April - Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club
The Issue 3/10 - Volume 115 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club Masthead Commodore SandyDelaney Mills Craig samills@cox.net cedelaney1@gmail.com Give Ourselves a Big Cheer! Have you ever noticed and marveled at how seamlessly BCYC moves through the years? We go from board to board, commodore to commodore, and committee head to committee head each year. Yet, everything continues to function in a smooth, harmonious manner. Our events are not exactly the same each year, but we manage to make gradual changes over time that keep a certain familiarity, and at the same time, a bit of freshness to all aspects of BCYC. We have a long list of members who work very hard each year to keep our many activities, both on the water and ashore, fresh April 2016 and interesting. One of the reasons that we are so successful is that our newer members are welcomed with open arms to join the committees and to contribute their ideas, energy and time to all aspects of BCYC. This acceptance into the fabric of our club is certainly one of our major strengths. I have experienced many yacht clubs during my boating life. Seldom do you see a club with fewer cliques and more respect and joy in welcoming newer members. Drop into the Columbia Room on a busy evening. Groups of people make room for later arrivals, ask newer members to join in, and push the tables and chairs around to accommodate the newcomers. This warm and welcoming attitude is what really separates BCYC from other groups. We do deserve a big CHEER. On another subject, an email address has been created that goes directly to the commodore. The address is commentstothecommodore@bcyc.org. I will be monitoring the emails you send and will respond to anything that you communicate. April 16 is the time to invite potential new members to come to BCYC to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Lounge Night, where new and old members alike will listen to the captivating sounds of Aged to Perfection, who will play some nostalgic tunes from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Chef Georges Rapicault will tempt our taste buds with several different tapas and our friendly staff will ensure your comfort. BCYC’s Lounge Nights are always a big hit, and we want you to bring potential members to enjoy the experience, too. Invite them! A new members’ information table will be set up at the event for your convenience. This will be a place for potential members to get more information about BCYC. We want everyone to have a rocking good time! This is your club and it will be fabulous to have your friends be a part of it. Look for the many members who will be wearing blue name tags indicating they have joined in the last year. Please welcome them! BCYC will continue the tradition of being the friendliest club in Newport Harbor. Activities Kristy Parr/Kari Konapelsky Bkparr@earthlink.net karikona57@gmail.com Spring is in The Air You would think after the flurry of activities that occurred this winter we would sit back and take a rest – but no, there’s still too much fun to be had! The club was beautifully decorated for Easter thanks to our design team and all of the efforts of the staff who helped bring springtime to the club. April 16 brings music to BCYC with a special Lounge Night featuring our very own Aged to Perfection – on demand. This time YOU chose the top 25 songs that will be played from a list of 100 possible tunes. Chef Georges Rapicault will once again be creating some delicious small plates to nibble on throughout the evening. The many activities in May include Closing Night, Opening Day, Mother’s Day and the first Wine Dinner of the year. Then, be ready to launch into summer! The activities are as much fun to create, plan and put on as they are to attend, PLUS it’s a fantastic way to meet wonderful people and get involved. We would love to have you come join us. Activities Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Please contact us if you have any questions. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The Masthead April 2016 Cruising Lauri and Secy Steve Moffett laurimoffett@gmail.com Avalon in April Our first desert land cruise to the Indian Wells-Palm Desert area was a fabulous success! The 18-hole putting game on Friday started the competitive juices flowing. At the conclusion, our thirsty putters headed to the beautiful home of Vice Commodore Chuck Wert and enjoyed a great spread of food and libations. The weather was near perfect for Saturday golf at Indian Wells Country Club, and the golf cart girls made sure all the golfers were properly nourished and hydrated. Castelli’s restaurant put on a delicious Italian dinner. Our land cruisers are excitedly looking forward to the Cambria trip in September. Results from the desert golf games were: • Golf team winners: 1st place – Park Haws, David Hoppe, Tony Knox, Neilia LaValle; 2nd place – Vance DiMaria, Mike Gervais, Billy Jack; 3rd place – Russell Grant, Steve Moffett, Paul Secard • Putting game winners: 1st place – Park Haws; 2nd place – Eddie Arnold; 3rd place – Scott McKinley A big thank you to: Chuck Wert and Lynn Lyon for sharing their home and golf course with us; Kelley and Heidi York for sharing their putting course and organizing the putting games; Tony Knox for helping with research and coordination of the cruise; Teri Leigh for making our desert goodie bags; Maxine Czisny, Lauri Moffett and Lynn Lyon for being golf cart girls. We head off on the Avalon cruise April 8-10. Our plans include: a dinghy raft-up cocktail party on Friday; Saturday photo scavenger hunt in golf carts; and Saturday night Mexican dinner. We’ll also have an angling