M
exico and Central America are home to a rich tapestry of cultures from the agrarian indigenous tribes that live much
as they have done to the African descendants that have called it home since the 17th century whilst the heavy Spanish
influence can be felt in the charming colonial towns dotted throughout. Dating back some 4,000 years, the ancient Maya
culture has left its mark in the form of remarkable ruins of temples reached by towering staircases and intricately carved
stone structures that are slowly being claimed by the sultry jungle.
The Caribbean islands are famous for their magnificent climate, spectacular beaches, idyllic seascapes and diverse flora and fauna. The
unrivalled warm, calm waters provide the perfect environment for the colourful underwater coral gardens that attract divers and snorkellers from all over the world. The vibrant cultures and exotic natural highlights of the Caribbean make any trip completely unforgettable. A visit to one or more of the islands – either exclusively or as an extension to a trip to Latin America - is a perfect way to relax and
unwind.
To help you get the best out of your trip, we have a team of well travelled and enthusiastic travel consultants to will suggest the best
known attractions and the less travelled places…
Kind regards,
Ed Garcia & Hanna Shilo
Co-Managing Directors.

Responsible Travel
Our Tours & Services Explained
Escorted Tours:
We have two multi-country Escorted
Tours with fixed departure dates:
The 24 Day Small Group Tour of
South America and The 22 Day
South America Cruise and Tour. Both
tours will give an introduction to the
highlights of this amazing continent
with the possibility to extend to other
areas for a more in-depth experience. These tours require a minimum
of 8 adult paying passengers to
have the same escort from day 1
to the last day. Should there not be
a minimum of persons participating, the tour still goes ahead with
local bilingual guides in every place.
These tours are offered in tourist and
tourist superior class hotels to suit
your budget.
Independent Tours:
With weekly departures, our independent tours are fully guided by
local expert English speaking guides
and assisted from the time you arrive in South America, throughout
your stay, to the time you leave.
These tours are customizable to suit
your needs and preferences. These
tours are offered in tourist, tourist
superior and first class hotels to suit
your budget.
Specific Country Tours
For a second visit to South America
or for a more in-depth experience
and immersion to the local culture
and/or nature, we have a section of
tours and programs classified by country. This option is mainly for people to
really explore a country or area more
intimately.
Hotels
We usually use accommodation from
3 to 5 stars and in some remote locations we use best available properties.
The hotels we choose for our tours
have private facilities, are centrally
located, close to the attractions,
restaurants and whenever possible, full
of local character as we believe this
makes a huge difference to your travel
experience.
Tourist Class Hotels (3 Stars)
These properties deliver a broad range
of amenities that exceed above-average accommodation needs. Good
quality service, design and physical
attributes are typically fit for purpose to
match guest expectations.
Tourist Superior Hotels (4 Stars)
These hotels achieve a great guest
experience. A wide range of facilities and superior design qualities are
typically complemented by service
standards that reflect the varied and
discerning needs of the guest.
First Class Hotels (5 Stars)
Properties that typify luxury across all
areas of operation. Guests will enjoy
an extensive range of facilities and
Responsible Travel
comprehensive or highly personalised services. Properties at this
level will display excellent design
quality and attention to detail.
Our Tours & Transfers
In line with our policy of practising
responsible tourism, who better to
show you than someone born and
raised in the area. A local guide
has an understanding of the culture
with great connections within the
community and an insider view of
the region. Besides historical facts,
our local guides will point you in the
right direction of hidden highlights
and more…
Our Seat In Coach Services (SIC or
SIB) are the basis of the land services of our independent tours. The
services will be shared with other
travelers so you can save. Your services will be led by English speaking
guides unless otherwise requested or
specified.
Our Private Services are provided
exclusively for you and your travelling party. These services are personalised to your needs whenever
possible. In some remote locations,
a driver only service may be used
to cut the costs down. This will be
advised in your program.
What is responsible travel?
In recent years ‘Responsible Travel’ has become a very familiar term, but what
is it? To put it simply, it is our responsibility to ensure we offer holidays that are
sensitive to the environments and communities you visit, and it is your responsibility as a traveller to ensure you tread carefully, respecting local laws and
customs and avoiding any negative impact on the local environment.
Our responsibility
To us, Responsible Tourism is nothing new. Ever since we started in 1999, we
have believed that it’s our responsibility to do all we can to protect the places
to which we send clients and to ensure that as much as possible of the money
spent filters through to local economies.
We, and everyone we ask to deliver services to you, take pride in offering
responsible holidays with minimal impact on the environment, support for
community development and ensuring good working conditions. We relay
our RT policy to all of our suppliers and they in turn sign an agreement of best
practice.
How you can get involved
Clients often ask us what they can do to ensure they travel responsibly. The
following is best practice:
Before you go..
Learn something about the countries you plan to visit to find out about the
culture, politics, geography, religion and local customs.
Try and remove unnecessary packaging from any products you are taking
with you, and dispose of it at home first. Recycling has yet to really take off in
Latin America so the less you leave the better!
Whilst on your travels ..
In the market…
Buy local handicrafts and support local artisans. When bargaining, remember
that a small saving for you could make a big difference for the seller. Don’t
buy ancient artifacts or anything made with endangered animals or plants
e.g. hardwoods, shells, exotic feathers, coral, furs or eggs.
Eating out...
Choose smaller local restaurants, bars and cafes where possible so your
money benefits local people. Sample the local cuisine using local produce.
Out and about...
Remember to respect local traditions and culture. Ask permission before photographing indigenous people and events, particularly religious processions.
Ask for an address and send photos to the people you photographed, many
won’t have photos of their families.
Simple gifts for children, such as crayons, balloons, colouring books or even
a mini football can bring a huge smile to a child’s face. Resist handing out
sweets as dental care is, mostly, poor. Giving money to children on the street
only encourages begging; instead consider donating to schools or local conservation or charitable organisations.
Speaking with people…
Why not try and learn some of the lingo? Speaking a few words of the local
language, even if it is just ‘hola’ or ‘gracias’, will change the way people react
to you. You’ll get a much warmer welcome and this in turn can enrich your
experience and interaction with the local people.
Traditions and ways of life differ greatly across the cultures of Latin America. As
a rule of thumb, people in lowland regions are more gregarious and relaxed
than those who live a more austere life in the mountains, and many Latin
Americans are modest and camera-shy.
Please try to be sensitive to local customs. The pace of life outside the main
cities is slower than in Australia, and you may have to draw on your reserves
of patience in some situations. There is still widespread poverty in many countries: you may like to consider taking clothes, shoes or toys with you that you
might be happy to leave behind.

