Potentate’s Message
have made many great friends and have been blessed to
meet so many of you, the greatest Shriners in the world!
First, I would like
to thank the nobles
and ladies of Dunn
Shrine Club for all
their help in making
the Fall Ceremonial a
success, and to all the
units and clubs who
contributed their time,
talents and resources
to make Friday evening so enjoyable. It
was a little nippy on
Friday night but the
food and fellowship was enjoyed by all those who took
part. Thanks again to the members of Team 2012 for
their outstanding support all weekend and for a great
hospitalit y room on Saturday.
“Honoring our Past- Looking to our Future” is the
slogan I picked for this year. I have tried to fulfill the first
part at our events this year and together we can work to
accomplish the latter half and ensure a successful future
for our fraternit y. I hope that each of you will continue
your service to our temple and our philanthropy.
I thank Illustrious Sir Albert H. Parker for his encouragement and advice, Illustrious Sir Brack Wilson
for believing in me and appointing me Outer Guard; I
also thank all the nobles and ladies who have supported
me over the years and my fellow Divan members for
your support, advice and friendship.
A special thanks is extended to my business partner,
Noble Randy Ward, a member of Sudan Shriners, and
his lady, Shannon, for assuming more and more responsibilities as I advanced through the progressive Divan
line and especially during the past year as I served as Potentate, when he assumed enormous responsibilit y with
our business, which permitted me to better discharge
my duties as Potentate of Sudan Shriners.
It was my honor to name this ceremonial after Noble Paul Neighbors who has served our fraternit y well
over many years. It was also a great pleasure to have
in attendance the Grand Master of Masons of North
Carolina, Most Worshipful Robert E. Gresham and his
lady Carolyn as well as the Deput y Grand Master, the
Senior Grand Warden and the Junior Grand Deacon. It
has been one of my goals this year to strengthen our relationship with our Grand Lodge and I believe we have
made much progress.
Finally, I give a most special thanks to my wife, Traci, and my children, Kayla, Sarah Elizabeth and Emily
for their support and allowing me to be away so much
over the last years. Without your understanding and encouragement I could not have served.
Again, thank you for allowing me to serve you as
your Potentate this year.
I would also like to congratulate the new nobles who
joined our ranks and I challenged them all to become
active in our clubs and units. We all need to make them
feel welcome in our fraternit y and I am depending on
each of you to help us find more “qualit y” men to become Shriners. Team Membership has worked very hard
this year to retain our members, however it appears that
we will again suffer a loss in membership and Imperial
may very well drop below 300,000. We must have the
support of each of you to reverse this trend and help
grow our fraternit y to its greatest potential.
May God bless you, our fraternit y and our philanthropy!

Honoring our Past - Looking to our Future
This year has gone by rapidly and it has been a very
rewarding and challenging experience. This will conclude my 18th consecutive year in an official capacit y for
our temple. I have always tried to do my best and it has
been my pleasure to serve you and our great fraternit y. I

