The students voted out of the top ten on that Thursday. At half time during the game all 10 girls walked out on the field to hear who won. The winner was Susie Byrd! Susie received her crown and wore it at the dance at Saturday. Becky Sheerer got runner up. PAGE 2 Horoscopes by Denzie White Aires- There's a strong focus on being cooperative, supportive, and polite this month, but you could have difficulty turning your attention to getting along with others. Uranus is still in your sign, giving you a willful and independent spirit. You won't care what other people think, and you may act erratically. You could be involved in a passionate love affair at the start of the month, but it may not last unless you're willing to make a commitment. You can make a new start by entering into a true partnership after the New Moon in Libra on October 15. Taurus-Venus is in Leo and your sector of home and family until October 3. This planet will help smooth over any issues, but you'll have to make an effort if you want to keep the peace. Mars is in Scorpio until October 6. During that time you could be argumentative and defensive when dealing with your partner or a member of the public. A Full Moon in your sign on October 29 will bring out your insecurities. You could overindulge if you feel down or stressed. Be careful - eating or drinking too much could compromise your health. Gemini-You'll have a positive outlook and be open to new opportunities with Jupiter in your sign all month. It will be retrograde as of October 4, however, so you may not completely trust your instincts. Several planets and a New Moon in Libra will bring out your social and romantic side. You'll feel attractive and you'll be popular. Others will find you engaging. There will be plenty of opportunities for romance. Mars moves to Sagittarius on October 6 to bring tension and stress in your close relationships. You could be irritable and defensive with your romantic partner. Cancer- Life at home or time spent dealing with your family will require more patience and cooperation than usual. Others might need advice or help and you may have to make yourself available. You're usually loving and caring, but some individuals might require extra attention and be a drain on your time, energy, and resources. A New Moon in Libra on October 15 will help you develop stronger people skills and the ability to create peace and harmony despite obstacles. Uranus in Aries complicates matters and brings situations where you'll have to choose between career and personal commitments. Leo- Venus is in your sign for a few days at the beginning of the month. You'll feel attractive and be warm and affectionate with others. This planet could also bring a fleeting romantic connection with someone new. Planets and a New Moon in Libra will bring pleasant social events in your neighborhood or with your extended family. Teamwork will be involved if you're hosting a party or invited to a gathering. You may spend time with people who share your hobbies or interests. Mars is in Scorpio until October 6 and causing tension at home or with your family. Virgo- Love planet Venus moves to Virgo on October 3 to help you get along with others and be more loving and accepting of yourself. Neptune is opposite in Pisces and acting in concert with Venus to bring out compassion and empathy. All relationships should go smoothly, especially romantic ones, but you might not be realistic about your partner. Mars moves to Sagittarius on October 6 and will stir up tension at home or within your family. You could be argumentative, irritable, and demanding. Jupiter in Gemini all month will bring career options, but you could find it hard to choose among them. Libra- Several planets in your sign will make this a memorable month. You'll feel confident, strong, and curious. You'll start new projects and have a fresh attitude. One of the planets is Saturn, however, so be cautious before jumping into anything. A New Moon in Libra on October 15 will bring out your natural talents and qualities. You'll be happy and focused on building your relationships for about a month. However, Uranus in Aries will bring a streak of independence and a desire for freedom. You'll have to balance your own interests with a need to please others. Scorpio- Mars is in your sign until October 6, giving you plenty of energy and vitality. You'll be fearless and eager to take action and start new projects. You'll be more scattered after Mars moves to Sagittarius. Neptune in Pisces lends an emotional and spiritual connection to someone you're involved with or interested in romantically. Venus is in Leo until October 3, which means you may be perceived as charming but superficial, especially when networking for your career. A Full Moon in Taurus on October 29 could make close relationships stressful for a few days. Try not to be demanding or difficult. Sagittarius- This will be a powerful and action-packed month for you. Mars moves to your sign on October 6. You'll be full of energy and eager to begin