About 40 minutes south of downtown Atlanta, the Serenbe community has become a venue for some novel approaches to iconic dramatic performances. Starting next week, the Tennessee Williams classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” (http://www.atlantaplanit.com/events/event.php?eid=59988) will begin a two-week Serenbe Playhouse (http://www.serenbeplayhouse.com/) run at The Art Farm Stage. Although set in mid-20th century New Orleans, “Streetcar” in an outdoor setting gives off a timeless quality, Serenbe artistic director Brian Clowdus said on “City Lights.” “We’re taking a classic and reinventing it,” Clowdus told host Lois Reitzes. The role of Stanley Kowalski will be played by Matt Davis, who is known for his roles in the movie “Legally Blonde” and the CW television series “The Vampire Diaries.” Davis said this will be his first stage performance in some time, but he’s not dwelling on the legendary presence of Marlon Brando – who was nominated for an Oscar in the 1951 film version. What you’re really seeing is Stanley Kowalski and [Brando’s] genius as an actor is his ability to reveal a character.” Instead, Davis said he’s been listening to a 1970s Lincoln Center stage version of “Streetcar” starring Brando and Jessica Tandy to prepare for the role. “Streetcar” marks the halfway point in the 2015 Serenbe season.
