SEPTEMBER 2012
TRADITION NINE
"A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we
may create service boards or committees directly
responsible to those they serve."
A.A. is full of delightful paradoxes. Tradition Nine is, in my opinion, one of the biggest and best. It states that we “ought never be organized.” Yet it’s perfectly fine to create service boards and committees. Right there it seems like we’re allowing a specific form of organization, even while eschewing the idea of any organization! If you’re new to A.A. or have limited exposure to the inner workings of the fellowship, this nonorganization idea is likely puzzling to you. I know it was (and still is) to me. Here’s what I think it means: You’re not the boss of me! You’re not the boss of us! We’re not the boss of us, either! In other words, no one’s in charge of anyone else. CONTINUED TO PAGE 9

STEP NINE: “Made direct amends to such people
wherever possible except when to do so would
injure them or others.”
I want to begin with the story of our Akron, Ohio cofounder, Dr. Bob Smith, who knew he could not stay sober until he made his amends. He accomplished this in ONE DAY. In the Big Book, on page 156, we read about Dr. Bob’s 9th Step: “One morning he took the bull by the horns and set out to tell those he feared what his trouble had been. He found himself surprisingly well received, and learned that many knew of his drinking. Stepping into his car, he made the rounds of people he had hurt. He trembled as he went about, for this might mean ruin, particularly to a person in his line of business.” Dr. Bob’s story continues, “At midnight, he came home exhausted, but very happy. He has not had a drink since.” Dr. Bob confirmed that making an amends set him free, not only free from alcohol and all its baleful consequences, but also free from the bondage of selfwill run riot and living with the wreckage of one’s past. If we don’t deal with our past, it You can reach us by email at: centraloffice@aasacramento.org

“I can’t explain why I didn’t hang up. I just
sat there on the floor, with the receiver to
my ear. The next thing I heard was “Good
afternoon. Alcoholics Anonymous. May we
help you?”
Alcoholics Anonymous Teleservice, also known as the A.A. hotline, services alcoholics who are in need of help. We help them to locate
meetings in their area or provide them with someone to talk to in times
of crisis.
“Came to Believe” PG 23
This is a great way to be of service to your fellow alcoholics.
All you need is the use of a phone and a current meeting schedule. From
the comfort of your own home on a landline telephone or even while
you’re out and about with the use of a cell phone you can be of service.
We would love to have you join our team. If you have at least
six (6) months of sobriety and would like to be of service please contact

STEP NINE: CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 will keep calling us back. Amends means to “right a wrong” and to “change
our behavior.” During Step 4, I confronted liabilities, such as resentment, fear, defects of character, which caused me, and others, much harm. Some of my defects were “jealousy, envy, laziness, false pride, dishonesty, selfishness, criticism,
greed.” In the process of taking this searching and fearless moral inventory, I was able to make an amends list which would be further addressed in Steps 8 and 9. In discussions with my sponsor, she would begin with a simple request, “Let us
welcome God into our midst and ask God to
direct our thoughts today.” It was an assurance God was the One Ultimate Authority guiding us during our talks together. I was able to inventory my resentment, fear, false pride, and get rigorously honest with another person a person whom I trusted and in whom I could confine my innermost thoughts, doubts and fears. Our 7th Step Prayer taught me about humility, a deeper understanding of its essence, a desire to seek and do God’s will, and overcome whatever fear or false pride would stand in the way of my usefulness to my Creator and my fellows. I would need the Good Orderly Direction of this Prayer before making my 9th Step amends. On page 83 in our Big Book, our 9th Step reads: “The spiritual life is not a
theory; we have to live it.” Living this way of life meant I needed to cooperate with a Power greater than myself to overcome fear, right a wrong, amend behavior, move forward and not live in the past with the tormenting ghosts of yesteryear. My sponsor told me, ‘Do not be afraid to encounter risks. It is by trusting in
God we learn courage.” My direct amends from early sobriety was with my immediate family, children, coworkers, loved ones close to me. With God’s help, I became accountable, responsible, and willing to admit my wrongs, to give/receive forgiveness, and change my behavior. I learned to build a trust which I had destroyed during my drinking years. QUIZ ON STEP 9: In our Twelve & Twelve, written years after the Big Book, by our cofounder, Bill Wilson, there are some questions to be addressed. Answers: pages 8387. 1. What are the several classes into which our amends are divided? 2. What does good judgment tell us? 3. We cannot buy our peace of mind with Late Submissions from August

