I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Heidi Weaver will be the principal of Millard South High School beginning with the 2014-2015 school year! Mrs. Weaver’s long history with Millard South will help preserve our great traditions and culture. Her leadership skills and unique style will allow her to use this transition as an opportunity to embrace change and keep our school on the path of continuous improvement. I have asked Mrs. Weaver to take a few moments to informally introduce herself and her family to all of you. Stay involved and let’s help our students finish the school year in a strong manner. The professionals shared technical tips and wisdom from their collective 900 years of professional experience with our very own MSHS orchestra students. It was a moving and memorable experience. The Patriot Press Students Page 5 World Language Week All World Language students participated in World Language Week at Millard South. During the first part of the week, the students listened to speakers addressing the importance of learning other languages and learning about other cultures. Those speakers included Chelsea Forehead, Mick McGuire, Joey Mollner, Ross Pesek, Sgt. Alan Reyes, Armando Salgado, Trevor Schave, and Brianna Soukup. During World Language Week our students also attended a variety of culture and language sessions. The students experienced different music, food, dances, crafts, games, cultural information, and trivia from around the world. French student Siany Edwards won a statewide competition sponsored by the Nebraska International Languages Association. Her artwork addressing the theme “Music is the Language for All” will be featured on the cover of the association’s conference booklet next Fall. Students were also given the opportunity to enter a Millard South essay contest, a poster contest, and a video contest. The Patriot Press Students World Language Week Page 6 The Patriot Press Students Page 7 Discrimination Elimination Diversity Club promoted the elimination of racial discrimination by asking students and staff to wear blue. Due to spring break, they observed the international day -March 21st -- a week early. On this date in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa. The protestors were speaking out against the apartheid "pass laws." The General Assembly has since observed March 21st as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, with the color blue symbolizing the peace and harmony that can exist when human rights are observed and protected. The Patriot Press Please congratulate the following students on their SUCCESS at State DECA over spring break! 995 students competed for the top 3 places in over 30 business categories; the Patriots dominated at State! 2014 – 2015 NE DECA Vice President Jordan Johnson! Field Events started off with Allison Devries and Mackenzie Burk setting personal bests in the high jump. Eleni Knapp followed this up with a personal best in the shot put. Madi Stearnes set a personal record in discus. Two of these four ladies are freshman, one sophomore, and one junior. We have a great foundation of a team with these young ladies for years to come. Not to be outdone, the track events went off with a bang, literally. (track humor) The distance medley relay of Taylor Somers, Tatum Stenger, Emily Bedford, and Katie Spencer ran their way to a gold medal and the 41st fastest time in the nation. One freshman, one sophomore, and two juniors in that group. Even though we had some great performances, the thing I am most proud of is that our girls cheered for each other the entire meet. Not one time did we have anyone just sitting in the tent. Even those who did not compete made their way up to Millard North to watch their teammates. This is a special group of girls. I must thank Mr. Kerkman for Camille Fowler. Not only is she the anchor on our 4x1 team, but she is a competitor who knows what it takes to win a State Title (or 3). Her attitude and work ethic is contagious and only adds to our track team and our goals. Also, she is super fast. Thanks to swimming for Madison Asche, volleyball for Madi Stearnes and Allison Devries, and basketball for Tatum Stenger (also volleyball player), Paxton Throne and any other sport who has a girl competing on the track team. I thank you all coaches for your support of other programs and making these girls great competitors. We have a group of young ladies ready to compete at the highest level this year!! Dustin Llewellyn Track and Cross Country Coach Boys track team placed 3rd overall at the relays this weekend. The highlight of the meet was: 4x1600m relay Reno Law Nate Wendt Dan Shriver Waylon Matson (their time placed them second in the nation) 4x400 relay Blayne Johannes Terance Johnson Conner Menard Reno Law (Pulled out a victory in the last 50m of the race) Michael Edmundson Varsity Boys Head Track Coach The Patriot Press Students Page 12 The Patriot Press Students Page 13 Chess Club The Chess Club competed at the State Chess Tournament last Saturday. Millard South played some great matches and came in 2nd place in the unrated section of the tournament. Participants included: John Adam, Austin Hizer, Mason Johnson, and Kevin Spohn. As of this printing, 501 students have registered for a total of 933 exams. This year, AP exams will be conducted in accordance with the College Board's established testing calendar from May 5-16. We are working very diligently to identify potential conflicts with testing for our students, as May is also a busy time of year for many of our students who are involved with NSAA sanctioned and school-sponsored activities. Students with potential conflicts are encouraged