new projects. Several planets and a New Moon in Libra will bring a chance to socialize with friends and groups of likeminded individuals. Your get-togethers will be lively and interesting and give you a chance to catch up. You'll be popular, charming, and a good conversationalist. Jupiter in Gemini and opposite your sign could bring power struggles with your partner. Ultimately, you'll be respectful, supportive, and good to each other. Capricorn- Pluto in your sign will continue to transform you and make you restless. Venus moves to Virgo on October 3, and you may have a chance to travel with friends or a loved one. You'll also feel creative this month. You may try to do some writing. Mars is in Scorpio for a few days at the beginning of the month, and during that time you'll be busy with friends and groups that you're involved with. Several planets in Libra will help you expand your career by networking, but you'll have to make an effort to be charming and social. Aquarius- Venus is in Leo until October 3, bringing harmony and good vibes if you're in a relationship. You'll be passionate and affectionate with your partner. Planets and a New Moon in Libra will bring good times with friends and loved ones. You may travel together or collaborate on a project. Communication will improve and you'll share ideas and information on a regular basis. With Mars in Scorpio until October 6 and Mercury there most of the month, you can make new career connections. You must be proactive, however, and take a few risks in order to effect change. Pisces- Neptune has moved retrograde to the cusp of your sign. You have been and will continue to be reflective. You'll have a strong need to be alone in peace and quiet. Progress will be made internally, but not so much in the outside world. You'll find it hard to focus and be productive for a while. However, this will be a highly creative time. Jupiter in Gemini could make dealing with your family difficult. You may feel overwhelmed by pressure from parents or other close relatives. Venus moves to Virgo on October 3, helping you to have good relations with your romantic partner. There is games like pool, connect four, ballono, and many, many more. On all of them you can play with your friends or with people around the whole wide world. You can play as a guest or you can sign up for an account and get money and buy things for your character and page. Also you can chat with your friend while you play or in chat rooms. It is so much fun and you can play it for hours and hours. It is a gaming site with a bunch of games and chat rooms for different ages. “Belittling others for a laugh makes you the brunt of your own joke.” Minecraft By Nicholas Cosentino Minecraft is the most impressive sandbox you will ever see! You start by doing the basics, “Punching a Tree.” You take the wood and make tools and then your journey begins, you find ore and fight monsters, if you are stuck outside during night time get ready to fight. You can mine and discover caverns, ravines, and dungeons. Then you craft your items you found into more powerful tools. You can play with your friends to conquer the world and battle pesky invaders. This game is always changing with the help of Notch and Jeb. You will never get bored, because there are so many things you need to do. This game has endless possibilities, so you need to discover every nook and cranny and find Dishonored By Jordan Thompson Dishonored is a stealth action adventure game for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC that came out on October 9th. times You play as Corvo, who is a bodyguard for the Empress of their country. She is murdered, and Corvo is framed for it, so he becomes an assassin to get revenge on those who have wronged him. He is assisted in this by a group of people called the “loyalists”, as well a mysterious figure called “The Outsider”, who gifts him magical abilities. You are given an artifact to help you find “Runes” which you spend on the powers you want. Unlike most games with this type of ability gain system, you can’t actually obtain all of the abilities, so you have to carefully decide which skills will be most useful to your play style. An interesting feature of this game is how though you are an assassin, you can make it through the entire game without killing a single person. It is significantly more difficult to do it this way, but there are rewards for doing so. The ending of the game changes depending on the “chaos level”, of which the number of people you’ve killed is a major factor. The more people you’ve killed, the higher your chaos level is. The chaos level also affects other aspects of the game, like the number of man-eating rats around the world. Think Pink By: Allison Barker If you’ve been roaming through the middle school hallways, you’ve probably noticed the door surrounded by pink breast cancer ribbons. The ribbons are around the door of room 16, Miss. Korbar’s classroom, in support of raising awareness during the month of