper motors. They
are able to tolerate a lot of errors without suffering any major damage. A stepper system when properly setup can
produce results equal to those produced with a Servo system, just using lower feed rates. On a Shopmaster Patriot
machine the parameters will be in the 6-20 IPM (inches per minute) range. In some cases, a stepper system can
stall and lose steps causing some error in your work for several possible reasons: dull tools, too high of a feed rate,
hard spots in the material, etc. For this reason we suggest you always perform some test cuts on various materials
and find the stall point, then set your feed rate at about 75% of this. Once you learn your machine’s parameters for
various materials, a stepper system will produce excellent results time and again.
A Servo system operates with a DC motor with an encoder that counts and compares signals from your computer.
Therefore, if the Servo encounters resistance, it will continue to drive until the encoder tells the computer it has
gone the entire specified distance. Because the Servo can run at higher feed rates (up to 60 IPM), errors in tool
choice, feed rates, etc may cause extensive damage to the system. For this reason, we do not offer servo systems
for our machine.

Most machine tools operate with Acme thread lead
screws and nuts. Acme is a special square form screw
which has a long wearing life and generates good force
for moving objects. Acme threads generally have an
inherent backlash of about 0.004 - 0.010” (four to ten
thousandths of one inch). This backlash is necessary
for the screw to move freely inside the nut.

REFERENCE AXIS
A ball screw is a special screw with rounded grooves
and utilizes a nut which contains re-circulating ball
bearings which ride in the grooves of the screw. The
ball screw assembly generally has less inherent
backlash than the Acme screw (0.001 - 0.002”), but
its main advantage is the extemely low friction which
allows your CNC to run at higher feed rates. A ball
screw cannot be made in as fine of thread pitch as an
Acme screw. Most Acme screws are 10 TPI (threads
per inch), while the ball screw is just 5 TPI. The cutting force generated by each system is about the same
because the Acme screw has double the mechanical
leverage. However, the ball screw can generate much
greater speeds during rapid transverse moves, considerably reducing the overall program time.
The Shopmaster ball screws are grade C-7 with multi
track deflector ball nuts for anti backlash and are
20MM diameter on x and y axes for zero flex. The z
axis is 16mm.

FAQs
frequently asked questions
Once I get my crate home, what is the best
way to un load the machine?
We recommend using an engine hoist or
“Cherry-Picker” type lifting device to move the
crate from your truck or trailer to your shop
floor. (Tool rental agencies usually offer an
inexpensive half-day rental).
I live in a community that has rules about
excess noise, how loud is the Patriot?
Your lawnmower is probably much louder, in
fact, the Shopmaster Patriot is not much louder
than an average washer or dryer.
Do I have to modify my electrical panel?
No, one ShopmaSter patriot motor pulls 6.5
amps (about the same as a hairdryer). It plugs
into a standard (220 volt) household outlet
which has a capacity of about 20 amps.
What are the 4-Axes?
The four standard axes are X(left to right),Y(front
to back) ,Z (quill up and down) and A The A
axis moves the entire mill head up and down
for tool changes or for longer travel. It can also
be used for the CNC rotary table.

Q: I bought a 3-in-1 from an estate sale. I’m not sure of the year or model or even if it is a genuine ShopmaSter machine. Can I still get

A: We always recommend ordering an Owner’s Manual (we still have manuals for the “late-models”- see page 21). The detailed partsbreakdown section is the best reference for making an inventory of spare parts you need. Most of our accesories are compatible with our
older models, and most can even be upgraded to full CNC, as our machines have been CNC ready since 1990. Please call or send us