to visit with Mr. Pinkall to determine if arrangements need to be made for a student to test during the late testing window College Board provides from May 2123. The list represents a compilation of some of the items and materials our teachers have told us would be beneficial and useful to their students in their classrooms. In future issues we will be recognizing and thanking people who donate. We also look forward to reporting back how donated items are being used in the classroom. Putting together this event is a major undertaking and we need your help! We are still in need of one or two people to Chair the Concessions and Site portions of this project. These wonderful chair people will need everyone's help in a variety of arenas. We will need to find sponsors and program advertisers, ticket sellers, concessions workers, ushers, parking attendants, folks to work with the judges and many more positions I'm sure I haven't listed. Please contact Mr. Barker (rbarker@mpsomaha.org) if you can help. If you are interested in volunteering to be on one of the committees, check the Booster Website at www.patriotsmusic.org for volunteer sign-ups or contact one of the 2 people listed above about a particular talent or connections that you have that will make this event better than ever. This link is a list of potential Corporate Sponsors or Advertisers. Please check it out. Our best sales are when there is a personal connection to any of these places. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc? key=0AuTLEQ5ZlvGvdGU5OVJaNXpNVjJPNUdWOE85azhMeFE&usp=sharing Last year we hosted this event and it was a very successful evening. This will be an opportunity for us to expand our fund raising possibilities more than we ever have. We have made this an annual show and the main project for the Music Boosters to provide additional financial support to all the music students in our school. We are constantly looking for service revenue sources for the Boosters instead of selling merchandise. DCI has tremendous potential in that area. Election of officers will be done by e-mail this year. Please let us know by April 12 th if you are interested in running for Vice-President or Treasurer. Both jobs have a manual from previous leaders to make the job pretty darn easy. Voting will take place from the comfort of your computer, so watch for that invitation. We will also be working concessions for a few track meets this spring so please get on the Music Booster website and volunteer to help. Please let us know how we can count on you for your help before or during these events! Lorie Thomas, President loriethomas24@cox.net The Patriot Press District Music Contest preparations are well underway. Solos, duets, various small groups, Varsity Choir, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and South on Stage will be performing. The District Music Contest will be hosted this year at Elkhorn South High School on April 23-26. Watch for a detailed schedule of performance times to be available to students and posted on our website as soon as we know those times. Band Families can check the band website for weekly updates and news of upcoming activities and rehearsal schedules. We encourage the students to visit this site as well so they can be prepared for the rehearsals. There are a number of links to other great websites that the students will find helpful. Jazz Band 1 received a “Superior” rating and placed and Jazz Band 2 received “Excellent” rating and placed 2nd in their division at the Bellevue East Jazz Festival on March 9th. Outstanding soloists included Blake Andersen, Zach Warneke, Ben Wellwood and Grant Thomas. The Band Concert held on March 6th was an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate the skills they are building in music performance and understanding. The Concert Band Festival at Bellevue West High School was on March 27 th and the Concert and Symphonic Bands received some excellent critiques from the judges. The Winter Guard competed at 6 different contests during the season. Millard South hosted the HWAA Winter Guard Championships on Saturday, March 22nd. This was the largest contest of the season. Millard South Revolution placed 7th in Independent Regional A and Patriots Pride placed 6th in Scholastic A. Brittany Gates and Cassi Lambrecht, from Millard South, were the Individual Ensemble Winners from Scholastic A. Congratulations on a tremendous season and thanks to everyone who helped host the contest! Attached is a picture of both guards from Millard South and a picture of the crowd during the retreat and award ceremonies. Page 23 The Patriot Press The 2014-15 Color Guard auditions will take place April 28 th at Millard South. Any student who will be at Millard South next year is eligible to audition. Workshops are scheduled to help students prepare. This is an exciting group that is particularly suitable for those who have dance, baton or flag experience. Experience is not necessary and we’ve had many students become experts even beyond our program. Those selected will join the Millard South Band on the field next fall. If you have any questions please call the Band Office at 402-715-8525. Drum Major workshops and tryouts will occur during the week of April 28 th. Any student currently in band can audition. There are lots of summer music camps that we encourage the students to attend. See the Band Handbook or contact the Band Office. Band Camp will start on July 24 & 25 for students new to the band. Band Camp will run July 28 – August 1, 2014. We will have summer sectionals once a week on Mondays for the wind players and Color Guard and on Tuesdays for the drumline beginning June 2 nd.