October. October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The ribbons are covered with facts about Breast Cancer, written by ninth grade health students. Not only do these ribbons hang outside of her door but you can also find NORTHGATE NEWS VOLUME V, ISSUE II PAGE 5 Movie/Book Reviews LOOPER By Luke Shaffer Looper is a new 2012 action film about a young adult, Joe, that is a part of a mafia company in 2072, where instead of killing their targets in the present, they send them 30 years back in their life, to be killed by a looper. When the company wants to end a looper contract, they send the future self of the looper back to the past to be killed by their former selves, which is known as “closing the loop.” Directed by Rian Johnson, Joe is faced with the job of “ending the loop,” in which the mob sends his older self. Joe then needs to kill his former self, but if he kills his older self, he will die. What will happen next? You can find out! Safe Haven By Lauren Wanat Safe Haven is a great book written by Nicholas Sparks. The novel follows Katie, a woman on her journey as she escapes an abusive marriage. She arrives in a small town in North Carolina. She tries to avoid relationships which only adds to the mystery about her appearance. The book has a surprising twist at the end that you will never expect. This book is full of drama, suspense, and romance. I would recommend this book to anyone. The Amazing Spiderman By Cassady Thornton The Amazing Spider-man arrived in theaters on July 3, 2012. Spider-man is played by Andrew Garfield and his lover, Gwen Stacy, is played by Emma Stone. The movie is about Peter Parker and how he became Spider-man and battles The Lizard. I would recommend this movie to people who love superhero movies and lots of action. Hunger Games By Veronica Belllin The Hunger Games is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is based on the book of the same name, and it is a great adaptation. It is about a girl Katniss Everdeen, who goes into an arena with 23 other kids to fight to the death for the sake of entertainment. She volunteers in her younger sister’s place and she has to rely on her sharp instincts. She has to make decisions in the arena which pit survival against humanity and life against love in order to return home to District 12. It is a great movie and I recommend it to people of all ages. The tickets came out on October 1st and already grossed 1.17 million dollars in presales. Recap of the ending of Breaking Dawn 1. PAGE 6 Music Reviews Gogol Bordello By Jacob Uccellini Gogol Bordello is a Slavic and Asian band. They make catchy Eastern European tunes that have quirky lyrics. While almost all of their songs are simply for fun, there are a few that represent something. Like American Wedding that says that Americans are falling too deeply into a routine. Or Not a Crime, which says that stating your feelings and opinions is not illegal but should be encouraged. None the less, all of Gogol Bordello’s songs are funny, catchy, and entertaining. I would recommend this band to any people who like Adele By Jessie Roos Adele, who doesn’t know that name? Her main songs are “Rolling in the Deep” “Someone Like You” “Set Fire to the Rain” “Rumor Has it” and many more. Adele isn’t like most singer/songwriters out there; Adele takes her music more in depth and sings from the heart. However she faced vocal-cord hemorrhage in the year 2011 and had to get micro throat surgery to prevent future throat issues. She definitely came back stronger and is working on her third album. Adele is an inspiring artist that all types of people can relate to. The Civil Wars Band By Emily Reed The Civil Wars is a band that has only two people, Joy Williams and John Paul White. They have one album out called Batron Hollow. They sung at the Grammys this year and they also did a song with Taylor Swift called “Safe & Sound,” which is on the Hunger Games soundtrack. They are currently recording their next album and touring the UK. Mayhem Festival By Lexi Watson Mayhem Festival is a really cool tour where a bunch of bands come together and travel the country to perform! Many great bands play at Mayhem Tour, but mostly in the rock genre. This concert was fun, and it had an amazing ambiance! I would recommend it to anybody who’s into the rock genre. Asking Alexandria and Slipknot were my two favorite bands who performed at Mayhem Tour 2012. It was held at Niagara Pavilion, and it was an awesome event. I think everyone should check it out in the future. The Lumineers By Amanda Lewan The Lumineers are an up and coming band of 2012! All age ranges like this bands folk-rock vibe. Their top song “Ho Hey” was first featured on Bings “Discovering Hawaii” commercial, and it is now number thirty-one on the ITunes Top 100 chart. The band only has three members, Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, and Neyla Pekarek. You can find their album “The Lumineers” on ITunes, and I suggest you listen to some of it! One Direction 2013 Concert By Gillian Elliott One Direction is the new