Message
from examination and treatment, some are chosen by their peers
to serve as a trustee or member of the divan, but no matter where
one serves, no matter in what capacit y, no matter how much
time and resources one contributes, there is not one insignificant
contribution because it takes a wide variet y of talent to make it
all successful.
Shriners International and its 195 temples and Shriners
Hospitals for Children are serious operations. It takes all of us
to make all this successful. So as we begin a new Sudan year, I
ask each of you to examine what you can do. We have too many
each year that do not pay their dues or fail to pay in a timely manner. This causes financial problems in your temple operation.
I ask you to do what you can to help your temple continue as a
successful and premier temple of Shriners International.
I’m sure you immediately noticed a change in the traditional
layout of the Red Fez Magazine
with ads on the inside front and
back pages. These ads offer substantial funds to assist with our
Public Relations Operation, including expenses incurred and
magazine production cost.
As Sudan Shriners enters
2013 and looks back on 2012,
perhaps it’s a good time to review a short history. Your temple
finished 2012 with the budget in the “black”; however, that does
not mean we can sit back and coast. For another year we have
experienced a net loss of membership and with that loss a continued decline not only in members but in much needed income.
We still have a lot of work needed on our headquarters. The
main or older portion of the building was completed in 1951
and has experienced the ravages of time. Several hurricanes and
other storms have damaged the structure and although repairs
have been made, damage and time take their toll.
Several members, their ladies and friends have contributed
time, resources and expertise to make repairs and improvements
on the building. Like many people and organizations, income is
the major “road block” to making all the needed improvements.
A short list of what is needed: new carpet on the stage (not sure
anyone knows how long the current carpet has been there - I’ve
been a member 37 years and I think it was there then); painting
several areas; railings in the auditorium bleacher seating; better lighting and sound systems for the auditorium and perhaps
downstairs; handicapped access to the entrances and interior areas; elevator renovation (it is the original and has had its own
problems); brick and mortar repair; and I’m sure other problems
can be found. Although some repairs and renovations have been
done in the recent past, it’s well past time to make some more
decisions.
Illustrious Sir Steve Norris, Potentate for 2012, devoted
enormous time toward fulfilling his duties during 2012. Miles
and miles and hours and hours have been spent on travel and
hours and hours were required on the telephone and computer.
Potentate Norris has had a good year and I congratulate him and
Lady Traci. I know you join me in expressing sincere gratitude
for their service.
Chief Rabban Ken Bennett and Lady Juanita are prepared
and ready to step up as we enter another year of service to Sudan
Shriners, Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Noble Ken is well prepared to lead as our new Potentate.
He is dedicated and capable and Sudan is fortunate to have him
assume the helm of leadership.
What can each of us do to assure continued success of our
great fraternit y and philanthropy? We can do whatever our individual capabilities permit. There is no such thing as insignificant
service. We all contribute however our talents and resources
allow. Some have time and resources to serve as club officers,
others as unit officers, others as committee chairmen, some as
fundraiser chairmen, some transport hospital patients to and

Sudan was honored at our Fall Ceremonial in Dunn with
special guests from the North Carolina Grand Lodge. North
Carolina Grand Master Bob Gresham, Master Elect-Dewey Preslar; Senior Grand Warden, Dalton Mayo; and Past Grand Master Gene Jernigan spent the weekend with our Sudan nobilit y.
They attended numerous events and gatherings on Saturday.
The Grand Master addressed members of the Sudan Divan at
breakfast. It was onto the parade, the Moslem Feast and then the
second section for the new candidates. He then made a short presentation to the Nobles and ladies at the Fez and Rose ceremony
that evening. A great time of Masonic sharing was had by all.

For the election of Potentate, Divan Officers, Trustees, Imperial Council Representatives, SASA Representatives and New Candidates: the 2013 Budget Approval and the transaction of such
other business as may properly come before the temple.
Imperial Bylaws Article 325.11: Election Regulations
(a) Electioneering. A candidate for an elected office in a Shrine temple may print, publish and circulate during the year he is seeking the elected office, a resume’ consisting of
his educational background, his vocational history, and his Masonic and Shrine record. Except as provided in the prior sentence, the printing, publication, circulating or
distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a unit, club, Noble, or group of Nobles,
suggesting, recommending, opposing, or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is
prohibited.
(b) Expenditure Prohibited. The expenditure of money for gifts, favors, or entertainment on behalf of a candidate for elected office is prohibited.
(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the Imperial
Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new
election.
(d) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual meeting or any election, the temple Recorder shall mail to each member
a notice thereof containing this section.

Noble John Moore awarded “The
Order of the Long Leaf Pine”
are some of the guidelines by which recipients are selected
for this award. Moore also was named Pitt Communit y College’s 2011 Distinguished Alumnus in November 2011.
Noble John Moore is a great asset to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. There is not a night that goes by when
John hosts the his famous “Sock Hop”, that Sudan Shriner
Clubs, Units, Shrine events, and the Shriners Hospitals for
Children are mentioned on the show. He is definitely helping the cause of “Love to the Rescue”. Noble John has served
as the parade announcer for the Sudan Ceremonial Parades,
and most recently has the responsibilities as Master of Ceremonies for the formal events at Sudan Ceremonials. Congratulations Noble John Moore for a well deserved award.

