While also being a dab hand at lacrosse, basketball and swimming, he is also remembered as the maternal grandfather of the Chappell brothers (Ian, Greg and Trevor). A talented right-handed batsman, and at one time rated as the best fielder in the world, his cricket career spanned 1918 to 1938 representing South Australia, and he played 19 times for Australia between 1927 and 1936. His football career lasted from 1915 to 1927 (interrupted by the Great War), he captained Sturt on four occasions, won the club’s best and fairest award twice, and captained South Australia in 1923. After retiring from first class cricket he went on to become a respected radio commentator, forging a partnership with former England Test captain Arthur Gilligan. In 1954 he was awarded an OBE for his services to cricket, including his presidency of the Country Carnival Cricket Association. To honour his memory, the South Australian Cricket Association dedicated the “Victor Richardson Gates” and the road leading to them at the Adelaide Oval – these gates remain, though relocated, after the recent major renovations to the ground Est. $1,500 1132 Richmond Cricket Club member badges for 1958-59 and 1960-61; Collingwood Football Club generic badge; Victorian Lawn Tennis Assn badge; Fire Brigade Union badge; another for school athletics and two misc types; together with Royal Mint George V Silver Circulation 10-coin collection in plush case with booklet, New Brunswick Penny token, and POW token in steel c.1916, Mixed Condition (11 items) Est. $75 1133 Autographs of all 19 members of the cricket team which toured India and Pakistan in the 1959-60 series captained by Richie Benaud, on the letterhead of the Australian Cricket Board Est. $75 OLYMPICS Helsinki 1952; Australian Olympian badge by Stokes engraved to F.A.Easton; together with Tasmanian Rowing Union silver fob engraved F.A.Easton T.R.C” and St John Assn ID Badge engraved A107972 Frederick A.Easton” (3 items) The recipient was an Olympic rower some time prior to 1928 but his name shows up in numerous teams and events around 1909 to 1912 when he represented both South Australia and Tasmania (noted Tasmanian King’s Cup crew in 1910 and Sth Aust crew 1912) Est. $350 1128 Melbourne 1956, silk scarf 700mm square in superb condition; Montreal 1976, two cotton scarves 510mm square, green and orange/brown, in English and French; Los Angeles 1984, polyester and cotton flag 870x1500mm by maker Pageantry World with logo “Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee 1980”; plus polyester full-sized generic flag depicting the five rings; together with full-sized ensigns of China and United Kingdom, and New Zealand printed silk souvenir scarf, overall in very nice condition (8 items) Est. $100 1129 Sydney 2000; coloured medallions 38mm in bronze featuring the three mascots and 28 diff sports (104); plus Chile 6-card Disney World “Pocahontas” phonecard sets (30) with 20 spares (lot) Est. $125 Session 2 1127 EMPIRE/COMMONWEALTH GAMES 1130 9th Commonwealth Games Edinburgh 1970, Participation Medal 58mm in bronze with original gilt embossed card box of issue; Montreal Olympics 1976 Wedgwood blue jasper cabinet plate 208mm; America’s Cup 1983 Westminster China cabinet plate 260mm illustrating the winning boat ‘Australia II’ (3 items) Est. $75 FOOTBALL CRICKET 1134 Lot 1131 Page 56 Image viewable on website www.downies.com/auctions Essendon Football Club; autograph book with signatures Paul Van der Haar, Gary Foulds, Max Crow, Ron Andrews, Roger Merrett Barry Davis and Kevin Sheedy; framed note paper scraps with two Chips Rafferty signatures; together with misc items incl Mona Lisa cabinet plate in Limoges style; Franklin Mint “Faberge” champagne flutes (4, one cracked); acrylic faux-bronze sculpture of Tom Morris 190mm; and a plated-cast trinket box c.1930s (9 items) Est. $75 Downies Australian Coin Auctions Sale No. 317 1135 Weg VFL premiership posters for 1967 and 1973. both for Richmond Football Club, both folded with edge tears and tape adhesions; together with football and other sports scrapbook, and misc postcards and other ephemera, Mixed Condition (lot) Est. $200 1136 Grindley Hotel Ware vintage white glazed vitreous china ‘Po’ with CFC (Chelsea Football Club England) logo, excellent condition Est. $75 1137 1142 Golf; Victorian Ladies Golf Union 15ct gold and sterling silver and enamel brooches/badges, the gold item engraved “Sandringham 30.9.12” lovely condition with reverse pins intact (2 items) Est. $300 1143 Lawn Bowls; Williamstown Bowling Club 9ct gold fob with unidentified local hallmarks, reverse engraved “Collingwood Trophy Won by F.Archard Season 1900-1901” aVF and a rare federation period survivor Est. $150 1144 Shooting; Victorian 15ct gold prize fob with local hallmarks engraved “SCDRCA Best Shot 1905-6 W.Taylor Woodend Rifle Club” VF Est. $175 1145 Shooting; Mildura Rifle Club 9ct gold prize fob/badge engraved to “R.