boy band of the year. They were on the X Factor and they did not win but Simon Cowell gave them a record deal anyway. Their songs are very catchy; their concert in Pittsburgh is July 8, 2013. It is located at the Consol Energy Center and I’m sure they will get a full house. Some of their songs are played on the radio such as, “What Makes You Beautiful, and One Thing.” They just came out with a new song “Live While We’re Young” and it is a wonderful song. Breaking Benjamin By Jessica Quinn Breaking Benjamin is an American rock band from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Currently, the band has released four studio albums to date and a greatest hits album that was released on August 16, 2011. The band is on hiatus due to frontman Benjamin Burnley's recurring Psy ‘Gangnam Style’ illnesses and his inability to tour in By Myles Dietrich mid-2010. Their most popular songs are Psy is a South Korean artist who has been “flying under the “So cold,” “Forget it,” “Rain,” “Away,” radar” for a while. He just came out with his new album “Psy6” and on that album is his hit song “Gangnam Style.” The words roughly translate “Breakdown,” “Sooner or later,” and to something like “Brains are more important than beauty.” The song is much more. Breaking Benjamin has sold over five million albums in the US in Korean but all of us Americans still love it. alone. NORTHGATE NEWS VOLUME V, ISSUE II Say Anything By Jessica Quinn Say Anything is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, fronted by Max Bemis. The band was formed in 2000 with Bemis and four of his friends. In the January 2012 issue of AP Magazine, Say Anything was listed as one of the most anticipated artists of 2012. Sleep Deprivation on Students by Jaclyn Yokel Only about 8 percent of high school students get enough sleep on an average school night. Some are not used to the patterns and some just don’t have the time. There are studies that showed nearly 20 percent more 12th grade students have more sleep defects than those who are in 9 th. It shows that 9 hours of sleep a night is what you should get, 8 hours being at the borderline. If you get less than 8 hours of sleep then you’re not getting enough. Without sleep you can’t concentrate and get things done. That’s why students should make sure to get plenty of it so they’re more focused to carry out their tasks of the day. PAGE 8 Animal Corner by Chelsea Dungan 8 Pit Bull Puppies Poisoned In Hollidaysburg, PA an event was held to raise awareness for Pit Bull's and an animal rescue organization. The event turned tragic when 8 Pit Bull puppies were poisoned. The dogs were take to Ebensburg Animal Hospital where the Veterinarian claimed it looked as if the 8-week-old puppies were given a toxin of some sort. The local animal rescue group said the toxin was most likely given to the dogs when an individual offered to give the puppies water. Four of the eight puppies are still recovering from the incident, sadly, the other four did not make it. The puppies were owned by a local animal rescue group. The rescue groups response to the incident "We will continue to raise awareness for the Pit Bull breed and hopefully we can put said individual behind bars." An investigation is being conducted. NORTHGATE NEWS VOLUME V, ISSUE II PAGE 9 The Sports Spot The Pittsburgh Steel Workers By Karsen Lorey Though this name is not used often, we should really appreciate what our name is while it is abbreviated. But how about them Steelers, who were now rested from their bye week and took on the Seattle Seahawks and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Steelers have defended our home but they have lost while they were away. First, the Denver defended their home turf against us. Next we kicked the Jets out of our town with frowns on their faces. Finally we almost broke the barrier at Oakland with a loss of thirty-four to thirty-one. Bet they were happy, don’t worry Pittsburgh, Frank’s still got the immaculate reception so we still have that win in our hearts. Let’s keep cheering for our team and let’s take it to them Seahawks!!! Let’s Go Steelers!!! The Refs Are Back! By Ray Mangone This football season in the NFL the real NFL referees were on strike and replacement refs came to the field for the early part of this season. The replacement refs were removed for causing a few teams to lose games because of their bad calls for touchdowns, receptions, and interceptions. The real refs came back September 27, 2012 for Thursday Night Football and refereed for the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. They were welcomed to the field and didn’t upset anyone, making perfect calls both ways. Middle School Girls Basketball By Maia Morris Middle school girls’ basketballs season is almost over. We’ve been practicing very hard every day. Our last game is October 15 against Eden Christian Academy at home. All of our games are at Bellevue Elementary School. Come watch us play before our season ends! Northgate JV Football By Wes Bartholomew The team has only had