In late April of this year, an assortment of Noble John
Moore’s family and friends gathered at the Plank Road Steakhouse in Farmville to salute his 40 years in radio and television broadcasting…or so he thought. A wide variet y of
guests, some longtime advertisers like Noble Mike Robinson
of Robinson Jewelers in Greenville, some co-workers from
the radio and television stations Moore has been associated
with through the years, and some old friends family members shared stories about his career in broadcasting which
began in October 1972 at WNCT AM, sister station of 107.9
WNCT FM where Moore now hosts his weekly broadcast of
“John Moore’s Sock Hop” on Friday nights from 6:00-11:00
pm.
There was much laughter shared and a few tears shed
over the stories told over the course of the evening. The
highlight of the evening was when Representative Edith Warren, NC House District 8, shared stories of the hard work
and good things that happened during the time following the
flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd in 1999. At that time
Moore was teamed up with Jerry Wayne and Donna Kelly
for Jerry, John and Donna on 107.9 WNCT FM. Representative Warren shared some stories about the good that was
done and thanked John for his role in making things happen.
She then spoke about how much she loves the Sock Hop and
what it has meant to her through the years. She commended
John for his many good deeds and his dedication to the Shriners’ cause and then she told him she had something special
for him. Moore’s son Cameron then unveiled a framed certificate from the Governor’s office. As Representative Warren read the words written on the certificate those attending
the gathering saw something happen that rarely happens…
John Moore was speechless.

The fall of 2012 was a busy time at Pitt Co. S/C. It
started with our annual Fish Fry, benefitting the Shriners
Hospitals for Children on Friday, Sept 7th. Many thanks to
those dedicated members who help support this event. Next
up in September was the SASA convention at Myrtle Beach
where our very own Desert Rats won first place in their division in the parade. After an absence of over five years, the
Board of Directors voted to restart the monthly Fish Fry the
first Friday of each month during the fall & winter. The
first fish fry was held on Friday, November 2nd and was considered a success. We had an excellent group of volunteers
who worked very well together and we sold out of fish stew! We’ll continue this event the first Friday night of each month
through February. That same weekend, the Downeast Holliday Show was held at the Greenville Convention Center in
Greenville. For the first time ever, Pitt Count y Shrine Club
had a presence at this event. A very enthusiastic group of 14
Pitt Count y Shrinettes volunteered to work the booth. Our
supply of “Be Burn Aware” coloring books as well as other
information concerning the Shriners Hospitals for Children
was exhausted and many folks were interested in our Banquet
Facilities. This three day event drew 11,500 attendees and
Pitt Count y Shrine Club and Shriners in general were very
positively represented. The Fall Ceremonial in Dunn was
well attended by a group of Desert Rats who helped feed Friday night’s crowd. The month of December and 2012 ended
with several rental events at the Shrine Club, our children’s
Christmas Part y on December 9th, our Ladies Night & Installation of Officers on the 20th and the Rats representing Sudan
Shriners & Pitt Count y in many local Christmas parades
during the month. We welcome our newest Nobles and their
families who crossed the sands in 2012, Bryan Farquhar &
Jonathan Thomas to our Shrine family. Pitt Count y Shrine
Club would like to thank our many supporters, rental clients
& Shrine Club members who have supported us throughout
2012 and we look forward to a prosperous new year. 7

