MDOC NEWS Newsletter of Manchester and District Orienteering Club APRIL 2013 Nick Taylor at Bramhall Park (Photo: Steve Lang) CompassSport Cup Yvette Baker Trophy Winter events JK - Chilterns NEWS We have successfully renewed our Clubmark accreditation for another four years. Ed Nicholas, BOF Development Manager, writes: “The club have built up an very impressive submission and have detailed with accuracy the high amount of development work they do in the Manchester area. The club should be very pleased with their folder and congratulations on their work done to date.” This is a testimony to the hard work of many members of the club, but especially to Rae Lomas who had to put the file together with extra care as we were picked to have our application file subject to extra monitoring. Renewal of Clubmark is very important for the club, as it shows we have consistent good practice and standards in working with children and young people. Clubmark is a cross-sport scheme and is awarded to clubs that comply with minimum operating standards in four areas: the playing program, duty of care and safeguarding and protecting children and young people, knowing your club and the community, and in club management. Congratulations to our juniors who produced a brilliant performance to get through to the final of the Yvette Baker Trophy. The heat was at Holker Woodlands near Cartmel on 10th March. Lakeland (891) were ahead of Manchester (886) who narrowly beat West Cumberland (885) into third and then South Ribble (840) fourth. As Lakeland were in the top 5 in the Final of the YBT last year both Lakeland and Manchester progress to the final in July. Vicky Thornton co-ordinated the team and clearly managed to infect them with her enthusiasm. However we will probably not send a team to the final as several of our best juniors have already entered the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon on that weekend. Congratulations to John Kewley for winning the 2-day Elite Trail-O event at the JK. Others in the prizes were Dave Mawdsley (2nd), Andrew Gregory (2nd) and Sue Birkinshaw (3rd) in the Sprint, and Ben Dempsey (1st) and Andrew Gregory (2nd) in the 2-day Individual competition. Derek Allison has been appointed as Co-ordinator for the Lakes-5 multi-day event next year, and the detailed planning and organization are now proceeding. As a club we shall be making a major contribution to the event, probably doing the computing, but we may well have other responsibilities. JK 2015 is being held in the Lake District. NWOA are looking for a Local Co-ordinator to work with the Major Events Manager who will shortly be appointed by BOF. Anyone interested should contact the NWOA Chairman Bob Roach. The first event of the Summer evening series will be at Teggs Nose, Macclesfield on Thursday 25th April, organized by Rae Lomas. Tony Wagg is co-ordinating the MDOC events in the series, which is put on jointly by MDOC and DEE. The next Newsletter will be in June. Please send news, photos etc. to Andrew Gregory. 2 CompassSport Cup Vicky Thornton, club captain writes: “We had such a good club turnout and some great performances. Congratulations especially to our two course winners: Tom Fellbaum and John Britton. LOC were 2nd in the CSC last year and had already automatically qualified for the next round. That left us battling for second place as the results unfolded on the day against WCOC in order to qualify. .... HOWEVER .... DRAT!!! .... WE JUST MISSED OUT GETTING THROUGH BY JUST ..... 7 POINTS !! .... Despite this it was in fact a great day out in the Lakes and a really fun event on a ‘better than expected area’ with plenty of mental and physical challenges to be had on all courses.” The team results were: LOC 2367 WCOC 2231 MDOC 2224 SROC 2069 DEE 2045 The individual MDOC results are shown below with the 25 scores contributing towards the total score, shown in bold type. The team consisted of myself, the McCann's, Laura Hindle, Ben Martland, the Dempsey's, Alistair Thornton, Rebecca Humpreys and Lauren McNeil. Everyone did well and we had some great top 3 results with Alistair Thornton (1st) and Alex McCann (2nd) on the green, me (1st) on the light green, James McCann (3rd) and Lauren McNeil (3rd out of the girls) on the orange, and Ben Dempsey (3rd out of the boys) on the yellow. In the end it was enough to finish in a close 2nd place out of only 