For a child who is battling cancer, there are times when
hope is plentiful and the steps forward seem easy to take.
There are times when children are surrounded by their
family and friends, doctors and nurses, neighbors and
well-wishers. Times when they have so much love and
encouragement and support and it seems like anything
is possible and no obstacle is insurmountable.
There are other times, however, when hope is harder to
find. Times when the battle becomes more difficult than
anyone could have imagined it would be. When the giant
in front of them seems impossible to slay and they begin
to believe that they aren’t big enough, or strong enough,
or resilient enough to win.
All too often, those times come without warning. It could
happen when a young boy finally gets tired of being so
violently ill after every chemo treatment. Or when a little
girl has had enough of the stares and snickers at her bald
head. It could even happen when a son can no longer
stand to see the heartbreak in his parents’ eyes after the
doctor delivers another round of bad news.
It’s during these moments that hope is hard to come
by. But it’s also during these moments when hope is
most important.
2 2015 Zak!Charity Open
None of us can ever predict when those moments will
arrive, and as much as we want to, we can’t prevent
them from happening. What we can do is make sure that
when those horrible moments arrive, the children who
have to endure them have what they need to make it
through the darkness that threatens to overwhelm them.
For that to happen, we have to be willing to give those
children all the hope we can – not just at the beginning
of their monumental battle, but every step of the way.
Because when children are full of love and support and
encouragement – when children are full of hope – even
the most impossible steps somehow seem a little easier
to take.
And sometimes, having the hope to take that next step
makes all the difference in the world.

It is natural for any child to be fearful of new experiences
and strange environments. For children with cancer, the
hospital can quickly become a scary, confusing place that
they associate with pain and sickness. Parents and health
care professionals need a wide range of tools to help
them. One of the strongest fears is that of the unknown.
Medical Play Kits are a valuable tool for parents and
healthcare professionals to help facilitate a dialogue
with children and create a bridge between the hospital and home
by demystifying some of the procedures. By allowing children to become more familiar with the
medical devices found in the medical play kit, they become more mentally prepared for what they will encounter during
upcoming tests and treatments, lessening the fear of the unknown.
gAs gIFT CARd - $50
For many families, staying at the hospital just isn’t an option. Life’s commitments and responsibilities don’t disappear just
because a child has cancer. Many families are forced to drive long distances to take care of those commitments and rush back
to be by their child’s side. A simple gas card can mean the difference between being together or being alone.

Once a month, pediatric oncology patients and their families gather together and enjoy a family dinner, supported by the Rypien

to improving the lives of children with cancer. Through
the years we have increased our funding to support even
more programs that provide guidance, aid and quality care
to patients and their families. In addition, we have funded
special construction projects within the Children’s Hospital
including a children’s movie theatre, interactive outdoor
terrace off the pediatric oncology unit, and most notably the
Rypien Foundation Children’s Emergency Center, all to foster
a powerful healing environment where kids’ unique medical
and emotional needs are met with expert care
from nurses and doctors skilled in pediatrics. The Rypien
Foundation is creating some happy memories for a lot of
children, bringing some comfort to worrying parents, and
giving some hope to families where it was in short supply.
And none of it would be possible without you.
Your support during the Paddle Raise tonight will advance
the mission of the Rypien Foundation to provide hope
for local families battling childhood cancer. Since 2004,
the Rypien Foundation has touched hundreds of lives and

It’s easy to see how someone could become bitter and
withdrawn after being diagnosed with cancer – especially at
an early age. What takes infinitely more courage is to face
that diagnosis with a kind and generous spirit that will inspire
everyone around you. And that’s exactly what Sheldon Maul
did. In the 20 years he was on this earth, Sheldon lived every
single day to the fullest, and he did it wearing a smile on his
face that was as powerful as it was contagious.
As a way to honor that inspiring spirit, the Zak Foundation
established the Sheldon Maul Courage Fund to help provide
financial assistance to children and their families who are
battling cancer. A portion of the proceeds of the Zak Foundation
are dedicated to the Sheldon Maul Courage Fund, and this
year that money is going toward the Emergency Travel
Assistance Program that helps children with especially rare or
aggressive forms of cancer be able to afford to travel outside
of Spokane for the specialized treatment they need. While
this step can sometimes mean the difference between a clean
bill of health and an unthinkable alternative, the cost can
8 2015 Zak!Charity Open
be overwhelming to families who are already burdened with
extensive medical bills. By providing these children and their
families with the financial assistance to go seek the treatment
that might only be available in one or two cities in the nation,
the Sheldon Maul Courage Fund is helping to give these
courageous children the hope they need to have a fighting
chance at the kind of life Sheldon inspired all of us to live!
In addition to the fund that was set up to help cancer patients
and their families, the Zak Foundation has also established
the Sheldon Maul Courage Award as a way to honor and
celebrate someone who embodies the brave and generous
spirit that defined the way Sheldon lived his life. This award
will be presented each year to an individual affiliated
with Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital who has
displayed unwavering courage and selflessness while battling
cancer – because all of us can learn so much about life from
these inspirational warriors like Sheldon who refuse to ever
allow their spirit to be broken by something as monumentally
insignificant as cancer.