Noble Sets Record for

Shrine Club recently presented Sudan with a total of
$22,000.00 for Plaque Sales to help Shriners Hospitals
for Children.
Noble Johnnie, who has only been a Shriner for
3 years, was asked in March if he would consider filling a vacancy as 1st VP for his club. After a few days
of questioning whether his age and health might be a
hindrance in this job, which also contained Fish Fry
Chairperson, he decided with help, he could do it.
As Johnnie started on Plaque Sales, he wanted to
set a goal to reach and started with $5000.00, which
fell easily. He then saw where a local shrine club had
sent out a challenge to any club that could beat them;
they would contribute a $1000.00 donation to the hospital in that club’s name.
Another goal was set and this was $10,000.00 which
as before fell easily. As he was selling Plaques he kept
one thing in mind, “It’s for the Children”. $10,000.00
turned into $15,000.00 and then $20,000.00, which
he questioned, but then realized it could happen. In
late October, sales slowed but he kept going until the
final day when, with a smile as big as Texas, he reached
$22,000.00. With this total and the Fish Fry total, he
turned into Sudan for the hospitals a grand total of
$31,765.91, which is a record for his club.
An even bigger surprise was in store for his club
when he unveiled a chart with slots that reach all the
way to $25,000.00, a goal he feels he can reach in 2013
since he already has a $1000.00 jump thanks to a local
club who also believes in “working for the children”.

Grifton Shrine Club President, Noble Chris
Johnson with the addition of new Nobles, energized
the club into conducting their first fish fry in
approximately 25 years. Noble Bruce Cannon, Club
Public Relations said the event went off very well.
Noble Carl Smith, Marshal for Sudan Shriners
assisted with the event. It was conducted on
November 9th. Noble Cannon and Noble Ken Rouse
said it was a lot of hard work but the fellowship and
fun was enjoyed by all. Approximately 500 plates
were sold with an estimated profit of $900.00. The
Grifton Shrine Club maintains a concession stand
at the annual Grifton Shad Festival, conducted in
April each year and has had limited success. I would
say the Fish Fry might be here to stay! Good luck
in the future.

recently conducted their annual Toy Run from Shelton Davis’ Harley Davidson Dealership in Smithfield to the Goldsboro Dealership. The group is
escorted for the event by the Johnston Count y Sheriff’s Office, the Wayne Count y Sheriff’s Office and
the Goldsboro Police Department. The number of
biker participants has varied over the six year period with 200 to over 500 biker participating in this
great event. The proceeds of toys and monetary
donations exceed the $25,000.00 figure. The Shriners Hospitals for Children has been the primary
recipient over the six year period; however, other
charitable organizations have seen proceeds from
the event. The many patients express their sincere
appreciation and gratitude to this fabulous group
for the support the H.O.G. and Noble Shelton Davis give to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Thanks to the generous assistance of St Johns
Karts & Kawasaki near Ahoskie, NC, the Sudan
Desert Rats from Pitt Count y have acquired a 2012
KawasTeryx4. It’s wrapped in the Desert Rat camopattern and will seat four. It fit nicely with the military theme of the Desert Rats. It was acquired as
a result of some very hard work by our dedicated
membership as well as the guidance, encouragement
and support from our brother Shriners from the
Rocky Mount Shrine Club who helped us with the
fundraiser. Again we thank St Johns Karts & Kawasaki for their support of the Sudan Desert Rats.

inspiration to me and a role model to you.”
Noble Jerry Tillett, the Oriental Guide for Sudan
Shriners described the mission of the Shriners and their
services to children and their families through the network of Shriners Hospitals. Tillett was joined by other
Shriners and the Chairman of the Shrine Bowl of the
Carolinas, Noble Ronnie Blount for this special crowning of Marley.
Marley is the daughter of Mark and
Nicole Wiseman of Kill Devil Hills. She was selected
for the honor of 2012 Queen from among 600 other
children who have received support and care from the
Shriners hospitals for Children. Although Marley is
indeed a Queen, she is a t ypical teen. Math is her favorite subject in school. She says, “Because it is fun and
challenging.” She loves to sing and has been involved
with her school chorus and active in school plays since
the fourth grade.
“Even though I cannot take part in some things,”
notes Marley, “I would always go out and support my
twin sister, Sydney when she played soccer and this past
year she played lacrosse. My Dad and step-Mom have
never treated me differently and always encouraged me
to do my best. I am a Shriners’ kid. I have been getting help from the Shriners since I was 11 months old
and still receive help from them to this day. This is my
chance to give back to the group that has helped me for
so many years.”
The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is played each
year with High School all stars from North and South
Carolina. The entire event will benefit the Greenville
Shriner’s Hospitals for Children and 21 other Shriners’
Hospitals across the nation, Canada and Mexico. This
event has raised more hen $69 million dollars over the
years.