4 teams as DEE didn't have enough competitors, with LOC just ahead of us by 5 points and MDOC narrowly beating WCOC into 2nd by 1 point! As LOC finished in the top 5 of the final last year MDOC progress to the final! Well done to all the juniors who competed. (Its ironic because MDOC probably won't even send a team to the final as most of the juniors are competing in the Saunders Mountain Marathon which is held over the same weekend!) An excellent JK, revisiting the attractive and runnable woods of the Hambleden estate near Henley for both one of the Individual days and for the Relays. The Sprint event was on the campus of the University of Reading, and the other Individual day at the slightly less runnable woodland of Cold Ash near Newbury. The weekend was possibly more memorable for the fine weather but very cold winds. Good conditions for running, but very cold for standing around before and afterwards. We had a good turnout of club members and some excellent runs. In the Sprint, on the Whiteknights campus of the University of Reading, Dave Mawdsley had an excellent run to come 2nd out of 33 in M70, Andrew Gregory was also 2nd on M75, and on W75 Sue Birkinshaw was 3rd and Margaret Gregory 4th. On W50 Heather Fellbaum was 5th and Vicky Thornton 6th. Rae Lomas was 6th on W70, John Britton 6th on M60, Laura Hindle 8th on W16 and Liam Corner 9th on M40. The first day of the Individual event was on the Hambleden estate with the rolling hills and dry valleys characteristic of the Chilterns. The area was very fast with little undergrowth, but many small features so care was needed. The second day near Newbury was a more typical woodland with some brashings and undergrowth and many vegetation boundaries and dry ditches. Over the two days of the Individual events, Ben Dempsey won M12B, Andrew Gregory 2nd in M75L, Vicky Thornton 4th in W50L and John Britton 6th on M60L. On the very tough M18E course Alex McCann just beat Alistair Thornton by 3 seconds on the first day, but had a really excellent run on the second day to finish 7th overall to Alistair’s still very good 13th place. Other top 10 placings were Sue Birkinshaw 5th on W75, Kate Bryant 8th on W60L, Alice Fellbaum 9th in W20E and Alan Poxon 9th in M55S. For the Relays we were back to Hambleden. Injuries unfortunately caused several changes to Vicky Thornton’s carefully chosen teams, but we still had some very good results. In the Veteran Women’s W165+ class Vicky Thornton came in first on the first leg, followed by Julie Brook and Heather Fellbaum, finishing in fourth position overall. In the same class Jane McCann, Jan Ellis and Kate Bryant also ran well to come seventh. In the Women’s Short class Carolyn and Laura Hindle and Alice Fellbaum all ran good legs to bring the team in fifth. We had entered three teams in the new Ultravets class, where the combined ages of team members must exceed 210 years (with female competitors counting for an extra 10 years). Dave Mawdsley, Andrew Gregory and Chris Rostron came 5th, and the other two teams 13th (Trevor Roberts, Rae and Pete Lomas) & 14th (Ian Watson, Sue Birkinshaw and Grahame Crawshaw). The summary table of results shows the positions on the first three days, and the overall position summing days 2 & 3. 5 JK Results summary Sprint (n) Ben Dempsey James McCann Matthew Fellbaum Tom McCann Alex McCann Alistair Thornton John Dempsey Thomas Fellbaum Nick Taylor Andrew Stimson Liam Corner Trevor Hindle Steve Dempsey David McCann Andy Thornton Stephen Fellbaum Ray Humphreys John Kewley Alan Ogden Alan Poxon John Britton Ian Gilliver Richard Gibbs Chris Rostron Ian Watson Chris Kirkham Peter Ross Dave Bryant Trevor Roberts Grahame Crawshaw Dave Mawdsley Peter Lomas Andrew Gregory Laura Hindle Carolyn Hindle Rebecca Humphreys Alice Fellbaum Jane McCann Vicky Thornton Hazel Hindle Heather Fellbaum Marie Roberts Kate Bryant Jillyan Dobby Alison Doyle Julie Brook Irene Crawshaw Jan Ellis Rae Lomas Sue Birkinshaw Margaret Gregory M12 M14 M16 (36) (71) (72) M18E (59) M21E (100) M40 (61) M45 (138) M50 (140) M60 (82) M65 (86) M70 (33) M75 (20) W16 (44) W18E (43) W45 W50 (97) (91) W55 W60 (67) (48) W65 (44) W70 W75 (15) (10) Pos. 19 19 14 32 40 36 9 28 24 63 67 80 84 8 61 75 12 48 32 56 55 2 22 2 8 29 24 6 35 5 27 35 15 44 24 36 15 6 3 4 Individual (n) M12B (7) M14A (60) M16A (67) M18E (40) M21E (95) M21S (35) M40L (61) M45L (123) M50L (125) M50S (65) M55S (41) M60L (104) M60S (41) M65L (112) M65S M70L (27) (47) M75L W16A W18E (35) (43) (37) W20E W45L W50L (19) (77) (62) W55L W60L (58) (52) W65L (45) W70L W75 (20) (16) 6 Overall day 2 1 1 33 45 19 25 48 46 7 11 13 12 27 20 50 93 11 14 89 109 10 14 27 38 91 56 73 92 114 31 28 9 15 6 11 68 88 33 38 30 37 51 60 71 81 46 83 15 16 12 17 18 22 2 2 11 17 27 34 29 35 9 13 4 5 41 45 38 8 20 19 18 42 46 22 20 22 4 5 4 10 13 day 3 1 34 15 52 8 14 29 29 11 72 11 28 56 92 40 43 7 4 62 33 26 52 71 18 16 11 19 3 3 23 25 9 37 3 41 17 4 23 45 31 5 11 JK Relay results (Team position after each leg in brackets) Women’s Short (37 teams) 3.8k/2.8k/3.8k 5 Carolyn Hindle 30:29 (15), Laura Hindle 21:44 (7), Alice Fellbaum 29:29 (5) Senior Men 120+ (57 teams) 6.6k/5.1k/6.6k 15 Liam Corner 41:39 (14), John Britton 35:43 (16), Steve Dempsey 44:22 (15) 34 Dave McCann 53:19 (40), Andy Thornton 42:41 (36), Trevor Hindle 56:45 (34) - Stephen Fellbaum 56:42 mp, Alan Ogden 42:15 - , John Kewley 61:46 mp Veteran Women W165+ (17 teams) 3.8k/2.8k/3.8k 4 Vicky Thornton 28:21 (1), Julie Brook 36:33 (4), Heather Fellbaum 34:49 7 Jane McCann 36:52 (9), Jan Ellis 32:34 (7), Kate Bryant 39:49 (4) (7) Intermediate Men M48- (24 teams) 4.5k/2.1k/4.5k 5 Alistair Thornton 23:34 (1), Ben Dempsey 17:17 (8), Alex McCann 25:55 (5) 10 Matthew Fellbaum 28:30 (10), James McCann 15:46 (12), John Dempsey 26:03 (10) Ultra Vets M/W210+ (26 teams) 3.8k/2.8k/3.8k 5 Dave Mawdsley 41:24 (15), Andrew Gregory26:45 (6), Chris Rostron 35:28 (5) 13 Trevor Roberts 36:29 (9), Rae Lomas 41:43 (12), Pete Lomas 49:48 (13) 14 Ian Watson 37:07(10), Sue Birkinshaw 47:03 (15), Graham Crawshaw 48:14 (14) Mixed Ad Hoc (98 teams) 2.1k/3.9k/4.9k 71 Hazel Hindle 21:50 (24), Marie Roberts 39:38 (43), Tim Sowood 49:50 (71) JK Trail-O John Kewley won the 2-day Elite Trail-O competition, which was held on the first two days of the weekend at Whiteknights and Hambledon. This discipline requires very careful thinking about correct control placement, and the ability to make these difficult decisions as quickly as possible. Twenty competitors took part in the Elite event on both days, so the competition was quite intense. This is a very informal low-key event involving running and orienteering clubs in and around the Peak District. Teams of usually 10 runners cover a course of about 100 km in total. The event will be on Saturday 9th June, centred on Bakewell. Steve Lang is planning the course, and it looks as if I shall be organizing and co-ordinating our team(s), although I should be very happy for someone else to volunteer! If you are interested in running please let me know, and we shall also require help with marshalling changeover points and the logistics of transporting runners to the start or from the finish of their leg. It usually provides a very pleasant and sociable day out in the Peak District. Andrew Gregory 9 SATURDAY MORNINGS! A new initiative for our winter Saturday morning events this year involved the idea of a mass start and head-to-head racing on a course with butterfly loops. Courses planned were the usual White, Yellow, Orange and Light Green. Those who wished could opt for a 2-part race, doing the Orange course first and then a mass start of 6 runners at a time on the Light Green course. The time taken for the Orange course determined which group of 6 you started in on the Light Green. The Light Green had three butterfly loops from a common point, and the 6 runners did the loops in different orders. The example shown is one of the 6 Light Green courses from Prestwich Forest Park, planned by Andrew Gregory The other areas used were Chorlton Water Park planned by David McCann and Bramhall Park planned by Steve Lang. The idea was quite successful and enjoyed by those who took part. It also created considerable interest for the spectators, trying to work out who was leading. Not many competitors took part in all three events, but of those who did Rik Griffin was clearly the overall winner. However individual event winners were Steve Lang at Chorlton, Nick Taylor at Bramhall and Liam Corner at Prestwich. A significant number of competitors just ran the Light Green on its own, showing that there is a good demand for a course at this level in our more informal events. Alison Doyle co-ordinated the series of events and Sue Birkinshaw, who suggested the idea, sorted out the mass starts.
