MICHELIN: “FROM TYRES TO SOLES”
The “Fit for Use” of MICHELIN Technical Soles continues to attract the attention of the footwear market. It
is the underlying philosophy at the core of MICHELIN soles: just as tires are designed for a particular type of
road or ground surface and a specific use, so too must there be specific and custom-designed outsoles based
on the technical requirements of outdoor enthusiasts. Each sole is different, each carefully designed for its
intended use, made exclusively on behalf of each brand partner and according to their exact specifications.
This close collaboration combines the proven management of MICHELIN “ground contact” with the skills of each footwear
manufacturer. The designers of MICHELIN Technical Soles use their design know-how to conceive of a sole that perfectly
matches the construction of the shoe’s upper, thus optimizing performance.
Significantly, this careful attention to detail has paid off for the brand, helping it achieve a rank of 15th in global recognition,
according to a 2016 study by the Reputation Institute.
For spring/summer 2017, look for us at the OutDoor trade fair in Friedrichshafen. We’ll be there with four outdoor performance
footwear, each with engineered outsoles on display carrying the MICHELIN brand and our iconic MICHELIN Man logo.
Wherever the rubber meets the road, MICHELIN is making a difference.

AKU AND MICHELIN:
ELICA® SYSTEM MEETS TYRE KNOW-HOW
The mountain environment, the culture and value systems associated with it have long been a source
of both inspiration and corporate responsibility for AKU, Italy’s leading hiking and outdoor footwear
specialist. To ensure it offers outdoor enthusiasts exactly the footwear solutions they need, for summer
2017, AKU will be combining the MICHELIN Pulsar Technical soles with its own in-house AKU ElicaNatural Stride System in three lines of their Multiterrain collection.
LA VAL, PULSAR and MONTERA are three new models available in a choice of 40 different versions.
Although all are designed for light trekking and hiking, they are also aimed at three different kinds
of users with very distinct approaches and characters. These are ultralight, versatile boots perfect
for dynamic, intensive use. They also incorporate leading-edge technologies to support their high
performance all-around focus. These are three different models that can effortlessly adapt to different
types of terrain and conditions, delivering progressive traction, superb stability and excellent selfcleaning: a real must-have for active outdoor enthusiasts.
We selected MICHELIN Technical Soles because
it complements our company’s commitment to
innovative footwear. Behind each model lies a
genuine love for manufacturing, built on the ageold prestigious tradition of Italian workmanship.
The constant search of best technical solutions
for outdoor activities has led us to work with the
MICHELIN Technical Soles teams and to obtain an
excellent result.
We are very satisfied with the result of this
coordinated development work conducted
with AKU technicians. Using their input and
requirements as a starting point, we engineered
a high performance sole which was then tested
on all terrain conditions. It’s a technical solution
that translates into a versatile product tailored
specifically for AKU.

MICHELIN PULSAR,
THE ULTRA-RELIABLE MULTITERRAIN SOLE
Developed exclusively for AKU, the new MICHELIN Pulsar Technical soles is the
product of a close collaboration between a team of skilled footwear specialists.
Drawing on MICHELIN’s own extensive ground contact expertise, the MICHELIN
Technical Soles designers worked hand-in-glove with AKU management to
create an all-round high performance product that adapts easily to all kinds of
terrain and conditions, making it a real “must have” for outdoor enthusiasts.
The combination of the MICHELIN Technical Sole and the AKU Elica-Natural
Stride System, which accommodates the foot’s anatomy and biomechanics to
support the natural inclination of the heel and forefoot, results in more even
weight distribution on the sole of the foot both as it lands and pushes off again.
The MICHELIN Pulsar sole was developed to accommodate the Aku ElicaNatural Stride System, with an asymmetric design for ground contact (1) in
line with the natural stride axis. It takes its inspiration from the MICHELIN Wild
Grip’R Descent mountain bike tyre which itself was developed for downhill
cycling on mixed terrain, with progressive lateral grip and a motocross-derived
tread pattern. All in all, it’s a good test bench for a sole made to tackle all
kinds of ground surfaces, something it can accomplish effectively thanks to

deep grooves that boost adaptability to very different kinds of terrain (2). In
addition, the sculptures are positioned in irregular groups to focus on the areas
of greatest stress. Smaller and more aggressive sculptures under the big toe
deliver progressive traction (3), while aggressive shoulder sculptures improve
lateral traction and stability (4). Bridge reinforcements also achieve the same
for stability and wear resistance (5). Massive sculptures at the heel boost braking
ability (7). A high distance ratio between the sculptures also facilitates selfcleaning (6), while two flexion channels make for greater flexibility when the
foot is rolling.

