With money being tight, why not get paid for going to school? Scholarships aren't just awarded for high marks, but also for community involvement, volunteerism, sports involvement, where you are from, and many other diverse criteria. On Lakeland College's website under Campus Life you can find Financial Aid & Awards. You can search through all of Lakeland's scholarships and there are also links to outside awards and their criteria. It's a good idea to check both often to see approaching deadlines to make sure that money finds a home! Keep on keeping on. Upcoming Rotaract Events… Tuesday Oct 4th – Meeting w/ Michelle Gustafson. Michelle is a member of Rotary and she is on the membership committee. She has a very outgoing, exciting, and motivating personality and will be discussing recruitment ideas and strategies that we can use with our club. Tuesday Oct 18th – Meeting and a presentation of a first hand look at the Malawi Girls School in Africa. Last week I wrote about the Leaders Hall conference I went to over the summer. One of our guest speakers was Kelly Hrudey, former NHL goalie and now a broadcaster for Hockey Night in Canada. I got to sit down with him before his session, one on one, and he is as humble and cool as he is on TV. I excitedly took my seat when his session started, stoked to hear all of these hockey triumphs and glory stories I had imagined him telling. Instead, he began talking about what he believed to be one of his biggest failures. Hrudey was the goaltender for the LA Kings, playing alongside greats such as Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille, and Paul Coffey. After a good season and an impressive playoff run, the Kings ended up losing the 1993 Stanley Cup final to the Montreal Canadiens. As if losing when you're that close to victory isn't hard enough, he had to deal with it in the public eye. He couldn't hide from it, millions of people had watched it live. He taught us about accepting responsibility for our failures while maintaining your dignity and reputation, no matter how difficult it may be to refrain from lashing out and saying the wrong thing. While something as big as losing the Stanley Cup final may seem like a lot more then just a bump in the road, when you look at the bigger picture, that's all it really is. So the next time you have a presentation in class and it bombs, or something equally as bad, will it really matter in ten years? What will matter is how you deal with it and how you learn from your experiences. I won't call them mistakes because mistakes have such a negative tone. Life is about learning from your experiences. Don't let your subsequent actions shape how people see you! So the next time something goes seriously wrong, take a deep breath and take 'er easy, because you never know who may be watching. The best thing about life? It goes on! Have a good week :) LOST & FOUND 1 Blue Nokia Phone 1 Element Wallet 1 Hpll Financial Calculator 1 HIP Street Mp3 Player 1 Texas Instrument TI-84 Plus 1 Gold Key on Silver Chain 1 Motorola Charger 1 Black ladies watch 1 silver ladies watch I set of keys on Lethbridge Students Union Key line 1 GMC Key and keyless entry remote 1 Kia Car key on Todd Chrysler key chain 1 pair of sundog sunglasses 1 pair of Harley Davidson sunglasses 1 pair of black sunglasses 1 Iphone/Ipod charger 1 USB charger 1 NHL key 1 Silver Bracelet 1 Silver Diamond Bracelet 1 Buffalo Calculator 1 Dodge Key 1 Black Bracelet 1 COBY Mp3 Player 1 Gold ring 1 silver flower ring 1 pair of reading glasses 1 pair of red sunglasses 1 pair of silver sunglasses with Pink arms 2 pink glasses ITEMS MAY BE CLAIMED AT STUDENT SERVICES Hello Everyone! Shauni Rechenmacher, LSA Awareness Coordinator September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, so in this week’s article I’m just going to give you a little information on this great organization. The organization works to provide mentoring programs for children and youth through volunteers, men and women, age 18 or older who would like to take time to be a mentor to a young person, which can benefit the child or youth greatly by having an adult as a role model. Typically, a volunteer would be asked to devote a couple hours a week to being a Big Brother or Big Sister, which isn’t a whole lot. Volunteers are what keeps this organization going, so if you would like to be a friend where one is needed to a young person, I suggest looking into becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister! Have Great Week! Attention Students!!! Large Companies such as Cargill and Husky Energy are starting to hire their 2012 summer students ALREADY Watch the Job Posting Board at: www.lakelandcollege.ca/studentemployment AND check websites of companies you would like to work for!!! Newsletter Title Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 6 Inside Story Headline This story can fit 150-200 words. One benefit of using your newsletter as a promotional tool is that you can reuse content from other marketing materials, such as press releases, market studies, and reports. While your main goal of distributing a newsletter might be to sell your product or service, the key to a successful newsletter is making it useful to your readers. A great way to add useful content to your newsletter is to de- velop and write your own articles, or include a calendar of upcoming events or a special offer that promotes a new product. You can also research articles or find “filler” articles by accessing the World Wide Web. You can write about a variety of topics but try to keep your articles short. Much of the content you put in your newsletter can also be used for your Web site. Microsoft Publisher offers a simple way to convert your newsletter to a Web publication. So, when you’re finished writing your newsletter, convert it to a Web site and post it. Caption describing picture or graphic. Inside Story Headline “To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the story here.” This story can fit 100-150 words. The subject matter that appears in newsletters is virtually endless. You can include stories that focus on current technologies or innovations in your field. You may also want to note business or economic trends, or make predictions for your customers or clients. If the newsletter is distributed internally, you might comment upon new procedures or improvements to the business. Sales figures or earnings will show how your business is growing. Some newsletters include a column that is updated every issue, for instance, an advice column, a book review, a letter from the president, or an edito- rial. You can also profile new employees or top customers or vendors. Inside Story Headline This story can fit 75-125 words. Selecting pictures or graphics is an important part of adding content to your newsletter. Think about your article and ask yourself if the picture supports or enhances the message you’re trying to convey. Avoid selecting images that appear to be out of context. Microsoft Publisher includes thousands of clip art images from which you can choose and import into your newsletter. There are also several tools you can use to draw shapes and symbols. Once you have chosen an image, place it close to the article. Be sure to place the caption of the image near the image. Caption describing picture or graphic. It doesn't matter where you are from, it only matters where you are going... No that was stupid, I'm from Sedgewick, Alberta. What program are you in? Program? I don't even go to this school. You just saw me and asked for an interview and I am too narcissistic to turn one down. What's one of your favourite things in life? When something just horrible happens to someone I truly despise. Who is one of your favourite comedians, musicians, or actors? ...................... * He stares at the floor with deep concentration* Carrot To....................No......*He looks back and forth to the ceiling*........Elton.................No No No..........*He looks around breathing heavily with a frightened gleam in his eyes*..........Tyler Perr.......... *His face turning red as he bites his hand, his breathing now rapid*.. Next Question! What made you choose Lakeland College? I chose Lakeland College because it beats sleeping on the street at night. I just go to sleep in the cafeteria during the day with a binder in front of me and no one asks questions. Then I have the whole night to do B & E 's. What's the funniest thing you did in your childhood? Got my parents divorced. What motivates you? Fear. That is about the only thing that motivates me to do anything. In high school when I had homework I would place pictures of Himmler, Goring and Göth above my desk. And I got the best grades I've ever had doing that. Although my parents thought I was affiliated with Neo-National Socialists. Who would you have supper with living or dead? I would have supper with a dead Tom Cruise, I feel I could really savour my meal with a man I truly despise sitting before me lifeless. Wait I didn't hear this right, did I?
