speakers - WORLD VEG FESTIVAL
1
MESSAGE
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
Welcome to the 16th Annual World Veg
Fest hosted by the San Francisco Veg
Society. We have many great festivals in
this City by the Bay, but this festival is by
far my favorite. The World Veg Fest is an
opportunity for us to connect with our veg
community, listen to and learn from amazing
speakers, try a variety of delicious foods, and celebrate with friends. These
are exciting times; we are in the midst of a momentous societal shift in the
way we think about our relationship to food. I’m amazed at how many new
vendors and sponsors are participating in the event this year. Whether you
are a volunteer, a veg business, or a foodie, you are an integral part of
building this growing movement and we value your participation!
Many of you may have noticed our recent name change from SF Vegetarian
to SF Veg Society. The board voted in favor of the change to inclusively
accommodate all members on the veg continuum. We promote an all plantbased diet and animal-free lifestyle, but are accepting and supporting
of all who are making a conscious effort to live a life free from harm and
exploitation of animals.
As the newly elected President of the SF Veg Society, I am honored to
succeed Dixie Mahy, who served as SFVS President for over 40 years. She
was one of many brave founding leaders of this movement; promoting a
plant-based diet at a time when the word “vegan” was largely a mysterious
term and “vegetarian” was suspect. Thank-you for your compassionate
efforts and helping to lead the charge in making this planet a better, safer,
healthier, sustainable, compassionate place for all sentient beings.
Greg Rohrbach, President
San Francisco Veg Society

Stanley Elwood Mahy
1925 – 2015
40 YEARS
SFVS Board Member
25 YEARS
Chairman for
Pets and Pals
10 YEARS
Commissioner for
the SF Animal
Control and Welfare
Commission
Stan, dedicated SFVS board member,
accompanied his wife Dixie Mahy (previous
SFVS President) to promote a vegetarian
lifestyle to citizens of the Bay Area for the past
40 years. He died of natural causes at 90 years
of age. Stan, compassionate for animals, also
served as chairman for Pets and Pals for 25
years. He will always be remembered by his
family and friends for his incredible wit and “joi
de vivre.” He was always the life of the party
with his jokes and puns. You will be missed and
remembered by many Stan!
The San Francisco Veg Society (SFVS) is a 501(c)(3),
non-profit and all-volunteer run organization whose
mission is to promote a plant-based lifestyle for
healthy, ethical & sustainable living.
All are welcome to join the Society which was
founded in 1968. SFVS educates the public about
the many benefits of a plant-based lifestyle through
outreach events at health fairs, community events,
vegan potlucks, educational presentations, cooking
demonstrations, movie screenings, social events, and
our own World Veg Festival.
We are funded through memberships and
donations. SFVS distributes a weekly E-Newsletter
with information of events and information. Our
members receive discounts at many local SF Bay
Area establishments and free admission to our
annual World Veg Fest.
Please see sfvs.org for a list of our discount partners.
To become a member, visit SFVS.org or stop by the
SFVS information booth today.
