REVIEW DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY SUMMER 2010 • VOLUME 3, No 1 Honoring Excellence Annual scholarship benefit a huge success 2010 EIB Award recipients Amway Corp. President Doug DeVos and Chairman Steve Van Andel REVIEW SUMMER 2010 Message from the president A great year! It’s been a great year! Looking back at my first year as president of this remarkable university, I’m grateful for your support and excited about how much we accomplished together so quickly. We have defined a new vision and completed the strategic plan that I identified as immediate goals when I started as president last August. This five-year roadmap for success has earned high marks from our board of trustees, as well as from our university community and our partners in the business community. “Vision 2015” describes the Davenport of the future - a premier university in Michigan renowned for quality. Goals in our five-year plan include positioning ourselves to apply for the Malcolm Baldrige Award, the nation’s highest quality achievement. As you will read in these pages, we already have started to move the quality needle forward. We received five-year accreditation this year from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc. (NLNAC) for our diploma and degree nursing programs. The Leadership & Management Development Institute (LMDI) was recognized for its corporate learning program developed in partnership with Amway Corporation. We were honored to receive the largest charitable gift in our history – a $2.5 million donation from the M.E. Davenport Foundation toward construction of the Robert W. Sneden Center, the newest addition to the W.A. Lettinga Campus. Our Excellence In Business Dinner was our most successful ever. And our hockey team won its third straight national ACHA championship. This year also marks the centennial of our university being named for M.E. Davenport, who was named president in 1910 and whose legacy we continue to revere and build upon. Enormous opportunities remain, and I know that with the support of our alumni, donors and friends, we are up to the challenge of building the quality university we envision. As I mentioned in my address at the March Investiture Ceremony, this is our time, and we are the people to make it happen. This is the vision that will define DU in 2015. We appreciate people like you who share our vision and our excitement about what we anticipate will be five of the most eventful years in our proud history. Sincerely, Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. President 2 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW www.davenport.edu Historic Celebration Investiture installs new president The presidency of Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D. was officially recognized and honored on March 31 by more than 900 faculty members, staff, students, legislators, community and business leaders, and presidents from colleges and universities across the state who attended his investiture ceremony in the student center on the W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids. Ceremonies featured a symphonic brass ensemble, a parade of international students bearing flags of their countries and a procession of DU faculty arrayed in academic regalia. Speakers who greeted and congratulated Dr. Pappas included U.S. Congressmen Vernon J. Ehlers and Peter Hoekstra, former Grand Rapids Community College President Dr. Juan Olivarez, Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, Chancellor Emeritus Don Maine, and Wolverine World Wide President and CEO Blake Krueger. Associate Dean of the Donald W. Maine School of Business, Frank Novakowski, spoke on behalf of DU’s faculty, while Kyle Studebaker, a sophomore seeking a bachelor’s degree in marketing, represented the student body with his address. Board of Trustees Chairman Ken Bovee and Vice Chairman Tracy Graham issued the charge of office and conferred upon Dr. Pappas the president’s medallion. Davenport Trustee and Regional President of Fifth Third Bank Michelle Van Dyke served as master of ceremonies. www.davenport.edu Chancellor Emeritus Don Maine addresses guests including local, state and national government leaders; statewide college and university presidents; and the DU Board of Trustees. We will achieve this status through relentless drive and desire on the part of every one of us to create and exceed benchmarks for quality. “Davenport – This is our time. Davenport – This is the place. Davenport – We are the people.” Dr. Pappas, who was chosen as president of Davenport University by the Board of Trustees from a strong field of national candidates, began his tenure at DU on Aug. 3, 2009. Congratulations, Class of 2010 We were proud to honor the Class of 2010 during a university-wide commencement ceremony on May 2 at the Van Andel Arena. More than 1,200 graduates walked across the stage to accept their diplomas to the applause of 8,000 family and friends. David Brandon, former CEO of Domino’s Pizza and the University of Michigan’s new athletic director, was the featured commencement speaker. Brandon spoke of life experiences and what one ordinary person can accomplish when he or she is willing to take advantage of the doors that open throughout their life. Brandon’s upbeat leadership, innovation and accomplishments were rewarded with an honorary doctorate degree from Davenport University. Congratulations to all our students who reached this milestone! Appreciation also goes out to the many volunteers who helped make this year’s ceremony a tremendous success. 