KILL DEVIL HILLS: First Flight Middle School
eighth grade student Marley Wiseman, a self described
Shriner’s Kid, is this year’s 2012 Shrine Bowl of the
Carolinas’ Queen. On the afternoon of November 8th,
Marley got the royal treatment – down to the crown and
robe – in front of the entire student body at an afternoon assembly. FFMS Principal, Dr John Donlan has
known Marley since she was in kindergarten at Nags
Head Elementary. Donlan remarked, “The Shriners
could not have selected a better representative for this
honor. Although not the easiest spot to be in – literally the center of attention – Marley took it all in stride. It
was good practice, since she’ll be appearing at upcoming
football games – with the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte and at the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, All Star
Football game in South Carolina on December 15th.

2012 Sudan $10,000 Giveaway
Winner
Sudan Gators
The Sudan Gators received their charter in the fall
of 2006, beginning with four carts and five members.
PP Olen Smith was the Sudan Potentate. The Gators
currently have thirteen members, seven gas powered
golf-carts with “Gator Heads”, a go-cart with a “Gator
Head” that is known as the Baby Gator and one golf-cart
known as “Gator Aid”, which is used as our retrieval
vehicle, for a total of nine motorized units. The Gator
heads pivot up and down and each cart has a specialt y;
they blow smoke, spray water, blow bubbles and one
plays beach and up-tempo music to the delight of the
crows.
All carts are Husqvarna HUV 4210 gas powered
golf-carts and are individually owned. The carts are purchased locally. The Gator Heads are purchased from a
company in Arizona and modified to fit the cart by the
members.
In addition to the motorized carts, there are two animated “Walking Gators” known as Ali and Wally. The
kids love Ali and Wally, who interact with the crowd
by joking, high 5’s teasing. They sometimes ride on
their special tow behind trailers known as Ali’s Ride
and Wally’s Wagon.
The Gators appear in over fifteen parades annually
and were selected to participate in the Governor Inaugural Parade in Raleigh in January 2009. The Gators won
1st place in the Mini motors 4-wheel standard division at
SASA in 2009.
Each August, the annual Gator Splash dance is held
at the Pamlico Count y Shrine Club as a fundraiser to
help benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Sudan Gators are based at the Pamlico Count y
Shrine Club and meet at 7:00pm on the second Monday
of each month. Members are currently from Pamlico,
Craven, Jones and Pitt counties. We are recruiting new
members at this time and you do not have to own a cart
to become a member.
Noble Dennis Roberson’s lucky ticket was drawn
during the 2012 Fall Ceremonial at Dunn as the winner of the $10,000 Giveaway. Sudan’s 1st Ceremonial
Master Stacey Pugh is making the check presentation.
Noble Roberson is from Bethel and became a Mason in
1972 in Bethel Lodge and is a Past Master. He crossed
the Sudan Hot Sands in 1976.

During the week of November 26, 2012, Terrance
Morrow, US Marine Retired (Major) donated a collection of over 350 Die Cast Toys (Cars, Trucks, Tractors,
etc.) still in the original boxes to Sudan Shriners. He
stated, “I have heard about the special things the Shriners do for the Children and I wanted to get involved
and help out”. Major Morrow lives in the New Bern
communit y and wanted to do something special for the
Shriners Hospitals for Children. His collection started
about ten years ago and has since filled his garage to
capacit y. He estimates that he has approximately 1000
toys altogether. He indicated a strong interest in our
fraternit y and Noble Ken Bennett took care of the initial step.
Wayne Shrine Club at $15,918. As promised in February 2012, the Wayne Shrine Club will present a check
for $1000.00 to the Sudan Transportation Fund at the
2013 Winter Ceremonial. End result of a lot of hard
work for all of Sudan was a Grand Total of $49,488.00
for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Not only did
Wilson Count y win the Club award, Noble Albritton
was the overall Individual Top Seller. Noble Allan
Johnson, Sudan Plaque Chairman visited several clubs
and units. Plans are currently in progress for the 2013
drive and hopefully we can get some other clubs to take
up this drive. I am sure that Noble Albritton would, for
the sake of the children, like to share his secrets at our
next Seminar in February 2013. Since 1993, the Sudan
Plaque Sales Program has now raised $585,030.00. The
Wayne Shrine Club has the longest streak of winning
the award with ten consecutive years.