competition during this cruise! Please read the angling article by Rhonda Tolar in the March issue of The Masthead for more information. In the event that our weather is not safe or too rainy, we will change this cruise to a “staycation” at the club. We hope you will join us. Looking ahead to May, we are going back to Long Beach Yacht Club for an exchange cruise over Memorial Day weekend! Please watch for more information to follow in the near future. This is open to all members, even if you don’t have a boat. It’s a 30-minute drive from BCYC and we would love to see some new faces! Sign-ups begin April 30. Our monthly meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Please join our fun group and help us plan the upcoming cruises. We look forward to seeing you all there. Dear Carol – Digital Dilemmas Defused Dear Carol: I feel like I should get involved with social media, but I don’t know where to start. What would you recommend? Thanks. Newbie in Newport Dear Newbie: My advice is to pick one social media site to start, and get the hang of it before branching out. Here are three of the most popular, and what they’re best for: •Twitter: Mostly social, Twitter is a great place to share your thoughts in brief (140 characters or less). Typically, you are sharing publicly with an audience made up of people you do and do not know in real life. You follow others — including public figures from every sector— to keep up with their thoughts and news. •Facebook: Mostly social, Facebook is a great place to keep up with friends and family and to follow news coming from favorite businesses, public figures and organizations. Share updates publicly or privately with up to 5,000 “friends.” If you haven’t already, make sure to “like” Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club on Facebook to keep up with club news and events! •LinkedIn: Mostly professional, LinkedIn takes business networking online. Use this site to connect with professional contacts, to seek or offer employment, and to keep up with news related to your work and industry. I hope this helps! Carol NOTE from Editor: This Dear Carol column will be a regular feature in The Masthead. Written by Carol Bloom, digital marketing specialist and active BCYC member, she will be pleased to answer your social media questions. Send email to Carol@Bloomarketing. com with the subject line: Dear Carol - BCYC. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club 3 April 2016 The Masthead Vice Commodore Commodore Vice Sandy Wert Mills Chuck samills@cox.net chuckw61@sbcglobal.net Port of Heaven I would like to begin my article this month with a quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes: “To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it – but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.” Our Cruise Committee, headed by Lauri Moffett and assisted by her very capable husband, Steve, seems to have heard this phrase and embraced it. Looking at the schedule of cruises, including our March sold-out land cruise to the desert, we are certainly not lying at anchor. This month, our flotilla will head to Avalon for another weekend of festivities. As a recent convert to cruising, I thought my days would be filled with lying at anchor sipping cocktails. Not so, because of the many fun activities the Moffetts and their able committee have planned. There is an ambitious schedule of cruises for the remainder of the year with something for all, so please plan to join them. I continue to be amazed at the creativity and ambitious efforts that go into each and every one of these events. While this might not be cruising heaven, it is as close as we can get. Some years ago, a generous member donated a Duffy to BCYC, which was made available to the membership. This has been a rousing success and a mainstay for club members to utilize. Recently, our club was blessed with another bequest – this time, a Harbor 20 sailboat, Ruthless. For those of you unfamiliar with Harbor 20s, they are probably the most popular boat in Newport Harbor. On any given weekend, there may be 20-30 of them racing or just leisurely sailing throughout the harbor. On behalf of our entire membership, we owe gratitude and thanks to the Barden family for this generous donation of Ruthless and their continued commitment to the success of BCYC. All interested members will need to be certified. This can be done by contacting Junior Sailing Director Cameron MacLaren or General Manager Scott Jones to schedule your certification. Be Safe and Win! Now is the time to start reviewing the vessel safety checklist in anticipation of BCYC’s Opening Day event May 7 — the annual Boat Maintenance Competition and Inspection. It’s easy to do and you will have the satisfaction of a Bristol and safe boat with a trophy or decal to prove it! The competition is based on the Bristol condition of the boats entered and is conducted by the Balboa Power Squadron. There are two classes for point evaluation. Class 1 involves items required by Coast Guard regulations, while Class 2 items are necessary for the prudent operation of the vessel. Points are awarded based on the following criteria: Absent, not functioning or not easily accessible – 0 Functioning, but in poor condition – 1 Functioning, but in fair condition – 2 Functioning, and appears to be new – 3 The inspectors look for things like personal flotation devices, navigation light operation, displaying the required CF number on your dinghy and overall condition of the vessel. Sound easy? It is! Available categories are: up to and including 34-feet; 35- to 45-feet; 46-feet and over; and electric boats There are separate trophies in each of the first three categories for both power and sail boats. Regardless of