Highly acclaimed for its versatility and a playful character best understood by riding it, the Versys 650 features engine characteristics, chassis balance and suspension settings all selected to maximise rider enjoyment on the street – and especially when the roads get twisty. Whether commuting, touring, or just riding for fun, the superb control and feedback of the Versys 650 offer a high level of rider confidence in numerous street-riding situations and accommodate a variety of riding styles. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 5 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS Compact Parallel-Twin Engine Tuned for Low-Mid Range Torque Tuning of the 649 cm3 Parallel Twin engine focused on achieving a throttle response that balanced a powerful feeling and a quick-revving character. To optimise performance for everyday riding, care was taken to maximise low-mid range torque. When opening the throttle, riders will notice an extremely smooth and powerful engine character that offers both a high level of control when making minute throttle adjustments and a gratifying rush of acceleration in the lower rpm ranges. Engine updates result in increased high-rpm performance and improved fuel economy. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 6 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS NEW * Intake and exhaust cams with short operating angles move the torque curve toward the lower end of the rpm range. * Plated, linerless cylinder is lightweight, and the narrow cylinder pitch reduces engine width. * To achieve smooth power and torque curves, the exhaust system makes use of a connector tube. * Auto-fast idle system simplifies starting and ensures the catalyser reaches optimum temperature quickly. * Exhaust system is a single-piece construction: header pipes are unitised with the under-engine silencer. The new design contributes to increased high-rpm performance. * Simplified cooling system routes coolant through the engine cases to the cylinder and head to reduce external plumbing. * 180° crankshaft drives a balancer shaft for silky smooth engine operation. * Fuel injection settings for the Versys were selected primarily to deliver a strong powerful feeling when the throttle is opened. NEW * ECU settings match changes to the engine and contribute to improved fuel efficiency. (*Actual mileage varies depending on riding style, riding conditions and vehicle maintenance.) * Oil jets located in the rod big-ends direct oil to the undersides of the pistons for added cooling. NEW * Zero-cross control regulator significantly reduces electrical noise generated when short-circuiting the generator output. * Performance and feel were optimised for the mid-range (3,0006,000 min-1). However, in the low-rpm range (below 3,000 min-1) power delivery is very smooth, and even above 6,000 min-1 power and torque curves continue on without dropping off suddenly. * The above settings result in a performance that favours speeds most used in everyday riding. Corner pick-up is excellent: the powerful midrange delivers a satisfying surge of acceleration and the flat, step-free torque curve and smooth engine response let riders open the throttle with confidence – at any rpm. * Triangular layout of the crankshaft and transmission shafts makes the engine very short front-to-back. * Transmission input shaft, output shaft and change drum are contained in a “cassette”-style package that both allows a compact layout and facilitates transmission maintenance chores. * Semi-dry sump design reduces engine height. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 7 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS Long-travel Suspension & Sporty 17” Wheels Not all streets in the real world are made of circuit-smooth pavement. Road imperfections (bumps, potholes) are far from rare, and some streets are not even paved (such as cobblestone, etc). While the Versys 650 was not designed for off-road use, its long-travel front fork and rear shock were specially selected to cope with any street conditions it may come across, and, along with its 17” wheels, enable aggressive sport riding. Further, the long-travel suspension provides an added dimension of controllability: the ability to consciously control the bike’s front-rear weight transfer gives riders an additional riding element to explore. * The long stroke of the inverted front fork and offset laydown rear shock (F: 150 mm, R: 52 mm) allow experienced riders to actively control the bike’s front-rear weight balance. Purposely increasing braking force to compress the front suspension before a corner reduces the caster, resulting in quicker steering. Alternatively, the rider can opt to brake less aggressively, maintaining the bike’s attitude for smooth, stable turn in. The Versys 650 puts this choice in the hands of the rider, so even the same corner can be enjoyed a number of different ways. * Both the front fork and rear shock combine long travel with stiff springs. Standard off-road-style long-travel suspension allows a bike to fly over bumps and ruts with ease, but this type of suspension was deemed to be too mushy for the kind of riding we wanted to offer. Likewise with sport bike suspension, road holding is superb, but performance is best on (relatively) smooth roads. Combining both long travel and stiff springs yields the benefits of both off-road-style and sport-bike suspension, offering excellent road holding in a wide range of street riding conditions and superb feedback, enabling aggressive sport riding. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 8 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS NEW * Designed based on feedback from highspec models, a new front fork separates its functions between the two fork tubes, with a spring in the left tube and damping cartridge in the right. (Photo 1) 1 NEW * All the adjusters are located at the top of the fork tubes (on the fork caps): preload on the left; rebound damping on the right. Each component need only be adjusted once (rather than once per side), facilitating suspension setup. (Photo 2) 2 * In order to accommodate the longer stroke of the rear suspension, an aluminium gull-type swingarm was chosen. The use of aluminium helps reduce unsprung weight. * In addition to being lighter, using a simple non-link type rear shock offers more direct feedback from the rear wheel, contributing to greater rider “feel.” The excellent feedback clearly communicates the bike’s limits, increasing rider confidence. NEW NEW * While the outer tubes of the ø41 mm inverted front fork are relatively short, they were lengthened 25 mm to provide the ideal stiffness balance to complement chassis settings. NEW * Revised settings help achieve a light handling character as well as good ride comfort. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N * Careful attention to the tuning of the rear suspension ensures the Versys 650 can be ridden aggressively and with confidence through city streets, be they paved, brick or cobblestone, and handle road imperfections like rocks and potholes, etc. The revised settings achieve both light handling and good ride comfort. 9 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS NEW * Remote rear preload adjuster makes it easy for riders to adjust their suspension setup to suit riding with a passenger and/or with luggage. The adjuster is conveniently positioned between the seat and rear shock for easy access. (Photo 3) 3 * 17” wheels front and rear contribute to the bike’s quick steering. The 120 mm front tyre offers an excellent balance of quick steering and front wheel traction. Tyre sizes are as follows: Front: 120/70ZR17M/C (58W) Rear: 160/60ZR17M/C (69W) NEW * New tyres offer increased grip performance in both dry and wet conditions. The new pattern also helps reinforce the road sports image of the new model. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 10 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS Sleek, Flickable Chassis The key to the Versys 650’s sleek chassis is its compact Parallel Twin engine, which allows the use of a slim, lightweight frame. Together with the forward-located seat position and the under-engine muffler, this engine-frame combination delivers a highly centralised mass distribution, which contributes to the highly agile package. High priority was given to achieving chassis settings that deliver a high level of feedback, better enabling the rider to recognise the bike’s limits. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 11 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS * The base frame construction and stiffness balance were set to offer a high level of feedback to the rider. * The highly compact engine and under-engine muffler contribute to mass centralisation. The front cowl (including instrument panel and headlight unit) is mounted directly to the frame, minimising its effect on handling. * The bike’s tall seat height and long-stroke suspension result in a higher CG. The resultant increase in agility makes the Versys even more fun to control. * Chassis dimensions and geometry provide a balance of flickability and high-speed stability. (Although the Versys 650’s performance is optimised for everyday speed range, it is quite happy to oblige riders who wish to travel at higher speeds.) With a wheelbase of 1,415 mm, the Versys 650 can still be considered a “short wheelbase” model, and accordingly it delivers a high level of agility. Likewise the 25o caster and 108 mm trail contribute to its sporty handling. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 12 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS Slim, Upright Riding Position When engineers considered the kind of riding they wanted to offer, and the speed range most often used in everyday riding, a naturally relaxed posture and high controllability care of a slim, upright position with wide handlebars was deemed ideal. Because it would have a great impact on rider control and enjoyment, a substantial amount of development time and effort was devoted to fine-tuning the riding position. * A short-style tank positions the rider closer to the front wheel for increased controllability and offers a greater choice of forward-rearward sitting positions. * The seat’s slim design and the knee grip characteristics of the tank afford good freedom of movement, allowing the riders to change sitting position should they so choose. Thick urethane increases comfort and contributes to a seat height that places the