For most kids – even for most adults – it would’ve been too
much. It would’ve been too devastating. Not for Jayme. The
smile might not have come quite so easily after that, but it
was still there. And so was the courage.
Once again, Jayme fought. She fought through the tears and
the heartache. She fought through the pain and the setbacks.
She fought with the heart of a warrior and the spirit of a
saint. And through it all, Jayme kept smiling and kept giving
to all those around her. Whether it was a Penny Drive to raise
money for patients in elementary school or just spending time
with other children on Sacred Heart’s Pediatric Oncology
floor who needed a friend and a little encouragement,
Jayme never failed to give to others and her courage and
generosity always shined do much brighter than any pain
she was forced to endure. And even when she was tired, and
weak, and sick, Jayme found a way to make it to nearly every
Zak!Charity Open event and reminded all of us just how
important it is to never stop fighting.
Some people go their entire lives without ever knowing
what true courage feels like. Others, however, are forced
to find it earlier in life than anyone should ever have to.
Jayme Hayford was in Kindergarten when she was first
diagnosed with leukemia. At five years old, when other girls
were learning how to skip rope and braid their doll’s hair,
Jayme had to learn how painful the sting of a chemo needle
can be and what it felt like to have to trade the joy of the
classroom for the uncertainty of a hospital bed.
It wasn’t fair. And it wasn’t right. Jayme could have kicked and
screamed and complained. She could’ve given up. But what
she did was grab hold of that unbelievable courage she’s filled
with, and she fought. For three years she fought. She fought
through those carefree years of innocence that no child should
ever have to lose. She fought through missed birthday parties
and sleepovers and field trips. She fought with the kind of
bravery that would make seasoned soldiers envious. She
fought, and she won.
Jayme’s been cancer-free for nearly 12 years now. She doesn’t
look back at the childhood she lost with regret, but instead
cherishes the memories of the family and friends and doctors
and nurses who helped her find the courage to inspire so many.
It is for that reason, and so many others, that Jayme has been
selected to receive the 2015 Sheldon Maul Courage Award.
Jayme is an especially appropriate recipient of the inaugural
award because not only does she perfectly embody the spirit
that this award was
created to celebrate,
but she was also a dear
friend of Sheldon’s.
And, like Sheldon,
Jayme is one of those
shining examples of a
person who can teach
us all the gift of living
each and every day to
the fullest.
When she was in third grade, Jayme was officially declared
cancer-free. She no longer had to fight. Not anymore. All she
would have to worry about now was the cooties that boys
carried and the friends she no longer had to be apart from.
A month into her fourth grade year, however, that innocent
childhood she so richly deserved was once again stripped
away from her. Jayme’s leukemia was back. Her fight was
beginning all over again.

Bob McConkey began his career in the wholesale auto auction
industry over 3 decades ago; his passion for bringing people
together, collaborating and competing in a viable market
brought him to Spokane with his best friend and business partner, Greg Mahugh. In 1992, the two founded DAA Northwest on
the West Plains.
employees deliver food to the school so that at-risk children
will have healthy meals and snacks throughout the weekend.
These efforts are in conjunction with the Common Core
initiative and Second Harvest. Next fall, DAA’s employees
plan to deepen the relationship with Sunset Elementary,
providing mentoring, clothing and other needed items.
In the years that followed, Bob and Greg assembled a Spokane
team that now consists of 200 employees. This “DAA Family” has
continued to grow beyond the Northwest. Now known as the
McConkey Auction Group, it includes wholesale auto auctions in
Spokane, Seattle, Kansas City and El Paso. Core values of Integrity,
Excellence, Professionalism and Fun permeate throughout the
organization, and there is a strong emphasis on community
support in each location.
Under Bob’s leadership, DAA Northwest has had a positive
impact on our community. Where the Zak!Charity Open is
concerned, he has personally volunteered to be the auctioneer
for the dinner/auction every year since 2005. Due in part to
his efforts, we’ve been able to raise more than $4.7 million
for local children’s charities. He has also auctioneered for the
Rypien Foundation’s annual Winemaker’s Dinner for each of
the 11 years the event has been held.
In addition to the many years that DAA Northwest has been
a sponsor of the Zak!Charity Open, Bob, his team and the
company’s auto dealer customers consistently support more
than 30 local and global non-profit organizations. DAA’s
annual Anniversary Sale Fundraiser has brought a million
dollars to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Young Life, Union
Gospel Mission and Spring of Hope International. Recently,
DAA’s employees pooled together to sponsor Sunset Elementary,
a public school two miles from the auction. Each Friday,
Sometimes, the greatest gift any of us can give is our time
and our talents. And that is exactly what Bob McConkey
does without question and without exception. His selfless
devotion to helping raise money for children in our area
exemplifies the reason the Dan Fitzgerald Humanitarian
Award was established, and it is our great pleasure to present
this award to Bob for all that he has done to help bring hope
to children in our community.

voluNTeeR ThANK you
The Zak!Charity Open thanks all of our wonderful volunteers for their heartfelt commitment to children in our community.
The success of our event is not possible without the overwhelming generosity of their time, talents and enthusiasm.
And finally, we would especially like to thank our event sponsor,
Zak Designs, with special gratitude extended to Irv Zakheim,
Lisa Stephens, Tom Pauley and Brenda Wheeler. We would also
like to extend a heartfelt, “thank you” to Lona Barnum for her
outstanding contributions and hard work in the production of
our Summer Celebration.
All of you have our sincerest gratitude for your remarkable
support of this event and your noble commitment to children
of our community.

The Rypien Foundation would like to thank all of the dedicated
people who have supported the Zak!Charity Open this
year. This amazing event would not be possible without
the continued support we receive from all of our generous
sponsors and participants.
A special thanks to our Title Sponsors, the Kalispel Tribe of
Indians and Northern Quest Resort & Casino, for providing
not only their sponsorship support, but also their wonderful
facility for our Summer Celebration, hotel accommodations
and golf contest volunteers. In addition, a big “thank you”
to Manito Golf & Country Club for allowing us to play on their
beautiful course.
