Volume XX VII Number XI A HERO COMES TO MAXFUND By Dr. Bill Suro A n elderly woman lived alone in her apartment except for her constant companion, a dog name Dharma. One day she had a severe stroke and fell to the floor, where she lay for two days totally helpless. Nobody could hear the cries for help except Dharma, and both apartment doors were locked. Finally Dharma did something that under any other circumstance she wouldn’t think of doing. Dharma is a sweet, well mannered, six year old Smooth Fox Terrier cross. She weighs all of thirty-five pounds. She attacked the back door which had a screened section and made a hole big enough for a Doberman to go through. This allowed Dharma to escape to the apartment complex’s fenced in common back yard. Dharma began to howl, not barking, but letting out a mournful, wolf-like howl that she kept up continually. A neighbor responded to Dharma’s distress call and was led to the fallen mistress. The EMTs who responded to the 911 call said that there was no doubt that Dharma had saved her owner’s life. Now the life-saving hero with the engaging personality faces a crisis of her own. Every pet deserves a good home and a happy secure life. This special dog needs a special person to give her a very special forever home. _________________________________ PEANUT UPDATE P eanut has been renamed Mr. Bean. He has adapted to our household very quickly. He is loving his forever home and we feel very lucky to have him. He is next to me curled up under the blankets on the couch as I type. He loves his big sister very much and occasionally plays with his kitty brother who finds pouncing on him the most fun thing in the world. Mr. Bean does beautifully with our daily walking pack which includes four Bernese mountain dogs, Mr. Bean his big sister, one large lab, and a rescue mix named Belle. Long story short he is doing very, very, very well and we love him more than words can express. Love, Beans Mom, Dad, Sister, and Brother. Thank you for helping us complete our family. Ironically, although Dharma’s owner responded well, the stroke left the elderly owner too debilitated to care for a pet. Knowing that MaxFund was a no-kill shelter, a friend called us and pleaded for us to take care of Dharma. He didn’t have to plead; that’s what we do. PAW PRINTS | November 2015 1 AMAZON SHOPPERS! Smile and Help MaxFund! Do you shop on Amazon? If so, you can help MaxFund’s dogs and cats by using the smile.amazon.com link to make your Amazon purchases! Here’s all you need to do: FROM THE WORLD OF GUS By Gus Suro Mom and Dad tell me every day that I am getting better after Gypsy went away for good. They have always called me “goofy.” I think what they think of me now is that I am a little more goofy than I used to be, but they no longer feel that I am going “nuts.” It is coincidental but another factor has been added to the state of my mind. Mom and Dad have a good friend who had a stroke and couldn’t take care of her Chihuahua. The friend is apparently doing well. I don’t know about all that stuff, but I do know that now I have a little (about the size of my head) dog following me around. And he is such a baby. He expects to have human food specially prepared for him, wants to wear a little coat if it is chilly in the morning, has to be physically put outside to do his business if the grass is wet, etc. But, the fact is that I don’t mind all this too much. I actually like him (his name is Monty), even though I had a hard time initially to perceive him as a real dog. In a way it is fun to go from Gypsy being my older sister, to me being a big brother to Monty. It’s a funny world, don’t you think? • Go to www.smile.amazon.com • Enter and save MaxFund (it will show up as “The Maxfund, Inc.”) as your charity • Remember to start from the www.smile.amazon.com link each and every time you shop at Amazon! No, I have not gone off the deep end, but I do have a question for you two leggers. What gives? I thought a Jack-A-Lope was just a funny idea that one of you came up with. However, the other evening I was looking out the back window of my RV and saw several deer. No big deal, right? Well one of them had antlers just like a Jack-A-Lope! So… are there Deer-A-Lopes also? Mom tried to tell me that no, that just meant they were a boy deer, but if that is true, does that make all Jack-A-Lopes boys? Well enough of that for now. I have not stayed at this campground before. It is in a town called LaVeta. I sure hope we come back here again. There were lots of birds, rabbits and deer and someone also said they saw turkeys (not sure what they