TRADITION NINE: CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
How can A.A. function outside of a formal structure? As a practical matter, it’s the only way we can function. You see, A.A. is a group of alcoholics. Each one of us wants to control and direct the show. We are convinced our way is the ONLY way. A.A.s don’t like to be told what to do (or not to do). As the 12x12 states, alcoholics “can’t be dictated to, individually or collectively.” Thus we need a way to deal with the rampant selfwill inherent within the A.A. group. The same character defects that plague us in our disease will (and often do) manifest at group level. Recovery requires us to do the exact opposite of what our minds and bodies are hardwired to do. We treat our disease by working the Steps and being willing to grow upon spiritual lines. The A.A. group, too, must work within spiritual principles. The group’s spiritual fitness is gauged by the same measures as yours or mine. Individually and collectively we must avoid the “dangers of great wealth, prestige and entrenched power.” No one member, or group of members, has the power or authority to make decisions. We have no board of directors, no divisions, no subsidiaries, no departments or work units. We have no hierarchy. In fact, such organizational structures are anathema to our spirit of service. Time and again I’ve heard people – with all good intentions – try to bring in “management” and “problem
solving” tools from the outside. “Oh yes, we had an issue just like this at work and we did X.” But A.A. does not function like any organization you have encountered in the outside world. It’s true we are not organized. Yet we are hardly “disorganized.” There’s an inherent cohesion to our lack of organization. It’s like we’re held together by a centrifugal force of each other and our Higher Power. The force of Good Orderly CCFAA
Direction (aka GOD) enables us to work together to keep the doors open so we can continue to share the message and help other alcoholics. Anytime A.A.s start issuing orders and pronouncements bordering on “must” or “can’t” (no absolutes allowed in A.A.!!), the natural order of things (GOD) responds and the situation rights itself naturally, in spite of the controlling behavior or demands of any member or subgroup. If we find the same “clique” of trusted servants filling the same positions over and over again and making all the business decisions for the fellowship, we’re not practicing Tradition Nine. It’s time to let others take a turn. The tradition of rotation is our safety valve in this regard. Like everything else in A.A., this idea is simple. But it’s not easy. However, there’s a huge reward for abiding by Tradition Nine. As long as the tradition of nonorganization is in effect, it’s virtually impossible for the group to make the wrong decision. We may look to precedent to guide us in handling an issue. We may consult our own fellowship’s group guidelines (note they are never called rules). We may check to see what Central office or New York might offer on the subject. In the end, however, we are free to make whatever decision our group wants to make even if “the majority experience in A.A. does seem to suggest” a different outcome. This sounds to me a lot like “turning it over” to GOD via the group conscience. Once again, the Traditions do for us (collectively) what we cannot do for ourselves. That is to keep the A.A. fellowship united and growing along spiritual lines so that we can continue to fulfill our primary purpose. Genius. Simply genius! ~Miranda R. Page 9

