HERE’S TO
ANOTHER GREAT YEAR

Since this is the last newsletter of 2013 I thought I might
reflect on the past 12 months. As always, there was a full tournament schedule for the Western Sector including 27 Open, 11
Raffa, and 5 Volo tournaments. Besides all the tournaments at
the non member clubs it made for a full year.
In June we had the honor of having the USBF National
Championship in our Sector at the Italian Athletic Club in Stockton Ca. There was a money Open tournament, a medal Open
tournament and singles Raffa. For those of you that didn't attend
you missed some great competition in all categories. There were
players from the East and from down south and alot of the great
players from the Central Valley and Bay area. David Canclini and
Ron Jacobs, with the help of the Womens Auxiliary of IAC and
many volunteers from the IAC made it a fun time for all.
Arguably the best player in the country, Jose Botto, was
here so I think we all felt like we were playing for second. Gerald
Gilligan was the only one to give Jose a scare. One different
bounce over the pallino and things might have been different but
Gerald played a great game. Jose went on to win the Mens Singles. Navina Bernardi won the Womens Singles and Drew Page
won the 21 and under. Congratulations to Jose, Navina and
Drew. All three will go on to represent the USA at the World
Championship. It seems we will be well represented.
In July eight teams from our little area headed north to
Gresham Oregon for the California vs The Northwest Challenge.
As usual Ca. won but not by the margin as in the past. The play-
ers up north are catching up to the Ca. players but they still have
problems with our Ca women. After Ca. vs The Northwest there
is a Rossi Tournament in honor of Nick Rossi’s father. The Tournament director, Larry Cereghino, was a little miffed this year as
he had to put a non Italian name on the trophy; The Sopranos.
He'll get over it.
The next big event was The Santa Rosalia Tournament in
Monterey. This is always a fun event and everyone participating
looks forward to playing and eating at the fine restaurants on the
wharf. Congratulations to Ginny Nelson and her team. they just
kept on winning and walked away with first place.
In November its on to the Peppermill. This year there were
65 teams entered to play. This is also an event that is on everyone’s calendar for the year. Besides a lot of intense bocce there
is a lot of eating going on. Seems to be a trend. Anthony Sino
and his crew do a fantastic job each year and did the same this
year. Congratulations to Paul Aliotti, Jimmy Collins, Sean Sopwart and Vince Costa of Aliotti’s Victorian Corner Restaurant.
After losing their first game, they went on to win 11 games. They
walked, or should I say dragged themselves away with first
place.
For 2014 we have a full schedule on the Western Sector
Tournament list so the competition continues. With the other
events going on there will be a lot of bocce again next year.
I personally would like to thank Frank Rivera for all the
work he does in putting this newsletter together, because without
him it wouldn't happen. He spends endless hours working on it
besides traveling to tournaments to take pictures. So all of you
out there who want to write about something or send in some
bocce related pictures don't hesitate to share with everyone in
the Western Sector. I hear positive feedback all the time regarding the newsletter and that can be attributed to the hard work
Frank puts in.

As part of our effort to maintain a history of National Championship
Tournament medalists, in 2011 we began to compile archive lists of
medal winners. We have two lists; a listing of winners by year and a list
of winners in alphabetical order. They are complete from 1999 through
2013. Although our efforts have not gone unrewarded, we have reached
a point where we must depend on you to help us complete these lists.
Please click on the icons below to look at each list. Not only will
you see the names of friends and acquaintances who have reached the
pinnacle of bocce in the United States, but looking at these lists may
help you remember the names of people you know who won in the years
1979 through 1998.

The Cupcake Lady Comes Through
With the holidays screaming at us from all sides,
John Ross took a holiday from writing his Ross on Rules
column for this month. If you can’t make it till his next

Mini Velasquez, know as the Cupcake Lady in the
Stockton bocce community, came through for the Dec.
7th tournament at IAC with a batch of Snowmen cupcakes, decked out on a stand that looked like a brightly
decorated Christmas tree. Unfortunately, by the time I
took a photo, all but four of the cupcakes disappeared.
Did they taste good? I can only imagine. The last four
disappeared before I could get my hands on one of them.
Having been Mini’s teammate in a recent tournament, I
can tell you she also lags a mean bocce ball.
No Mercy
Team Mezzanotte Luna, with Sharon Page, Mini
Velasquez, Ron Marengo and myself did pretty good at
the November 2nd Open tournament at Waterloo Gun
and Bocci Club. We showed no mercy; taking it to both of
our first two opponents. While waiting for our third game,
I wandered around, snapping a few photos, including the
photo below of Alvaro Bettucchi and his team, Talponi.
As it turned out, our third game was with Talponi.
As we stepped onto the court, Alvaro joked that if they
win the game, he assumed the photo I had just taken
won’t make it into the newsletter. Then Alvaro and his
boys proceeded to show us no mercy; beating us 12 to 7.
My first instinct was to delete that damn photo right out of
the camera, right then and there! But then I realized that I
don’t see my friend Alvaro all that often, so not only did I
not delete the photo, but here it is:

