MISSION
To enable learners to develop a
life of faith in God, and to use their
knowledge, skills, and understandings
to serve God and humanity
VISION
For every learner to excel in faith,
learning, and service, blending biblical
truth and academic achievement
to honor God and bless others
The Seventh-day Adventist
Church recognizes God
as the ultimate source of
existence, truth, and power.
In the beginning God created,
in His image, a perfect
humanity, a perfection later
marred by sin. Education
in its broadest sense is a
means of returning human
beings to their original
relationship with God. The
distinctive characteristics
of this Adventist worldview,
built around creation, the fall,
redemption, and re-creation,
are derived from the Bible
and the inspired writings of
Ellen G. White.
The aim of true education is
to restore human beings into
the image of God as revealed
by the life of Jesus Christ.
Only through the guidance
of the Holy Spirit can this be
accomplished. An education of
this kind imparts far more than
academic knowledge. It fosters
a balanced development of
the whole person—spiritual,
physical, intellectual, and
social-emotional—a process
that spans a lifetime. Working
together, homes, schools, and
churches cooperate with divine
agencies to prepare learners to
be good citizens in this world
and for eternity.
CORE CURRICULUM GOALS
1.
2.
3.
4.
Learners will choose to accept God as
the Creator and the Redeemer.
Learners will grow in their knowledge and
understanding of God’s Creation.
Learners will creatively apply their spiritual, physical,
intellectual, and social-emotional knowledge.
Learners will demonstrate their commitment
to the Creator through service to others.

ADVENTIST EDUCATION
STANDARDS
Standards, what learners
should know (content)
and be able to do (skills),
serve as the framework for
curriculum development.
Standards in NAD Seventhday Adventist schools
reflect the Adventist
worldview across the K-12
curricula, as well as the
integration of national and
provincial/state standards.
The Adventist worldview accepts the Bible
as the standard by which everything else is
measured. Four key concepts emerge from a
biblical worldview that can be used as a lens for
curriculum development, as well as informing
the essential questions and big ideas of any
content area:
1.
2.
3.
4.
CREATION
What is God’s intention?
FALL
How has God’s purpose been distorted?
REDEMPTION
How does God help us to respond?
RE-CREATION
How can we be restored in
the image of God?
As new textbooks are adopted, standards for the
respective content areas are developed or revised.

SNAPSHOT
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
The selected physical education program for Seventhday Adventist schools is SPARK Physical Education.
Components of the program are available in both
digital and print formats. In addition to the SPARK
materials, two manuals have been developed for small
schools—NAD Physical Education for Small Schools,
Grades 1-4 and NAD Physical Education for Small
Schools, Grades 5-8.
The small school
manuals, along with
additional resources,
are available on the
NAD website.
STANDARDS
The following revised NAD Elementary Standards are
available:
• NAD Elementary Physical Education Standards that
align with the SHAPE National Standards & GradeLevel Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education.
• NAD Elementary Social Studies Standards that align
with the NCSS National Curriculum Standards for
Social Studies.
Hardcopies are
available for purchase
from AdventSource
for $1.50 per folder.
Standards PDFs are
posted to the NAD
website.
• NAD Elementary Technology Standards that align with
the ISTE Standards.
SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM The adopted social studies program for Seventh-day
Adventist schools is McGraw-Hill Networks Social

NAD
PROCESS
Elementary education textbooks are reviewed and adopted/developed by the NAD Curriculum
Committee, in conjunction with NAD Summer Committees, on a six-to-seven year cycle.
Textbooks are selected based on their alignment with Adventist Education Standards. Bible,
language arts, and science textbooks are developed so the content intentionally integrates the
Adventist worldview. Multi-grade guides for textbooks are available for most content areas.
Summer Committees are
organized by the NAD
Curriculum Committee to assist
in the adoption or development
of textbooks. Elementary
teachers, school/conference/
union administrators, and higher
education professors, from

across the NAD, are selected
to serve on the committees
based on their content area
expertise. Elementary union
associates serve as the
chairpersons of the Summer
Committees. The responsibilities