GARMONT®, MICHELIN® AND GORE-TEX® SURROUND®:
HUGE STRIDES IN PROTECTION AND COMFORT
The new GARMONT® Mystic Surround is a technical, versatile hiking shoe with three major advantages.
The first is superb comfort, thanks to the anatomical design provided by GARMONT A.D.D.® (Anatomically
Directed Design) technology. The second is secure ground contact, courtesy of the MICHELIN Cross Terrain
sole which is inspired by two MICHELIN mountain bike tires designed to deliver perfect traction on both
hard ground and mixed terrain. Lastly, the GARMONT Mystic Surround is waterproof in wet conditions
but also exceptionally breathable thanks to GORE-TEX® SURROUND®. The shoe keeps feet cool as well
as dry.
We were looking for a genuinely custom solution
for the Mystic Surround. This was an unusual
project because it is aimed at quite a fragmented
end-use, spanning everything from adventure
holidays to mountains. The collaboration with
Michelin allowed us to take advantage of their
know-how in working with rubber and to obtain
a sole developed specifically with our goals in
mind: creation of a shoe that offered reliability,
performance and quality.

GARMONT International
The ‘Fit for Use’ philosophy is the primary signature
of our work. GARMONT presented us with a very
exciting project and our technicians worked handin-glove with the Treviso, Italy, company as they
designed the ad hoc sole: like all our products,
the Cross Terrain is a unique sole designed for a
footwear line that delivers genuine innovation
and tangible advantages to the consumer.

MICHELIN CROSS TERRAIN:
A SOLE COMPLETELY AT HOME ON A VARIETY OF TERRAIN
A light, practical shoe that provides the ankle with complete freedom of
movement, yet grips and protects the foot for a combination of comfort, security
and reliability. That’s the Mystic Surround, the latest addition to GARMONT’s
hiking boot line-up.
Versatile and multifunctional, the Mystic Surround is perfect for outdoor
enthusiasts with an active lifestyle as it features a MICHELIN Technical Sole and
was developed through close partnership between the R & D departments of
both companies.
The MICHELIN Cross Terrain sole is inspired by two mountain bike tires: the
MICHELIN Country Rock, designed to excel on hard ground such as asphalt,
cement or hardpack trails, and the MICHELIN Country Trail, its counterpart for
mixed terrain, trails and grass. The resulting sole is thus perfect for different
types of surfaces, including rough terrain on which it delivers both stability and
traction.
Four sections of irregular sculptures spread in a semicircle under the forefoot
to simultaneously provide lateral grip, traction and ground contact. Special

grooves also break up the sculptures to make the sole more flexible. The midfoot
area has a series of specific sculptures which guarantee stability when tackling
obstacles. They are positioned widely; to improve traction offer efficient selfcleaning.
The new Mystic Surround (low cut) is available in a choice of two colour
combinations for men (grey/green and coffee/ginger orange) and in an attractive
coffee/teal green combination for women, but it is also available on a mid cut
in different colours.

MILLET ENTERS TRAIL RUNNING WITH MICHELIN,
SETTING NEW LAWS OF A-TRACTION
With the entrance of MICHELIN®, the technical sole market has seen the emergence of a new leader,
who has quickly become protagonist and innovator in the footwear world. Long committed to making
a difference, the French company MILLET now officially and proudly presents its latest leading-edge
running shoe to the retail sector. The Alpine Rush is a high performance trail running shoe featuring a
new MICHELIN branded technical sole developed using a motocross and cyclocross tyres as the starting
point. Designed by the two companies for Ultra Trail endurance running over mountain terrain, the
Alpine Rush offers excellent traction, support and comfort. It adapts brilliantly to changing terrain and,
although exceptionally breathable thanks to its Matryx® fabric upper, is also impressively durable.
The Alpine Rush Matryx makes its official world debut at the OutDoor international trade fair at Friedrichshafen in
Germany this coming July 13-16. Made from Matryx technical fabric and sporting the exclusive MICHELIN sole, it was
co-designed by MILLET’s footwear management team in partnership with the MICHELIN Technical Soles design team
to deliver tangible results to runners.
The Alpine Rush is a real turning point for MILLET
because it brings the new Matryx technical fabric
to high mountain altitudes. This leads to our
decision to work with MICHELIN Technical Soles
to guarantee innovation in both the upper and
the sole to produce a mountain trail shoes that is
genuinely leading-edge.
This research project involved a whole slew of
different factors. Trail running is a hugely complex
discipline that spans a large variety of different
terrains, often involving muddy or other on-thelimit conditions. But the MICHELIN Mont Blanc
sole really does know its job in that regard.

