www.africa-safari.com Selous - Tanzania The Selous Game Reserve Our location One of the largest faunal reserves in the world, The Selous Game Reserve is located in southern Tanzania, close the eastern coast of Africa. Africa Safari Camp (Selous) is only a 250km drive from Dar es Salaam, the economic capital of Tanzania. Dar es Salaam airport has many international connections and you don’t have to worry at all, we will help you organize everything! We have contacts with excellent hotels, in case you need a overnight stay in Dar Salaam. It was named after Sir Frederick Selous, a famous British big game hunter and early conservationist. The UNESCO designated the reserve a World Heritage Site in 1982, due its diverse wildlife and undisturbed nature. The reserve covers a total area of 54,600 km2 and has additional buffer zones. Within the reserve no permanent human habitation or structures are permitted. All (human) entry and exit is carefully controlled by the Wildlife Division of the Tanzanian Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. Selous is unique for the number and diversity of animals that can be sighted. Elephants, hippopotami, African wild dogs, cape buffalos and crocodiles are relatively easy to find and photograph. Selous is a Game Reserve, so it enjoys many advantages over National Parks, including more freedom to explore and no time restrictions. Interesting places in the park include the Rufiji River, which flows into the Indian Ocean opposite Mafia Island, and the Stiegler Gorge, a canyon of 100m deep and 100m wide. Habitats include grassland, typical Acacia savanna, wetlands and extensive Miombo woodlands. The Selous Mtemere section has permission to drive off-road with open cars, bush-walk, boat safari and tour the villages. Even on busy days it does not get crowded, and you do not have to drive very far in Selous to enjoy the diversity of the wildlife - another advantage, unique to Selous There are two ways to get to Safari Selous Camp: by land or by air. If you have the time, come by road as it is a very scenic trip where you get to see the local villages, the forests and much more. The drive takes around 5 hours on good tarmac and sand roads. If you prefer to travel by air, it is a short 20 minute flight from Dar es Salaam, or 40 minutes from Zanzibar. A good combinations is for you come by car and return by air. We offer daily morning and afternoon flights, with Cesna Caravan 13 seater airplanes. All airplanes are new and very safe, strictly controlled by governmental and international institutions. A Safari in Selous is perfect to combine with a relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar. Please take into account that for this trip you will need more time and a slightly larger budget. The Serengeti The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania offers the absolute classic African safari setting. The grasslands make the Serengeti fantastic for spotting lion kills because you can see the whole spectacle clearly. The migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra starts here, and because it’s much larger than the Masai Mara in Kenya, the park is less densely populated with minibuses full of tourists. Ngorongoro Conservation Area The Ngorongoro Conservation area borders the Serengeti in northern Tanzania and includes the world’s largest crater which acts as a natural enclosure for almost every species of wildlife found in East Africa. This includes the very rare black rhino. The Ngorongoro Crater is where you’ll witness some of the densest population of wildlife in the world and it’s a truly amazing place for photographers. The Maasai s till live within the conservation area, and it’s also home to Olduvai where some of man’s earliest remains have been found. Tarangire National Park Tarangire, like Lake Manyara, is often combined with a visit to the larger, better known Serengeti and Ngorongoro parks. But during the dry season, (June to October) the river beds just teem with animals and it is well worth a trip. Tarangire is a good place to enjoy a walking safaris and an excellent place to view elephants. Be prepared to swat tsetse flies here, at certain times of the year they can get annoying. Lake Manyara Lake Manyara is a relatively small national park but it’s incredibly diverse. Lake Manyara boasts plenty of elephants, tree-climbing lions (getting rarer), leopards, giraffes and more than 400 species of birds including flocks of pink flamingos. Watching the Kilimanjaro At 19,336 feet, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is Africa’s highest peak. It is the world’s tallest walkable mountain, and what a walk it is. You go through 5 different climatic zones to reach the summit. Follow our advice and tips, and you should reach the “roof of Africa” in good health.