rider in a position of fun controllability. The stepped shape of the two-piece seat also provides support for the rider when accelerating. NEW * Complementing the wide handlebar, the footpegs are positioned low and slightly forward of the seat. Compared to the previous model, the footpegs move 15 mm down and 20 mm forward, offering an even more relaxed position while also enabling sporty riding. * Together, all these points result in a very natural, relaxed position designed to offer the rider a high level of machine control. The upright riding position accommodates a variety of riding styles (lean-in, no-lean, lean-out), broadening the spectrum of riding enjoyment and also offers a high level of comfort, a great benefit for touring. This combination of comfort and control is one of the things that make the Versys 650 so much fun to ride. * The combination of a compact Parallel Twin engine and a narrow, lightweight trellis frame enabled by the offset laydown rear suspension is the key to the Versys 650’s slim riding position. (The slim design also makes it easier for riders to reach the ground with their feet.) 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N * When combined with the long-stroke suspension, the upright riding position and higher seat height offer a commanding view of the road ahead – especially advantageous when navigating city traffic or winding roads in the hills. 13 FUN PACKAGE ON WINDING ROADS Enhanced Brake Performance The Versys 650’s triple petal disc brakes offer superb stopping power and feel at the lever. Updates for the new model deliver both increased brake force and controllability. NEW * Dual ø300 mm petal discs are gripped by new twin-piston calipers. The design of the new calipers contributes to the bike’s sportier image, while new brake pad material offers a stronger initial bite when the brakes are first applied. (Photo 4) NEW * Revised front brake master cylinder features a new lever ratio that contributes to both increased controllability and increased overall brake force. NEW * Larger rear disc measures ø250 mm (previously ø220 mm). The increased controllability and brake force are reassuring when touring or when riding with a heavy load (when the rear brake becomes of greater value). 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 4 NEW * A new rear caliper features revised settings that prioritise controllability. This is complemented by revised rear brake master settings and new brake pad material offering increased controllability as well as contributing to the overall stronger brake force. (Photo 5) 5 * For additional braking reassurance, models with front and rear ABS are available in some markets. NEW * Smaller ABS unit is lighter and takes up less space. 14 RIDE LONGER, RIDE FARTHER RIDE LONGER, RIDE FARTHER For riders who prefer longer excursions, a comfortable seat, relaxed riding position, large-volume fuel tank, protection from the adjustable windscreen and enhanced touring potential make the Versys 650 a very capable touring partner. A number of optional accessories further increase the Versys 650’s touring potential. * Model shown with accessory parts. * Accessories subject to change without prior notice. 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 15 RIDE LONGER, RIDE FARTHER Rider & Passenger Comfort * Along with the comfortable seat, the relaxed position enables long hours in the saddle. * Each part of the two-piece seat was designed with different thickness and firmness of urethane, optimising comfort for both the rider and passenger. * Rubber covers on the passenger footpegs further contribute to passenger comfort. 6 * The comfort afforded by the slim layout (possible thanks to the underengine muffler) also extends to the passenger. A further benefit is that heat is kept away from the passenger. * Layout is such that a passenger can also be comfortably accommodated when the optional panniers and/or top case are attached. (Photo 6) * Pillion position was also designed to offer a natural seating position. The passenger seat/pegs/grab bar relationship was carefully designed to ensure excellent passenger comfort. NEW * Large-size grab bars from the cleanmount system offer passengers an ergonomic grip. 7 (Photo 7) 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 16 RIDE LONGER, RIDE FARTHER Wind Protection & Airflow Management A larger adjustable windscreen helps reduce wind noise and helmet buffeting, creating a serene space behind which to enjoy high-speed riding. And the new cowling design helps direct airflow away and around the rider. NEW * Screen from the Versys 1000 is approximately 1.7 times larger than that of the previous model. Offering increased wind protection, the screen was designed taking into consideration how wind would hit the rider. (Photo 8) NEW * Range of adjustability is now 60 mm, accommodating a greater variety of rider sizes. Conveniently, the screen height can be adjusted without tools (by simply loosening two knobs at the front of the screen). 2 0 1 5 M Y Ve r s y s 6 5 0 M O D E L I N F O R M AT I O N 8 NEW * Wind passages between the upper and side cowls were aerodynamically designed to help reduce air resistance while managing airflow for increased wind protection and comfort.