6 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW www.davenport.edu After the commencement ceremony, all graduates became proud alumni of their new alma mater. Graduates received best wishes from family and friends. President Pappas congratulates one of the 1,200 members of the Class of 2010. See more photos online at flickr.com/ davenportuniversity Another superstar student awarded Ford scholarship We are pleased to announce the second annual recipient of the Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship. Jenna Avery lives in Sunfield, Mich., and is a 2010 graduate of Lakewood High School. She is valedictorian of her class and plans to major in accounting. As a National Honor Society member with a 4.0 high school GPA and very impressive ACT score of 31, Jenna is well prepared academically to succeed in the university environment. She was captain of her high school tennis team and volunteers extensively in her church and community. The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Scholarship is Davenport’s most prestigious scholarship, covering the costs of tuition, books, fees, on-campus housing and meal plan, plus study abroad. Besides academic success, the recipient must demonstrate some of the ideals espoused by Gerald R. Ford, including leadership, civic responsibility, service, ethics and courage of conviction. The entire process has sown seeds for an enriched Davenport University culture of collaboration. To lay the groundwork, a task force with representation from across the university was charged with identifying key external forces and their implications for the institution. Next, a Strategic Planning Committee met to develop the first draft of a new vision. Committee members were selected to assure diversity of position, function, gender, ethnic background and location for representation from faculty and staff to students and alumni. Town hall meetings on several campuses gave every employee an opportu- nity to provide input on the initial draft. A survey was conducted afterward to gauge agreement. All input was considered to create the final version of Vision 2015. Several West Michigan CEOs also were presented with the Vision, and they responded with kudos for the bold and far-reaching plan. Next, functional teams developed vision-tied goals with budgets for year one. These were presented to the University Leadership Team, which then prioritized the goals before turning the list over to a cross-functional Goals and Budget Priorities Committee. With completion of final committee work and additional town meetings, the DU Board of Trustees approved the entire package. Vision 2015 was unveiled to the public at the Investiture Ceremony for Dr. Rick Pappas on March 31. We now have a vision centered on quality, including a culture of continuous improvement, leading-edge programs, a service-oriented institution, excellence in enrollment and retention, and student success, among other aspirations of highest quality. With an overwhelming mandate from our entire university community on our bold new Vision and Strategic Plan, we can be confident of success as everyone pulls in the same direction toward shared goals. Wessell Award was established as Davenport’s highest honor to recognize a faculty or staff member. The annual award honors a remarkable individual who exemplified the mission and vision of DU. For many years, Mr. Ty Wessell served students, faculty and staff through Davenport’s cultural values. The two 2009 recipients embody the qualities that made Mr. Wessell a successful DU employee and person. Dr. Barbara A. Mieras, senior vice president for major gifts, is recognized across the state for her achievements in higher education and within our communities as a leading ambassador for Davenport. She has been instrumental in building the reputation of Davenport University and raising funds for new facilities and scholarships. Her 25-year Davenport career has included serving as president of Davenport College. Susan Crkovski, executive director of student services, has worn many hats during more than 20 years at Davenport, but no matter what her role, she remained student focused. She is very knowledgeable in most aspects of university life and has served in leadership roles in enrollment, operations, financial aid, and student services. This year’s Tyrus R. Wessell Award recipients: Dr. Barbara A. Mieras, senior vice president for major gifts (above left) and Susan Crkovski, executive director of student services (below left). 8 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW www.davenport.edu Introducing Dennis Washington: New head of advancement We are proud to announce the appointment of Dennis C. Washington as Davenport University’s new executive vice president for advancement. Formerly vice president for university advancement at Kettering University, he was selected following a thorough search and started his new position at DU on June 1. Washington has a track record of building strategic constituent relationships and structured advancement programs to support university funding priorities. He also has extensive experience in re-engaging alumni, broadening the donor base and conducting major campaigns. He has served as director of corporate and foundation relations at Central Michigan University and is completing studies toward a doctorate in higher education administration. His skills, abilities and experience are well suited to Davenport University, and he is looking forward to meeting and getting to know many friends and alumni of Davenport. Livonia’s 70 Nichols Club aids Rwanda library It all started back in 2007 with the search for a technology-related service learning project. DU’s School of Technology coordinator Steve Boyak and associate professor Linda Haberaecker were looking for a suitable project for their students. “We immediately remembered Dr. Don Nichols over at Oakland Community College and his efforts to build the first public library in Rwanda,” says Boyak. Boyak and Haberaecker contacted Professor Emeritus Nichols – but even as he agreed to talk to their DU students, no one had any idea he would ultimately create a lasting bond with them. Nichols was passionate as he spoke to the students about the importance of raising funds for the library, and the opportunities it would offer the people in Rwanda for years to come. The students, in turn, were inspired to create a donation website for the library. Nichols was impressed. “These students used the skills they learned at Davenport to create a way to magnify our efforts in building the library,” he says. But the students didn’t stop there. They also created the 70 Nichols Club – a service project group named in honor of Dr. Nichols’ request that attendees to his retirement party bring 70 nickels each, to be donated to the Rwandan library. The club’s mission is to provide technical assistance to non-profit organizations in the community. Nichols