are). I spent quite a bit of time watching one particular rabbit while Mom and Dad were doing whatever they do when they are not here. It is too bad that I don’t speak rabbit because I am very curious about where they go and what things they see? I have also made another discovery. If I want attention I do not have to just wait for Mom and Dad to sit on the couch. I have learned that if I meow a lot, and just about trip them by rubbing against their legs they will sit down and wait for me to jump up on my raised “lounge area” between them; then I get lots of pets from both of them or I can lay my head on Mom’s arm and sleep while she reads. I may be a slow learner but this is cat-a-riffic! Oh Look! I just made a new word. All this thinking and making new words has really pooped me out. So goodbye for now, I am going to take a nap. She is always looking for ways to help animals. Since she’s too young to volunteer at the shelter she decided to do a coin drive in our neighborhood to be able to donate to MaxFund. She asked some of our neighbors in the Homestead neighborhood in Centennial if they would be willing to donate coins. She counted each baggie herself and overall collected over $211.00! We are very proud of Ellie and her enthusiasm and commitment toward animals. PAW PRINTS | November 2015 8 MEET SOME MAXFUND DOGS By Ilene Johnson TIPPER Tipper is an Australian Kelpie/Cattle dog mix who was born in 2013. This very handsome boy weighs in at about 45 pounds. Tipper came to MaxFund when his owner suffered a stroke, and he was relinquished through no fault of his own. Tipper is the epitome of handsome: he has a gorgeous silver coat, and a smile that brightens everyone’s day. He also has mesmerizing eyes, with a unique golden rim. Tipper loves to play with tug toys and with tennis balls. You would never know it, but he has three legs. One of his back legs had to be amputated, but he can still run like crazy and get around very well. In order for his other back leg to get stronger, he needs to take it a bit easy with regard to physical activity, but that does not prevent him from loving life and being a very happy boy. Tipper is very observant, and loves to take in his surroundings on his walks. In fact, he loves to observe the local wildlife, that is, the squirrels in the neighborhood, and will sit under a tree and study them with those gorgeous, mesmerizing eyes. Tipper is very smart and eager to please. He knows a number of commands: sit, stay, down, and speak, and would love to find a home that will work with him on continued training. He loves being with people of all ages. Tipper will likely do best as the only fur child in his forever home. Please come and meet this resilient, carefree, handsome boy with his mesmerizing eyes. He promises to be a loyal, happy companion, and will bring much joy to his forever home. MEET KENNY Kenny is a dreamy, handsome boy who is a wonderful mix of Jack Russell terrier and Papillon, two very awesome breeds. Kenny was born in 2005. Kenny has beautiful brown eyes that can melt anyone’s heart, and that resemble melting pools of chocolate. He is a happy, energetic boy who loves to run and play. He gets along with other dogs, and loves his playgroups. PAW PRINTS | November 2015 Kenny is an absolute dream to walk. He has excellent leash manners. He is also as patient as a saint; he sits quietly and calmly while you put on his harness, and does the same when you take it off. This little gentleman clearly enjoys going out for a nice walk, and is polite and friendly at all times. Kenny gets along with all people, big and small. He is also housetrained. You can see Kenny in action in his video; click on the link under his bio on the MaxFund website. This wellbehaved boy is looking for his forever home. Can you make this dreamy boy’s dreams come true? _________________________________ SHELDON UPDATE O ur little Sheldon has become a great member of our family. As you can see, he is now a happy 50 lb puppy. We always laugh at the crazy ways he lays during naps. His favorite toys are ones that make crunchy noises (with water bottle inserts) and he goes nuts over peanut butter filled Kongs. He doesn't have his howl yet, but every once in a while his bark cracks and he scares himself, it's hilarious! We have been working with Colorado Dog Academy in Broomfield on trainSheldon ing and he is doing a great job of, as they put it "finding his brain". We are so grateful that he became part of our family! Sandi Auld 9 DONATIONS Thanks to the following people and businesses whose generous contributions help all the animals.