Kindergarten Stepping Stones: A Journey to Excellence through Discovery is an
integrated curriculum that utilizes literature-based themes with strong spiritual
connections so children may come to know God better and love him more.
Silver Burdett Making Music, 2005 by Pearson Scott Foresman has been adopted
by the North American Division. It offers a solid music program with numerous
connections to other content areas. There is a variety of activities to choose from
for both the trained musical educator as well as the regular classroom teacher.
The Making Music Implementation Guide, 2002 is available on the North American
Division website and has been developed to make the music program manageable
as well as affordable. Only grades 3 and 5 materials need to be purchased from
Pearson Scott Foresman. Based on a four-year cycle, grades 1-4 are to be taught
using the grade 3 materials, and grades 5-8 are to be taught using the grade 5
materials. This guide also includes information on incorporating hymnology with the
program as well as “cautions” which are always needed when using a secular program.
The Teacher’s Edition and the Compact Disk Package are essential components
for the classroom. Although the student editions are not crucial for the program
to be successful, some schools may want to purchase enough for every three
to four students. Materials can be ordered directly from Pearson School.

THEME BOOKS
Books are the driving force behind Pathways. Each of the nine thematic
studies is launched by theme books. These books, selected for their high
interest, literary, and content values, represent a range of topics and genres.
DAILY LESSON GUIDE
The Daily Lesson Guide accompanies each
theme and is the day-to-day teaching plan for
each thematic study. The Daily Lesson Guide
contains a detailed instructional plan for teaching
language arts skills within a cross-curricular
and thematic focus. Spiritual connections are
integrated into the reading instructional plan.
GUIDED READING BOOKS
It is through Guided Reading, the heart of a balanced reading program,
that Pathways can show students how to read and support them while
reading. When students read with others on similar levels of proficiency
at their instructional level, they gain additional opportunities to become
readers. Leveled books to use with guided reading groups:
Pathways’ Seedling Guided Readers are the basic recommended set
of leveled readers to be used in the first and second grades.
Reading A-Z provides a wide range of leveled readers. Order
information can be found on the NAD website.
A Reason for Reading by The Concerned Group offers nearly 100
leveled books featuring Scripture and Values. Each title has a
detailed Teacher Guide. Teachers can preview each page of
every book by visiting The Concerned Group website.
Pearson Scott Foresman Online Leveled Readers offers downloadable titles for K-6. There are thousands of downloadable
titles in the reading, social studies, and science collections
for grades K-6. The cost is normally $200-600 per collection.
However, the Adventist school contract is $341 per school for
all three collections. One year is left in the contract.
Pearson offers the following printed bundle pricing:
ISBN10: 1428435301 | ISBN13: 9781428435308
Print-only K/2 Reading Bundle Price: $632.97
ISBN10: 142843531X | ISBN13: 9781428435315
Print-only 3/5 Reading Bundle Price: $632.97
To order contact: Mary Philpott. Ask about the leveled readers for
Seventh-day Adventist schools. This price will appear on their website.
WRITER’S HANDBOOK
The Writer’s Handbook is primarily a student resource. Students keep
this guide at their desks as a handy reference to use throughout the day.
During Writing Workshop this handbook serves as a tool for teaching mini
lessons about strategies or forms of writing. Teachers and students will
also find this handbook useful while studying grammar, mechanics, etc.
PHONICS
The Chall-Popp Phonics program assists students in learning the major
phonological patterns in English. The student book is a write-in text, and
phonics readers are incorporated into the phonics program for grades 1 and 2.
TEACHER MANUAL
The Teacher Manual contains information on
guided reading implementation, comprehension
strategies, reading and writing workshops, word
study (daily oral language, phonics, handwriting,
spelling), assessment options, working with the
exceptional child and the homeschool partnership.
WRITER’S HANDBOOK
Teachers will want to have their own copies of the
Writer’s Handbook for mini lessons in grammar,
writing, mechanics, etc., throughout Pathways.
The Writer’s Toolkit provides additional resources
for mini-lesson instruction and is available on
the NAD website or from AdventSource.
PHONICS TEACHER’S EDITION
The Chall-Popp Phonics program forms the
basis for the explicit, sequential approach to
phonics instruction in Pathways. The Teacher’s
Edition contains hands-on student activities,
intervention strategies, and numerous instructional
techniques to enrich phonics instruction. Phonics
will be formally taught in grades 1 and 2.
POETRY
Poetry is used throughout the themes,
thus it is recommended that a copy of
the Random House Book of Poetry for
Children be provided for each school.
BASIC READING INVENTORY
Pre-primer through Grade 12 and Early Literacy
Assessments. This book by Jerry L. Johns
contains individually administered informal
reading tests (six forms) that can be used by
teachers as an aid in assessing student reading.