Minimise your environmental impact…
Stick to the paths and walkways whether you are in the jungle, on a mountain
trek or in a Mayan ruin. They are there for your safety and also to preserve the
local wildlife and help to avoid further erosion of the landscape.
In your hotel…
Clean water is a precious resource, so use it sparingly. Try and take quick
showers rather than baths as this helps to save water. Advise your hotel that
you don’t need towels or sheets laundered daily. This can save on water and
energy. Conserve electricity by switching off lights, air-conditioning or heating
when you leave your room.
Use environmentally friendly shampoos and detergents, particularly when
you are outside big cities in ‘the wild’ and your shower water is going to end
up in a river! Try to reuse and refill your drinking water bottles where possible.
Many hotels have water ‘garafons’ filled with treated ‘agua potable’ that is
perfectly safe to drink. If your hotel does not, you could leave a suggestion
that they provide one.

WHEN TO GO
Mexico is enjoyable year-round, but October
to May is generally the most pleasant time to
visit. The May-September period can be hot
and humid, particularly in the south, and inland temperatures can approach freezing
during December-February.
Facilities are often heavily booked during Semana Santa (the week before Easter) and
Christmas/New Year, the peak domestic travel periods. Mexico’s climate has something
for everyone: it’s hot and humid along the
coastal plains, and drier and more temperate at higher elevations inland (Guadalajara
or Mexico City, for example).

Try to avoid Mexico’s southern coast between July and September – the resorts are
decidedly soggy and jam-packed, as JulyAugust is also the peak holiday months for

Copper Canyon 5D/4N
When people talk about the Copper Canyon, they are
referring to a section of the Sierra Madre of northwestern
Mexico known as the Sierra Tarahumara (after the indigenous people who live there). The area was formed through
violent volcanic uplifting followed by the gradual process of
erosion that carved a vast network of canyons into the soft
volcanic stone. In geological time, it’s much newer than the
Grand Canyon.
Crossing the Sierra Tarahumara is the famed Chihuahua
al Pacífico railway. Acclaimed as an engineering marvel,
the 624km (387-mile) railroad has 39 bridges -- the highest is
more than 300m (984 ft.) above the Chinipas River, and the
longest is about.5km long and 86 tunnels, including one that
stretches more than 1.5km long. It climbs from Los Mochis,
at sea level, up nearly 2,425m (7,954 ft.) through some of
Mexico’s most magnificent scenery - thick pine forests, jagged peaks, and shadowy canyons - before descending to
the city of Chihuahua.

