About this Guide
This guide serves a dual purpose. The first is to guide the genealogical community to facilities close to
them that have genealogical collections. The second purpose is to aid those searching for their California
ancestry to information that will further their research.
It is impossible to uncover every source of material when compiling a guide such as this. The goal,
therefore, was to complete a guide that was as up to date as possible and at the same time give you ideas
on how to find more information on your own.
We have included library facilities that indicated they have a genealogical collection or an extensive
historical collection for their area. If your town’s library is not included, you still might want to contact
them and ask if they have any relevant information.
We have included historical societies with and without museums. These societies can be a gold mine of
information on the locality your ancestor lived in. We also included some historical sites, if they
indicated they had a visitors center. The docents in these facilities are usually knowledgeable and happy
to answer some questions.
We have included genealogical societies with and without libraries. Often these societies provide the best
research help in locating records of your ancestors.
We have included contact information to obtain vital records at the county level . Be sure to read the
information on how privacy legislation has affected this process. The county recorder is also the contact
for land records in the county.
We have included Superior court contact information. This is where you will look for probate records,,
civil and criminal court records, and most often divorce records
If you have internet access, it is well worth your time to visit websites, which have been included
whenever they were found. You will find some great indexes, the most up to date contact information,
and finding aids to help you get started
Throughout we have included various information to fill the blank spaces left on pages. You will find
hand drawn maps and some pictures from the Richard Schellens Collection which is a part of the
holdings of the Redwood City Library History Room [See San Mateo County]. This a another great
resource for finding your California Ancestors. The 180 binders of information are currently being
indexed by the San Mateo County Genealogical Society with the help of Societies through the state.
You will also find references to other online finding tools for your California Ancestors. Although they
are on specific county pages, most are either statewide resources that should be checked for all California
ancestors, or samples of types of websites to look for in your research county.
Although this isn’t intended to be a bibliography of printed sources, there is a short list of materials that
aare worth checking out while researching your California ancestors.

Privacy Laws
and their affect on obtaining
Birth, Death & Marriage RECORDS
Guidelines for obtaining vital records in California have changed. Effective July 1, 2003, the California
Health and Safety Code, Section 103526, will permit only authorized individuals to receive certified
copies of birth and death RECORDS. Those who are not authorized by law to receive certified
copies will receive certified copies marked "INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO
ESTABLISH IDENTITY."
In the case of birth RECORDS, the new law describes an authorized person as:
!
!
!
!
!
The registrant or a parent or legal guardian of the registrant.
A party entitled to receive the record as a result of a court order, or an attorney or a licensed
adoption agency seeking the birth record in order to comply with the requirements of Section
3140 or 7603 of the Family Code.
A member of a law enforcement agency or a representative of another governmental agency, as
provided by law, who is conducting official business.
A child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or domestic partner of the registrant.
An attorney representing the registrant or the registrant's estate, or any person or agency
empowered by statute or appointed by a court to act on behalf of the registrant or the registrant's
estate.
In the case of death RECORDS, the new law describes an authorized person as:
•
•
•
•
•
•
A parent or legal guardian of the registrant.
An attorney representing the registrant or the registrant's estate, or any person or agency
empowered by statute or appointed by a court to act on behalf of the registrant or the registrant's
estate.
A funeral director ordering certified copies of a death certificate on behalf of an individual
specified in paragraphs (1) to (5), inclusive, of subdivision (a) of Section 7100 of the Health and
Safety Code.

Alameda County Coroner's Bureau has reports going back to some time in the 1800's. Not sure if they have them from
1853, when Alameda was formed or not. But the cost is $5.00, for them to look and copy the report.

Klamath County - Created in 1851 from northern part of Trinity County. The area was mostly
mining land, and apparently its leadership was fairly corrupt. The county was abolished in 1875, and
parts of the county went to Del Norte, Humboldt, Siskiyou and Trinity Counties.
.............
Mt. Diablo County - Created in 1850; changed to Contra Costa County.
Patuah County - Created on paper in 1852, on land that was to have been ceded to California in what
later became Nevada. Carsonville would have been its county seat. California never got the land, so the
county (still only on paper) was abolished in 1859.
