Arnn President Hillsdale College D ISTINGUISHED S PEAKERS Michael Walsh, a journalist, author, and screenwriter, is a columnist for PJ Media and a contributor to National Review and National Review Online. He has been an op-ed columnist for The New York Post and a correspondent and music critic for Time magazine. He has taught journalism, film, and television at Boston University. A co-writer of the Disney Channel original movie, Cadet Kelly, he is the author of several novels, including As Time Goes By: A Novel of Casablanca, Exchange Alley, And All the Saints—which won a 2004 American Book Award—and Shock Warning. He is author or co-author of several books on music, including Carnegie Hall: The First One Hundred Years. Victor Davis Hanson is the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, a professor of classics emeritus at California State University, Fresno, and a nationally syndicated columnist for Tribune Media Services. He has written for several publications, including the Wall Street Journal, National Review, Commentary, the Claremont Review of Books, the New Criterion, the Weekly Standard, and the Daily Telegraph. A recipient of the National Humanities Medal and the Bradley Prize, he is the author of numerous books, including The Soul of Battle, Carnage and Culture, and The Savior Generals: How Five Great Commanders Saved Wars That Were Lost—From Ancient Greece to Iraq. John Steele Gordon, a historian and journalist, is a regular contributor to Commentary, Forbes, American History, National Review, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. A contributing editor at Philanthropy, he writes the “The Long View” column for Barron’s. Previously, he wrote the "Business of America" column for American Heritage. He is the author of several books, including Hamilton's Blessing: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Our National Debt, A Thread Across the Ocean: The Heroic Story of the Transatlantic Cable, An Empire of Wealth: The Epic History of American Economic Power, and Washington's Monument: And the Fascinating History of the Obelisk (forthcoming). JUNEAU, ALASKA Day Three | Friday, July 29 Humpback Whale Nestled at the base of Mt. Juneau on the Gastineau Channel, Alaska’s capital city was founded during the Gold Rush of the 1880s. Consider a shore excursion to Mendenhall Glacier, a 12mile river of ice and Alaska’s most accessible and most photographed glacier. HOONAH, ALASKA Day Four | Saturday, July 30 Hoonah offers a view of Tlingit culture, as well as an abundance of totem poles, beautiful scenery, and exotic wildlife. Hoonah is on Chichagof Island, home to the world’s largest brown bear population. SEMINARS-AT-SEA AND HUBBARD GLACIER CRUISING Day Five | Sunday, July 31 Juneau, Alaska Seventy-five miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. Today Skagway retains the flavor of the Gold Rush era, especially on Broadway, with its false-front buildings, and in the Trail of ’98 Museum, with its outstanding collection of memorabilia. SITKA, ALASKA Day Seven | Tuesday, August 2 In 1804, Sitka became the Russian capital of North America. In 1867, the Imperial Russian flag was replaced by the Stars and Stripes when the United States purchased Alaska. Today picturesque Sitka, across the water from snow-capped Mount Edgecumbe, is known for its fishing industry. KETCHIKAN, ALASKA Day Eight | Wednesday, August 3 The salmon capital of the world and a paradise for fishermen and naturelovers alike, Ketchikan also has a rich Indian heritage. It boasts the world’s largest collection of totem poles at Totem Bight.
