CONTACT THE PRRA TO ARRANGE A FREE SWIM ASSESSMENT TO EVALUATE YOUR CHILD. 5 AQUATIC PROGRAMS - PRE-SCHOOL & RED CROSS SWIM KIDS Starfish (4 to 12 months) / Duck (12 to 24 months) Starfish: An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, along with enjoying songs and play in the water. Duck: For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking with assisted aids. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Sept 13 - Oct 6 Sept 10 - Oct 29 Sea Turtle (24 to 36 months) For toddlers with a parent or caregiver. Swimmers learn through fun games and songs. Combine skills like how to kick with a buoyant object, perform basic floats, glides and kicks. Children will work on floats and changing direction in the water. Endurance is achieved by building strength in flutter kicking and a 15 metre swim. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Mon & Wed Evenings Sept 10 - Oct 29 Sat Mornings Sea Otter (3 to 6 years) Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, along with swimming 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills. Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the Instructor. Swim Kids - Level 4 The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25-metre swim. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Mon & Wed Evenings Sept 10 - Oct 29 Sat Mornings Salamander (3 to 5 years) Children will learn assisted floats and glides, through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water. Children try stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kicking and a 50-metre swim. Preschoolers work on stroke and skills progression. Learning also focuses on good judgment in, on and around the water, entries and floats in deep water. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area. Introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance. Endurance is built through longer front and back swims. Swimmers learn about dolphin kicks and try synchro skills in the water. Whale: Children will learn to swim independently to increase their distance and improve skills in both front and back swims. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75-metre swim. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Sept 10 - Oct 29 Mon & Wed Evenings Sat Mornings 6:30 - 7:00pm 10:30 - 11:00am Swim Kids - Level 7 & 8 Level 7: Building skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for increasing endurance. Endurance is built through timed treading water and a 150-metre swim. Level 8: Introduction to the breastroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300-metre swim. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Sept 10 - Oct 29 Mon & Wed Evenings Sat Mornings 4:00 - 4:45pm 10:00 - 10:45am Swim Kids - Level 9 & 10 Level 9: Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first surface dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer Influences. 6 AQUATIC PROGRAMS - RED CROSS SWIM KIDS & LEADERSHIP Swim Kids 9/10 Continued Level 10: Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet first surface dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. Sept 12 - Oct 5 Sept 10 - Oct 29 Mon & Wed Evenings Sat Mornings 5:00 - 5:45pm 11:00 - 11:45am Teen/Adult - 1 This course is designed for 12 - 17 year olds and adults; no previous swimming experience is required. Basic floatation, movement, breathing skills and an introduction to swim strokes. Classes focus on refining the strokes and improving the cardio vascular fitness endurance a child needs to progress to the next level. Strokes 1: Sept 12 - Oct 5 Mon & Wed Evenings 6:30 - 7:00pm Sat Mornings 9:00 - 9:45am Strokes 2: Sept 10 - Oct 29 PRRA Leadership Courses Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) This course further develops instructional ability by focusing on how to apply the information learned in the AWSI Course to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum (Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and Aqua Adults programs). Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during 12 hrs. of practical teaching experience. Prerequisite: AWSI and minimum of 15 years of age Red Cross Babysitter's Course (Source: The Benefits Catalogue Canadian Parks & Recreation Association) Prerequisite: minimum 11 years of age Register and Review PRRA Programs & Services from the convenience of your home! This course focuses on teaching participants the essential skills needed to be a responsible child-care giver and the steps necessary to take in emergency situations. They will be armed with the proper knowledge and will feel confident when it comes to the needs and safety of children of all ages. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Canadian Red Cross babysitter's certificate. Bronze Medallion (CPRB) includes Emergency First Aid & CPRA Bronze medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue - education - judgment - skill and fitness. Provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the lifesaving techniques of rescue breathing and emergency care. The PRRA offers access online for our customers to register for programs including swimming lessons and leadership courses. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or minimum 13 years of age . The Viterra Fitness Centre is 4000 sq. ft. filled with user friendly equipment to challenge you! If you are a beginner or novice there is everything you need to achieve success, resulting in healthy and active lifestyle! The Portage CO-OP Walking track offers a comfortable setting for a walk or jog with 210 metres of impact absorbing track. With two one metre-wide lanes, the track can accommodate users of all ages and abilities. 6 Treadmills, 5 Elliptical, 2 Steppers, 6 Stationary Bikes, 1 Rower, 10 Weight Machines, The Walking Track is available free of charge Monday to Friday 4 - 9 pm & Weekends after 9am! However users should note that the facility will be open to the general public during these times and there may be slight inconveniences for those patrons using the track. Register as an individual or as a group (if you wish to play on the same team as someone you know). On September 14th and 21st, come at 6:00pm to review the rules of the game and learn how to play from experienced players. Cost is$15. If you make at least 3 of the 4 games you will get a free Frisbee on the last night. Bring payment to the first game. 10 SHINDLEMAN AQUATIC CENTRE SCHEDULE These Coaching Academies bring professional development sessions led by expert presenters right to the coaches and players in the Central Plains.