Congratulations to Noble Johnnie Albritton from
the Wilson Count y Shrine Club for his outstanding accomplishment with the Sudan Plaque sales. We have
stated time and time again this year that the challenge
put forth by the Wayne Shrine Club should produce
activit y. Throughout the year the Wilson and Wayne
Shrine Club went neck and neck until the last day of the
fundraiser, November 30th. The totals were announced
by Donna Horton, Children’s Activit y Coordinator,
who oversees and monitors the yearly event. Wilson
Count y ended the year with a total of $22,000 with the

time to draw that one ticket for the EZ Go Custom Golf

Count y Shrine Club Fish Fry in May 2012. Mary Jane
having her choice of colors, elected to make it Red. She

Patient Creates Local Support
through “Curvy Girls”
Shriners Hospitals for Children® provides
treatment for all types and levels of scoliosis, a
musculoskeletal disorder that causes an abnormal
curve of the spine. Our pediatric orthopaedic
surgeons are especially skilled and able to provide
care to children needing complex surgeries to
correct their scoliosis. One patient receiving expert
care from Shriners Hospitals for Children for this
condition is Camille Tharpe from Shreveport, La.
first Curvy Girls chapter in Louisiana. Through
fliers, media appearances and promotion to local
physicians’ offices, Camille generated enough
interest to host her first local Curvy Girls meeting.
Attended by local scoliosis patients and several
parents, the inaugural meeting had an important
impact on Camille.
“The major thing I took away from our first
meeting is that I’m helping these girls, but they’re
helping me so much and they’re encouraging me to
be braver and more open,” said Camille.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is pleased to be
able to help children with scoliosis, and proud to see
our patients giving back to others.
When Camille was first diagnosed with scoliosis at
age 10, the realities of how treatment might affect
her seemed to be a distant issue. On the verge of
entering the challenging social constructs of preteen
life, she approached her condition with a cautious,
yet optimistic, outlook.
Upon her first visit to Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Shreveport, Camille’s medical team
began monitoring the development of her spine.
While initial visits yielded positive results, later
examinations indicated movement and changes
consistent with additional curvature in her spine.
Camille was informed she would require a back
brace running from her hips to her shoulders to
prevent further curvature.
“My reaction was kind of what other preteen
or teenagers’ reactions would be – absolutely
terrified,” she said. According to Anthony Sin, M.D.,
a neurosurgeon providing spine care at Shriners
Hospitals for Children — Shreveport, concerns about
physical appearance are common among those
undergoing care for scoliosis.
Looking for Support
Immediately after learning she would require a
brace, Camille and her mother, Christine, searched
for support outlets online. Their search led them
to Curvy Girls, a national scoliosis support group
founded by Long Island teenager and scoliosis
patient Leah Stoltz. By that evening, Camille had
spoken with Stoltz on the phone, and her focus had
already begun to change toward the positive.
“That was a total turnaround moment and she
was ready to embrace wearing her brace after that
phone call,” Christine said. “Girls need to have
someone they can talk to about wearing a back
brace 23 hours a day, the clothes you wear with a
brace and how to just get through the day.”
With the support of the national organization,
Camille set out this past summer to form the
Camille Tharpe, a patient at Shriners Hospitals for
Children — Shreveport, founded the first Curvy
Girls support group in Louisiana.