firmly believes the 70 Nichols Club’s impact could extend beyond Livonia, and into the greater United States. The club made such an impact on Dr. Nichols and his wife that they set up an endowed fund to help support future club projects – in hopes club members will continue making a difference for years to come. Remember that library in Rwanda? Thanks to Dr. Nichols’ efforts – along with that group of dedicated DU technology students – it is now open. www.davenport.edu Volunteers make MLK legacy known A standing-room-only crowd of 200 Davenport students, staff and faculty began Martin Luther King Day with University President Dr. Richard Pappas. Dr. Pappas introduced Dr. Kojo Quartey, dean of the Donald W. Maine School of Business, who spoke about Dr. King’s work for civil rights and equality for all. A silent tribute march around the W.A. Lettinga Campus followed. Our student volunteers also participated in telling stories, playing games and assisting with art activities – all focusing on diversity – for children at the downtown Grand Rapids YMCA. The true celebration of friendship in many colors culminated in a group art project, Hands of Friendship, featuring colorful, cutout, of each child’s handprints. “Honoring Dr. King was truly an incredible experience,” said Sierra Demski, volunteer coordinator at Davenport. “I hope he will continue to inspire the sense of community we all felt that day.” The Davenport service project was registered with serve.gov as part of the nationwide MLK Day of Service. DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW 9 Leadership & Management Development Institute wins award Amway Corporation recognized for partnership with DU New programs this fall Sustainable Business Development This specialty is a new option for management BBA students. The program is also offered as a postbaccalaureate certificate open to individuals with a bachelor’s degree that have an interest in careers using sustainable business practices. Several companies were recognized for their learning programs and corporate universities at the recent Global Leadership Congress held at the University of Pennsylvania. Amway Corporation and DU were both recognized with the “Best Practice” award in the College/Corporate Partnerships category in recognition of the Global Leadership Certification Program (GLCP). The program was coordinated and facilitated by Davenport University’s Leadership & Management Development Institute (LMDI) for Amway’s first-line leaders. This partnership consisted of DU facilitation and expertise with Amway’s Harvard Business Publishing content, including Leading & Motivating, Goal Setting, Feedback Essentials, Coaching and Delegating. During the six months of learning, Amway students had the opportunity to learn from both the application of concepts as well as the ongoing peer interaction in the Blackboard classroom. To personalize the learning of each student, the LMDI program was further supplemented and supported by individualized coaching and assessment led by Davenport University facilitators. Upon completing the learning outcomes for the LMDI program, Amway students earned DU business credits and have the option to continue their education at Davenport University while using the skills they have developed to further their careers. In 2009, the program enrolled 65 students in 18 countries, and in 2010 the program currently has 70 students enrolled in 12 countries. For more information visit davenport.edu/LMDI Technology Management The technology management bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare students for a variety of management positions related to information technology. There are three technical specialty options to choose from: networking, computer information systems and information security. Tying a technical specialty to a project management major makes students more marketable in today’s ever-changing environment. (Michael Edward) Davenport, who began an illustrious career here in 1910 at what was then Grand Rapids Business College. Following the departure of the college’s owner soon after he arrived, M.E. Davenport, in keeping with his entrepreneurial spirit, stepped into a leadership role and assumed sole responsibility for the college and its students. From this day forward, the college was known as 14 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW Davenport Business College. In the years that followed, Mr. Davenport served as instructor, administrator, registrar and recruiter and returned the school’s focus to one of career-minded opportunity. Recognizing the value of athletics in the educational experience, he added football, baseball and basketball programs. He pioneered a “practical curriculum” that included well-rounded studies but focused on preparing students for specific careers. As he said, “. . . we set out to develop a school that would give to modern business the class of business men and business women it needed.” M. E. Davenport and his wife, Mable Engle Davenport, raised their three children in Grand Rapids, Mich. Granddaughter Peggy Moceri says her grandfather had a very full life. “He was an avid hunter, fisherman, master gardener and also ran a working farm.” Mr. Davenport faithfully served as president until 1959, and played a significant role in making today’s DU the unprecedented success it has become. www.davenport.edu Largest charitable gift in Davenport history makes academic center a reality We were honored to receive a $2.5 million donation from the M.E. Davenport Foundation toward the newest academic building on the W.A. Lettinga Campus in Grand Rapids – the Robert W. Sneden Center. The largest charitable gift in the university’s history is helping fund construction of the $8.5 million project, which is nearing completion for its opening this fall. We are gratified by the generosity of the Davenport and Sneden families. The Sneden Center will enable Davenport to expand student enrollment and services at the Lettinga Campus and increase access and opportunities for business, education and the greater Grand Rapids community. The latest addition to the campus also will enhance the learning environment for students and be a valued resource for business and community organizations. Steil, who passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2010, was a true friend of Davenport University and an entrepreneur and public servant who left his community of Grand Rapids a better place. After serving in the United States Coast Guard, Glenn joined Steelcase in sales and purchasing and then later established Steil, Inc. and Compatico, both office furniturerelated companies. Glenn graduated from Davenport University in 1962, majoring in accounting. He received Davenport’s Distinguished Alumni Award and also was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree. Glenn served for several years with distinction on the Davenport Univeristy governing and foundation boards. Following a successful business career, Glenn served as a Michigan Senator for eight years. Glenn and his wife, Barbara, have been long-time supporters of Davenport University and have given generously to establish an endowed scholarship fund and support other key university initiatives. Glenn, a dear friend to Davenport, will be missed. The spring alumni fund-raising campaign, which included the MillionPenny Challenge, exceeded its goal of $10,000. The fund provides scholarships each year to deserving students who may not be able to afford the entire cost of an education. Every penny really does make a difference. Steve Axdorff ‘89, senior mortgage loan officer at Founders Bank & Trust says, “I am where I am in my career because of my education from Davenport. I, like most students, took out student loans to go to college, so when I received my scholarships I was extremely grateful. Now it is my turn to give back, my turn to help support scholarships for other students like me.” Support from alumni is essential for a private university. Mandee is vice-president and senior commercial portfolio manager at Huntington Bank in Grand Rapids and also serves on the advisory board of Camp O’Malley for the local Boys and Girls Club. Additionally, Mandee was presi- dent of the Grand Rapids Young Professionals, and chaired the first local Young Leaders Society of the American Cancer Society and its annual Cattle Barons Ball fund-raiser. The MBA program at DU prepared her for these experiences – especially since she attended the accelerated program at night with other professionals. “All my fellow students were just like me – working professionals who came to classes after working nine-hour days,” she says. “All my fellow students were just like me - working professionals who came to classes after working nine-hour days.” “I learned almost as much from my fellow students as I did from the professors.” “I could apply my classroom studies directly to my job,” says Mandee. “In fact, the work I did for my capstone project is still in use within my department today.” 4,400 Facebook friends... and counting Some people refer to Paul Jendrasiak (’94 business administration) as “the unofficial mayor of Grand Rapids.” That’s because Paul is one of Grand Rapids’ biggest cheerleaders. “We’re really getting it right as a city, even as Michigan is going through a tough time,” he says. “We seem to be the bright spot here.” Paul’s social networking is part fun and part business. “Facebook is very useful to raise awareness of great places and cool events happening here in Grand Rapids.” Facebook also helps Paul promote his spam-filter software company, spambully.com. The benefit: Spambully generates a lot of buzz, both nationally and internationally. Wired Magazine recently rated the software a “Best Buy,” and Spambully was also featured on NBC Nightly News, and in The Wall Street Journal and USA Today. There’s even a mention of Spambully in the popular Internet For Dummies book series. Paul credits his DU experience for giving him a strong foundation in business, marketing and advertising. “Davenport has a lot of people with invaluable real-world experience,” he says. “The university’s contacts in the business community help students network and find new opportunities long after they graduate.” For more information on spambully, visit spambully.com 28 DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW www.davenport.edu TIME magazine recognizes alum’s SE Michigan business Young alums mix TIME recently profiled DU alum Kalyn Risker (’06 business administration) and her Detroit-based non-profit organization, Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE). SAFE is dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence acquire jobs through specialized training focused on gaining or building the skills they need to reenter the workforce. Risker says the idea of SAFE came to her during a business class she took at Davenport University, where a simple writing assignment eventually helped create a successful domestic violence organization. It was also at Davenport that Kalyn developed her strong leadership capabilities, which TIME credits as being the major reason her organization is so successful. “The goal,” Risker said, “is to help these survivors find good jobs that pay well and manage their finances. That way, they can maintain their independence from their abusers and possibly break the cycle of economic abuse.” SAFE also assists companies whose employees may be in abusive situations. This year, SAFE celebrates its fourth anniversary, helping more women throughout southeast Michigan find work and gain financial independence. The elegant JW Marriott in downtown Grand Rapids was the site of the firstever Young Alumni Mixer sponsored by the DU Alumni Association. The mixer was an opportunity for area grads to network, unwind and meet new friends. Local on-the-scene website Grand Rapids Social Diary covered the event and also posted several photos of alumni and friends, including Jennifer Wilson, Jaime Brookmeyer, Nicole Cook and Paul Jendrasiak (whose 40 Under 40 bio is featured in this issue of DU Review). The goal of the Alumni Association is to build a lifelong affinity to Davenport University, engaging alumni through their time and talents. Learn more about upcoming alumni activities by becoming a fan of the Alumni Association on facebook.com/DUAlumni For more information about SAFE, visit newsafestart.org www.davenport.edu DAVENPORT UNIVERSITY REVIEW 29 CLASS NOTES Marriages & Engagements Professional courses.