We haven’t forgotten…
“The Third Legacy” article we started in August that
was reprinted from The Good News from 1978, will be
continued in the October Edition of the By The Way.
An Archival Treasure
On Thursday, July 26th, I answered the office phone as I was placing a note with a phone
number on the bottom of my monitor. There was a strong clear voice of a woman on the other
end. She (Yvonne S.) said she had called earlier to inquire if the Fellowship would be interested
in a Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous signed by Bill W. and Dr. Bob. My heart got caught in
my throat—The note that I had just placed on my monitor was a message to try this number to
see if I could reach a lady who had called 10 days earlier regarding a signed Big Book!
It was nothing short of a miracle that she called again because the number I had retrieved in
hopes of calling her, should we not receive the materials by mail, was incorrect.
She briefly explained that her Father became a sober member of AA in 1942 when she was 18
years old and she had his Big Book and some of his writings. Her Father had his book signed by
Bill W. and Dr. Bob on March 21, 1948 (the date is recorded with the signatures). Yvonne
proudly stated that she was now 88 and was going through her things to down-size for a move
and would we like to have the Big Book. She said she called back because she didn’t think that
the person who answered her first call understood what she was offering. How right she was.
I assured her that I would be happy to come and pick up the materials at a time convenient for
her. We agreed that I and another AA would come to her home in Roseville at noon on
Saturday, July 28th. I could hardly contain my curiosity and delight.
I arrived at her home promptly at noon with a lovely potted Shining Star Hydrangea and a
sponsee in tow. All that transpired would require more space for the telling than is available in
this month’s issue of the BTW.
Briefly: Her Father, Eldon B., started his journey to recovery in April 1942 when a sober
member of AA visited their home (in Huntington Park) in response to a request for help written
by her Mother. Mrs. Eldon B. had been following the columnist, Ted LeBerthon, in the L. A.
Daily News. Mr. LeBerthon had devoted space in his column to report on the activities and
success of the alcoholic association in the Los Angeles area. Mrs. B. had been reading that
column and decided to write for help for her suffering husband.
Yvonne said that within a few days of her Mother sending off that letter (see the facsimile on
the next page), an AA 12 Stepper came to their home. Eldon B. was in bed and in a very bad
way. After introducing himself, the AA gentleman went into her Father’s room and spoke with
him. Her Dad got out of bed, got dressed and was taken to an AA meeting. This pattern of being
picked up for meetings continued for many days. Eldon B., never drank again and passed away
in 1968 at the age of 76 with 26 years of sobriety.
One of the most touching of his writings is his early journal entry on surrender and embracing
the program of recovery. In this writing he records his experience with DT’s.
These archival treasures will be on display at Central Office when the appropriate display cases
are obtained. Stay tune for more of this incredible story of despair, hope and recovery.

SEPTEMBER 2012
April 5, 1942
Dear Sir,
I have been reading of the Alcoholics organization and wonder if
you could call at our home some time very soon to see my poor wretched
husband. I don’t know how he would receive you but don’t think he wants
to drink so much, all the trouble it causes him. I had my Methodist
Minister talk to him once and he seemed better for a while, so I think he
could be reached some way. He had an early religious training but has
wandered very far away. He is 50 now, I am 44, don’t know how or why
I’ve lived with him for 22 years. Our children, a boy and girl are 18 and 15
and he seems to love them until liquor gets him.
He has a good job, not so much pay but steady if he quits drinking,
has been warned lots of times to stop, so that’s the dilemma we are in.
Once a month at least he drinks every night for about a week until he
comes home staggering and dirty as a pig. He yells in his sleep and curses
so loud that he can be heard a long way. He took the so called cure once
but helped him for only three months. He is good underneath, loving and
sweet when he doesn’t drink. After he has spent all his money he is quite
sober for about a month, sometimes he drinks a lot every pay day which is
twice a month.
He works after noon shift from 3:30 to 12, so he would have to be
reached before 1:30 or 2. I wish you could have seen him before, now his
money is all gone and unless he borrows more or gets credit for it, he
might not be so drunk for a little while.
He was the drunkest Easter night that I’ve seen him in a long time,
fell in the mud outside, he had to work until 10 P.M. but didn’t get home
until almost 1 A.M. He is drinking wine right now.
I hope so much that you can contact him. I feel as this is my last
ray of hope, I’ve tried everything. I feel like I haven’t had enough faith in
God, but he has to want to be helped too.
We owe a lot on our place and hate to lose it. I have never worked
and it would be hard for me to get adjusted, I dislike taking the children
from school. If he could be cured of drink, all would be so much better, as I
think that he would be so much happier. He really looks quite miserable
when he gets drunk. At first is very cocky, thinks he can handle it, but he
can’t at all.
Yours, Very Truly
Mrs. Eldon B.

