Cagliari old town
It has taken much longer for visitors to
discover the incredibly wild, beautiful
and unspoilt region of southern Sardinia.
Less commercialised than the north of
the island, the southern coastline boasts
stunning beaches and crystal clear seas
teeming with dramatic mountain ranges,
interesting wildlife and prehistoric sites.
Capital of Sardinia, Cagliari separates the south east
from the south west. It is an impressive city tucked
into the Golfo degli Angeli with a medieval citadel
towering imposingly on the hilltop. Travelling westwards
from Cagliari, the road follows the coast on a raised
strip of land with the sea on one side and expansive
swamplands, salt pans and a marvellous sanctuary of
wildlife on the other – flamingos, herons, waders and
sea birds can be seen in their hundreds along this part
of the coast.
Situated between the long sandy coastline of Santa
Margherita and the majestic Sulcis mountain range,
Pula is a bustling resort with a good selection of
restaurants, pizzerie, gelaterie and bars. In the evenings,
the central square is throbbing with locals and visitors
enjoying the lively atmosphere in sidewalk cafés and
restaurants, or browsing around the many shops

which stay open until very late. Pula by night is also the
ideal place for an after dinner ice cream and a spot of
summer’s evening people watching! During the peak of
the summer months, live music and local folk dancing
often take place in one of the two main squares. Not
to be missed is the archaeological site of Nora nearby –
the ruins of the ancient city extend as far as the headland
of Capo di Pula in a spectacular setting by the sea.
Further along the coastal road west of Pula are the
dazzling white sand dunes of Chia and the start of the
Costa del Sud – a 20km stretch and one of Sardinia’s
most stunning coastlines, rugged and undeveloped
hiding tranquil creeks and coves studded with Pisan
and Spanish watchtowers. Few roads run along the
coast, so the best way to explore is by boat or on
foot. Continuing along the west coast, the road takes
you through beautiful contrasts – the magnificent but
scarcely visited beaches of the Costa Verde to the
densely forested hills and mountains of the Iglesiente.
Solanas offers the longest stretch of sand in the area,
making it a real favourite with families seeking a beach
holiday, whereas Porto Sa Ruxi, nestling on a rocky
promontory washed on both sides by the sea, is perfect
for swimming and snorkelling. Villasimius is a small town
that comes alive during the summer months with a
good quota of bars, boutiques, restaurants and a lively
piazza. A little further, you can find Simius, another
magnificent sweep of sand surrounded by turquoise
and aquamarine waters, and Marina di Villasimius,
a new yachting port on Golfo di Carbonara. On the
east coast of the island lies the Costa Rei – this part
of the island offers shimmering expanses of fine white
sand, excellent swimming conditions and some of the
best beaches anywhere on the island.
To the east of Cagliari, the coastline is one of the most
alluring on the island and is sprinkled with residential
resorts such as Solanas, Porto Sa Ruxi and Villasimius.

With a truly enviable position, near to several beautiful beaches such as Nora bay
and the thriving character-filled town of Pula, Casa Stefania is a comfortable family
home and the ideal choice for exploring the south coast. Although the house is
in a group of six and not a detached property, it does have a feel of privacy, mainly
due to the mature trees and shrubs that encircle the boundary. The front garden is
surprisingly spacious and lush with greenery including a fruiting pomegranate tree and
flowering hibiscus. Along the side of the house, the pool area is fronted by a covered
patio area, ideal for outside dining. The house itself is on three floors, with the front
door opening into the cosy living area and a small second kitchen. Upstairs are the
main bedrooms, which are comfortably furnished and have some sweeping views
of the countryside and coastline. The third and largest level of the house is actually
below ground, housing the main living area with ample soft furnishings, cool stone
floors and whitewashed walls – perfect for escaping the heat of the day. This floor also
houses a further bedroom and the main kitchen. Casa Stefania provides comfortable
accommodation, perfect for a summer family holiday.

The first thing you’ll notice as you enter the grounds of Casa Querce is the sheer
size of the immaculately kept lawns and gardens. There is a glassy pond surrounded
by reeds, flowering shrubs of oleander and shimmering pampas grass. The general
atmosphere is overwhelmingly rural despite the lively town of Pula being only a
couple of kilometres away. The gardens also conceal what is probably the property’s
jewel: the dazzling pool. Surrounded by sculpted rock gardens and low shrubs,
this area gets the sun all day long – though you can seek shade under some nearby
holm oak trees and mature lentisco – and it is as inviting and peaceful as you could
hope for. At the centre of the grounds stands the ochre coloured house. All on
one level it has a cool, alluring interior. The split-level lounge area is decorated
with a number of unusual artefacts from the owner’s extensive travels and there is
traditional Sardinian furniture, which is set off against the white walls. The wellequipped and sizeable kitchen opens out onto a large terrace area perfect for
soaking up the sun and for extended meal times.

Situated in a residential area only a short drive away from Cagliari, Casa del Sole is
a new addition to our programme and provides the perfect opportunity to explore
southern Sardinia from your very own home-from-home. The house itself is a mix of
traditional features, personal touches and modern facilities, striking the right balance
between being quaint and comfortable. Arranged on one floor with an open plan
living area and two bedrooms, we think it would particularly appeal to a couple or
a small family. Outside facilities include a private pool which benefits from the sun all
day long, a covered terrace with wonderful views and a built-in barbecue, perfect for
those al fresco lunches. There are many sites worth visiting in the area – get lost in the
narrow lanes of Cagliari’s Citadel and enjoy the majestic views over the city, sea and
mountains from one of the many café terraces. This part of town also offers a fantastic
collection of museums, archaeological remains and historic churches. Or if you’d
rather have a lazy day out, head for Poetto beach – a 6km stretch of white sand lined
with funfairs, bars and pizzerias, and very popular in the summer with the locals.

understated luxury and boasts an enchanting setting amid peaceful and beautifully
kept gardens. There are only 19 rooms here – all elegantly furnished and arranged
with meticulous attention to detail, and each with a private terrace or balcony

This splendidly elegant hotel is set on the coast just to the south of Villasimius.
The architecture is just delightful – Hotel Cala Caterina is built from local stone in
a traditional Mediterranean style with frescoed walls and long shady colonnades.
Situated on either the ground or first floor, the rooms are all tastefully furnished in
elegant pastel shades, with painted wooden furniture, marble topped tables and a
terrace or balcony. Each room is subtly different, perhaps with the addition of a piece
