PiLON’s Management Academy, a commitment over an eightmonth period, is delivered in partnership with Expressions
who currently is working with Wentworth Club, CITB,
Subway and Specsavers.
The programme has been running from 2008 and more
than 100 managers graduated. It has been designed to align
with the ILM 5 (Institute of Leadership and Management)
qualification requirements therefore enabling successful
certification for all delegates who complete the programme.

INNOVATION, TRAINING
AND VETTING CENTRES
PiLON are Investors in People and Construction News
Awards 2012 winners for Training category.
In 2011 PiLON has opened its first Innovation, Training and
Vetting Centre in Wembley, north London.
The centre is used for testing the skills of PiLON’s new
operatives including Health & Safety training before they
go on site.
PiLON already has a substantial training programme in
place for all personnel as the company wants to ensure
that the right standards are reached by all of its 500-plus
operatives.
An important part of the centre is a workshop where
practical skills such as: plumbing, tiling, flooring, decorating
and plastering are practiced to maintain our high quality
standards.

PILLAR – OUR BESPOKE SOFTWARE
Technology is an aspect that PiLON invests heavily in. We
have developed our internal software, named Pillar. This
gives real time operational information and reports that
hugely increase our procedural efficiency.
Pillar monitors daily the progress of jobs and standards of
work, and provides real-time data that can be fed back to
clients.
Client reports from Pillar utilise KPIs. These are integrated
into Google Maps, depicting the position and project status
of every property.

CASE STUDY
REFURBISHMENT AND BUILDING SPECIALIST
ACCELERATED WORKING IN
COOPER ROAD
Client: Durkan
Period: 6 months
Value: £900,000
exposed steelwork, fitting
new kitchens, bathrooms and
associated fittings, decorating
and second fix carpentry.
The housing specialist PiLON have achieved 100% customer
satisfaction at Cooper Road Willesden. Working as a
subcontractor for Durkan PiLON have completed 38 flats
across four blocks for two separate housing associations.
Although we were tasked with completing this project in 24
weeks, our client had expressed a wish to target completion
in 12 weeks. Due to accurate planning and comprehensive
site management this was duly delivered.
The project, which ran from December 2011 to May 2012,
involved stripping out all newly installed internal finishes,
including all Drylining and suspended ceilings, leaving the
existing internal load bearing partitions. This was necessary
due to a change in the specifications.
Accelerated deliveries also meant that our buying
department had to help constantly and make sure that our
expectations were met along with our site teams checking
the specifications with the Quantity Surveyor and check that
this conformed with manufacturers’ recommendations.
Revised specifications were agreed, issued and priced, then
PiLON supplied and fitted all new suspended ceilings and
Drylined all walls. A taped and jointed finish was applied
to all new ceilings and walls rather than the standard skim
coating previously used on other projects to great success.
An unusual aspect of the project was the complexity of the
specification we had been given in relation to walls and
ceilings. But with a great team effort along with the ability of
our managers to manage an ever changing goal in relation to
the client’s needs, made the project so successful.
In addition to the flats, the communal staircases up to 5
stories high in two of the blocks required a complete strip
of all Drylining and re-installation of plasterboard to revised
specification. Other works included: fire rated boxing in of

COMMUNITY PROJECTS
IN WOKINGHAM
On 11th March 2011 PiLON, together with our client
delivered a “make your own bird box” initiative to a class
of Westende pupils in Wokingham.
The initiative was welcomed by the children who were
very excited to build their own bird box under the
supervision of qualified PiLON supervisors. Waste wood
collected from sites was used for the bird boxes and at the
end of the initiative 30 bird boxes were ready to welcome
little birds.

use the tools and it was a fun making bird
boxes with them.

PiLON also helped its client to renovate the 2nd Woodley
Scouts building in Wokingham.
The building became the headquarters of the 2nd
Woodley Scouts and has slowly been renovated and
updated over the years.
The major works included: plastering, new plumbing,
flooring, electrics, decorating, replacing all fittings and
generally making the facilities much brighter and fit for
purpose, leaving a very necessary community legacy.