A poem written by Eldon B.
Bill Wilson’s mind conceived a plan,
From which he carved a fine program,
For you and me.
A psycology (psychology) of life to live,
A philosophy we can use and give,
A life crammed full of happiness,
A life we can’t afford to miss.
We have the right to choose our God,
Or choose the road that’s still untrod,
If we desire.
We can now take time to stop and think,
And figure out what caused our drink,
If cause we had.
Perhaps a phobia or fear,
And we found that a glass of beer,
Would quell this feeling for a while,
And bring us cheer,
And we could smile.
And as time went by we came to know,
That beer alone would work to slow.
So a couple shots we’d take right quick,
And found that this would do the trick.
And when we’d wake up feeling bum,
We’d take a husky shot of rum.
And then sometimes we’d over do,
And start us on another stew.
It first got Bad, and then got worse,
And then began to be a curse.
To us and those that were entailed,
Before we went to making jail.
Then jails and sanitarium,

And two bit flops down in the slums.
And broke and hungry too sometimes,
Our mind would toy with petty crimes,
That may pay off.
Pay off they did,
Like hens we raised.
We ate their brood and ate their eggs.
And when they ceased to cost their lot,
We placed them in a boiling pot.
We paid society - and how,
We shed our blood and beat our brow.
We did the Counties dirty work,
A job we couldn’t shake or shurk.
When the bailiff let us out the mill,
We headed right straight down the hill,
Out in the rain.
And we stopped first at Toney’s Place,
To drown our sorrows and disgrace,
And ease our pain.
The pain in which that I refer,
Was only mental and a blur,
To me today.
But the pain that followed this,
Is surely one I hope you miss.
It’s the maximum of torture without ease,
It is not a bad headache or something you can
shake
It’s the real McCoy.
They call it the D.T.s

SEPTEMBER 2012 Look, see that bump beneath the rug,
That could be anythingA serpent with its beady eyes,
A bear that’s full of fight,
A mad dog with a frothy mouth,
Or a leper thin and white.
Now about these little brown men,
They march without a cease.
They’re not afraid of God or man,
Or a thousand big police.
They must have come from pigmey parents,
Bread and born and reared in Hell,
They keep marching, ever marching,
Never have a resting spell.
They’re paying no attention it seems - to anything,
The just simply take the attitude of
Death where is thy sting.
Look again, his head comes through,
His eyes are emerald green.
Get a club and smash that head,
Before I have to scream.
I think I’ll join their army,
And trail them back to Hell.
Ah - there’s my name right on the line,
Now I think we will rest a spell.
The rats were playing ball last night,
The game was six to four.
Then here come a bunch of wild cats,
And jumped right through the door.
Of all the bloody yowling hell,
That took place in this room,
I thought my day was over,
And I’d surely met my doom.
And now my friends I’m on the mend,
And who drops in - a former friend,
Of days of your.
He tells me that he had some tips,
That I almost cashed in all my chips,
On this last binge.
I guess that’s right, but what’s the odds,
I’ve lost all my friends, and all my jobs.
I’ve lost my health, and all respect,
I guess I’m through,
It’s time I checked.
See, the rats are in the smoking tray,
Eating up the butts.
God if this keeps (up) much longer,
I will go completely nuts.
Will you admit to God and man,
That you’ve done everything you can,
To quit the booze?
I’ve been watching this turmoil go on,
For days and days and nights.
Of reptile beast and varmint,
And they’re always in a fight.

Faithful Fivers Middle of the Road p.241
“In some sections of A.A., anonymity is carried to the point of real
absurdity. Members are on such a poor basis of communication that they
don’t even know each other’s last names or where each lives. It’s like the
cell of an underground.
“In other section, we see exactly the reverse. It is difficult to restrain
A.A.’s from shouting too much before the whole public, by going on
spectacular ‘lecture tours’ to play the big shot.
“However, I know that from these extremes we slowly pull ourselves onto
a middle ground. Most lecturegiving members do not last too long, and
the superanonymous people are apt to come out of hiding respecting their
A.A. friends, business associates, and the like. I think the longtime trend is
toward the middle of the road which is probably where we should be.”

