First, we presented our Adopted Family (Grandma Jane and her 5 Grandchildren) $1000.00 and a Christmas Tree. They received $500.00 in cash, $250.00 Gift Certificate to Safeway and another $250.00 in gift cards for the children for Christmas presents from donations received from our members and guests. We also provided $360.00 as gift to Kathryn and her wait staff at the Five Palms Restaurant. They provide excellent service throughout the year and it is not easy providing the meals when every week the attendance is an unknown. Many Mahalos to the staff! Some fun was poked at team #1 from our Christmas Party and the entire team was required to recite the Four Way Test to instill in them to remember “Is It The Truth”. Our fabulous Social Chairs provided an excellent Christmas theme throughout the restaurant and Joanne Laird presented to all a handmade Christmas Ornament as a gift. Our Speaker, Norm Bezane, discussed his writings within his book “Voices of Maui” and many members purchased his book. A great buy! In closing I wish everyone a Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas) and a Hau’oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year). We will be dark for the 22nd and 29th of December and we return on January 5th. Mahalo, Ed ROTARY CLUB OF KIHEI SUNRISE DECEMBER 18, 2010 SPEAKER NOTES NORM BEZANE Author “Voices of Maui” Norm was introduced by Jean Wayne Norm showed the YouTube promo of the book. – 15 people are subjects of his book. The book is divided into six sections. Norm interviewed all the subjects and taped all the interviews. Norm shared quotes and information about the following Mauians who are subjects of his book – his goal in writing his book was to attempt to capture the “essence” of each subject: Willie K, George Kahumouku, Theo Morrison, Keoki Freeland (husband of artist Betty Hay Freeland), Charles (Charlie) Maxwell, Hokelani Holt, Elle Cochran. Paradox in Paradise – contrasts the old and the new – fishing on Kaanapali Beach vs. construction of resorts. Despite all the growth Maui remains Maui – billowing clouds, majestic skies – Maui thrives best when paradise remains paradise. “The aina takes care of you, so take care of the aina”! Norm answered questions from the audience – How long did it take you to write it – too long! Distribution is an issue – through Amazon.com – not sold at Barnes and Noble. At the conclusion of the meeting Norm offered books for sale and personally autographed each copy. 2 ROTARY CLUB OF KIHEI SUNRISE DECEMBER 18, 2010 MEETING NOTES Pledge & Inspiration: Judy Gray – Read us A Toast to the New Year – with recommendations of “things to do” – the surest way to have a friend is to be one – and many more thoughts to keep in mind as we begin 2011.
