The mission of the Town of Yarmouth’s Division of Senior Services is to foster an Age-Friendly community that
enhances the quality of life for the Town’s older adults (60+) and their families by providing programs and services in a
supportive and accessible environment that contributes to vital aging through mental, physical, and financial wellness.
INSIDE THIS
ISSUE
Thank you to all that, Mother Yarmouth, you are caring for and protecting today and
tomorrow for all who live here.
I hope that you watched our UMASS Boston Findings report about
Age-Friendly Yarmouth. We have stretched the boundaries of the World Health
Organization Age-Friendly Community framework and created a broader understanding of all who live, play and work in
Yarmouth. We have a lifespan approach! Copies of this report will be posted on
our website soon and will be available in hardcopy at the
Libraries and in the Senior Center.
Necessity is the Mother of all invention. It is out of necessity that new thoughts will
continue to emerge to solve the challenges of housing, transportation and employment that affect both our youngest and
oldest citizens. We must balance the needs of all age groups to realize our fullest
potential as a community. While these challenges may seem large, I am confident
that we have access to all the great hearts and minds needed to invent solutions.
Innovation is invited and
underway everywhere.
Grateful for our Mothers! Kathi

Those who make compassion an essential part of their lives find the joy of life. Kindness deepens the spirit
and produces rewards that cannot be completely explained in words. It is an experience more powerful than
words. To become acquainted with kindness one must be prepared to learn new things and feel new
feelings. Kindness is more than a philosophy of the mind. It is a philosophy of the spirit.

Virtual Dementia Tour
Friday, May 27th at 1:00 PM
Your Window Into Their World
“Until There’s a Cure, Take the Tour”
The Virtual Dementia Tour is an individual
experience through simulated dementia created for
families, organizations, and companies seeking to
better understand the physical and mental
challenges of those with dementia. After
experiencing this sensory training, you will have a
greater understanding of the realities of what living
with dementia is like. This unique, interactive
program has been shown to improve
communication and care. Learning to create a
positive environment for those with dementia can
only come from attempting to walk in their shoes.
Please join us in welcoming Bonnie Durell with
Gentiva Hospice to facilitate
this interesting program.
Pre-registration is required by calling 978-440-0618.

MAY 2016
Alzheimer’s Support Group
Wednesday, May 18th at 4:30 PM
Cognitive diseases affect one out of nine
Americans over the age of 65. Personality and
behavioral changes leave families at a loss as to
how to help their loved ones and themselves.
These changes, that can occur over a long period
of time, are what differentiate dementia from other
age-related diseases. This group will help families
develop better coping strategies, learn more
about dementia, and help connect to support
services in the community. This group is for adult
children caring for aging parents, spouses, or
anyone caring for a loved one with dementia.
Call 508-896-5170 for more information.
SNAP - Food Program
There are special eligibility rules for seniors age
60+ to receive SNAP benefits.
Your net income may be over the limit, but there
are many expenses you can deduct that may
bring you down the eligibility guideline.
The application is short and easy to fill out.
If you think you may be eligible, please make an
appointment by calling
Hilda Davenport at 508-394-7606 Ext:1335
