Dow AgroSciences introduces the latest technology in
industrial vegetation management products for reliable results in
controlling some of the toughest broadleaf while providing grass
seed head suppression. Opensight® herbicide is a new product
designed to provide reliable, consistent results for control of
herbaceous and woody plants on non-cropland areas including
roadside and utility rights-of-way.
It contains two herbicides with different modes of action, and
offers both foliar control of susceptible weeds and soil residual
activity to stay on the job several weeks after application. This
dual activity keeps areas free from newly germinating herbaceous
weeds. Also, having two herbicides with different modes of
action can help with resistance management if that is an issue
with the weeds you are trying to control.
On top of controlling over 175 herbaceous weed species,
Opensight will provide seedhead suppression and reduce the
overall height of tall fescueand bahiagrass. Roadside managers
can therefore reduce the number mowings necessary on
roadsides. Taking advantage of early season applications of
Opensight on roadsides to suppress seedheads and eliminate
tall growing weeds not only increases safety for the traveling
public but also for transportation employees by decreasing their
exposure to traffic while mowing.
Some Plant Growth Regulators (PGR’s) commonly used to
suppress grass seedheads and height also decrease grass cover
which increases the potential for soil erosion and stimulates weed
invasion. Using Opensight will lead to tighter turf, improving the
aesthetics of the roadside and prolonging weed control. Current
research at 11 sites across the south and Midwest demonstrate
these results.
In two Florida studies on bahiagrass, Opensight at 2.5 ounces
per acre applied at spring green-up in May showed a rate of more
than 93 percent seedhead suppression. The tests concluded
that Opensight achieved high rates of bahiagrass seedhead
suppression, with acceptable, temporary injury to bahiagrass as a
result of treatments (see Chart 2).
Studies in Iowa and Kentucky, on tall fescue show that Opensight
applied at 2.5 or 3.3 ounces per acre achieved more than
83 percent seedhead suppression and 30 percent height
suppression at 71 days after treatment. Applications were made
when the grass was between 6 and 8 inches in height. Another
trial on tall fescue in (insert state here) illustrates that Opensight®
at 3.3 ounces per acre was again found to reduce the tall fescue
grass height by 79 percent versus a treatment of Milestone® VM
at 4.0 ounces per acre at 52 days after treatment (Chart 1). The
Opensight treatment decreased the grass height by 10 inches.
Other than suppressing the seedheads, there were no negative
effects observed from the Opensight applications on the tall
fescue at any of the trials.