MICHELIN MONT BLANC DEVELOPED WITH AND FOR MILLET
The MILLET Alpine Rush was designed and developed specifically for Ultra Trail
long-distance running at high mountain altitudes.
The upper is made from
, an innovative new technical fabric made
of nylon and kevlar with a water-repellent PU treatment, ensuring that it both
allows the foot to breathe and keeps out moisture. The dual density EVA semi
oversize midsole provides an amazing ride while reducing fatigue and risk of
injuries with an excellent comfort on all types of grounds.
The real “engine” is the sole developed specifically with and for MILLET. The
designers of MICHELIN Technical Soles have worked in partnership with the
MILLET footwear division management team: it offers excellent traction,
support and comfort yet adapts effortlessly to changing terrain.
The new MICHELIN-engineered MICHELIN Mont Blanc sole’s name alone is
a high-altitude promise, one that delivers the advantages of the MICHELIN

variable terrain that often features long muddy or very slippery stretches, with
the performance of the motocross-derived MICHELIN M12 XC tyre, which has a
tread pattern with extra plies to tackle mixed and hard-packed ground.
The result is an extremely reliable sole that guarantees safe, secure traction on
all types of surfaces - everything from stony to dusty, to grassy and wet rocky
stretches.
LAWS OF A-TRACTION AT WORK ON THIS ULTRA-TRAIL SHOE
The sole delivers a brilliant combination of functions in one sleek package. To start,
multifaceted sculptures on the longitudinal axis boost adaptability to different
terrain (1) and siped sculptures on the forefoot make for exceptional adherence
(2) while back at the heel, further siped sculptures deliver impeccable braking and
adaptability (6). Strong sculptures on the shoulders boost both traction and lateral
support (3), while centre bridge between the sculptures reinforces the ground
contact area, dissipating impact and protecting the foot from microtrauma (4).
This highly specific design combined with the Outdoor Compound guarantees
great stability on uneven ground as well as impressive abrasion-resistance thanks
in good part to chamfers that cut the risk of sculpture wear and tear (5). Overall
the sole delivers a high performance marriage of optimal traction and support.

MICHELIN TECHNICAL SOLES AND SALEWA DEVELOP
NEW PROPOSALS FOR SS17
When a footwear manufacturer selects MICHELIN® for its outsoles, the team of designers at
MICHELIN Technical Soles do more than just sell them rubber. They roll up their sleeves and
carefully engineer the right mix of rubber, structure and lugs to custom tailor outsoles to
the specific requirements of the shoe’s intended purpose, whether it’s hiking, biking,
running or other outdoor activities. Such was the case when SALEWA, the technical
mountain specialist brand based in the heart of the Dolomites, approached MICHELIN
for its successful Ultra Train and Lite Train mountain training shoes introduced in
2016. For spring/summer 2017, MICHELIN is continuing its partnership with SALEWA
through the development of the Multi Track hiking/running/biking and the Wander Hiker
shoes.
Tyres and shoes share the same vocabulary: track, sole, tread, roll, stability, safety, performance and
rubber. The materials specialists at MICHELIN Technical Soles, apply their knowledge of “ground contact”
technology with the expertise of SALEWA product specialists who have studied the requirements of alpine
sport footwear. Working together side-by-side, the two companies design footwear from the ground up,
so that the outsole, middle and upper work together in perfect harmony.
SALEWA stands for 80 years of mountain
experience and MICHELIN® is a world leader in
rubber compounds and tyres. We joined forces to
developed the Multi Track and Wander Hiker shoes
in our footwear R&D facilities in Montebelluna,
Italy.
Development of these two new hiking shoes
is the latest result of a collaboration with the
Oberalp Group, makers of SALEWA. We basically
started from the ground up, combining the right
rubber compound with outsole structures that
bring tangible advantages to the end user. It’s a
difference hikers will be able to feel every time
they venture outdoors.
