Terry Gilliam/Starring: Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp Dr Parnassus has a secret: he traded his soul with the devil for endless youth, on the condition that he surrender his first born on her 16th birthday. As that date approaches for Valentina, Parnassus enters into a new deal with the devil: in a duel over five people’s souls, if Parnassus can prevent them from going over to the side of evil, the devil will release her from her fate. And so begins a race for Parnassus and Valentina’s suitor Tony, against time and against a series of surreal obstacles in which Parnassus has to face, and undo, the moral mistakes of his endless past. Thirst 18 Pontypool 15 23rd - 29th October CA 2008, 93mins Dir. Bruce McDonald/Starring: Stephen McHattie, Georgina Reilly, Lisa Houle Digibeta Anyone familiar with GREMLINS or Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast will know that every disaster needs a DJ. Cue down-on-his-luck shock jock Grant Mazzy, banished to the small Canadian town of Pontypool. Whilst doing his radio show, disturbing reports of bloody riots filter in from callers – and soon the zombie-like hordes are laying siege to his studio. Director McDonald toys with the horror genre, fashioning something fresh in the process. Based on screenwriter Tony Burgess’s novel this is horror with a great, big, verbose difference – not least in character actor Stephen McHattie’s motormouth performance. Home 15 23rd - 29th October KR 2009, 134mins Dir. Park Chan-wook/Starring: Kang ho Song, st Ok Vin Kim, Hae Sook Kim 24th and 25th October FR/BE/CH 2008, 98mins Dir. Ursula Meier/Starring: Isabelle Huppert, st Olivier Gourmet THIRST is a vampire film with a twist from the director of OLDBOY. The experiment fails, and, after seemingly coming back from the dead and being heralded as a hero, the priest begins to suffer a craving for human blood. As changes in his mind and body lead him further and further into acts of depravity and a complete transformation from an agent of good to a being of evil he can only cling desperately to his final shreds of humanity. A family’s peaceful existence is threatened when a busy highway is opened only meters away from their isolated house in the middle of nowhere. Refusing to move, Marthe, Michel and their three children find innovative ways to adapt to their new environment. They continue their happy-go-lucky routine despite the daily stress of hundreds of noisy speeding cars. But suspicions about the highway’s unknown long-term dangers cause family tension. Remaining in the disrupted household might not be so easy, but it’s still their home. 04 New releases An Education 05 New releases 12A The Vanishing of the Bees 12A Bunny and the Bull 15 The Cove 12A 30th October - 05th November UK 2009, 100mins Dir. Paul King/Starring: Edward Hogg, Simon Farnaby, Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt 28th, 19th Nov & 02nd Dec US 2009, 90mins Dir. Louie Psihoyos/Documentary Sixteen-year-old Jenny entertains fantasies of a Francophile future while conscientiously pursuing the education that her father Jack hopes will get her into Oxford. But the typical ‘60s family dynamic is rent asunder with the arrival of charismatic thirty-something David, who introduces her to an exciting new world of music, art and nightclubs. In the hands of Danish director Lone Scherfig (ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS) and writer Nick Hornby (HIGH FIDELITY), AN EDUCATION is a charming, funny yet provocative coming-of-age movie that reflects a staid post-war Britain that was on the uncertain brink of a cultural revolution. Honeybees pollinate one third of the food we consume, from apples to tea, but populations across the globe are declining dramatically. The causes are unknown, with theories ranging from poor weather and pests to pesticides. THE VANISHING OF THE BEES investigates this potentially catastrophic problem through interviews with scientists and beekeepers, in the process asking wider questions about modern intensive agricultural processes. Presented by The Co-operative as part of their Plan BEE programme. Find out after the screening what you can do to help halt the decline. For more information visit www.vanishingbees.co.uk The highly anticipated first feature by Mighty Boosh director Paul King is unlikely to disappoint fans of their surreal, anarchic comedy, and has enough imagination and invention to win some converts too. Stephen hasn’t left his house in months, since a disastrous trip around Europe with his best friend Bunny. When an infestation of mice throws his obsessive domestic routine into chaos, he starts to reflect on the adventure that his pal concocted, allegedly to help Stephen recover from a broken heart. But Bunny’s idea of a rollicking good time proved at odds with Stephen’s yen for cultural improvement and before long things took a turn for the bizarre. THE COVE is an astounding piece of investigative journalism with the heart of an action thriller. Led by Louie Psihoyos, leader of the Ocean Preservation Society, and Richard O’Barry, an internationally recognized authority on dolphin training, this eco-pic follows a high-tech dive team on a mission to discover the truth about the international dolphin capture trade as practised in Taji, Japan. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras, the team uncovers how a small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide. Ethan and Joel Coen/Starring: Michael Stuhlbarg, Sari Wagner Lennick, Richard Kind Based on Jon Ronson’s bestseller, this funny, eyeopening story reveals a bizarre secret US military unit trained in paranormal techniques. Reporter Bob Wilton stumbles across the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady, a Special Forces operator on a mind-boggling mission in Iraq. Cassady claims to be a former psychic soldier, part of a squad of new age ‘warrior monks’. Their powers include the ability to read the enemy’s thoughts, pass through solid walls and kill goats just by staring at them. Now the founder of the squad, Bill Django, has gone missing, and Cassady’s mission is to track him down. London 1818: a secret love affair begins between a 23-year-old poet, John Keats, and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne, an outspoken student of fashion. They