Photo Contest
Shriners International is hosting its first ever photo contest! Shriners are
dedicated to their mission of fun, fellowship and philanthropy. We invite all
Nobles to share your images that best represent what it means to be a Shriner.
Two winning photos will be chosen from each of the following categories:
• Fellowship/Brotherhood
• Fun
• Family
• Community
• Legacy
• Costumes
What are the qualities of a winning image?
Technical quality, clarity and composition are all important, but what will set a
photo apart from the rest is the ability to capture that “picture perfect”
moment that expresses the true spirit of the Shriners.
How will winners be recognized?
Winners will receive a plaque, pin and an Amazon.com gift card. Winning
photos will be published in a new publication that will debut at the
2013 Imperial Session in Indianapolis, Indiana. They will also
be shown on the screen with the name of the photographer
during the Public Relations report at Imperial Session. Two

Rocky Mount Special
Time Capsule
Noble Presented State’s
Highest Award
Rocky Mount Shriners will be conducting a special
“Time Capsule” ceremony at their club. In 1972, the
Rocky Mount Shrine Club was built on Airport Road
in Rocky Mount. A lot of history has been made in the
past fort y years at this Shrine Club. In 1999, the entire propert y was under 42 inches of water. There are
markings on the walls in the club to this date to indicate
the water line. Over the years the Rocky Mount Club
has recovered and now has a beautiful facilit y. Club
President Jerry Tharrington, keeping in tune with Illustrious Sir Steve Norris’ theme “Honoring Our Past,
Looking to Our Future” initiated this project. Noble
Tharrington has collected documents, club newspapers,
took photos from the present and the past. Noble Ward
Sutton donated a special container for the time capsule.
The capsule was then modified by Noble Robert Hitt.
The capsule will be buried at the end of this year in the
front lawn at the club. The footstone will have instructions for the capsule to be opened in 40 years from now,
2052, and the contents examined. Thank you Noble

Noble Tony Ferrell of the Wilson Count y Shrine
Club was presented the State’s highest honor, “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine” at the club’s Ladies Night
and Installation of Officers recently. Past Potentate,
Illustrious Sir Aubrey Nichols was given permission by
the office of Governor Beverly Purdue to present this
prestigious award. Past Potentate Nichols started the
process in early 2012 before finally receiving permission
in November to finalize the award.
In his presentation, Past Potentate Nichols informed the group of the tremendous amount of time
Tony had dedicated to the shrine children he helps
transport as part of the Roadrunners. He commented
on Noble Tony’s past as a military veteran, being severely wounded on May 20, 1967 while serving in Viet
Nam. After many months of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Tony was able to return to work and embarked
on a career with the Wilson Police Department where he
retired with 30 years of service.
Another project of Tony’s is being Chairperson
of the T. Bruce Boyette Scholarship Golf Tournament
for Wilson Lodge #712. In completing its 10th year
of existence, this tournament has been able to support
scholarships to local high school students to help continue their education to a college of their choice. There
have been over 40 scholarships to date for a total sum
of $40,000.00.
The many hats that Tony has worn and still continues to help out as a Roadrunner, Sudan’s Children’s
Activit y Chairperson, and Golf Tournament Chairman
have well qualified this Mason and Shriner as a recipient of “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine”. Congratulations Noble Tony Ferrell for a well deserved honor.

THE “RED FEZ” MAGAZINE
The Sudan Shriners “Red Fez” magazine is a quarterly publication intended to
keep the Nobility, their families and interested friends informed of upcoming events,
announcements, and news from Sudan Shriners, clubs, and units.
With a renewed commitment to keep all members informed, the Potentate, Sudan
Divan, and Sudan office personnel strive to provide timely information distributed through
Website updates at www.sudanshriners.com in addition to this publication.
We welcome article and photo submissions from all Sudan members, clubs, and units
with assurance that with space permitting and publishable photographs attached, you can expect to see your material published
on either the Website or in the “Red Fez”. Submissions will be subject to rewrites or modification to insure journalistic
accuracy, timeliness, and proper style.
With a rich rewarding history to relish and help compose, Sudan Shriners will continue to provide you, the individual
member, club or unit, outlets to share with others, your experiences in your Shrine journey.
The results of your labors are evident in the number of children who have so much more than they might have had
otherwise, through your support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Be proud that you wear the Red Fez of a Sudan
