We hope you agree that the topics of the plenary lectures and symposia encompass the latest trends in laboratory medicine. Focusing on the congress theme "Your future in patient care", you will hear from leading experts about surprising trends, technologies and innovations. The same will hold true for the workshops organised by our partners from industry. We have done our best to offer you the very best social events. The Concertgebouw building with its famous acoustics will be our domain on the Monday evening. On Wednesday there will not be just a party, but the party . We invite you to celebrate with us the 60th anniversary of the Netherlands Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (NVKC) in the Beurs van Berlage, a landmark of early 20th century Dutch architecture. Gerard Sanders President EUROMEDLAB 2007 Committee We will do our utmost to ensure you have a successful and enjoyable time at EUROMEDLAB 2007. 2007 And Amsterdam itself, with its unique architecture, historic canals and fine hospitality, guarantees the best surroundings for our European meeting. It is you, the delegates, who will make the congress. The scientific and social interactions between colleagues are the best reasons to be in Amsterdam in the first week of June 2007. Don't delay. Mark the dates in your calendar and register now! Huib Storm President NVKC Looking forward to welcoming you, Gerard Sanders President EUROMEDLAB 2007 Committee. This conference should be a high priority for anyone connected with clinical laboratory computing or the use of laboratory results in other hospital systems. The two world-class keynote lectures will be supported by speakers who are experts in their field to provide an invaluable insight into current and future trends. The excellent conference facilities at the Leeuwenhorst will provide an ideal setting for this important event. www.ams2007.org/CCL EBLM Pre-C Congress Course Amsterdam VU Medical Centre - 3 June 2007 based Laboratory This short course on E v i d e n c e -b M e d i c i n e is organized under the auspices of the Committee on Evidence-based Laboratory Medicine (CEBLM) of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). This workshop is a one-day condensed version of the 4-day long IFCC/FESCC Course on Evidence-based Laboratory Medicine, held in Budapest in 2005 in association with experts of the Cochrane Diagnosis and Screening Tests Method Group. This international course aims at disseminating the basic principles and methodology of evidence-based laboratory medicine (EBLM). Key objectives of the course are to help participants to: · improve their ability to formulate questions, · systematically find the evidence about diagnostic interventions, · evaluate the evidence about diagnostic interventions. Participants will obtain skills in systematically · formulating questions and designing studies, · searching for the evidence, · critically appraising the evidence, · interpreting the evidence. This course is primarily designed for laboratory professionals with special interest in evidence-based laboratory medicine. The number of course participants is limited to 50 persons. Past experience in EBM or EBLM is an www.ams2007.org/EBLM advantage. ABBOTT Satellite Symposium Abbott, Amsterdam - 2/3 June 2007 A b b o t t D i a g n o s t i c s is sponsoring Satellite Symposium on June 2nd and 3rd on New Marker Technology and the Latest Developments in Clinical Management. Topics to be covered in the workshops will be Cardiac, Hepatitis, Pregnancy, Renal Disease, Hematology, Cancer and Laboratory Automation. www.ams2007.org/ABBOTT IFCC/EQALM Post-C Congress Symposium Amsterdam RAI - 7/8 June 2007 A Q (Education and A joint meeting of I F C C / E M D / C -A Management Division/ Committee on Analytical Quality) and E Q A L M (European Committee for External Quality Assurance Programmes in Laboratory Medicine) is proposed to involve stakeholders in the principal areas of both international standard setting for the quality management and accreditation of laboratory medicine and EQA service provision, and education of laboratory professionals, EQA providers and industry in metrology, measurement uncertainty and traceability. The role of educational EQA in supporting and enhancing IFCC standardisation initiatives and the work of JCTLM will be emphasised, and the creation of an International Forum to bring together all stakeholders to improve the trueness, comparability and clinical effectiveness of laboratory medicine investigations will be proposed. Laboratory Medicine continues to face many analytical challenges, associated mainly with poor between-method comparability arising from lack of standardisation due to inadequate implementation of metrological principles (trueness, uncertainty, traceability) and insufficient use of reference methods and materials. Increased use of 'point of care' systems with uncertain quality management and unproven comparability with laboratory systems, is an additional area of concern. These challenges require concerted and co-ordinated action by all stakeholders, including Governments, regulatory organisations, educational and professional bodies, metrology and standards institutions and the diagnostics industry, as well as laboratory professionals, clinicians and patients. Stakeholders require appropriate knowledge and an appreciation of their role in all the processes which underpin the production of an analytically valid result with optimal trueness and fitness for purpose. w w w . a m s 2 0 0 7 . o r g / E QAUL M EUROM M EDLAB Amsterdam 2 007 - 3/7 June 2 007 - www.ams22 007.org 17 A Promise for Life Proud to be a Principal Sponsor of the 2007 IFCC Featuring satellite symposiums June 2nd and 3rd on “New Marker Technology, and the Latest Developments in Clinical Management”. The average temperature is around 20°C. Occasionally some showers can be expected. Money matters The currency of The Netherlands is the Euro (€). Major credit cards are widely accepted, but it is better that you always check before sitting down to dinner...unless you like doing the dishes! There are plenty of cash dispensers (ATMs) throughout the city, which are open 24 hours a day. Normal banking hours are from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays. Tips are not obligatory, but they are welcome. The standard is 5-10%, but for smaller bills in cafés and bars it's customary to round up to the nearest whole number. Banknotes of € 100 or more are not generally welcome. Emergency services Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire brigade. For non-urgent police matters, call 0900-8844 (€0.20/minute). Telephone Many public phones only accept prepaid phone cards (available at newsstands) or credit cards. Those making calls to Amsterdam from outside the country need to know that the country code is +31 and the area code is 20. If calling Amsterdam from within The Netherlands, dial 020 as the area code before the subscriber number.