your boat’s size or type, you can be a winner! Please contact me if you have any questions. If you don’t want to compete, plan to sign up for the Coast Guard inspection and earn your boat a safety decal. It is a courtesy inspection and their findings are given only to the skipper of the boat. Visit vesselsafetycheck.org for more details. The website not only has an item-by-item description of the safety check, you can also use Online Vessel Safety Check, an interactive program that lets you determine if your boat would pass a safety check. This same information is available in the front office. The competition and inspection begin at 9 a.m. on Opening Day. Find the sign-up sheet form by visiting bcyc.org. Bring your boat to BCYC for the competition and Opening Day dock parties. The club office will begin accepting dock reservations April 9, after noon. Good luck! - Susie Brodrick, Marina Manager - OPENING DAY 2016 MAY 7 - CEREMONY STARTS AT 2 P.M. Roaring 20s was the theme for our Showboat luncheon. Several ladies dressed in outfits honoring the occasion. We all had a great time learning 20s dance routines, led by Dee Shandera and Rhonda Tolar, and they also supplied the feather boas and beads. Hats off to Dee, Rhonda and Natalie Tolar for entertaining us with their “Thoroughly Modern Millie” song-and-dance routine. The centerpieces created by Kari Konapelsky were exquisite! Please make plans to attend our upcoming events: Dog Show, April 16; Poker Run, May 6; Progressive Luncheon, May 19. Scholars and Sailing At our February Junior Board of Directors meeting, we had the opportunity to learn more about the college admissions process from past Junior Commodore Connor Chung. Connor was recently accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and shared his college admissions experience with us. He gave us an excellent overview and reviewed several valuable tips about how to stand out. Connor wanted to make sure we all understood the most important thing we could do was to be ourselves. Above all, colleges want to see the real you. They want to know what you are all about and how you will contribute to the student population. It is an excellent idea to thoroughly research each college you are interested in and understand its core values. Keeping track of all deadlines is also a must. We want to thank Connor for joining us, and we wish him all the best! He is a very dedicated student who took his talents to the next level. Attending one of the most prestigious universities in the country, he is a great example of what the Junior Board of Directors is all about – we are scholars AND sailors! On that note, Connor is going to sail for the MIT Sailing Team. DID YOU KNOW Roaring 20s Luncheon ? Important Stuff Did you know that water usage, while significantly reduced in the clubhouse, has not improved in the marina? The city of Newport Beach will begin fining BCYC if usage is not reduced – please talk to your boat maintenance crews about water usage and consider skipping some of your scheduled boat washing dates! Did you know that BCYC will be hosting more than 25 boats and their crews prior to the 2016 Newport to Ensenada (N2E) race? Did you know that BCYC will host a great barbecue on Thursday, April 21, for the N2E skippers and crew staying in the marina? ALL members are welcome to join this fun event. Las Commodoras March Fashion Show Luncheon 6 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The Masthead Junior Sailing Director Cameron MacLaren April 2016 Rear Rear Commodore Commodore Sandy Mills Jerry Shandera cameronm@bcyc.org samills@cox.net bulkmaterialsystems7@gmail.com Clubster Coming Soon A “Ruthless” New Resource You may have heard the fantastic news that BCYC has recently acquired a club-owned Harbor 20 keelboat named Ruthless. This generous donation is a versatile asset that provides members with a multitude of different uses, from casual day sailing to competitive racing in the most prevalent one-design fleet in Newport Harbor. Suitable for all ages and capable of carrying up to six adults comfortably (the seat cushions are a mandatory class rule), this boat can offer a luxurious evening sail for two or an on-the-water picnic with the whole family. This acquisition is particularly invigorating for the Junior Sailing Program because of the opportunities it presents. Our Starfish class of 5- to 7-year olds will be able to go sailing in larger groups with an instructor on a very stable platform – a controlled environment that helps alleviate the concerns of a first-time sailor. When paired with another Harbor 20, more experienced junior sailors can use these boats to train for match racing, furthering our long-term goal of sending a team to the Governor’s Cup hosted by Balboa Yacht Club. The boat will also be available to charter for the regular weekend regattas held by local yacht clubs, and once the weekly summer race series start up in May, there will be racing nearly every night of the week with A, B and C classes grouped by skill level. The club Harbor 20 will be available for private lessons for kids, as well as adults. Members of intermediate sailing skill or higher will also enjoy the privilege of renting the boat on an hourly basis after being certified. Contact me for more information, to get certified or to schedule a lesson. We are looking forward to putting this exciting gift to full use, so if you are interested in going sailing or learning to sail, come check it out! Sailing - It Has Affected My Life Between Corona del Mar High School’s varsity sailing team, BCYC’s summer sailing program and regattas, I am spending a big chunk of my life on the water. I would not have it any other way. In fact, if it were not for things like