No Mea Culpas This Time? Really?
That’s right. There will be no mea culpas in this
month’s column. Sure, I made a few mistakes (don’t we
all from time to time?), but they were relatively small
compared to the bonehead mistakes I’ve made in past
issues.
My apologies to those whose name was misspelled or left out where they should have been acknowledged, but I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity to avoid apologizing by name while the opportunity is
here. Obviously, my friends on Linkedin who gave me
“proofreading” props don’t read this newsletter.
Will there be fewer tournaments in the Western
Sector next year? Heck no. But, there will be a small
change in the number of tournament applications posted
in this newsletter.
The USBF Western Sector Newsletter promotes
bocce. That’s why we’re here. If it’s about bocce, you’ll
see it in here. Since our first issue, we’ve reported on
every tournament we can, USBF sanctioned tournament
or not. The only promoting we did not do was to provide
tournament notices for non-USBF member clubs.
Last January, as a way of further reaching out to
all bocce players, we started including both USBF member and non-member tournament applications. But we
realized we may be shooting ourselves in the foot.
It dawned on us that on some dates that had two
tournaments going on; a USBF sanctioned tournament
as well as a non-member club tournament, by promoting
the non-member tournament, we might be sending players away from our tournaments and to the non-member
tournament. As the Western Sector Newsletter, we naturally want bocce players to consider our tournaments
first. So, starting with this issue, if there are two conflicting tournaments on the same date, we will post only the
USBF tournament application. As in the past year, if a
non-member tournament falls on a date where there is
no scheduled USBF tournament, we will post the application for that tournament in this newsletter.

OPEN RULES BOCCE TOURNAMENT FOR 4 PLAYERS
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2013
Seventeen teams entered this tournament, which
was played in the round robin format. There were four
divisions; three consisting of four teams and one with five
teams. With open rules and a dead backwall, the deep
court provided some very interesting and precision lags.
Congratulations to the winning teams, and to all
teams who entered. A fun time was definitely had by all.
Plus, we had one of those great Waterloo Gun and Bocci
Club lunches to soothe the souls of those teams who did
not make it to the elimination rounds.

The 2013 Las Vegas Bocce Open Tournament was held at the Justice Myron E. Leavitt Park over the Veteran's
Day weekend of November 9th & 10th, with a total of sixteen 3-person teams participating in a two eight-team group
round robin format. The weekend provided a great opportunity for many of us to form new friendships, reacquaint with
some familiar faces and watch some mighty fine bocce playing. The weather couldn't have been better, with the temperature averaging in the mid 70's during the day.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
After the whirlwind two-day event, the 1st place gold medal
winners of $2,400 – Hard Knocks – were the husband and wife
dynamic duo, Tony & Colleen Randazzo of the Martinez, CA Bocce Club, with their first-time teammate, Amadio Egizii of the
Downey, CA Bocce Club.
A few weeks prior to the tournament, up in Northern California, Tony and Colleen were having difficulty securing their third
player, but continued their search because they, among others,
were so looking forward to playing bocce in Las Vegas. What
could be better than that? Meanwhile, unbeknownst to themdown in Southern California, both of Amadio’s original team members dropped out of the tournament. So, as fate would have itthey all agreed, by way of communicating through the organizers,
to form a team, make the best of it, and just have a good ol’ time.
Ironically, Amadio had never even met nor had ever spoken with
the Randazzos prior to the tournament. Upon them being introduced for the first time at the courts in Vegas, only then was it discovered that there would prove to be yet another hurdle to jump:
Colleen and Tony speak English, while Amadio converses only in
Italian and Spanish. They obviously overcame the odds against
them, as they were victorious at the end. What a Cinderella story!
Maybe a particular fan’s lucky red underwear also helped bring
them luck! Who knows?
The 2nd place silver medalists, hard earned winners of
$1,200 - Come Dine With Us - consisted of the beloved Dine
brothers: Rick and Joe Dine of the Downey, CA Bocce Club, with
John Dine of the Martinez, CA Bocce Club. While “the brothers” (as they are often affectionately referred as by many) live 400
miles
apart,
they
don’t
have much of
an opportunity to ever play together. That apparently doesn’t hinder the mechanics of their teamwork. These guys make one giant
mean wrecking machine, and definitely ones to watch! Way to go,
bros.
The 3rd place bronze medalist team, Campo Di Bocce,
earning the $660 prize, is certainly no stranger to the winner’s circle. The terrific trio comprised of Dario Bernardi, Luca Fontana
and Gerald Gilligan (who, in the final week stepped in to replace
Ben Musolf), played fierce but friendly. Their continued sportsmanship and classiness sets a terrific example for us all. They are near
and dear to many of us, and it’s a pleasure to be in their company.
Another instance of this graciousness was when Dario removed his
hard-earned bronze medal and awarded it to tournament coorganizer, Theresa Robarge, for her hard work and as a lifetime
remembrance of a great time. It will truly be treasured, always!
In the 1500s England’s Queen Elizabeth 1 outlawed wife beating after 10 p.m.