were initially at odds with one another, he thinking her a stylish minx, and she unimpressed by literature in general. But when Keats’ younger brother falls ill, he is touched by Fanny’s efforts to help and the two grow close. By the time her alarmed mother finds out about their attachment, the relationship has an unstoppable momentum. A sumptuous and wholly triumphant return to filmmaking for Jane Campion (THE PIANO). Seventeen-year-old Richard Samuels spends his days skipping school and dreaming of the bright lights of Broadway. He gets his big break when he happens upon Orson Welles and his fledgling Mercury Theatre company. Richard impresses Welles with an impromptu audition and lands a bit part in the Mercury’s forthcoming run of Julius Caesar. With Welles’s womanizing taking priority over rehearsals, chaos and calamity mark the production from the start. Before long, opening night has arrived and Richard will discover the terrible secrets of show business. A SERIOUS MAN is more of a FARGO affair than BURN AFTER READING FOR Joel and Ethan Coen as they bring their famously wicked sense of humour to an everyday tale about a moral man who sees the world inexplicably turn against him in this darkest of comedies. Larry Nidus is a good man. He is a loving husband, a committed father, and a dedicated professor who always does the fair and just thing in the face of daily temptations. But one day, everything starts to go wrong. Faced with the challenge of watching this it is impossible not to laugh as we contemplate Larry’s plight in a world with no silver linings that might just seem uncomfortably familiar to us all… 06 New releases Tales From The Golden Age 07 MUSIC FILMS 12A 05th, 06th & 09th December RO/FR 2009, 131mins Dir. Loana Uricaru, Hanno Höfer, Razvan Marculescu Starring: Tania Popa, Liliana Mocanu TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE is an unconventional personal history (from the people behind 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS) of the late communist period in Romania, told through its urban myths. Comic, bizarre, surprising, these myths drew on the often surreal events of everyday life under the communist regime and display the bold humor that kept Romanians alive through it’s darker years. TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE aims to re-capture that mood, portraying the survival of a nation having to face every day the twisted logic of a dictatorship. The Posters Came From The Walls Thursday 03rd December - 8:40pm (screening tbc) Dir. Jeremy Deller & Nick Abrahams, UK 2008, 72mins Documentary/Showing on a digital format In Russia, May 9 is Victory Day, a national holiday. It’s also the birthday of Dave Gahan, lead singer with Depeche Mode, and a group of Muscovite fans have declared it Dave Day, gathering together to celebrate the group with homemade banners, mass sing-alongs and club nights. In Russia and countries of the former Soviet Union, the band’s music has been treasured since it was only available on illegal bootlegged cassettes in the 1980s, and it formed the soundtrack of the march toward freedom those countries embarked upon following the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the UK, the church of St Edward King and Martyr in Cambridge holds services for goths where they play Depeche Mode records. Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller and filmmaker Nicholas Abrahams tell these and other stories of faith and devotion from around the world in this fascinating and inspired documentary about fandom, which is at turns bizarre, funny, sad and often touching. New York Doll Friday 27th November - 11pm Dir. Greg Whiteley, US 2006, 12A, 74mins Documentary NEW YORK DOLL is a rock documentary about the 2004 reunion of Arthur “Killer” Kane with his former band-mates from 70’s glam-rock group The New York Dolls. His reunion with his former bandmates at Morrissey’s Meltdown festival in 2004 makes this a moving and poignant documentary. Featuring interviews with many rock luminaries including Chrissie Hynde, Bob Geldof and Morrissey, NEW YORK DOLL is director Greg Whiteley’s first feature film. An exhilarating and moving documentary about one of rock’s great unsung heroes. UNCUT 08 Special Events and Repeats The Room CERT TBC 17th October Dir. Tommy Wiseau/Starring: Tommy Wiseau, Juliette Danielle, Greg Sestero US 2003, 99mins We must admit we scoffed a tad when first asked about THE ROOM. The fact is we were wrong. THE ROOM has been screening to sell out audiences in LA for the last six years. At its recent UK premier at the Prince Charles Cinema in London celebs like Graham Lineham and Charlie Brooker could be spotted catching their fix of what The Guardian called a mix of “Tennessee Williams, Ed Wood and R. Kelly’s TRAPPED IN A CLOSET”. Sculpture in Painting Visit www.theroomuk.net to find out more. An American black comedy about love and passion, betrayal and lies. Jean-Francois Richet/Starring: Vincent st Cassel, Ludvine Sagnier, Mathieu Amalric 01st November Dir. Chris Atkins Documentary Part Two of the César-winning modern gangster classic starring Vincent Cassel (LA HAINE). As Mesrine continues to evade and frustrate the law, he becomes increasingly burdened by his own bloated celebrity, and begins to question his thrilling but lonely existence. In a continuation of his Raging Bull-style metamorphosis, Cassel concludes his world-class performance that propels Richet’s ultra-stylish films into the same league as benchmark gangster classics such as ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA and THE GODFATHER 1 and 2. STARSUCKERS (the latest film from the BAFTAnominated director of the Blair-baiting TAKING LIBERTIES) is a dark, satirical polemic that examines the psychological reasons behind our irrational obsession with fame. Rather than being a film about celebrities, it’s a journey through the problems that over-consumption of celebritydominated media has inflicted on us. This is no hectoring rant or long slow meditation, it’s a blisteringly paced, anarchic ride which uses humour and mischief to expose the immoral, corrupt and illegal practices of some of the biggest names in the media industry. In case you missed it there’s another chance to see Part One (KILLER INSTINCT) on the 12th, 13th and 16th September.