school, family and other life commitments, I would spend triple the amount of time on the water than I do already. Unfortunately, spending every waking hour honing your sailing skills is not a reasonable scheduling goal. My sailing career started the summer before second grade and, while I would be lying if I told you I loved it since I first pushed off the dock, with my father’s encouragement, I stuck with it until I really began to love it. Sailing is a sport Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club will soon have its own private mobile communication app provided by Clubster. This app is free and private – all of your communication will stay private. You will be able to keep up with upcoming activities through email and text communication from the club, view event information and RSVP to events. With Clubster you can send private messages, create your own groups and share links with other members. You will receive an invitation to join in the near future. Sign up using the Clubster iPhone app on your iPhone or iPad (look for iPhone app for both devices) or Apple computer. Android users should download the Android app. Windows computer users should go to clubster.com to sign up. We are very excited about the ability to quickly and easily communicate with all members whether you prefer email, text messages or both. Make plans to bring your pooch, small and big, and participate in the Las Commodoras Dog Show April 16. That evening, you can enjoy the music provided by Aged to Perfection while sampling the several small plate food offerings prepared by Chef Georges Rapicault and the culinary team. April 21 brings the annual Newport to Ensenada pre-race barbecue to the club. In May, be ready to enjoy: • Closing Day and Poker Run, May 6 • Opening Day, May 7 • Mother’s Day, May 8 • Las Commodoras Progressive Lunch, May 19 • First 2016 Wine Dinner, May 21 The lower patio and barbecue area are ready for you – this renovated space is the perfect spot to host a birthday celebration, company dinner or just hang out and enjoy a burger and brew. as intellectual as it is physical, and your brain contributes as much to your success as physical dexterity. The unique and varied community around sailing is my home. Being able to learn from people, both older and younger, really sets sailing apart from other sports. Sailing has given me my closest friends and taught me how to work with people on a small and large scale. With both the personal skipper-crew relationship and the team and yacht club at large, as well as everyone with whom I interact at events and on the water, I have become a more confident and capable friend and person. Sailing has brought me closer to some of the most influential people in my life and is undeniably my favorite way to spend my time. Congratulations to Abbott Ayloush. While with his nephew, Abbott caught the first BCYC sailfish near the Furuno Bank off the coast of Costa Rica! He caught the 130-pound fish using 30-pound test line, a 100-pound leader and number 8 circle hook. Thanks, Abbott, for our first “Kiss Your Catch” photo! California Rockfish season opened again March 1 after a 60-day closure. I have angler friends who love to go out for rockfish, and I am excited to have been invited to join them – really looking forward to this new challenge. The 53rd Annual Lily Call Bay Tournament, hosted by Balboa Angling Club, runs May 21-22. I’m hoping to have a team of anglers representing BCYC in this challenge. We have two boats available for you – please send an email as soon as possible to rhtolar@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the team for this event. On Feb. 21, I went to the Pacific Coast Sport Fishing Festival at the Orange County Fairgrounds. It was a great show with several seminars, including the near shore yellowtail seminar, where I learned from the speakers that yellowtail are still being caught off Point Fermin. Spring is here and soon another great summer of boating and fishing. Please send in your pics of you and your catch so we can share your fishing story in The Masthead and don’t forget your “Kiss Your Catch” photo. Did you know that April 11 is national 8-track tape day? Did you know 8-track tapes were invented by jet maker William Lear? No, this is not a late April Fools Day joke, but rather a way to point out the huge advances in technology. Remember the sextant? Remember RDF (Radio Direction Finder)? Remember LORAN (Long Range Navigation)? All were precursors to GPS, which will most likely be replaced with some sort of virtual navigation system in the future – maybe even in 2016. Until then, be sure to enter the coordinates for the Newport Harbor bell buoy into your current GPS. Remember what you learned at the Safety at Sea Seminar. Think fog! A new racing mark will soon be added in Newport Harbor. It will be located near the Pavilion and conveniently named “P” mark. This is just in time for Taco Tuesdays, which start up again on May 17. New Inside mark charts will be available by the bulletin board as soon as the mark is officially in the water. Attention new members – if you haven’t heard all of the stories about Taco Tuesdays, ask around. This is where great food, great racing and great fun intersect. The bar opens at 4 p.m., and the Mexican buffet is amazing. Don’t have a sailboat? No problem – crew on another member’s boat. The Doug Mills Series (for PHRF) and the Lorin Weiss Series (for Harbor 20s) are underway. Even if you don’t race, be sure to stop by the Columbia Room around 4 p.m. on race day to join the racers in their usual post-race celebration. Cheering the trophy winners is requested! A Note from our Chaplain . . . “Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors.