The 4th place team, New York, scoring a respectable prize of $330, was comprised of another set of familiar, bicoastal brothers, our very own Guy and Frank De Santis, with team mate and friend Jack Bilancia. These guys have
bocce in their blood – it’s what they live for! They do so much for the sport and for their respective clubs and tournaments, it’s a wonder they have time to work. Their wives must be saints to have such patience for bocce, that’s for
sure.
Two teams tied for 5th and 6th place. La Cresta, with Domenic Lombardo, his son, Biagio and their neighbor/
friend, John Lascari finished neck-and-neck with the Florida team of Dr. Angel Cordano, Tony Ceresoli Sr. and Tony
Ceresoli Jr., with Virginia Cordano accompanying the team as a substitute. Each team was awarded a reputable $150
for their efforts. Thank you for making the long trip, Doc and company.
7th and 8th places, awarded $120 per team, also tied. So. Cal. Warriors, with Miguel Tamagno and Pat Limatola of Downey, CA with 4S member Luigi Pelliccia shared the position with the 4S Rancho Bernardo team of Luigi
Farace, Nino Giannone and Peter Hafer.
9th and 10th places, although not in the money, were secured by Bulls eyes Sam Caeti, Filippo Tarrantini and
Lorenzo Pecoraro, shared by the darlings of the tournament– the Esquire Canucks, with Matt Patreau, his mom, Gail
Patreau, and his girlfriend, Melissa Simms, accompanied by her mother. They came all the way from Sault Ste. Marie,
Ontario, Canada, had never played in a tournament, and didn’t know a soul there. They were just happy to be there,
and to win a few games. These adorable Canadians were the only team to defeat the #1 champions. Cheers - with
beers!

Bocce Club, and Theresa Robarge, President of the Downey, CA Bocce Club. There have been many requests to hold
annual tournaments in Las Vegas, so hopefully this plan may come to fruition. Who‘s ready for a Spring Fling in Sin

The Peppermill 27th Annual Bocce Classic
November 14 thru 17, 2013
The Twenty-seventh Annual Bocce Classic tournament took place at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in
Reno from November 14th through the 17th, 2013. A highlight of the bocce season since 1986, sixty-five teams
played over two days for a chance to win one of twenty cash prizes offered. In addition to those prizes, sixteen
teams who were eliminated from the tournament were entered into the “Second Chance” single elimination round,
where the top four teams also won cash prizes. The “tweeners,” the players who made neither the top twenty nor
the Last Chance bracket, got raffle tickets, so there was, potentially , a prize for almost every one of the players.
A shoot and lag contest is also a part of the tournament. Although a separate fee is charged to enter this
contest, all the money collected for the “shoot and lag” is returned to the entrants in the form of prizes.
There was a lot of bocce going on during the two days. And there’s a lot of waiting for your next game, too.
But not to worry; the continental breakfast table becomes somewhat of a continental brunch table by mid morning.
Then the lunch table is spread. On Thursday and Saturday night, we got a great dinner. Water and ice tea was
always available at many stations throughout the venue. Needless to say, we came to play bocce, but we were
taken care of quite well when we weren’t playing. Many thanks to Tournament Director Anthony Siino, Dana
Shores, Alberta Sanchez and the rest of
the Peppermill staff. For the twentyseventh time, you pulled it off without a
hitch. We can hardly wait until next year!
