REDEMPTION RE-CREATION What overarching questions provide focus for the unit? MISSION To enable learners to develop a life of faith in God, and to use their knowledge, skills, and understandings to serve God and humanity VISION For every learner to excel in faith, learning, and service, blending biblical truth and academic achievement to honor God and bless others The Seventh-day Adventist Church recognizes God as the ultimate source of existence, truth, and power. In the beginning God created, in His image, a perfect humanity, a perfection later marred by sin. Education in its broadest sense is a means of returning human beings to their original relationship with God. The distinctive characteristics of this Adventist worldview, built around creation, the fall, redemption, and re-creation, are derived from the Bible and the inspired writings of Ellen G. White. The aim of true education is to restore human beings into the image of God as revealed by the life of Jesus Christ. Only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit can this be accomplished. An education of this kind imparts far more than academic knowledge. It fosters a balanced development of the whole person—spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social-emotional—a process that spans a lifetime. Working together, homes, schools, and churches cooperate with divine agencies to prepare learners to be good citizens in this world and for eternity. CORE CURRICULUM GOALS 1. 2. 3. 4. Learners will choose to accept God as the Creator and the Redeemer. Learners will grow in their knowledge and understanding of God’s Creation. Learners will creatively apply their spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social-emotional knowledge. Learners will demonstrate their commitment to the Creator through service to others. For more information on The Core of Adventist Education Curriculum visit the North American Division website, Core Curriculum. NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION E LE M E NTARY Textbo 0k Li st 5 2016-2017 ODD YEAR ADVENTIST EDUCATION STANDARDS Standards, what learners should know (content) and be able to do (skills), serve as the framework for curriculum development. Standards in NAD Seventhday Adventist schools reflect the Adventist worldview across the K-12 curricula, as well as the integration of national and provincial/state standards. The Adventist worldview accepts the Bible as the standard by which everything else is measured. Four key concepts emerge from a biblical worldview that can be used as a lens for curriculum development, as well as informing the essential questions and big ideas of any content area: 1. 2. 3. 4. CREATION What is God’s intention? FALL How has God’s purpose been distorted? REDEMPTION How does God help us to respond? RE-CREATION How can we be restored in the image of God? As new textbooks are adopted, standards for the respective content areas are developed or revised. For more information on Adventist Education Standards, please access these links: adventisteducation.org/curriculum/elementary/standards adventisteducation.org/curriculum/elementary/curriculum_guides NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION E LE M E NTARY Textbo 0k Li st 6 2016-2017 ODD YEAR N O RT H A M E R I C A N D I V I S I O N K-8 Curriculum SNAPSHOT PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM The selected physical education program for Seventhday Adventist schools is SPARK Physical Education. Components of the program are available in both digital and print formats. In addition to the SPARK materials, two manuals have been developed for small schools—NAD Physical Education for Small Schools, Grades 1-4 and NAD Physical Education for Small Schools, Grades 5-8. The small school manuals, along with additional resources, are available on the NAD website. STANDARDS The following revised NAD Elementary Standards are available: • NAD Elementary Physical Education Standards that align with the SHAPE National Standards & GradeLevel Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. • NAD Elementary Social Studies Standards that align with the NCSS National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies. Hardcopies are available for purchase from AdventSource for $1.50 per folder. Standards PDFs are posted to the NAD website. • NAD Elementary Technology Standards that align with the ISTE Standards. SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM The adopted social studies program for Seventh-day Adventist schools is McGraw-Hill Networks Social Studies. Components of the program are available in both digital and print formats. In addition to the Networks materials, a SoSmart Manual has been developed for small schools. Textbooks are selected based on their alignment with Adventist Education Standards. Bible, language arts, and science textbooks are developed so the content intentionally integrates the Adventist worldview. Multi-grade guides for textbooks are available for most content areas. Summer Committees are organized by the NAD Curriculum Committee to assist in the adoption or development of textbooks. Elementary teachers, school/conference/ union administrators, and higher education professors, from Curriculum Area Kindergarten CURRENT STANDARDS across the NAD, are selected to serve on the committees based on their content area expertise. Elementary union associates serve as the chairpersons of the Summer Committees. The responsibilities of the committees include the NEXT STANDARDS REVISION See Subject Area Standards CURRENT TEXTBOOK ADOPTION review of current content area textbooks, and development of textbook recommendations or materials that align with Adventist Education Standards. The Social Studies Multi-grade Implementation and Organizational Notebook (So.S.M.A.R.T.) is an organization manual produced by the North American Division that responds to the needs of teachers who have been challenged to complete a social studies textbook, particularly when teaching multiple grades. Topics for grades 1-4 have been correlated with those of grades 5-8, allowing a teacher with combined grades to teach the same topic across levels.