IV. Trusted Servant Reports A. Chairperson’s Report – Stan J August 18, 2012 Welfare of Central California Fellowship: CCFAA Picnic: The last CCFAA Picnic Planning Committee meeting was held on 08/17/12. See everyone at the picnic tomorrow, 08/19/12 (Sunday, 9am4pm in Elk Grove Park). This picnic is really the welfare of CCFAA. We would not be able to provide a third of the services we currently provide if it wasn’t for this picnic. John Q and the team he has assembled are doing a great job making sure everything was thought of and all bases covered. The results of this event will really determine what the rest of this year will look like as far as budget concerns. If you are on the fence about coming, jump on down to the picnic side of life and shake your bootie on the dance floor, or be a chili judge by purchasing an all you can eat chili bull, or get your shop on in the White Elephant arena. Personally, I enjoyed pouring chili on my hotdog and created my own chili dog last year. Enjoy a day at the park with friends, family, food, and fun. Finally, embrace our speakers when they share their experience, strength, and hope at 10am and 2pm. This year’s speakers are: Howard H @ 10am and Rick B @ 2pm. Park name & location: Elk Grove Regional Park 9950 Elk Grove Florin Rd., Elk Grove, CA, 95624 Search the internet for directions to this address. I brought 10 copies of a map for those without internet access. Please see me after the meeting if you would like a hardcopy. Volunteers needed at Central Office at 9:30am on 08/31/12 and 09/28/12 to help assemble the By The Way and on 09/11/12 to help with flyers. Enjoy donuts, coffee, and good times for all volunteers. Please call ahead if volunteering so they can accommodate all volunteers. Deadline for flyers for September is September 10th and for October is October 10th. Deadline for submissions to October’s By The Way is September 15th. (See the By The Way for additional volunteer information and deadline details.)
Central Office closed: August 18th 20th, (Saturday before and Monday after CCFAA Picnic) September 3rd, (Monday for Labor Day) Together in Service, we are the welfare of Central California Fellowship of AA. Stan J., CCF Chairperson, www.aasacramento.org B. Assistant Chair/CNIA Liaison – Betty K.

