I Love You More Than Applesauce
by: Jack Prelutsky
I love you more than applesauce,
Than peaches and a plum,
Than chocolate hearts,
And cherry tarts,
And berry bubblegum.
I love you more than lemonade,
And sevenlayer cake,
Than lollipops,
And candy drops,
And thick vanilla shake.
I love you more than marzipan,
Than marmalade on toast;
For I love pies
Of any size,
But I love you the most.

You know this word. We have been learning about base words and
endings. Today, we are going to learn more about base words and their
endings.
flipped
The base word for flipped is flip. What did we have to do to flip before
we added -ed? That's right, some words have to have the last
consonant doubled before we add the endings.
spotted
Spotted is made from the base word spot. What letter did we have to
double before we added the -ed?
Let's look at the words below and see if we can figure out the base
words and the letters we doubled.

Past Tense Verbs
When I know that a verb has happened in the past, I need to
add an ‐ed to the end of the word. Notice the words at the
beginning give you a clue that the sentence has already happened.

Let's write a realistic fiction story together. Remember that realistic
fiction stories are make believe stories that COULD happen in real
life.
In 2005, Mia and Kayden were shopping at the mall. They were looking
for American Girl dolls. First they checked in the little booths at the
mall to see if they were selling any of the dolls. The people at the
booths said they only sold fake hair.
A couple seconds later, they went to the Lego store. But they were
only able to sell them Lego dolls. Kayden and Mia did not want Lego
Dolls, they wanted American Girl dolls.
Later on, they were walking in the mall and they found a store that
sold American Girl dolls. They were so excited! Kayden found a doll
with dark brown hair. Mia found a doll with blonde hair. It was the
best day ever!

Dear First Grade Friends,
I am happy to see all of your smiling faces this morning. I hope
that you all had a great time at the Valentine's Day party
yesterday! This morning, we are going to take a look at a new
comprehension strategy where we make pictures in our minds. In
math, we are going to work more with What's My Rule tables. A
few minutes before that, we are going to visit the Book Fair. Let's
all remember to make good choices today.
Love,
Mr. F.

Visualization making pictures in your mind
Good readers make pictures in their minds
while they are reading. These pictures help
the reader interact with the story and
understand it better. We are going to listen
to a song today. I want you to close your
eyes, relax, and think about the picture or
pictures that form in your minds.

Howdy Partners,
We have a very busy day today! We are going to work on
mental images more before specials today. After gym, you are
going to have a sub for a little bit. Meanwhile, I will be at a
meeting. You are going to work on some phonics with the sub.
In math, we are going to be talking about quarters. We will end
the day working on a realistic fiction story. I know you will all
do your best writing with it today. Let's all remember to be
responsible and safe with our classroom environment today.

Today, you are going to write a realistic fiction story.
Remember that a realistic fiction story is a make‐
believe story that could happen in real life. Your
characters should be made up and remember that
you might want to have a problem and a solution.
You could also try a rule of 3 story. Make sure that
your story is as least 5 sentences, but you might
want to try and shoot for 9 sentences. Always
remember that sentences start with a capital letter
and end with a punctuation mark! Remember to do
your best and be your best.

Thursday
Happy Thursday Room 16,
I can't wait to see all of your amazing thoughts when we visualize with a poem this morning. I think it is a very funny poem. A few minutes before that, we are going to talk about our Amazing Words for this week. In math, we are going to be working some on digital time. I know we did not have a lot of time yesterday with quarters, but we are going to continue practicing both quarters and digital time tomorrow. In writing, we are going to be talking about strategies we can use to sound words out. Let's all remember to respect others with our words and actions.
Love,
Mr. F.

together. While you are listening to the poem, I

My Dog, He Is an Ugly Dog
by Jack Prelutsky
My dog, he is an ugly dog,
he's put together wrong,
his legs are much too short for him,
his ears are much too long.
My dog, he is a scruffy dog,
he's missing clumps of hair,
his face is quite ridiculous,
his tail is scarcely there.
My dog, he is a dingy dog,
his fur is full of fleas,
he sometimes smells like dirty socks,
he sometimes smells like cheese.
My dog, he is a noisy dog,
he's hardly ever still,
he barks at almost anything,
his voice is loud and shrill.
My dog, he is a stupid dog,
his mind is slow and thick,
he's never learned to catch a ball,
he cannot fetch a stick.
My dog, he is a greedy dog,
he eats enough for three,
his belly bulges to the ground,
he is the dog for me.

Strategies to Help Sound Words Out While You Are Writing:
• Clap the syllables and then write sounds you hear in each syllable.
• Say the words slowly and listen for the sounds you hear (beginning,
middle, final).
• Say the words slowly and listen for any parts that you know.
• Use words you know (fun and silly to help with funny).
• Use names you know (William for will).
• Use a rhyming word.
• Use word families to spell related words.
• Think about different spelling patterns that can spell the sound you
hear (ou vs. ow).
• Try it on a practice page and see if it looks right.
• Use a resource in the classroom (word wall, charts, book, dictionary).

Good Morning Superstars,
Is everyone happy that it is Friday this morning? We are going to work
a little more on adding ed to the end of words this morning. Also, we
are going to complete another mental image for a poem by Jack
Prelutsky. I thought you all did a fabulous job yesterday! In math, we
are going to review some of the concepts we have been working on this
week after we take a few senteo assessments. We are going to be
investigating more about liquids this afternoon in science. Let's make
this a fantastic day of learning!

When Tillie Ate the Chili
by Jack Prelutsky
When Tillie at the chili,
she erupted from her seat,
she gulped a quart of water,
and fled screaming down the street,
she coughed, she wheezed, she sputtered,
she ran totally amok,
she set a new world record
as she raced around the block.
Tillie's mouth was full of fire,
Tillie's eyes were red with tears,
she was smoking from her nostrils,
she was steaming from her ears,
she cooled off an hour later,
showing perfect self-control
as she said, "What tasty chili,
I should take another bowl."