three games and our record is 1-2. We had only one scheduled game left against Avonworth but it was cancelled due to injuries. Some of the team is looking forward to next year when they can play varsity. Middle School Football By Kenny Azzarello This year we are doing well in the Northgate middle school football team. On October 3, 2012, we played our rivals, Avonworth, and it was the game we had been waiting for all year but we lost. So our record is 1-4 (1 win and 4 losses), but I know our team will win our last two games against South Fayette, and Quaker Valley. On October 10th we played South Fayette and we got killed, 41-6. Stefon Adams played quarterback and he was injured early in the game. He injured his ankle but he played Wednesday, October 17, 2012 against Quaker Valley. This was the last game of the season. They beat us 22-14. Perry Dorsey ran the whole game but no touchdowns. With his running, he got us down to the goal line and Stefon ran the two touchdowns in for our score. Our team is looking forward to the JV season next year. Northgate Varsity Football By Jesse Doscher The Flames suffered their first loss against the Sto Rox Vikings, the final score was 35-31, but the game was non-conference, so it does not affect the chances of playoffs. The Flames beat the Leechburg Blue devils 20-0, Cody Walter had 298 total yards of offense and Mackenzie Quinn had 22 tackles. The Flames played against Apollo Ridge and lost 20-19; they lost in the last seconds, when the Vikings kicked a field goal. The loss to Apollo Ridge was the first conference loss the Flames had in the season, and they are hoping to turn it around, and win out for the rest of the season against Springdale and Avonworth. PAGE Northgate Middle School Football By Corin Christian 10 Our record so far is 1-4. We played South Fayette, Hopewell, Blackhawk, and Avonworth so far. Out of all of those we won one game but it still doesn’t bring us down, no matter how much is on the scoreboard or how much we lose by, we still go home champions no matter what. Our big game was against Avonworth which we went up there and played hard with 12 people and 1 substitution if someone were to get hurt. Stefon Adams, our quarterback, and Elijah Thomas, our wide receiver, were the main people scoring our touch downs but even though we lost we still go home as a team. Our next rival was South Fayette, our biggest game of the year and we went out there with pride and glory and we tried our best to win this game but they beat us 41-6. Even though our quarterback, Stefon Adams was hurt we will suit up again next Wednesday to play Quaker Valley. Cody Walter Northgate Varsity Girls Volleyball By Kaitlyn Murphy By Publication Staff On October 11th, John Meyer, who is the morning sports anchor for WTAE, came to Northgate to award Cody Walter with player of the week. We had an assembly in his honor. When John asked Cody who works as hard as Cody, he identified Tim Driscoll, and brought him down on camera. Cody was given the chance to give a shout out to anybody on camera, and he “shouted out” to his mom, and said he would not have gotten as far without her. He passed out T-shirts to the team and threw some out to the crowd. John Meyer incited the crowd when he asked the students about popular television shows . He had wanted to come to our school for a long time because he had played against us when he was in high school at Carlynton. Mr. Sexton and Ms. Stawartz were people he gave a shout out to and he congratulated her on her upcoming baby. Northgate Golf Team By Allison Barker The golf team is doing exceptionally well this year. The team is made up of some Avonworth students and one Northgate student, Matt Dombrowski. The team is coached by Mr.Goble. Their Season has just ended but their record of this year was 13-4. They also made playoffs and finished in 4th place. This year both Varsity and J.V. Volleyball teams did very well! The Varsity record is 6-6 and J.V record is 5-7! We practiced very hard and it has been paid off with great wins. Lucky we are in the playoffs now and hopefully we will become section champs!! Good luck girls!! Pittsburgh Pirates By Austin Farmerie The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a good season and have lost all chances of play-offs. They are going to automatically have a 20th losing season. They play the Atlanta Braves today to see if they can get to be one game out of .500.This unfortunate events of the ending season have made sure that we did not get the one game out of .500 because we lost to the Braves which was the last game of the season for us. This was a bad season ending for our season. They had us on our seat for a while with them in first place but they did better than last year. They have had a good run in the season for playoffs. They have done okay but maybe next year will be the year! Northgate MS/HS Cross Country Team By Amanda Becker The Cross Country Team this year has gotten better than last year! We have more 7 th graders participating who are willing