ODD YEAR
PART 2
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Big Ideas Math, 2012 is the adopted
hardback edition math program for grades 6-8. It is a “narrower
and deeper program,” combining discovery and direct instruction
approaches that addresses the Common Core State Standards
for Mathematics. A deeper understanding of the math concepts is
achieved by narrowing the focus to fewer topics and developing
concepts through inductive reasoning, engaging activities,
examples, and thought-provoking exercises. The program supports
differentiated instruction as well as the 3-tier RTI model.

The Personal Best Days
from SPARK (built into our
lesson plans with Units 2, 4,
6, 8, and 10) are designed
to provide the same type of
experience as the Presidential
Youth Fitness Program.
SUPPLEMENTARY
MATERIALS
SPARK Physical Education program (K-2, 3-6, 6-8) is the adopted physical education program
for grades 1-8. These SPARK materials are designed to involve all students, create a more active
environment, incorporate social skills, and emphasize health-related fitness and skill development.
The following are components of the SPARK program and are available for each grade band; K-2, 3-6, and 6-8:
• Manual (notebook format containing users guide, unit activities, and daily lesson plans)
• Music CD (preview music, as some selections may not be appropriate)
• SPARKfolio (box format with extended card activities laminated and ready for use)
• SPARKfamily.org (online resources)
NAD Multi-grade Physical Education, Grades 1-4 provides lessons structured to teach one
physical education class to all four primary grades. NAD Multi-grade Physical Education, Grades
5-8 provides lessons to teach one physical education class to the upper grades. The content
is based on the SPARK 3-6 materials and is available as a download on the North American
Division Physical Education website. In addition to the multi-grade manuals, teachers will need to
order SPARK Physical Education, Grades 3-6 (on order form Set #3) and those teaching grades
1-2 will also need access to the online materials for grades K-2 (K-2 PE SPARKfamily.org).
Teachers in one-teacher schools will choose to implement either the grades 1-4 or grades
5-8 manual based on which band reflects the greatest number of students enrolled.
The lessons in the alternate manual will be used to support instruction. For example,
if there are 3 students in grades 1-4 and 8 students in grades 5-8, it would be best to
plan from the NAD Multi-grade Physical Education, Grades 5-8 document.
Kids are Made to Move! Dr. Debbie Morgan, a seasoned teacher with experiences from elementary to
collegiate settings, has created materials suitable for use in elementary schools, grades K-8. Her passion
is to motivate teachers and students to be physically active and equip teachers to provide fun-filled,
high-quality physical education programs for students. Dr. Morgan’s latest programs: “Innovative Physical
Education Activities for Children in grades K-2” and “Innovative Physical Education Activities for Children
in grades 3-8” include a 2-DVD set of physical activities and games, plus an accompanying teacher’s
manual. Each set contains suitable content for a year of 30-minute classes that meet 2 to 3 times a week.
Programs may be ordered through email or using the order form on the website Curriculum Page.

The Social Studies Multi-grade Implementation and Organizational Notebook
(So.S.M.A.R.T.) is an organization manual produced by the North American
Division that responds to the needs of teachers who have been challenged to
complete a social studies textbook, particularly when teaching multiple grades.
Topics for grades 1-4 have been correlated with those of grades 5-8, allowing
a teacher with combined grades to teach the same topic across levels.