WHEN TO GO
Panama’s main tourist season is from December to April which is the dry season. During
the rainy season the weather is hot and humid making the air quite oppressive. Rainfall
occurs in short sudden downpours which help
to refresh the air. The dry season is generally
the most comfortable time for any active
hiking and the Darién Gap can be only be
crossed at this time. Carnaval is celebrated
in Panama City and the Península de Azuero
each year, the weekend before Ash Wednesday and Panama City hosts on of the largest
in the world.

WHEN TO GO
There isn’t a bad time to visit Cuba. The hot,
rainy season runs from May to October with
occassional hurricanes from August to October but winter (December to April) is the island’s peak tourist season, when planeloads
of Canadians and Europeans arrive in pursuit
of the southern sun. Cubans take their holidays in July and August, so this is when the
local beaches are most crowded. Christmas,
Easter and the period around 26 July, when
Cubans celebrate the anniversary of the revolution, are also very busy.

MUST DO
There is a non-ending list of things
to do, amongst our favorite ones
are: Patronising “paladares” or

Hammel Laneway, following Fidel
Castro’s footspets, visiting the Valley of Sugar Mills in Trinidad.
Explore the towns of Barahona,
Santiago, Holguin, Camaguey,
Trinidad and Cienfuegos, join a
carnival conga line in Santiago or
celebrate “las parrandas” at the
end of the year in the small town
of Remedios and do not forget to
visit a tobacco farm.
Cuba is the largest of all the Caribbean islands and one of the most fascinating. It has a unique and eventful history,
mirrored in the outpourings of its rich culture of music, dance, and socio-political innovation. The island also has
stunning landscapes, from the unique limestone plateau scenery west of Havana through tropical plantations to the
rugged mountains and forests of the Sierra Maestra in the east. Cuba is liberally dotted with pristine sandy beaches

WHEN TO GO
Jamaica is becoming more and more a
year-round destination due to its varied climates compared to any other Caribbean island. Along the seashore, where most visitors
congregate, the island is air-conditioned by
north-easterly trade winds, and temperature
variations are surprisingly slight. Coastal readings average between 22°C and 31°C yearround. It has two major seasonality amongst
others: High season is from mid-December
through mid-April as it is when visitors fleeing
cold north winds crowd the island.

WHEN TO GO
There are two distinct tourist high seasons in
the Dominican Republic, the summer months
of July and August, when travellers from the
northern hemisphere fill the resorts and all but
the most out-of-the-way beaches, and the
winter season between December and late
February, when the Dominican climate is at
its optimum, having cooled down a little from
the summer.

Punta Cana Beach
MUST DO
There are so many things to do in
the DR, amongst our favorite ones
are: Visit a tobacco and rhum
factory in Santiago, drive along
the Northern Coast from Puerto
Plata to Samana, try some surfing in Cabarete, take a plunge in
one of the Damajagua Waterfalls
or just wind down in the Samana
Peninsula.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC TOURS
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with its lesser developed cousin, Haiti, and enjoys a year-round
summer, with sugar-white beaches shaded by palm trees, crystalline waters teeming with rainbow-hued fish, and
Spanish colonial history stretching back 500 years. Small fishing villages attract locals and backpackers, while larger
all-inclusive resorts appeal to couples and families. Spicy food, spicier merengue, and a leisurely lifestyle draw more
travelers to the Dominican Republic every year.
Handpicked Properties
Casa Colonial Pto. Plata
Casa de Campo Romana
In the East, visit Altos de Chavon
cultural complex, enjoy the crystal clear waters of Punta Cana
or the Dominicus Beach in La Romana. If you are more adventurous explore the Western part of
the Island: Barahona and Lake

Driving along the DR’s rural byways, past coconut sellers
and men playing dominoes, thick jungly brush often gives
way to the idyllic ocean vistas the country is known for. But
for us, the country’s distinctive appeal lies in everyday village scenes, when Dominicans’ informal hospitality can be
appreciated.
Come enjoy a unique adventure at the Dominican Republic. For eight days and seven nights experience a journey
where you can live history and nature full of colors.
Here you’ll find 500 years of history, beautiful water cascades, river rapids and the most spectacular virgin beaches
all in one place.