to do more than what the coaches were accepting. We have had a couple of meets already and we also have some kids on our team that have placed really well. I hope that throughout the season everyone gets better with their running skills! At the end of the season, two kids who qualify for states will be able to go to Hershey Park! I hope that at least two of the kids on our team can have the chance to go. Good Luck Middle School and High School Cross Country Team and have a great season! Cross-Country Central Catholic Invitational By Lily Hall The Cross-country team has had a very successful season so far this year. Last Saturday, the boys and girls teams competed in the Central Catholic Invitational at Schenley Park and finished very well. Among the top finishers in the girl’s race were Lillian Hall, who medaled in tenth place, and Lorelei Carrier. The boy’s team also did very well and finished third overall as a team. Individually, John Gusew took fifth place, Justin Jones took seventeenth, and Eric Forkin finished in twenty-first place. All in all, both teams did very well and are looking forward to competing at WPIALs (and hopefully states!) later in October. NORTHGATE NEWS VOLUME V, ISSUE II PAGE 11 Ford Theater By: Jacob Uccellini Ford Theater is a very important and tragic part of America’s history. President Lincoln was assassinated there by John Wilkes Booth. Booth was a firm radical that believed that the south had been cheated by the union when they lost the war. Lincoln was shot in the back of the head while watching a play at the Theater. Booth jumped off of the balcony that Lincoln had been watching the play on and landed on the stage, breaking his leg. Before Booth steals a horse and escapes, he shouts sic simper tyrannis or thus all wasted tyrants. To this day, Ford Theater is still making and producing great plays. Before every single play that plays in Ford Theater there is a moment of silence for President Lincoln. Also, the balcony on which Lincoln was shot has not been touched by remodeling. There is still and oil candle and an oil lamp. The same chairs that Lincoln and his wife were sitting in are still there. The only difference is that an United States flag has been laid across the balcony that drapes down past the front. I have been to the Ford Theater and it is an extremely moving experience to see the balcony with almost nothing changed and imagine what happened on that stage, in that balcony, and in the whole theater. Also, there is a museum that is open before every play if you want to learn about Lincoln’s election, presidency, and the civil war. The Ford Theater is in Washington D.C. Environmental Teen Town Hall By Allison Barker There was a field trip held on Wednesday October 17th, chaperoned by the gate teacher , Mrs. Majerac. The trip was an educational trip to the senator John Heinz History Center for an Environmental Teen Town Hall. The program is being held with the Smithsonian’s National Youth Summit. About eight students attended. The main purpose of the field trip was to get students to become more aware of environmental issues and to explore past and present environmental issues that impact Western Pennsylvania. Dumpster Day By: Aaron Meyer Anyone need community service? Anyone want to have fun with trash? Well come to Dumpster Day on October 27 to get both of those things! Our main goals are to assist people who are unable to get big items out for the trash, or to get people’s items that the garbage trucks won’t pick up. This will be the 15th annual Dumpster Day. There will be lunch afterward, and you will get 6 hours of community service. It is an ultimate win-win situation. Sign up for Dumpster Day in Mr. Michalow’s room by October 26th. “Generosity is not an occasional gift but a spirit that fuels your life.” Northgate Fight Song By Shayla Judge The Northgate Fight Song is something that has been chanted as a tradition at the Northgate Football games. Over the years less and less people started using it. Now as the flames are doing very well this football season we all want to get the song back! I think it would be a good idea to start it back! The song goes as following: Let’s give a cheer for the Northgate flames Far and wide we will cheer her name We will cheer and fight We will win – tonight Before we’re done We’ll all be number one The Red and Gold tear the goal posts down And fill the sky with victory sounds We will show our might We will Fight! Fight! Fight! Stand and cheer the Northgate Flames! National Walk To School Day MacKenzie Breauninger National walk to school day was on October 3, 2012. If you don’t know what “National Walk to School Day” is, it is when kids from the elementary school meet at Kuhn’s and walk as one with some of the band members down Lincoln Ave. Also the middle school and high school Members from student council and National honor society were assigned a specific spot to wait to walk children down to the elementary. Middle school/ high school concert choir performed. It was a great turn out!