August 14, 2012
1. The NCCOM Workshop was held here in Sacramento at Central Office on Friday, August 3rd. The CNIA 07 Area Delegate, Lela M., was invited to share with the group on her Conference experience and topics that Central Office could have input on. The discussions were lively and very informative. 2. The Northern California Woman to Woman Conference made a contribution of $1479. Thanks to all. 3. Second Quarter payroll & sales tax returns and payments were completed by the July 31st due date. 4. Response to the requests for more Office volunteers was awesome. Thanks for getting the word out to your groups. 5. Rick S our NCCAA Liaison and his volunteer committee manned the Central Office Literature table at the July NCCAA Conference in Auburn. The committee sold $420 in AAWS/GV literature. Great Job. Thanks to all. 6. The Office has created a postcard and brochure to help the Special Needs Committee with volunteer and informational needs. The brochure will be presented to the Delegates for review and approval. 7. The 27th Annual Intergroup/Central Office/AAWS/AAGV Seminar will take place in Washington, DC September 2629. The Seminar is a valuable tool for Office Managers to exchange “best practices” and share experience, strength and hope. This venue provides managers an opportunity to have facetoface communications with GSO and Grapevine Staff as well as the General Service Board. 8. Check the September BTW for details of archival treasures that have been donated to the Central California Fellowship. 9. The 2013 Spring Fling Flyer & Registration brochure was distributed in the August flyer mailing on August 13th. …And all is well. Rae W. Discussion: We are looking for a display case that someone can donate to display an Autographed First Edition Big Book. E. Treasurers Report – Tom W.
Income: Income for the month is above average, as a result of stronger Group Contributions, and a Special Events Revenue contribution from Northern California Woman to Woman. Overall YTD income is below projections, due to lowerthanprojected AAWS Literature Sales, Group Contributions, Birthday Club, and Faithful Fivers. Continue to promote these activities! We look forward to the Annual Picnic for a big boost as we go into the second half of the year. Gross Income: Gross Income is lower than the prorated budget due to the factors cited above. Expenses: Overall, expenses are favorable to budget. Although insurance looks unfavorable, this is due to the bulk of insurance premiums being paid early in the year, when the annual budget is spread evenly across the twelve months – eventually the budget will “catch up” with the spending and we should be on target. Other expense areas appear to be on track. We can expect additional spending in a couple of areas where there has been little so far: Other Committees (Picnic Committee specifically), and Meetings/Conference Expense. Bottom Line: YTD Net Income (Loss) at $(3,254) is favorable to the ProRated Budget by $1,343. Picnic Revenue will put us in a Net Income position. Group Contributions reported in By the Way: There was an error in how the total for June Group Contributions was reported in the June By the Way. Although amounts reported for individual groups were correct, the total that was reported was inadvertently carried over from the June By the Way. The August By the Way shows the correction for June alongside the July contributions. Please note that in any given month, due to printing and mailing deadlines for By the Way, Group Contributions are reported as of a few days before the end of the month, and may not include contributions received in the last couple of days for the month. Respectfully submitted, Tom W cfo@aasacramento.org F. By Laws & Procedures Chairperson’s Report – Terry S. Absent
No report, discussion regarding Bylaw changes will be discussed in old business. G. PI/CPC Monthly Meeting Minutes – Bill B.
“Members of CPC Committees inform professionals and future professionals about AA – what we are, where we are, what we can do, and
what we cannot do. They attempt to establish better communication between AA’s and professionals, and to find simple, effective
ways of cooperating without affiliating.” (AA Cooperation with the Professional Community Workbook)

Request approval to reelect Al to OOC. No one was interested in the position and Al was reelected in. B. John Q proposed that the ByLaws be changed to allow 3 approved absences. Paul indicated that in order to change By Laws that a formal proposal must be written up and presented to delegate body one month, have discussion the following month and election the month following that. C. Delegate David E is proposing that all groups and meetings be listed in the group contributions table in each edition of the CCFAA 'By the Way' publication. He was hoping to show transparency amongst the groups. There are many groups and it could possibly add several pages to the By the Way. It was also mentioned was this to guilt groups into contribution. Karen Y indicated that at one time all groups were listed. It was to save money that those that are not contributing are not listed. There were several ideas presented on alternate solutions. VIII. Closing Meeting closed at 5:10 pm.
STEP NINE: CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8
6. What are the only exceptions we make to this Step? Since there are not pat answers to Step 9, what should we be absolutely sure of? Well, my friends, I leave you with our 9th Step Promises. What more can be said – for they sum up the blessings of what this priceless journey into the Realm of Spirit and Recovery represents for many of us. “If we are painstaking about this phrase of our development, we will be amazed before we are halfway through. We
are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past
nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will
know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our
experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and selfpity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Selfseeking will
slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook on life will change. Fear of people and of
economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations
which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is during for us what we
could not do for ourselves.’
Remember, do not let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past nor for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life. In grace & gratitude, Kathy K., Sacramento, CA CCFAA

CONCEPT IX
Good service leaders, together with sound and appropriate
methods of choosing them, are at All levels indispensable
for our future functioning and safety. The primary world
service leadership once exercised by the founders of A.A.
must necessarily be assumed by the Trustees of the
General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous.
“No matter how carefully we design our service structure
of principals and relationships, no matter how well we
apportion authority and responsibility, the operating
results of our structure can be no better than the personal
performance of those who must man it and make it work.
Good leadership cannot function well in a poorly designed
structure….Weak leadership can hardly function at all,
even in the best of structures.
[…]
“A leader in A.A. service is therefore a man (or woman)
who can personally put principles, plans and policies into
such dedicated and effective action that the rest of us
want to back him with his job.
